OU, Bedlam to play host to big names with a number of prospects descending on Norman

Oklahoma takes on in-state rival Oklahoma State for Bedlam and will be doing so with a massive group of recruits in attendance. From @thatmanbryant

There’s a fairly significant amount of importance surrounding Bedlam this year. The amount of games left between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State has been reduced significantly with Oklahoma’s impending move to the SEC on the horizon.

We may have 2023 and 2024, but the rivalry will cease as we know it in the next few years. Every game has always mattered but these last few, like the one on Saturday night, will mean a lot more.

Additionally, Oklahoma is fighting for bowl eligibility. They need one more win to participate in 2022’s bowl season.

Lastly and arguably most importantly, Oklahoma has its biggest recruiting weekend of the football season with Oklahoma State coming to town. We’ll revisit 2022 Bedlam several years from now and look back and remember it as a pivotal moment in Oklahoma’s last five to ten years.

There are some big-time names across multiple recruiting classes that will be in attendance for Oklahoma including five-star DT and Texas A&M commit David Hicks and recently dubbed 2024 five-star DT David Stone. More than 20 recruits have already committed to being in Norman, some via social media and others per OUInsider.com.

5 things to consider when thinking about Oklahoma’s future

Oklahoma has had a rough year but here are five things to consider when considering the Sooners’ future. From @thatmanbryant

Oklahoma fans have experienced a roller coaster for the better part of the last 500 days. There was optimism after the 2020 season about the possibilities for that 2021 team. That optimism was dashed when their on-field performance never came close to the lofty expectations. There was a mid-season QB change involving a pair of former five-star quarterbacks.

After picking up a win over Texas in one of the greatest comebacks of all time, the Sooners’ offense stalled in late-season losses on the road to Baylor and Oklahoma State. The day following that loss to the Cowboys, Lincoln Riley bolted for the University of Southern California after gaslighting an entire fanbase that he wasn’t leaving (for LSU).

In the week that followed, Oklahoma hired Brent Venables. Despite the attrition suffered by the 2022 recruiting class after Riley’s departure, Venables and his staff helped put together a group that was viewed as the No. 8 recruiting class in the cycle.

Offseason expectations were fairly high (quite possibly, too high) as we rolled into the summer. Summer practices offered extreme optimism, as did the first three games.

A confounding loss to Kansas State, a team notorious for how they’ve played Oklahoma as of late, made us take a step back. The next week, Oklahoma barely got off the bus before getting blasted by TCU. The Horned Frogs now look like the favorites to win the Big 12 and possibly find themselves in the College Football Playoff.

Oklahoma lost quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the TCU loss and would be forced to play without him in the Red River Showdown. The Sooners got their bell rung by rivals Texas, losing 49-0. They ran the wildcat offense for the vast majority of the game with multiple scholarship quarterbacks dressed. That felt like rock bottom.

Gabriel returned the following week for homecoming against Kansas. The offense would shine, and the defense made some plays. The Sooners beat Iowa State in a game where Gabriel and the passing game didn’t have to carry the load before dropping their latest contest to Baylor, where the defense couldn’t stop the run.

We sit days away from Oklahoma going on the road to Morgantown to face the West Virginia Mountaineers. Oklahoma is not only 5-4, but their biggest rival appears to be in a better spot going forward as both look ahead to their eventual departure to the SEC.

Looks can be deceiving, and things can change from year to year. With that said, here are five things to consider or reconsider about Oklahoma’s future.

Sooners gaining momentum in race for California defensive lineman Ashton Sanders

Oklahoma continues to be the school with the most momentum to land three-star defensive tackle Ashton Sanders. From @thatmanbryant

Oklahoma has spent the last week and a half issuing offers for the 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes. One of the late 2023 offers went out to California defensive lineman Ashton Sanders. Sanders, a three-star defensive tackle who was once committed to California. He backed off that commitment in August and re-opened his recruitment.

He received his offer on Halloween and, in short order, received a prediction from Sooner Scoop’s Josh McCuistion.

If that wasn’t curious, more recruiting insiders have also logged predictions for Oklahoma to land the disruptive interior defender. Memphis Publisher’s Bryan Moss and Badger Blitz’s Jon McNamara have each flipped their predictions from Cal-Berkeley to Oklahoma in the last two days.

Oklahoma has seemingly positioned itself in a great spot for Ashton Sanders’ commitment. Todd Bates has locked in on another player as they continue to makeover the defensive line.

He looks more like a straightforward nose tackle in a four-man front akin to current Sooner Jeffery Johnson. In that scenario, he’d line up right over the center and try to collapse the interior from there. He’s got the size and strength to play in multiple defensive schemes.

With Early Signing Day in December, Oklahoma could have an answer soon on Sanders. Sanders told 247Sports’ Greg Biggins he plans to sign at Early Signing Day and graduate high school early.

Oklahoma Sooners receive Rivals Futurecast for 2023 3-star DT Ashton Sanders

After issuing an offer on Monday, the Oklahoma Sooners received a Rivals Futurecast from SoonerScoop’s Josh McCuistion for 2023 DL Ashton Sanders.

The Oklahoma Sooners are back in the defensive line game, looking to secure another piece for their 2023 recruiting class.

After submitting an offer to 2023 three-star defensive lineman Ashton Sanders on Halloween, the Sooners appear to be trending in a positive direction with Sanders. SoonerScoop.com’s Josh McCuistion, who covers recruiting for Rivals, issued a futurecast predicting the Sooners to land a commitment from the California native.

Once committed to the California Golden Bears, Sanders backed off that pledge in August and reopened his recruitment. He holds offers from Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Kansas, Washington, and Maryland, in addition to the recent offer from Oklahoma.

Sanders projects to play interior defensive line at the college level. He’s a load on the interior, standing 6-foot-1 and weighing over 300 pounds. The three-star prospect has the size to bully interior offensive linemen and the athleticism to beat them with quickness as well. Sanders is strong at the point of attack and displays great effort in pursuit. He does a great job working to get off blocks and plays with really good leverage.

For Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, Calif. Sanders plays up and down the defensive line in three and four-man fronts. He also plays tight end, tackle, and guard on the offensive side.

For the Sooners, he probably best projects as a zero or 1-technique nose tackle in Brent Venables’ defense, but he has the athleticism to play defensive end in three-man alignments as well.

After missing out on blue-chip prospects David Hicks and Jordan Renaud, Ashton Sanders would be a great addition to the Sooners’ 2023 recruiting class. He’s got the size and tools to be a disruptive player and has a ton of upside at the collegiate level.

Wisconsin lands Crystal Ball Prediction for 2023 three-star DL Ashton Sanders

After de-committing from Cal, Wisconsin has picked up a crystal ball prediction for a three-star DL in the 2023 recruiting class:

On Monday, 247Sports writer Jackson Moore gave his Crystal Ball Prediction for 2023 defensive lineman Ashton Sanders out of Los Angeles, California, to commit to the University of Wisconsin.

This prediction from Moore, albeit low in confidence (1), comes on the heels of a de-commitment from Cal.

Per the 247Sports composite, Sanders is the No. 658 overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, the No. 74 DL in the country, and the No. 53 player in California.

The Cathedral High School standout also holds offers from Arizona State, Colorado, Fresno State, Kansas, Nevada, Notre Dame, Utah, Washington, and Washington State.

According to MaxPreps, as a junior, Sanders registered 47 tackles, 10 TFL, three sacks, and a forced fumble in nine games.

His potential addition to the program would be significant for the Badgers amid an underwhelming 2023 recruiting cycle.

You can watch his junior season HUDL film here.

Former Badgers DL Target Ashton Sanders Re-opens His Recruitment

After de-committing from Cal on Sunday, a former high-priority DL recruit of the Badgers officially re-opens his recruitment:

In June, 2023 three-star defensive lineman Ashton Sanders committed to the University of California Berkeley after previously announcing a final two that included Wisconsin.

On Sunday night, Sanders de-committed from Cal and officially re-opened his recruitment, saying, “This has nothing to do with the program at Cal nor my relationship with the coaches. I feel this is what’s best for me right now and will be re-opening my recruitment.”

With UW being so firmly in the mix the first time around, it’ll be interesting to see if the Badgers throw their hat back in the ring after experiencing a rough patch on the recruiting trail as of late.

The California native announced his de-commitment to the University of California via his Twitter account:
