Bellator is back in Southern California this week with a heavyweight tilt at the top of the lineup.

Bellator 293 takes place Friday at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, Calif. The main card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=420030791 tag=420038910]

In the main event, [autotag]Marcelo Golm[/autotag] (10-3 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) takes on [autotag]Daniel James[/autotag] (14-6-1 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) at heavyweight. Golm is a -150 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on James is +120. Our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers are divided and have Golm with the slimmest possible lead at 6-5 in the picks.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Leah McCourt[/autotag] (7-2 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) meets former UFC title challenger [autotag]Cat Zingano[/autotag] (13-4 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) in a women’s featherweight bout that could determine the next title challenger. Zingano is the biggest favorite on the main card at -450, but she doesn’t have a shutout. One of our pickers is taking McCourt in an upset.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Aaron Jeffery[/autotag] (13-3 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) takes on former middleweight title challenger [autotag]John Salter[/autotag] (18-6 MMA, 8-3 BMMA). Jeffery is a -420 favorite, but he has just a narrow 6-5 lead in the picks from our staff members.

Our first of two unanimous picks is [autotag]Archie Colgan[/autotag] (6-0 MMA, 3-0 BMMA), who nearly is a 3-1 favorite in his lightweight bout against [autotag]Justin Montalvo[/autotag] (5-0 MMA, 2-0 BMMA). Their fight was elevated to the main card Friday.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Sullivan Cauley[/autotag] (5-0 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) is our second unanimous pick in his light heavyweight bout against [autotag]Luke Trainer[/autotag] (6-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA). Cauley is a 2-1 favorite at the betting window.

In the MMA Junkie consensus picks, James (52 percent), Zingano (72 percent), Jeffery (65 percent), Colgan (77 percent) and Cauley (72 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Check out the results from the official Bellator 293 fighter weigh-ins in Temecula, Calif.

Official weigh-ins for Bellator 293 took place Thursday at the Bellator host hotel.

The nearby Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, Calif., hosts Friday’s event, which has a main card on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

Among those who weighed in were [autotag]Marcelo Golm[/autotag] (10-3 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) and [autotag]Daniel James[/autotag] (14-6-1 MMA, 2-0 BMMA), who meet in the heavyweight main event, and [autotag]Leah McCourt[/autotag] (7-2 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) and [autotag]Cat Zingano[/autotag] (13-4 MMA, 3-0 BMMA), who fight in the women’s featherweight contenders bout co-feature.

A welterweight fight between [autotag]Rustam Khabilov[/autotag] (24-4 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) and [autotag]Jaleel Willis[/autotag] (16-4 MMA, 4-2 BMMA) was canceled minutes before weigh-ins. Willis’ manager Matt Weibel, of First Round Management, tweeted the cancellation was due to an issue on Khabilov’s side.

As a result of the cancellation, [autotag]Archie Colgan[/autotag] (6-0 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) vs. [autotag]Justin Montalvo[/autotag] (5-0 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) has been elevated to the main card.

Archie Colgan planning to stay at lightweight despite tough cut ahead of Bellator 288

Archie Colgan came to his post-fight news conference, but had to rewatch his fight before he stepped to the podium.

CHICAGO – [autotag]Archie Colgan[/autotag] came to his post-fight news conference, but had to rewatch his fight before he stepped to the podium.

It happened fast enough that he hardly remembered what happened. Colgan (5-0 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) stopped Jesse Hannam (2-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) with a first-round knockout in just 50 seconds. It was his first fight at lightweight after fighting at welterweight to open his MMA career.

He said he isn’t ready to turn around that quickly, given the harder weight cut now, but said he’s comfortable moving ahead at lightweight after his big performance on the Bellator 288 preliminary card at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.

Check out Colgan’s full post-fight news conference in the video above.

Archie Colgan happy to show off hands, but doesn’t want to get away from wrestling at Bellator 288

“I mean ultimately outside of that last fight, I don’t want to get away from wrestling. I don’t want to run from that.”

CHICAGO – [autotag]Archie Colgan[/autotag] is showing improved striking, but still plans on sticking to his bread and butter.

Colgan (5-0 MMA, 2-0 BMMA), who comes from a wrestling background, mostly displayed his striking in his last outing when he knocked out Bryan Nuro at Bellator 283 in July.

But that doesn’t mean Colgan has forgotten his roots. The training partner of the likes of former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and Justin Gaethje doesn’t plan on straying away from his wrestling when he faces Jesse Hannam (2-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) in Friday’s Bellator 288 event.

[lawrence-related id=2597587,2597557]

“I might, we’ll see how I’m feeling,” Colgan told reporters at Wednesday’s media day. “I might throw a little takedown in there, just because you asked (laughs). No, I mean ultimately outside of that last fight, I don’t want to get away from wrestling. I don’t want to run from that.

“I love wrestling, it’s the best skillet. So I definitely want to wrestle, but we’ll see how the exchanges start because every round starts on the feet. We’ll see how those exchanges end and if he can take what I dish out, eventually we will go to the ground yeah.”

Bellator 288 takes place Friday at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. The main card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

Check out Colagan’s full media day interview in the video above.

Bellator 283 medical suspensions: Mukhamed Berkhamov out indefinitely after Lorenz Larkin no contest

Check out which fighters are facing indefinite suspensions as a result of Friday’s fights in Tacoma, Wash.

Belaltor 283 took place Friday at Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Wash. and featured 12 bouts of MMA action.

Atop the card, [autotag]Jason Jackson[/autotag] defeated former welterweight champion [autotag]Douglas Lima[/autotag] by unanimous decision. Also, RIZIN tournament champion [autotag]Tofiq Musayev[/autotag] defeated [autotag]Sidney Outlaw[/autotag] by first-round knockout, and [autotag]Usman Nurmagomedov[/autotag] quickly tapped [autotag]Chris Gonzalez[/autotag] with a first-round guillotine choke.

As a result of injuries sustained in the bout, each fighter on the card received a medical suspension from the Washington State Department of Licensing. MMA Junkie acquired the list from the commissioning body Tuesday. The list included suspension durations but not medical specifics.

Two fighters received indefinite suspensions, including [autotag]Mukhamed Berkhamov[/autotag], who fought in a no contest against [autotag]Lorenz Larkin[/autotag]. The fight was waved off after Larkin unintentionally struck Berkhamov in the back of the head. While Berkhamov said he was dizzy and that’s ultimately why the bout was called, Larkin claimed after the fight his opponent was in the doctor’s room with a knee injury.

[autotag]Roman Faraldo[/autotag], who knocked out [autotag]Luis Iniguez[/autotag], also was handed an indefinite suspension. Faraldo told reporters post-fight he broke his hand on the knockout blow.

Scroll below to see the medical suspensions handed out to each fighter. It’s important to note fighters can return to competition sooner than the allotted suspension if they are cleared by a doctor.

Bellator 283 salaries: Jason Jackson pockets $191,000 for win over Douglas Lima

Four fighters walked away with six-figure paydays as a result of Friday’s card in Tacoma, Wash.

Bellator 283 took place Friday at Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Wash. and featured 12 bouts including two potential title eliminator fights.

Atop the card, [autotag]Jason Jackson[/autotag] defeated [autotag]Douglas Lima[/autotag] in a dominant, five-round unanimous decision. The two main event participants were two of four fighters who pocketed six-figure disclosed purses from the event, according to a list MMA Junkie acquired Tuesday from the Washington State Department of Licensing, the commissioning body that oversaw the card.

Jackson pocketed a total of $191,000 for his win over former champion Lima, who took home a flat payout of $100,000. [autotag]Usman Nurmagomedov[/autotag] ($100,000) and [autotag]Lorenz Larkin[/autotag] ($125,000) were the other two fighters to hit the six-figure mark.

Bellator 283 video: Kamaru Usman protege Archie Colgan blasts Bryan Nuro with overhand right, scores knockout

Despite his wrestling roots, Archie Colgan showed off his striking prowess at Bellator 283.

[autotag]Archie Colgan[/autotag] trains with some of the best fighters in the world – and it showed at Bellator 283.

In the preliminary card opener, Colgan (5-0 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) put a beating on tough gritty opponent [autotag]Bryan Nuro[/autotag] (8-5 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) and won by TKO at 1:15 of Round 3.

Bellator 283 took place Friday at Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Wash.

Colgan, a training partner of the likes of Kamaru Usman and Justin Gaethje, showed a well-rounded attack in the two-plus rounds prior to the finish. A wrestler in roots, Colgan showed off his striking for the majority of the fight. Outside of a head kick in Round 2, Nuro struggled to muster much offense.

In Round 3, Colgan dumped Nuro to the canvas. From there, he swarmed with punches and ground-and-pound. Nuro rose up but the swarm didn’t stop. As Nuro retreated to the cage, Colgan cranked him with a big overhand right that ended the fight.

Colgan turned 27 the same day as his first Bellator victory. The bout was the first of his promotional tenure while on a multifight deal. He competed in a one-off in August 2021 when he slammed and finished Ben Simmons at Bellator 265.

The up-to-the-minute Bellator 283 results include:

  • Archie Colgan def. Bryan Nuro via TKO (punches) – Round 3, 1:50
