Utah vs Arizona State Game Preview

Why Utah Will Win

Anything interesting happening at Arizona State?

Yeah, the storyline is the firing of head coach Herm Edwards, but if the team doesn’t get trucked by Eastern Michigan the change isn’t made.

Basically, the team isn’t playing well enough.

The Sun Devils have been a disaster on third downs with the lack of a consistent passing game a big issue. The pass rush isn’t helping the cause, there aren’t enough big stops from the D, and here comes the brutish Utah offense that’s not going to do anything too crazy.

The Ute passing game is more than fine, but it’ll be the pounding running game that should take over. How did Eastern Michigan win last week? It powered away for over 300 rushing yards and two scores.

Firing Edwards isn’t going to change the run D right away. However …

Why Arizona State Will Win

Can interim head coach Shaun Aguano make any sort of difference right away?

The Sun Devils have playmakers. Emory Jones is a solid all-around quarterback, Xazavian Valladay is a good back, and the defensive front has the ability and talent to be much, much better than it showed against Eastern Michigan.

For all of the issues over the first three games, the offensive line hasn’t been awful, the secondary is okay, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, there’s a problem.

Utah isn’t going to get cute. Cameron Rising and the passing game might be playing well, but the offense is going to power away behind its terrific offensive line, it’ll control the clock, and it’ll grind its way to the win.

Arizona State will come out with a good effort, and it’ll give it a good push, but it won’t be able to hold up against the Ute lines.

Urban Meyer comments on return to coaching

Believe him?

It didn’t take long for a few head coaching positions to become available in college football as Nebraska has fired Scott Frost and Arizona State has already moved on from Herm Edwards.  A name that has been brought up by fans of both programs already is one that has won a lot in the college ranks, but is also one that doesn’t seem too likely to get back into coaching anytime soon.

Former Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is of course who I’m talking about, or as he’s better known in these parts, Notre Dame’s wide receivers coach from 1996-2000.

Meyer recently told On3 that he doesn’t see himself returning to coaching.

“I’m really happy with Fox and really happy with the lifestyle right now,” Meyer said. “Flying in today to see grandkids. I’m happy with what I am doing.”

Both of these things may be true in this very moment and perhaps they stay that way for a long time but even if they do, I certainly am one that finds it hard to believe Meyer will want the Jacksonville debacle to be his last run in coaching, even if the lifestyle is a grind.

Kenny Dillingham as an Arizona State HC candidate? It may not be crazy…

Is Oregon OC Kenny Dillingham really a candidate to take over as the Arizona State head coach? It seems crazy, but the idea is picking up steam.

Over the last few days, the head coaching vacancy for the Arizona State Sun Devils has played out as one would typically expect. With Herm Edwards shown the door while literally walking off of the football field on Saturday night, the ensuing hours and days have been spent with media outlets cobbling together lists of potential candidates to take over as the next head man in Tempe.

There’s one thing that I didn’t expect in all of this. I didn’t expect for the Oregon Ducks to be involved.

[lawrence-related id=29841]

Usually, prominent teams like the Ducks are used to being mentioned in coaching vacancies, as top coordinators are poached to run their own teams. We saw it with Andy Avalos, and Marcus Arroyo, and Joe Moorhead, and several others over the years. This coaching staff, however, is so new, and so young, that I thought Oregon might be spared from having coordinators mentioned in coaching rumors.

Nonetheless, offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham’s name has been mentioned in the ranks of guys who could potentially take over at Arizona State.

Seems crazy, right? He’s been an OC before, but this is his first stint as a play-caller, and the top offensive mind on a team with a defensive head coach, and he’s only got three games under his belt. Doesn’t that feel premature?

[lawrence-related id=29848]

It may be, but Dillingham and his offense have been impressive early on. With an explosion on the stat sheet in the last two weeks, the Ducks’ young and aggressive OC has shown an ability to mix schemes, throw numerous personnel packages out there with success, and overall transform what was viewed as a boring Oregon offense in a matter of months. On top of all of this, you have to consider the Arizona factor for Dillingham — the 32-year-old was born in Phoenix, and he attended Arizona State and worked with the Sun Devils as an offensive analyst from 2014-15.

It’s not just us throwing Dillingham’s name out there in the mix. There are numerous pieces from high-ranking media outlets speculating as to who the next man might be in Tempe. Check out this excerpt from The Athletic’s article titled ‘Sleeping giant? Arizona State needs Kenny Dillingham to wake it from its coma:’

Arizona State doesn’t need a coach with a familiar name to trick fans into thinking it did something with this hire. It needs someone it can grow with.

The 32-year-old Dillingham fits the bill in every way. The offensive coordinator at Oregon is an Arizona native who not only has ties to the Grand Canyon State but also is the owner of an ASU degree and an impressive resume. His age isn’t a hurdle. It is an asset, especially in a football culture in which young, offensive-minded coaches are in style and have found success at every level. He loves Arizona and wouldn’t be quick to bolt from The Valley once he builds something.

Not convinced? Here’s an excerpt from 247Sports:

If ASU went totally to a young up-and-coming guy who’s a coordinator, I think maybe Kenny Dillingham at Oregon. He’s someone who has deep ties and probably would have a lot of booster support. He’s from Scottsdale. Kind of the old money crowd, big boosters, I think there’s going to be a push for him as a sort of an out-of-the-box candidate if they go with someone who’s really keen on young players, NIL and a lot of these things going on right now.

It may seem like I’m trying to push Dillingham out the door, but let me be clear, that is not my intention here. Rather, the goal of this article is to offer a bit of a wake-up call for Oregon fans, similar to the one that I had recently as I realized the realness of this situation.

When Dan Lanning hired Dillingham, I knew that in a matter of years, whether it’s 2 or 5, there was a good chance that Oregon’s hot-shot OC would be poached by a bigger school to be the head man. That’s how the college football world works anymore.

I never thought the poaching may start before he’s even coached through half of a season at Oregon. That’s something I didn’t have on my bingo card.

Arizona State vs Eastern Michigan Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

The Eagles pushed Louisiana and made it a fight for a while, and then they hit a wall and got lapped in the 49-21 loss.

There might be a few issues – more on that in a moment – but QB Taylor Powell is putting up big yards, the offense is moving the chains, and Arizona State’s secondary has to prove itself after struggling a bit against Oklahoma State.

The Arizona State offense is among the worst in college football on third downs, the passing attack hasn’t done much yet, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Arizona State Will Win

Here come the takeaways. It’s not because the Arizona State defense is great at cranking up the production to force mistakes, but because Taylor Powell has thrown seven interceptions in two games.

The Sun Devils will get the running game going again. It struggled against an Oklahoma State defense that’s once again among the best in the Big 12, and now it’s about to roll.

Eastern Kentucky and Louisiana had success on the ground, but they were too busy throwing on the Eagle defense. Arizona State isn’t going to mess around, it’ll get its strong backfield moving, and it should control the game from the start.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Eastern Michigan has enough offense to be plucky, and Arizona State can’t just show up and think it’ll come up with a layup of a win, but this won’t get into the fourth quarter.

Arizona State will need a little while to get going, but it’ll end up with over 250 yards on the ground with a few big plays, and the takeaways will come in the second half.

David Puig said playing opportunities made for ‘pretty easy decision’ to leave Arizona State and join LIV Golf

“LIV was very supportive, and they gave me two exemptions as an amateur, which I really appreciated them a lot.”

David Puig will make his professional debut at this week’s LIV Golf Invitational Series stop outside Chicago, but the former standout from Arizona State is no rookie on the upstart circuit.

The 20-year-old Spaniard played in two previous events for the Greg Norman-led and Saudi Arabia-backed series as an amateur this summer, finishing T-41 at LIV’s debut in London and T-42 at LIV Golf Bedminster. Puig said his reason for leaving college early (and after the start of the fall season) was because LIV provided him playing opportunities.

“LIV was very supportive, and they gave me two exemptions as an amateur, which I really appreciated them a lot,” explained Puig. “They also gave me an opportunity to play against the best players in the world, so it was obviously a tough decision to leave ASU, but it was a pretty easy decision to join LIV.”

When Puig was later asked if he had looked into PGA Tour exemptions while at Arizona State and if he had written to the Phoenix Open or other events, his response was, “Not really.”

“At least for what I know, getting into the Phoenix Open is pretty tough, especially when a guy is from Spain. I would say, I don’t know, Preston, one of my teammates, he had the chance to play in the Phoenix Open, and he deserves it. He’s an awesome guy, awesome player, but I think when he was 10 years old he was already a member at TPC Scottsdale or helped with the tournament somehow or something like that,” Puig said referencing the Arizona State’s Preston Summerhays, who received an exemption to the 2022 WM Phoenix Open. Other recent college players to earn exemptions as amateurs include Matthew Wolff, an All-American at Oklahoma State, in 2019 and Jon Rahm, also a Sun Devil who hails from Spain, in 2015.

“Yeah, and then on the other tournaments, being from Spain, I would say it’s just pretty tough because I would say they’d rather give the exemptions to people that are local.”

Quite a bit of speculation for someone who admittedly didn’t really make an effort.

Puig was not selected for Arizona State’s first event of the fall season, a second-place showing at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate down the road from campus at Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale. This summer during his time with LIV Golf he played for Cleeks GC in Bedminster and Fireballs GC in London. This week he’ll tee it up for newly-announced Joaquin Niemann’s Torque GC.

“I’m not nervous. You know, at the end when you play golf, it’s pretty much every time the same. You’ve just got to hit a golf ball and just try to make as less shots possible,” Puig said. “Obviously first tournament as a pro, I’ve got some expectations that I want to do or get, like I don’t know, play a round under par, which I still never did in LIV, or had a chance to win or help my team to win, too.

“But I’m not nervous. It’s just what I do every day. I mean, I’ve practiced for this, to try to be one of the best players in the world. Yeah, I’m not nervous, I’m just excited to start going.”

Arizona State’s David Puig turns professional, will make debut at LIV Golf Chicago

Puig previously played in two LIV Golf events as an amateur.

On the eve of the final match of the 2022 NCAA Championship back in May, news broke that Arizona State junior David Puig would be competing in the first LIV Golf Invitational Series event in June.

This week he travels to Illinois, but it’s not to play for the Sun Devils. Instead of competing at the Fighting Illini Invitational in Olympia Fields, Puig will make his professional debut at LIV Golf Chicago at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove.

The Spaniard has made two starts for the Greg Norman-led and Saudi Arabia-backed series as an amateur, finishing T-41 in London and T-42 at LIV Golf Bedminster. LIV Golf events feature no cuts, 54 holes of shotgun start play and fields of just 48 players and 12 teams. Supported by the Kingdom’s Public Investment Fund, the series has been criticized as a means for Saudi Arabia to sportswash its controversial human rights record.

Week 2 Scouting Notebook: A look at potential Chargers prospects

Here are a handful of prospects to watch for Los Angeles Chargers fans during Week 2 of college football.

The second week of college football is here, which means we are back with another edition of the Scouting Notebook.

The Scouting Notebook will feature prospects to keep an eye on throughout the day. While some may think it’s too early to start talking about the 2023 NFL draft, there’s never a bad time to talk about the future of the Chargers.

With that being said, here are a handful of prospects to watch for in Week 2.

Appalachian State v. Texas A&M

Time: 12:30pm PT

Where to Watch: ESPN2

The Chargers could continue to look for a twitchy speed receiver this draft if DeAndre Carter and Jalen Guyton don’t perform to expectations. If they do, I’d bet A&M receiver/running back hybrid Ainias Smith will be near the top of the shopping list. Smith has the agility of a running back as a route runner and a ballcarrier after the catch and seems like a natural fit for the jet sweep and reverse plays currently reserved for Carter. But at 5’10”, 190 pounds, there are some questions about if Smith will ever be more than a gadget player. He’s only been a full-time WR for a short time, though, and I think his ceiling is sky-high. He’ll have a chance to show how far he’s come against Mountaineers CB Steven Jones Jr., an equally small and twitchy corner whose NFL projection is likely in the slot despite college reps on the boundary. LA has shown they like players with that sort of flexibility under Brandon Staley.

Other players to watch:

Appalachian State – EDGE Nick Hampton, RB Camerun Peoples, G Cooper Hodges

Texas A&M – G Layden Robinson, CB Myles Jones, S Demani Richardson

Arizona State vs. Oklahoma State

Time: 4:30 pm PT

Where to Watch: ESPN2

DT Nesta Jade Silvera, Arizona State

Staley made strides to rebuild his defense as he desired, but some pieces are still missing. The interior defensive line is still one of the softer position groups on the team. Nesta Jade Silvera, a senior Miami transfer, would fit Staley’s model like a glove. Silvera is extremely flexible and athletic for a guy weighing 315 pounds. Effort and intensity dominate his game, and he will frequently run sideline to sideline in pursuit of stopping the ball carrier. A strong performance against No. 11 Oklahoma State could put him on the map.

USC v. Stanford

Time: 4:30pm PT

Where to Watch: ABC

Stanford is a tight-end factory, and junior Benjamin Yurosek is their latest NFL prospect. Built-in more of an old-school mold, Yurosek is a blocker first, receiver second. He’s a solid in-line blocker thanks to a solid base and adequate strength, but that extra power comes at the expense of twitch as a route runner and receiver. However, Yurosek does possess strong hands that rein in targets in contested catch situations, and he does have a little bit of wiggle as a run-after-catch guy. He’ll have a nice matchup against USC’s Shane Lee, an Alabama transfer who’s a significantly better coverage man than run stopper. Lee has the explosiveness to limit what Yurosek can do in the receiving game, but Yurosek has the sand in his pants to keep Lee from affecting Stanford’s run game.

Other players to watch:

USC – G Andrew Vorhees, IDL Tuli Tulipulotu, WR Jordan Addison

Stanford – OT Walter Rouse, CB Kyu Blu Kelly, QB Tanner McKee

Oregon State vs. Fresno State

Time: 7:30 pm PT

Where to Watch: CBSN

WR Jalen Cropper, Fresno State

The Chargers might be in the market for a slot receiver depending on how they value Keenan Allen and the remainder of his $80 million contract. The team has a potential out after the 2024 season. If a 2022 receiver selection shows promise, that may make the decision easier. Fresno State wide receiver Jalen Cropper is elusive in the open field, demonstrates a good understanding of spatial awareness when attacking zone, and his short area separation pops on tape. Cropper is outstanding at catching the ball away from his body and his long arms expand the throwing window considerably. He faces Oregon State this weekend on the heels of an encouraging season opener against Cal Poly, a contest in which he caught seven balls for 63 yards.

Mississippi State v. Arizona

Time: 8:00pm PT

Where to Watch: FS1

If there was ever a time for Arizona CB Christian Roland-Wallace to show out, it’d be Saturday night against the Bulldogs’ Air Raid offense. The 6’0”, 200-pounder splits time between the boundary and the slot, again a plus for the Chargers, and figures to be targeted often in a game that will likely feature at least 50 pass attempts from Mississippi State QB Will Rogers. Roland-Wallace is also a fierce run supporter, so don’t be surprised if he makes a few plays in the flats as well. When he is in coverage, watch for Bulldogs WR Austin Williams, a sixth-year slot receiver who Mississippi State uses as their chain mover. Williams is 6’3”, 205, making him bigger than a typical slot body, but he plays like a true inside receiver. Think Michael Bandy, if Bandy was four or five inches taller.

Other players to watch:

Mississippi State – C LaQuinston Sharp, IDL Cameron Young, LB Nathaniel Watson

Arizona – LB/S Christian Young, OT Paiton Fears, WR Jacob Cowing

Arizona State vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

Shhhhhhhhh. Arizona State is going to be good.

Completely blown off in a Pac-12 with USC making all the noise, and with Utah and Oregon getting plenty of attention, Arizona State got through a rough offseason and potentially upgraded in a few areas thanks to the transfer portal.

Former Florida quarterback Emory Jones is in Tempe because Anthony Richardson is Anthony Richardson. He was solid in the 40-3 win over Northern Arizona, former Wyoming RB Xazavian Valladay is in for a big year, and the starting 22 will be more than just competitive.

Oklahoma State might be strong, but it showed potential flaws in the 58-44 win over Central Michigan. The Chippewas roared back late, QB Daniel Richardson went off, and RB Lew Nichols was able to do okay despite being bottled up. The ASU backfield is going to produce, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

It’s okay.

Oklahoma State was ripping apart Central Michigan and took its foot off the gas in the fourth – it really wasn’t a big deal, unless you invested.

The offense was unstoppable in the first half, Spencer Sanders was wonderful with over 400 passing yards, four touchdown passes, and two touchdown runs, and the defense was able to hold up fine before the final 15 minutes.

It was enough of a late collapse, though, to get the great defense fired up for this week. It’s going to look to make a bit of a statement for a full four quarters, the offense should be balanced, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Yes, Arizona State is better than everyone believes, but Oklahoma State is going to keep pushing through this season before being a big player in the Big 12 title chase again.

Jones and Valladay will have their moments, but the passing game won’t be there to make up for the long stretches when they’re held in check. The Cowboy offense won’t roll like it did in the first half against Central Michigan, but it’ll control the tempo.

Don’t expect a ton of points, but the Cowboys won’t have to sweat too much.

Arizona State vs Northern Arizona Game Preview

Why Northern Arizona Will Win

The Lumberjacks know how to run the ball, and they’ll try to slow things down a bit by grinding it out.

6-2, 225-pound Kevin Daniels ran for 1,146 yards and seven touchdowns last year with a good burst to go along with his power. He and eight other starters return to an effective attack that might not connect on the deep ball, but should have a little success against an ASU defense that’s missing key parts on the line.

On the other side, the Northern Arizona defense might have its problems, but it takes the ball away in bunches. It has to force a slew of mistakes against an ASU offense that’s all but starting over. However …

Why Arizona State Will Win

Northern Arizona’s defense is going to get worked over.

Yes, ASU’s Jayden Daniels is now at LSU, but the quarterback situation will be fine with Florida transfer Emory Jones and Alabama transfer Paul Tyson good enough to exploit the mediocre secondary.

NAU might have a running game, but Arizona State’s will be better. Wyoming transfer Xazavian Valladay should be in for a huge season, Jones – if he locks down the gig – is dangerous on the move, and there shouldn’t be much of a problem against a D that gave up 439 yards per game and now has to replace five starters.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Northern Arizona was able to shock Arizona last year, and it’s going to bring a whole lot of fight and effort – getting a win in this would make the season.

2022 Arizona State isn’t 2021 Arizona.

The Sun Devils will run for over 200 yards and control the clock throughout. NAU will have the ball for about 26 minutes, the offense won’t get enough out of the passing game, and it’ll be a good game for ASU to hit refresh.
