Chiefs TE Travis Kelce hints at career after NFL in award speech

Check out what #Chiefs TE Travis Kelce had to say during a speech at the K.C. Sports awards.

Kansas City Chiefs veteran tight end Travis Kelce appeared at the KC Sports Awards on Tuesday. He was given some time to speak to the crowd after accepting the Polsinelli Sportsman of the Year award, reflecting on his 12 years in the NFL.

In his time on the mic after receiving the Polsinelli Sportsman award, Kelce spoke about his level of freedom in Andy Reid’s offense, which seems to have contributed to his incredible success on the field, having the confidence in making those wild plays that lead to scores.

In wrapping up he also touched on the idea that he won’t always be in the NFL and thanked Kansas City for supporting the Chiefs.

Harold R. Kuntz, a sports anchor at Kansas City’s FOX 4, attended the awards and shared footage of the Hall of Fame tight end to his Twitter account.

Though Travis Kelce is not done earning awards for his time in the NFL he appears to have his sights set on what lies ahead.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes won ‘Best Male Athlete’ at 2024 ESPY Awards

Kansas City #Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes won the “Best Male Athlete” award at Thursday’s ESPY Awards.

Patrick Mahomes swept both of his individual ESPY Award nominations on Thursday night, taking home the title of “Best Male Athlete of the Year” for the second consecutive year after it was announced that he would win the “Best NFL Player” on Wednesday afternoon.

In a category that featured Los Angeles Angels/Dodgers all-star Shohei Ohtani, champion golfer Scottie Scheffler, and Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid, the Kansas City Chiefs superstar emerged victorious in back-to-back years. Comedian Nikki Glaser presented the award to head coach Andy Reid, who accepted it on Mahomes’ behalf and delivered a supportive speech for the reigning Super Bowl MVP.

“I’ve been around this kid for a few years now, and to watch him grow as a teammate and leader has been phenomenal. But really, more than that, to watch him grow as a father and husband has probably been the best part of that. It’s a real tribute to him.” said Reid. “We’re very lucky to have him in Kansas City. All of us are in the National Football League, but really, in Kansas City, we appreciate all he does for the city in itself and, obviously, for the organization.”

Mahomes finished 2023 with 4,183 yards passing and 27 touchdowns. He showed his grit and perseverance in the postseason by winning two road games, winning his third Super Bowl MVP, and leading the Chiefs to their third Lombardi Trophy in five years.

“On behalf of Patrick, he knows this is a team award; he would want me to make sure that I say he is all about the team. I’ve heard people get up here, some great coaches get up here and talk and do a phenomenal job, and players, likewise athletes. But this kid comes in the huddle every day, every practice, and says, Let’s be great.” said Reid. “It doesn’t come out like it’s corny, right? The guys respect and understand it, and that’s how he goes about his business on and off the field. My hat goes off to him for that. And again, on behalf of Patrick, thank you to the ESPYs and all our great fans and Chiefs Nation there; we appreciate all they do in supporting us, so thank you.”

Mahomes will have to wait to see if he and the Chiefs will win yet another accolade when the “Best Team” award is announced later in the ceremony.

AP has asked Comeback Player voters to alter criteria after Damar Hamlin snub

Damar Hamlin surprisingly did not win the award in 2023:

After Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco won the 2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award over Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin, the voting criteria have been clarified by the Associated Press.

The AP has emphasized that the winner should be a player who overcame injury or illness.

In Flacco’s case, that did not happen. Rather, the quarterback led the Cleveland Browns to the playoffs after a poor stint with the New York Jets, and he won the honor.

Flacco’s win was a shock as the expected winner was Hamlin. He did not bring it home despite returning to the NFL after his on-field cardiac arrest late in the 2022 season.

The AP released this statement on the matter:

Jac Caglianone named Perfect Game Two-Way Player of the Year

Jac Caglianone is taking home the Perfect Game Two-Way Player of the Year Award for the second year in a row.

For the second year in a row, Florida’s [autotag]Jac Caglianone[/autotag] is the Perfect Game Two-Way Player of the Year, following an official announcement on Tuesday.

“Caglianone has run away with this award and (he) took things to another level with his comprehensive skillset,” national crosschecker Vincent Cervino said. “The 6-5/250 physically imposing lefty from Tampa, FL refined his game this year by improving his bat head accuracy and dialing in the strike zone on the mound.”

Caglianone matched his power numbers from a year ago and refined the other metrics scouts had questions about.

“Heading to the College World Series, he is batting .411 with 33 home runs and 68 RBI while slugging .860, reaching base over 50% of his at-bats and accumulating an OPS of 1.392 so far.”

Cervino noted that Caglianone’s improved pitch selection is one of the biggest reasons for his success this year. His 52-to-25 strikeout-to-walk ratio is proof that Caglianone’s eye has refined, and his splits against lefties aren’t bad considering the historical trend.

There’s also the pitching…

“On the mound, he is currently 5-2 in his 15 starts with a 4.71 ERA and limited opponents to a .225 batting average. While he can still run the fastball into the upper-90s, he dialed things back a bit and put more value on location and secondary offering this year. In 72.2 IP so far, he has a strikeout-to-walk ration of 82:48 and has minimized damage by blending his pitches at a high level.”

Caglianone’s success as a pitcher was always going to come when he learned to control his fastball. It’s no surprise that a 94-mph fastball is easier to control than one coming in just shy of triple digits, and most college hitters struggle with the mid-90s.

This might be the first of several two-way awards won by Caglianone as the college baseball season draws to a close. The College Baseball Foundation will announce the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award on June 18.

‘ManningCast’ wins another Sports Emmy award

Peyton Manning’s popular ‘ManningCast’ has won an Emmy Award in each of its first three seasons, and it’s set to return for Year 4 in 2024.

The awards keep coming for “ManningCast,” the popular Omaha Productions alternate broadcast of “Monday Night Football” games on ESPN2.

The NFL program is hosted by Peyton Manning and his brother, Eli, a fellow two-time Super Bowl champion. Last week, the “ManningCast” took home a Sports Emmy award for Outstanding Live Series.

This is not the first Emmy the program has received recognition. After the first season, the “ManningCast” also won in the Outstanding Live Series category. Following the second season, Peyton won an Emmy for “Outstanding Personality/Event Analyst.”

The show’s popularity is likely to increase in 2024 after Peyton successfully recruited Bill Belichick to join the program as a recurring guest. The show is under contract with ESPN for a fourth season in 2024 with Peyton and Eli set to serve as commentators for 10 games again this fall.

After winning three Emmy awards in its first three seasons, the “ManningCast” is likely due for another extension from ESPN.

Filipowski named Karl Malone Award finalist

After he was named one of the five finalists on Thursday, Kyle Filipowski could join Zion Williamson as the only Blue Devils to win the Malone Award as the nation’s best power forward.

The five national finalists for the Karl Malone Award were announced on Wednesday, and Duke 7-footer Kyle Filipowski is one of the names in contention.

The Malone Award is given to the nation’s best power forward each season, and Filipowski joined Akron’s Enrique Freeman, Dayton’s DaRon Holmes II, San Diego State’s Jaedon LeDee, and Utah State’s Great Osobor as the last players remaining for the honor.

Filipowski is averaging 16.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists this season. He’s shooting 50.7% from the floor and 35.2% from the 3-point line, and he’s added 1.6 blocks and 1.0 steals on the defensive end.

Through 30 games this season, the Duke big man has eight double-doubles and 10 20-point games, including a 30-point performance against Georgia Tech back in January.’

Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis won the award last year, and Zion Williamson (2019) is the only Blue Devil to win the award in its 10-year history.

Johnny Manziel throws his support behind Reggie Bush’s Heisman Trophy fight

Johnny Manziel threw his support behind Reggie Bush, saying he won’t attend the Heisman Trophy award ceremony until Bush has his trophy back:

This is big of Johnny Manziel: the former Heisman Trophy winner and Texas A&M quarterback announced Saturday that he will decline to participate in the award’s annual ceremony until Reggie Bush has had his own Heisman Trophy returned to him.

Bush, the former New Orleans Saints running back, won the trophy for his efforts at USC back in 2005. But it was taken away from him after an NCAA investigation found that his family had received recruiting benefits which were not allowed at the time — and which are now popular across the college sports landscape with the legality of NIL programs. Bush has since taken legal action to fight for the recognition that he earned, and to get his trophy back.

Manziel, who won the Heisman Trophy himself in 2012, was one of the most exciting quarterbacks in college football in his prime; love him or hate him, fans were watching the Aggies every week. While he didn’t find great success at the pro level, Manziel has remained a fixture in the college football world and at the Heisman Trophy ceremony each year. He’s voted for the award every year and taken the stage along with other past winners.

But he says that’s not something he can continue to do in good conscience while Bush is left out in the cold. Bush’s 2005 win is the only instance the award has been vacated in its 89-year history. If more of Manziel’s peers took a stand alongside him in support of Bush, it’s tough to believe the powers that be could hold up under such high-profile pressure.

Duke forward Kyle Filipowski makes Naismith Trophy Midseason Team

Star 7-footer Kyle Filipowski is averaging 17.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game this season while upping his 3-point percentage to 34.5%. The production earned him some midseason recognition on the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team.

The Naismith Trophy announced its Men’s College Player of the Year Midseason Team on Thursday, and Duke forward Kyle Filipowski was one of the 30 names who made the cut.

Filipowski, a preseason All-American hopeful, is averaging 17.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game through 24 games this season, adding 2.8 assists, 1.8 blocks, and 1.1 steals to his average production. He’s shooting 49.8% from the floor and 34.5% from beyond the arc.

The Blue Devils 7-footer has scored 20 points in nine games this season, including a 30-point performance during a January win over Georgia Tech, and he’s recorded eight double-doubles.

He is currently seventh in the ACC in points per game and sixth in rebounds per game, one of just four players in the conference within the top 10 in both categories.

Three fellow ACC players made the midseason team, including Armando Bacot and RJ Davis from North Carolina and Clemson’s PJ Hall.

Former Tar Heel and eternal Duke rival Caleb Love, now playing for Arizona, also made the cutoff, as did defending Naismith Trophy winner (and presumed winner this year) Zach Edey from Purdue.
