WATCH: Former Badger linebacker not concerned about in-state recruiting

Many skeptics have pointed out the team’s lack of success with recruiting Wisconsin athletes, but former linebacker Chris Orr isn’t worried.

The 2023 Badger football season is one that fans are eagerly awaiting because of all the changes under head coach Luke Fickell. Many skeptics have pointed out the team’s lack of success with recruiting Wisconsin athletes, but former Badger linebacker Chris Orr isn’t worried.

Orr was a member of Wisconsin’s defense from 2015-2019, racking up 188 total tackles, including 15 sacks, over 41 contests. As seen below, he says that T.J. Watt (Pewaukee, WI) was the only Badger State player that was the best Wisconsin football player for any of the seasons during Orr’s time in Madison.

The linebacker goes on to state that even the best players in program history aren’t from Wisconsin (Jonathan Taylor, Ron Dayne, etc). In the end, Orr understands the program better than almost anyone and what he has to say makes a lot of sense.

The cornerback decided to join head coach Luke Fickell and his defensive coordinator Mike Tressel’s system in Madison, which churned out NFL talents Sauce Gardner and Coby Bryant at cornerback in their time at Cincinnati.

With his commitment, Harper became the fourth secondary player to pick Wisconsin for the class of 2024, joining three-star safeties Kahmir Prescott (Philadelphia, PA) and Raphael Dunn (Lawrenceville, NJ) as well as three-star cornerback Vernon Woodward (Winter Park, FL).

Wisconsin recruit wins third straight state title Saturday

Nick Janowksi and the Pewaukee Pirates won their third straight Wisconsin High School basketball Division 2 state championship Saturday.

Nick Janowksi and the Pewaukee Pirates won their third straight Wisconsin High School basketball Division 2 state championship Saturday. The 6-foot-3 guard and his teammates were able to take down Whitnall 71-54, with Janowski producing 20 points, eight assists and six rebounds over nearly 35 minutes.

The junior at Pewaukee High School has now won the state championship in all three seasons of his seasons with the team and is gearing up for a potential leap to collegiate basketball in 2024. The four-star recruit received an offer from the Badgers in April 2022 and is now up to eight Division 1 offers overall.

With the Badgers expecting a lot of production from their incoming class of 2023 recruits, Greg Gard and his coaching staff could certainly benefit from grabbing the second-highest ranked player in Wisconsin for the class of 2024.

Future Badger Nolan Winter, a three-star forward from Lakeville, Minnesota was named the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year on Wednesday. The 6-foot-10 athlete committed to Wisconsin in September and is one of three players set to join the team next season.

Winter averaged 23.2 points per game while grabbing 11.5 boards as well this season. On top of the on-court production, he was also very active in the community and a 3.90 GPA student.

With Tyler Wahl potentially leaving the Badgers following the conclusion of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), Winter could step into a significant role with Wisconsin in 2023. Regardless, he’ll look to become the next successful Badger recruit from Minnesota.

Badgers offer three-star athlete from Chicago

Wisconsin offered Tysean Griffin, a three-star athlete from Chicago on Thursday.

The Badgers offered Tysean Griffin, a three-star athlete from Chicago, Illinois on Thursday. The 5-foot-11 Griffin has experience on both sides of the ball, operating as a running back, wide receiver and cornerback for Morgan Park, High School.

Griffin would be a member of the class of 2024 and therefore has one more year before he’d join a collegiate program. He has already received multiple offers from other schools outside of Wisconsin, including one from Cincinnati, new Badger head coach Luke Fickell’s former team.

So far, Wisconsin has earned two commitments for the class of 2024, four-star quarterback Mabrey Mettauer (The Woodlands, Texas) and cornerback Austin Alexander (Chicago Heights, Illinois).

Wisconsin class of 2022 target cornerback A’Khoury Lyde will announce his college decision tonight, according to a recent post on his Instagram page.

Lyde is 247Sports’ No. 745 player in the class of 2022, No. 74 cornerback and No. 17 recruit from his home state of New Jersey.

As seen above, Lyde is choosing between Wisconsin, Pittsburgh and Duke. Though if 247Sports’ crystal ball predictions are any indication, the Badgers seem to be the likely landing spot for the three-star cornerback.

A possible commitment from Lyde tonight would bring the Badgers’ class of 2022 up to three players, joining QB Myles Burkett and OL Barrett Nelson.

A check-in on the Badgers’ class of 2021 after landing five-star tackle Nolan Rucci

Entering Tuesday the Wisconsin Badgers’ class of 2021 was lining up to be–or maybe already was–the greatest recruiting class in program history.

With big names including four-star offensive tackles J.P. Benzschawel and Riley Mahlman, four-star defensive end T.J. Bollers, four-star safety Hunter Wohler, four-star tight end Jack Pugh and four-star quarterback Deacon Hill already part of the class, Paul Chryst and his staff were seeking a commitment from one final big name player, a guy many NFL analysts have called a future top-5 pick in the NFL Draft.

He is five-star offensive tackle Nolan Rucci, the No. 14 player in the class of 2021.

Well, on Tuesday the Badgers received a commitment from Rucci and cemented the 2021 class as the best the program has ever seen.

So we can project that the group will be looked upon fondly when it’s all said done, but where do they lie now in the national and conference recruiting rankings?

The answer: the No. 16 class in the country and No. 3 in the Big Ten behind only Ohio State and Michigan.

Listen to some of the schools with classes currently ranked higher than Wisconsin’s: Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, Oregon, Clemson, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, USC, Michigan, Notre Dame and Oklahoma.

Those are some of the blue blood programs in college football, teams who are often left at the end of the season battling for a national championship.

Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin Badgers are now entering the conversation with those schools thanks to this class and the recruiting momentum they’ve gained in recent years.

Is a national championship on the horizon? Who knows. But this class and the ones to follow will at least give the program a better shot at winning their first Big Ten championship since 2012.

They obviously need to come in and show it on the field. But if we’ve seen anything during the Paul Chryst and Jim Leonhard era it’s that the player development is tremendous, the coaching is tremendous and the success will come no matter who is on the field.

Going forward, now, those guys on the field will be one of the best groups in the country. The sky is the limit for this program going forward and landing Rucci on Tuesday was only the beginning.

2021 three-star wide receiver lists the Badgers in his top 7

The 2021 recruiting season isn’t over quite yet for Paul Chryst, Joe Rudolph and the Wisconsin Badgers.

Earlier today they made the cut for another recruit’s top schools; 2021 three-star wide receiver Eric McAlister.

As seen above the other schools listed are Boise State, Utah, Wyoming, San Diego State, Virginia Tech and Nebraska.

McAlister is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 837 player in the class of 2021, the No. 121 wide receiver and the No. 117 player from his home state of Texas.

Despite the Badgers among the receiver’s final schools, the latest crystal ball prediction has him choosing to play his college years at Boise State.

The Badgers currently have one wide receiver in their class of 2021 in three-star recruit Skyler Bell, so adding McAlister would give them valuable depth at the position as the program looks ahead to Graham Mertz’s years under center.

The class as a whole currently ranks No. 17 in the nation and No. 3 in the Big Ten, both marks that would rise were the program to land the wide receiver and five-star offensive tackle Nolan Rucci.
