Double Bad Beat: A brutal turnover and meaningless 3-pointer cost Kansas the cover and cashed the over

An extra helping of bad beats to kick off Thanksgiving

As far as bad decisions go, Kevin McCullar opting for a full-court pass in the waning moments of KU’s victory over NC State on Wednesday probably won’t be remembered.

Anyone who wagered on the game definitely won’t forget it, unfortunately.

The No. 3 Jayhawks entered the Battle 4 Atlantis opener as 8.5-point favorites and, as McCullar ripped away the ball from Jarkel Joiner with 18 seconds on the clock, Kansas held a nine point lead.

You can guess where this is going. McCullar attempted to heave the ball down the floor to guard Dajuan Harris only to be intercepted by Casey Morsell, who took four dribbles up the court and launched a poorly-contested three-pointer with 2.7 seconds to play. Of course Morsell drained it, but that’s only where the trouble begins.

Not only did the bucket give NC State an exceptional backdoor cover, but it cashed the over 153 as the Jayhawks won 80-74.

An absolutely brutal double bad beat on a meaningless play.

Next time, Kevin, please just make the smart play and protect the ball. Or just win in a blowout and avoid the whole scenario.

The Badgers’ opening day matchup was recently announced against the Dayton Flyers on Nov. 23 at 1:30 p.m. CST. The game will be televised on either ESPN or ESPN 2. This will be Wisconsin’s third appearance in the tournament, which they last won in 2014 with legend Frank Kaminsky taking home the tournament’s MVP award.

Hopefully, this young Wisconsin team can use the tournament to develop chemistry and find their identity ahead of the start of the Big Ten regular season.

We now know who Arkansas will pitted against in the Battle 4 Atlantis

Arkansas basketball will play for the first time ever in the Bahamas in 2022, per a report.

Arkansas will be headed to the Bahamas for basketball.

The Razorbacks were confirmed as part of the eight-team Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the early part of the 2022-23 season.

The tournament is a veritable who’s who of the college basketball world. Joining the Hogs on Paradise Island are defending national runner’s-up North Carolina and perennial powerhouse Villanova, along with Michigan, Memphis, Stanford, Oklahoma and Northern Iowa, per a report by CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

Arkansas has never competed in Bahamas, though the Razorbacks have played every team that’s participating and all but Villanova and Memphis in the last decade.

The Razorbacks finished the 2021-22 season in the Elite Eight where they were defeated by Duke. It was Arkansas’ second straight season making that round of the NCAA Tournament.

Coach Eric Musselman’s roster will have a far different look next year, too. The Hogs return just two scholarship players off last year’s roster – guard Devo Davis and forward Kamani Johnson – but bring in the No. 2-ranked recruiting class in the country and six players from the transfer portal.

Jabari Smith named SEC Freshman of the Week

Jabari Smith is on a roll right now.

Jabari Smith is flashing his NBA potential early with the Auburn Tigers.

Smith earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors after leading the Tigers to a 2-1 record in the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament, according to the Southeastern Conference. Smith averaged 19.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game against No. 22 UConn, Loyola Chicago, and Syracuse.

Smith scored 22 points against both UConn and Syracuse, the second and third 20-point outings of his young career with the Tigers. He also went a career-best 12-for-12 from the free-throw line versus UConn shooting 93.3 percent from the charity stripe for the week, while also knocking down six 3-pointers.

Auburn’s offensive efficiency has shot through the roof (112.4 adj. efficiency, 16th nationally according to KenPom) this season and part of it has to do with the way Jabari Smith has played for the Tigers.

Why Baylor’s Battle 4 Atlantis victory could foreshadow another NCAA tournament title

History says it’s time to bet Baylor to win the title again.

The reigning champion Baylor Bears picked up their biggest win of the season Friday, knocking off Michigan State, 75-58, to win the 2021 Battle 4 Atlantis.

The result isn’t too shocking, of course.

No. 6 Baylor is in a significantly better position than the Spartans through November. It has a lineup featuring Adam Flagler and Matthew Mayer in starring roles, a head coach in Scott Drew fresh off proving his doubters wrong last season and the type of program outlook usually reserved for blue bloods.

What made Friday’s win important had little to do with Michigan State at all. It was more about the setting.

The Battle 4 Atlantis has a habit of predicting champions. The winner of the tournament has finished the year cutting down the nets in two of the last three seasons.

Villanova won in Atlantis in November 2017, then claimed a national title the following March. Virginia did the same in 2018-19.

A 19-12 Michigan team was unranked when the Big Ten halted play due to COVID-19 in 2020. Its questionable resume had UM on the NCAA tournament bubble, which could’ve snapped The Bahamas’ streak of producing champions. The Battle 4 Atlantis was scrapped in 2020 amid the pandemic, so Baylor didn’t have a chance to test the theory last year.

The Bears quickly made up for it, running through Arizona State and VCU before finishing off Tom Izzo’s club on Friday.

Now Baylor (+2000 to repeat as champions at Tipico Sportsbook) has the sport’s best omen in their pocket as things keep looking up in Waco.
