Pac-12 Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Pac-12 preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Forget all the monster changes, moves, and speculation about the future for a moment. This year should be a whole lot of fun for a few key reasons.

USC is going to be a blast – there’s going to be as much attention on the football teams, at least for a few months before expansion talk cranks up even more – and the divisions are going bye-bye.

There’s no more Pac-12 North and South with the goal to win the six-team division. Now the conference race comes down to who the top two teams are overall, and it should mean the season comes down to the last day of the regular season.

The schedules play a massive role.

Who misses USC? Who has to play Utah in Salt Lake City? Who has to travel late in the season, and who has to make a longer road trip? It all matters in the 2022 Pac-12 college football predictions for every game.

Arizona State Sun Devils Preview 2022

This thing can’t get going, and worse yet, it’s taking a step back.

Herm Edwards was a bit of an outside-the-box choice, and he’s been okay with two eight-wins seasons, a seven-win campaign, and that 2-2 2022 season, but last year was when it was supposed to all take off.

Arizona State had the experience, the quarterback, the talent, and the years of rebuilding under Edwards to be a threat to win the Pac-12 title, but the team fell flat far too often in an uneven run.

Issues off the field, big losses to the transfer portal – BIG losses – and with the Pac-12 South looking like it’s about to make a turn up – USC is about to be a thing, Arizona is better, UCLA should be stronger – this is a true make-or-break year.

All that, and the call of Edwards over current Florida head coach Billy Napier is looming larger now.

But it’s not all doom and gloom.

There might have been a wave of players gone to the draft and the transfer portal, but Edwards and ASU were active on the other end. The starting 22 should be good, the schedule is manageable, and the expectations now – compared to last season – aren’t there.

Arizona State Sun Devils Preview 2022: Offense

The offense certainly wasn’t bad – the running game was terrific at times – but the offense only averaged 386 yards and 28 points per game, the passing attack wasn’t explosive enough, and there were times when the whole thing stalled.

QB Jayden Daniels is gone now to LSU, leading rusher Rachaad White is off to the NFL, top receiver Ricky Pearsall and LV Bunkley-Shelton are taking off,  and the best offensive lineman – Kellen Diesch – is gone. However …

The offense will be fine thanks to the transfer portal. Alabama transfer Paul Tyson and Florida transfer Emory Jones might not be Daniels, but they can play – Jones is a veteran who’s been through the big SEC games.

The receiving corps is a concern with all the big losses, but getting Cam Johnson from Vanderbilta helps. As long as the passing game is efficient, all will be fine because …

The running game should be terrific. Losing White and his hard-running style is hardly a plus, but Wyoming transfer Xazavian Valladay is a great talent who should go off. Again, Emory Jones can run – he took off for 759 yards last year for the Gators.

Even with all the changes across the board, the O line will be fine. There isn’t a Diesch, but help from the transfer portal and decent returning options will form a solid group.

Arizona State Sun Devils Preview 2022: Defense

The Sun Devil D balled out. It might not have been a huge season overall, but the defense lived up to the expectations, leading the Pac-12 in total defense and scoring D.

The transfer portal didn’t hit this group as hard as graduation did. However, several key parts are back, the work through the transfer portal might even have upgraded areas – the secondary got a huge boost – and there’s no reason to think the production can’t keep going.

Start in the secondary. The pass defense picked off 16 passes, it was among the best in the Pac-12, and it reloaded at safety with Hawaii transfer Khoury Bethley leading the way, and with help coming in to boost up the corner options.

The front seven might have lost parts – especially on the line – but again, things should be okay with help from the transfer portal. Mississippi State’s Rodney Groce has the potential to break out in the linebacking corps, and Nesta Jade Silvera is a veteran big-body insta-fit for the interior.

Good tackling LB Merlin Robertson only seems like he’s been around since the Frank Kush era, and there are decent pass rushing options with the pressure coming from several spots.

Josh Christopher plans slower, smarter approach to second Rockets season

Josh Christopher on expectations for his second NBA season: “I think I will be slower. I will look more confident and less timid. I think I have become a smarter basketball player.”

HOUSTON — Rockets guard Josh Christopher took the pitching mound at Minute Maid Park, home of Major League Baseball’s Astros, in the same manner he does taking the court at Toyota Center.

Cool, calm and collected.

Christopher, picked by the Rockets in the first round of the 2021 NBA draft, was in attendance to throw out a ceremonial first pitch before Thursday’s series finale between the Astros and Texas Rangers.

“It was everything I expected to be honest,” Christopher said. “Ever since I got here (Houston) they have shown love and been supportive. For that love from the Rockets to transfer over to the Astros and to be a part of something special like this is a blessing. I appreciate it.”

The second-year player out of Arizona State has been busy this summer preparing for the upcoming season. Christopher participated in the 2022 NBA Summer League and averaged 19.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists while playing 26.8 minutes per game.

He has also been in Houston most of the summer working in the weight room and Rockets practice facility with teammates as Houston prepares for training camp in September.

“I have been working and resting my body,” Christopher said of his summer routine. “Building chemistry with the guys that have been here and the new guys and just having fun. As much time as we can get on the floor with each other prior to this season, its going to be best for us. So whether its Summer League or just getting up jumpers and playing five-on-five in Toyota. Whatever it is. It helps.”

After a brief stint with Houston’s G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Christopher worked his way into the rotation to become one of the first reserve names called by Stephen Silas.

On Thursday, Christopher talked in detail about his adjustments to his game entering year two.

“I think I will be slower, I will look more confident and less timid,” the 20-year-old told reporters. “I think you will be able to tell I have a year under my belt. I think I have become a smarter basketball player. Learned where I could be more effective. I am still learning the right spots to be on defense.”

The Rockets will play their first preseason game against the San Antonio Spurs at Toyota Center on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. CDT.

An advanced stats look at Jayden Daniels

Here’s an advanced stats look at Jayden Daniels in 2021

We still don’t know much about who will start at quarterback for LSU when the season begins in less than a month.

We do know that it is a three-horse race between Myles Brennan, Garrett Nussmeier, and [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag].

Of those three, Daniels has the most experience. Brennan has made a few starts and Nussmeier has seen some action, but neither has given us a huge sample size.

Daniels started three years at Arizona State, which means we have a wealth of information.

The situation Daniels is in now is different than the one at Arizona State. He has better wide receivers and the coaching staff isn’t in complete turmoil.

That doesn’t mean we can’t learn anything about who Daniels was as a Sun Devil. Let’s jump right in and see what the advanced stats tell us about his last three years.

See It: Notre Dame Shamrock Series uniform photo gallery close ups

Awesome or too much like Georgia Tech?

As expected, Notre Dame released their [autotag]Shamrock Series[/autotag] uniforms for their October date in Las Vegas with [autotag]BYU[/autotag].  The release came in epic fashion as [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag], [autotag]Isaiah Foskey[/autotag], and [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag] all participated in a four minute video that was essentially a tribute to “The Hangover” which was released 13 years ago (where does the time go?).

Notre Dame has also released photos of the uniforms that to me look about as good as any alternate uniform we have seen the Fighting Irish wear in a very long time.  My favorite Shamrock Series uniforms the Irish have ever worn came in the 2013 game against [autotag]Arizona State[/autotag] and the white is in line with those.

The one issue I have with them is the because the pants are plain the uniform as a whole looks exactly what [autotag]Georgia Tech[/autotag] wears regularly.

Whatever the case, these are still some of the better alternates Notre Dame has rocked and I can’t wait to see how good they look in action.

Notre Dame heading to Bahamas for Thanksgiving weekend tournament

How would you like to spend Thanksgiving with the women’s basketball team?

We don’t know what will happen to Notre Dame this season. What we do know is the team will enjoy Thanksgiving dinner in a tropical paradise. That’s because the Irish are one of six programs to be invited to the 20th edition of the Goombay Splash in Bimini, Bahamas. The tournament begins Nov. 24, this year’s date for Thanksgiving, and ends Nov. 26 with each team getting either two or three games along the way.

The Irish’s first game will be played Thanksgiving against American, a first-time opponent. Arizona State awaits both teams regardless of the result because it plays the loser of the Thanksgiving game the next day and the winner the day after. George Mason and LSU face each other in the Thanksgiving game to determine who will play on which day.

If you have to be away from your family during a major holiday, it’s hard to pick against the Bahamas as a location. Don’t believe me? Let’s go back a few years and watch Central Michigan’s reaction to going to the inaugural Bahamas Bowl, which was held on Christmas Eve:

Josh Christopher leads summer Rockets into Thursday’s opener

Summer league play starts tonight for the Rockets, and second-year guard Josh Christopher is excited to lead Houston’s new rookies. “If you ask me to play basketball, I will play basketball.”

Most players at the NBA summer league in Las Vegas are rookies just drafted by their respective teams. Others are players who have been on an NBA roster and are trying to showcase their skills to land on a regular-season roster. And then you have those like Houston Rockets second-year guard Josh Christopher, who simply loves to play basketball.

“This decision was made before I signed my contract, or during the process,” Christopher said as the Rockets finished a three-day mini-camp in Houston. “I knew I was going to play. You guys know how I am. I want to play. If you ask me to play basketball, I will play basketball.”

Christopher was drafted in the first round of the 2021 NBA draft along with teammates Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, and Usman Garuba. After a slow start and a brief stint with the Rockets G League affiliate Rio Grande Vipers, the former Arizona State shooting guard solidified his place in the Rockets rotation as a go-to reserve for head coach Stephen Silas.

His breakout game came against former Rockets superstar James Harden and the Brooklyn Nets, where he went 7-for-7 from the field and finished with 18 points on his 20th birthday. As his playing time increased, so did his performances. It showed when he scored a career-high 30 points versus Minnesota in April, becoming the first reserve for the Rockets to score over 30 points since Austin Rivers in 2020.

Christopher appeared in 74 games this past season and averaged 7.9 points per game, shooting 44.8% from the field and 30.0% on 3-pointers. Undoubtedly, he would love to improve the latter figure.

As with any player who loves to be in the gym, Christopher has specific things he wants to work on during the summer league action.

“My priorities for myself in summer league is to be very solid, be able to playmake, and win ball games, of course,” Christopher said this week. “I guess I have a year under my belt now, so I want to be able to help the new guys feel as comfortable as possible and help them succeed, as well as myself and the whole Rockets organization.”

Houston takes on Orlando at the Thomas & Mack Center in Thursday’s opening game of the 2022 summer league. It’s a matchup of top rookies Jabari Smith (picked at No. 3 by the Rockets) and Paolo Banchero (No. 1 to the Magic), with tipoff set for 9 p.m. CDT on ESPN.

Despite being ‘a handful,’ Herm Edwards says Jack Jones is in good spot with Patriots

“He’s been a handful, but he’s a good kid. Loves football. Loves competing.”

The New England Patriots knew they needed to add depth at the cornerback position following the departure of J.C. Jackson.

Bill Belichick didn’t go early in the draft, but he did select Marcus Jones in the third round and Jack Jones in the fourth round. Marcus is a utility player out of Houston that can do many different things on the field, ranging from punt returns to even playing some offense. Jack is a gritty cornerback that would’ve likely had a higher draft stock without some of his past off-field issues.

Jack played for two seasons at USC and eventually left after having academic issues and being arrested for breaking into a Panda Express. He later went to Arizona State and did a little better, but was suspended after a fight in practice.

His agent sent a letter to all 32 NFL teams with the ways that he will prevent off-field issues going forward. Belichick bought in and now has a solid cornerback from the lower rounds of the draft.

Herm Edwards was Jack’s college coach and he discussed his former cornerback while talking with ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

“It’s a good spot for him, as there will be people there to keep the thumb on him,” Edwards said. “I told him, ‘You’re at a place now where you have to check all the boxes.’ He’s been a handful, but he’s a good kid. Loves football. Loves competing. Once he’s in the building, on the field, he’s all about football now.”

Jack spent some time in mandatory minicamp competing with the starters alongside Jalen Mills. He has real potential to land in the starting lineup as a rookie.

“He’s a very explosive athlete. Very competitive. He has pretty good ball skills, finding and turning and locating the ball,” Edwards said. “He has good anticipation. Sometimes his eyes get him in trouble, because he’s on a mission to intercept balls and he’ll guess a little bit. And weight-wise [177 pounds], you’d wish he’d be a little bit bigger. But he’s not afraid to tackle. He’ll throw his body at people.”

If Jack can avoid off-field issues, he could be a steal for the Patriots in the fourth round.

Linn Grant becomes first woman to win on DP World Tour, crushing field of men and women by nine shots at Scandinavian Mixed

One week after an historic $10 million purse at the U.S. Women’s Open, Linn Grant made another leap for the game.

One week after the women played for an historic $10 million purse at the U.S. Women’s Open, Linn Grant made another leap for the game by becoming the first woman to win on the DP World Tour.

Grant, 22, crushed the field of 78 men and women by nine strokes with a closing 64 at the Scandinavian Mixed, hosted by Henrik and Annika. The nearest woman finished 14 back.

Beating the men, she said, was most important.

“All week i just felt like it’s the girls against the guys,” she said, “and whoever picks up that trophy represents the field.”

Grant, a former Arizona State standout, came into the final round with a two-stroke lead and birdied five of the first six holes at Halmstad Golf Club to begin her tear. She posted 26 birdies and an eagle in her 24-under performance in front of massive crowds. Her nine-stroke victory is the largest on the DP World Tour so far this season.

Swedish co-host Henrik Stenson, a six-time winner on the PGA Tour, including the 2016 British Open, finished second along with Scotland’s Marc Warren, who closed with a 65. Stenson shot 70 on Sunday.

The unique event, co-sanctioned by the LET and DP World Tour, features two different sets of tees for the men and women, who competed for the same $2 million purse. A total of 30 Swedes took part in the competition. Grant, who lives about an hour away from the course, embraced Swedish icon Annika Sorenstam after her extraordinary triumph.

Grant has now won three times in six starts this season, including her last event, The Mithra Belgian Ladies Open in late May. Grant won $30,000 for that victory in Belgium, and $319,717 dollars for the Scandinavian Mixed.

“I just hope that people recognize women’s golf, more sponsors go to LET than the men’s tour,” said Grant. “Hopefully this pumps up the women’s game a little bit more.”

Meet the 15 teams to make the first cut at the 2022 NCAA Championship

Oklahoma leads the way as the only team under par.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — After 54 holes of stroke play the field of 30 teams at the 2022 NCAA Div. I Men’s Golf Championship is now down to 15 following the first cut on Sunday evening.

Oklahoma leads the way as the lone team under par at 1 under, four shots clear of in-state rivals Oklahoma State and six clear of third-place Vanderbilt. Seven of the teams to play in the morning wave on Sunday took advantage of the early conditions to solidify their spot inside the cut, leaving the rest of the field to duke it out for the final eight spots.

After Monday’s final round of stroke play an individual national champion will be crowned and the field will be cut to the top eight teams to set the bracket for match play. Meet the 15 teams competing for one of those coveted match play positions.
