Three things we learned from UNC vs Florida A&M

After a slow start, UNC kept the pressure to a dominating finish. We take a look at three things we learned from the season opener.

The UNC football program took care of business Saturday night, beating Florida A&M 56-24.

The Tar Heels had a sluggish start on the defensive end, and luckily their offense did not miss a beat dominating in the passing and running game for most of the night. [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag] had an impressive debut, and UNC fans got a good look at their freshman running back duo of Omarion Hampton and George Pettaway.

UNC did make solid adjustments at halftime, holding FAMU to just 10 points in the second half while scoring 28 of their own. They also improved their rushing attack at the half, rushing in for two scores versus the zero in the first two quarters.

This game was the ideal start of the season for UNC as their journey only gets tougher with Appalachian State and Notre Dame games scheduled within the next three weeks.

Now with UNC officially in the win column, we look at three things we learned from the UNC vs. FAMU game.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are underdogs against Appalachian State

Advice and Prediction

This game is no easy task for UNC. However, if they can keep the offense going and make some adjustments on defense, coming out on top while covering the total points should be in the cards.

If I were to bet, I’d lean towards the over in the game and with UNC being underdogs that’s not a terrible bet at -110 odds either.

Rookie linebacker D’Marco Jackson placed on Saints injured reserve

Rookie linebacker D’Marco Jackson placed on Saints injured reserve, taking one of their 2022 draft picks out of play:

This is tough. New Orleans Saints linebacker D’Marco Jackson’s season ended on Tuesday when he was placed on injured reserve, having missed the previous five practice sessions at training camp with an undisclosed injury. The 24-year old’s rookie season is over before it could really get started. News of Jackson’s loss was reported on Tuesday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire.

It’s unfortunate, but injuries are part of the game, and we’ll be pulling for Jackson to bounce back next summer. He’ll essentially take a redshirt season and learn everything he can in meetings while getting his body right and return to compete in 2023.

Initially drafted in the fifth round this year out of Appalachian State, Jackson was in the mix to back up Demario Davis at the middle linebacker spot, along with veterans like Andrew Dowell, Eric Wilson, and Zack Baun. Several undrafted rookies, Nephi Sewell (Utah) and Isaiah Pryor (Notre Dame) are also fighting for roster spots behind Pete Werner and Kaden Elliss.

The Saints also re-signed linebacker Chase Hansen, who has spent time on their practice squad in the past, as a corresponding move to Kiko Alonso’s retirement prior to Jackson’s injury but they could look to add another free agent to the group for more depth. Here’s to his full and quick recovery.

Saints draft LB D’Marco Jackson at Round 5, No. 161

Saints draft Appalachian State linebacker D’Marco Jackson, the 2021 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year, at Round 5, No. 161:

It took a while to wait between their last pick in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft and their next selection in the fifth frame, but we now know the next member of the New Orleans Saints: Appalachian State linebacker D’Marco Jackson.

Jackson started 32 of the 53 games he played and was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year after his 120-tackle campaign in 2021. He participated in the Reese’s Senior Bowl and posted a Relative Athletic Score of 8.29 while weighing in at 6-foot-0 and 233 pounds, so he fits New Orleans’ type.

Look for him to push for snaps on special teams and maybe work his way into the rotation on defense eventually. Demario Davis isn’t getting any younger so it’s smart of the Saints to start looking for contingency plans should he follow Malcolm Jenkins into retirement in the next few years. Jackson is a great run defender as an inside linebacker and has the tools to develop into a nice asset down the line.

College Football Rankings, Season Predictions: Sun Belt Spring Version 2022

Sun Belt spring football rankings and predictions with best and worst case scenarios for every team

Sun Belt college football rankings and predictions with the realistic best and worst case records and quick analysis – the 2022 spring version.

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot bigger, cooler, and more interesting with a shocking expansion that should take the conference up another level.

FCS powerhouse James Madison gets to join in right away, and Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss were able to leave Conference USA and get in for the 2022 football season.

Here’s the problem – several Sun Belt programs that made strides last year are going to have tougher schedules to deal with. Several teams should be better, but might not have the results to show it.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

2022 College Football Schedules By Teams: All 131 Schools

Tennessee State’s all-time records against FBS programs

Get to know the Irish’s 2023 home opener opponent a bit.

Notre Dame has announced that its 2023 home opener will be played against Tennessee State, a Historically Black College and University. On the surface, it’s a great opportunity for a lesser-known program to receive national exposure. However, it also will be the first time the Irish have played a Football Championship Subdivision opponent. The reaction to this news within the fan base mostly has been lukewarm at best and outright negative at worst.

Notre Dame presently is the only Football Bowl Subdivision opponent the Tigers have scheduled for the future. That makes the decision either more of a headscratcher from the Irish’s point of view or it merely makes the Irish an outlier. Either way, the Tigers don’t get to play FBS schools very much, so you better believe they will be hyped for the opportunity. In the spirit of that, let’s take a look at how they have done against teams from college football’s top level:

Lions meet with Appalachian State DT Demetrius Taylor

The Detroit Lions meet with Appalachian State DT Demetrius Taylor at the Miami Hurricanes pro day

The Lions have paid a little more attention than normal to a defensive tackle prospect in advance of the 2022 NFL draft. Per Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network and verified by another source at the pro day, the Lions met with Appalachian State DT Demetrius Taylor after the Miami Hurricanes pro day.

Taylor is a Miami native and appeared at the pro day to work out with several Hurricanes prospects, a group that includes late-round WR Charleston Rambo and S Bubba Bolden

Taylor is generally projected as a late-round pick or potential priority free agent after the draft. The 6-1, 290-pounder was a 3-time first-team All-Sun Belt performer with 25 career sacks for the Mountaineers. Taylor had a decent workout:

Because it happened at a pro day workout, the meeting does not count as one of the Lions’ 30 pre-draft visits.

Former Clemson QB and transfer journeyman Chase Brice played his final game of the season today, leading his Appalachian State Mountaineers against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Despite a great game from Brice, who finished with 317 yards through the air and 3 TDs, his team ended up getting blown out 59-38. Brice went down early in the 4th quarter with an injury and did not return.

With his 300-yard performance, Brice broke the record for most passing yards in a season for an App State QB.

Most Clemson fans remember Brice for his massive 4th quarter comeback win over Syracuse in 2018, filling in for an injured Trevor Lawrence — including a clutch 4th-and-6 conversion that kept the game-wining drive alive. It was a win that was crucial for a Tiger team that ended up winning the national title.

Brice plans to return to App State for the 2022 season.
