Arizona State vs Washington State Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

The passing game is still doing what it does.

It’s not the high-flying fun show you’d expect out of a Washington State offense, but even after the drama and the issues with the Nick Rolovich situation, the team was still able to do what it does in a close loss to BYU.

The O needs to do more, but it’ll get close to 250 yards through the air against the Arizona State defense, the defense is solid at forcing takeaways, and the entire system is build around staying close against just about anyone.

The defensive side has been good enough, allowing under 400 yards in four of the last five games. Arizona State is 0-2 against FBS teams when failing to get to 430, and 4-0 when it does.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Arizona State Will Win

The Sun Devils are still in the hunt for the Pac-12 title as long as it wins out and gets a wee bit of help. Now they’re rested after two weeks off following the rough performance in the loss to Utah.

For all of the steadiness and consistency, the Washington State defense can get hammered on by anyone who’s able to establish the ground game. The Cougars are 1-3 when allowing 200 rushing yards or more, and ASU has to at least be balanced. It has yet to have a 200 yard rushing/passing day, but get the ground attack working, and everything else with this team will follow.

There’s enough of a pass rush to be a bother for the short-range Wazzu passing game, and that all goes along with a defense that’s the best in the Pac-12. Washington State will hit its throws, but they might not go anywhere.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona State will get back on track.

The problem against Utah was defensively – the Utes were well balanced and moved the ball way too easily with the most yards gained against the Sun Devils all year. Washington State isn’t going to move the ball a lick.

Jayden Daniels and ASU’s offense will be more steady than explosive. It’ll get out to a good start and coast on a good day from the D.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arizona State vs Utah Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

Now it’s on.

The BYU loss will always be looming, but with all the craziness in the college football world, yeah, Arizona State is still one of those teams in the race for the College Football Playoff.

Go 12-1, win the Pac-12 Championship, get in … probably.

For this week, the defense has to bring its production on the road after doing a fantastic job of stuffing the Stanford running game last week and holding down the UCLA offense in the second half of the fun late night game a few weeks ago.

Utah hasn’t been consistent. It seems to have settled in – it’s coming off an inspired win over USC – but the running game isn’t it’s normally dominant self, the O is having a tough time on third downs, and for a program that’s been so great about control under Kyle Whittingham, holding the ball for 27 minutes a game isn’t okay.

But …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Utah Will Win

Now this is the Utah team we were all waiting for.

It lost a tough game against BYU, and it couldn’t push past San Diego State in a 33-31 loss. The ground game cranked it all up against Washington State, and QB Cameron Rising is coming off a terrific performance – hitting 79% of his passes for 306 yards and three scores – in the win over USC.

The team isn’t beating itself. It’s not getting hit with a ton of penalties, the pass rush is solid, and there aren’t enough turnovers to be a problem. On the flip side, Arizona State is getting hit with nine penalties a game.

ASU is playing well on the lines, but it’s not going to outshove the Utah defensive front. The Utes allowed under 100 rushing yards in the three wins, and gave up over 200 yards in the two losses …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not quite that simple when it comes to ASU. It’s going to be balanced, Jayden Daniels has been great, and the defense has been dominant for key stretches.

No, Arizona State doesn’t have to run for 200 yards to win, but this year, it has to at least get to 160ish and Daniels has to be great. The Utah pass rush will keep that from happening.

How to watch, listen or stream Colorado vs. Arizona State

Karl Dorrell’s Colorado Buffaloes are looking to turn things around when they enter the Arizona State inferno on Saturday night. The Buffaloes have won the last two meetings, but their offense has struggled in 2021. A win would put the Buffs back at .500 while a loss would drop them to 1-3 with USC looming next.

CU Buffs set for rebound opportunity against Arizona State

Colorado has an opportunity to turn the page in its Pac-12 opener at ASU

Last week’s 30-0 loss is now in the past as the Colorado Buffaloes have a clean slate when they travel down to Tempe for their Pac-12 opener. From everything we heard this week, the Buffs aren’t pointing any fingers and are simply focused on Arizona State.

“In the wake of obviously the disaster last week, I think out players’ attitudes and our efforts and the urgency about getting things past us and moving forward is pretty evident right now,” Karl Dorrell said.

As for the biggest question mark for Colorado—its offense—there won’t be any drastic changes this week according to Dorrell. The second-year head coach said he’ll be more present in the offensive room and provide more game preparation help. “We think we’re off to a good start,” Dorrell said on Monday.

Without getting too into the numbers, CU’s offense, particularly in the passing game, has been rough. The Buffs are averaging just 91 passing yards per game, by far the lowest in the Pac-12.  Oddly enough, Arizona State and junior QB Jayden Daniels hold the second-worst average at 213 yards a game. But at the same time, the Sun Devils’ rushing duo of Rachaad White and Daniyel Ngata has produced the most rushing yards in the conference and is averaging over 225 yards a game. It’s looking like any offense generated on Saturday by either team will be on the ground.

[lawrence-related id=628,609,559]

A big bright spot for Colorado last week was a linebacker group that had three members (Nate Landman, Quinn Perry and Guy Thomas) record at least 10 tackles. This trio and a hopefully healthy Na’im Rodman on the D-line will be the Buffs best chance at slowing down White and Ngata.

Another comforting fact is that Colorado has played well against Arizona State in recent years. Former CU QB Steven Montez led the Buffs to one-score victories in both 2018 and 2019. The 2020 rendition was canceled due to COVID-19.

Saturday will mark the Buffs’ latest kickoff time so far in 2021 with an 8:30 p.m. MST start in Tempe.

Getting to know the Sun Devils with ASU sports journalism student Dominic Stearn

Arizona State sports journalism student Dominic Stearn answers a few questions on the Sun Devils.

Both coming off disappointing losses, the 1-2 Colorado Buffaloes and 2-1 Arizona State Sun Devils kick off their Pac-12 schedules together this Saturday in Tempe. Colorado has had ASU’s number in recent years, but the Sun Devils hold an experienced QB in Jayden Daniels. We caught up with ASU sports journalism student Dominic Stearn to learn more about the Sun Devils.

Q: Are you concerned about the play of Jayden Daniels after the loss to BYU?

Stearn: Daniels was sharp to start the game, but things spiraled in the second quarter and the offense wasn’t able to recover. He was ready to lead a second half comeback, but penalties didn’t allow them to get in a rhythm. I’m not so concerned with Daniels, more the passing game as a whole.

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Q: Who is one X-factor to watch for the Sun Devils on Saturday?

Stearn: The receiving unit as a whole is the X-factor for the Sun Devils. There hasn’t been any consistency with the group, and it is limiting the potential of the offense.

Q: What is your prediction for the game?

Stearn: I think ASU figures out its problems and handles Colorado at home, winning by 14.

Q: How much does the BYU loss affect the Sun Devils and the future of Herm Edwards?

Stearn: Well it’s just one game, but it showcased the problems for the Sun Devils this year, undisciplined football. That is an issue that can be directly attributed to coaching, and given the current NCAA investigation on the program, if this discipline issue isn’t resolved, it could spell the end for Edwards. The talent on ASU is undeniable, it’s just about getting the most out of it.

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Q: The Sun Devils have a grueling schedule coming up with UCLA, USC and Utah over the next month. Are you concerned about this team going forward?

Stearn: Yes, but their problems are very fixable. We need to see them be fixed against Colorado before traveling to UCLA.

[lawrence-related id=572,531]

Q: The Buffs had a disappointing game against Minnesota but hung tough with Texas A&M a week before. Who is one CU player that you are concerned about for Saturday?

Stearn: Nate Landman, the Buffs leading tackler. The ASU defense has done a great job, but if Landman can slow down the ASU running attack, the other strength of the team at the moment, this could be a very close game.

2020 was a strange year for everyone so a free pass has to be given to everyone who had a rough year, but …

Wisconsin was supposed to be good enough to play for the Big Ten title. That didn’t happen – global pandemic things had a wee bit to do with that.

Penn State seemed like it had top ten talent, and then it had the worst start in the program’s history.

Michigan struggled, Virginia Tech wasn’t that great, Minnesota wasn’t special, Mississippi State didn’t break through, and LSU took a massive step back.

Last year we got it close to the pin, hitting Florida State, Minnesota, and Baylor. Give us a mulligan on USC because the schedule changed, and for what the piece is about, Georgia was right considering it didn’t play for or win the SEC Championship and didn’t get to the College Football Playoff.

No one’s saying these teams are going to be bad, but …

It’s all relative. Keep those three words in mind with each of the five teams on the list, because for all of them, anything but less an appearance in the respective conference championship game – at least – will be a disappointment.

Which Power Five teams will start the season with big expectations and will likely fall short?

2021 Power Five Possible Disappointments
Big Ten | Big 12Pac-12 | SEC

ACC: North Carolina Tar Heels

There isn’t any one team in the ACC that appears to be overvalued too much when it comes to the preseason win totals, so this is more about overall expectations.

North Carolina is going to be fantastic, but will it win the ACC Championship? Clemson still appears to be miles ahead of the rest of the conference

Will the Tar Heels win the Coastal Division and get to the ACC title game?

Across several board, the win total line is 10, but Mack Brown’s club has to go to Notre Dame, it starts out at Virginia Tech, ends with NC State, and has to deal with Pitt on the road and Miami at home.

2021 CFN North Carolina Preview

That’s not to say it won’t or can’t win any of all of those meetings, and it’s a huge help to not have Clemson on the regular season slate, but is there a defensive meltdown coming like the 44-41 loss to Virginia last year? Is there a brain-cramp like the 31-28 thriller of a defeat to Florida State?

This is when just about everything should be in place after a few years of great recruiting – along with the third year at the helm for QB Sam Howell – but again, the bar is set on ACC Championship appearance or bust.

Anything less than being the second-best team in the ACC – at least – and a ten-win season will be a disappointment.

By the way, North Carolina has one double-digit win season since 1997.

Arizona State College Football Preview 2021: Offense

This is when the offense needs to start working on a consistently explosive level. The Sun Devils led the Pac-12 in total and scoring offense – the 70-7 win over Arizona helped that – and now almost everyone is back. The skill guys are fantastic, and there’s enough depth and all-around talent to hang punch-for-punch with anyone on the schedule. It all starts with …

Jayden Daniels. The third-year starting quarterback needs to be more accurate and he has to be very, very careful on the move – he ran for 578 yards and seven touchdowns in his first two seasons, but the 6-3, 185-pounder doesn’t have the build to take a ton of deep shots. The talent is there, the decision-making and deep ball ability is there, and the supporting cast is there.

With the lone exception of Frank Darby, every other wide receiver and tight end who caught a pass last season is expected to be back, and the offense gets more help from the transfer portal with Bryan Thompson coming in from Utah.

There’s talent, size, and a whole lot of options to keep bombing away – including spring star Elijah Badger, who missed last year – but as the theme goes for this team, consistency is the key. It was a young group that should grow along with Daniels. Now …

The offensive line has to keep everyone upright. It did a great job last year for the Pac-12’s top rushing offense – again, a few big moments in a four-game season skews things – and it was solid in pass protection.

Four of the starting five on the O line is expected to be back and the runners are in place, too. Rachaad White led the team in rushing and receiving yards, Chip Trayanum is a 230-pound blaster, and Daniyel Ngata is a dangerous young quick back. Daniels can run, too.

Arizona State Sun Devils Football Schedule Analysis: The Sun Devils miss Oregon. Start with that, and the schedule is already not that bad. If they can get by BYU on the road, the non-conference slate is no big deal with Southern Utah and UNLV nice tune-ups for the rest of the slate.

Along with not getting Oregon from the North, missing Cal isn’t all that bad. There’s a back-to-back run late with trips to Washington and Oregon State, but that’s sandwiched in between home games against USC and Arizona. Going to UCLA and Utah, though, will be an issue in the South run.

A top Badger target commits to Arizona State

The Badgers lost out on a top 2021 target when CB Robert Regan committed to Arizona State this morning.

The California native will head to the Valley of the Sun to play for Herm Edwards and crew. It was all love from the Wisconsin 2021 family even as the Badgers missed out on a top target. 2021 Wisconsin commit T.J. Bollers chimed in to show his support for Regan’s decision.

Florida native Ricardo Hallman is currently the only Wisconsin CB commit in the class of 2021.

Running back Gabe Ervin has released his top-five schools.

Out of Buford, Georgia, Ervin released a top-five of Georgia, Duke, Arizona State, Nebraska and Michigan State.

Considered a 3-star back in the class of 2021 by 247Sports, Ervin ranks as the nation’s No. 734 overall player, No. 54 running back and as the No. 61 ranked player in Georgia. (247Sports Composite)
