Five Ohio State players named to preseason AP All-American team

Five Buckeyes were honored as 2023 preseason AP first-team All-Americans. #GoBucks

Believe it or not, we’ll have some real, live, college football at the end of this week. Yes, you can rejoice and come out of hibernation because the best time of the year is back.

But before we get to the pigskin flying on your television set, the Associated Press released its preseason All-American teams on Monday, and as you would expect, there’s a little scarlet and gray flair to it. In fact, five Ohio State players made either the first or second-team, which ties Georgia across both teams.

You can probably guess one or two of the Buckeyes that made the AP’s list, but maybe you’ll be surprised by one or two. Either way, here’s the five representatives for Ohio State on the preseason AP All-American teams for 2023.

First Up … AP first-team preseason All-Americans

Notre Dame’s Olivia Miles, Sonia Citron named All-Americans

Congratulations to the amazing Irish backcourt.

Notre Dame was one of the best teams in the country this season, and now, it’s getting honors reflective of that. There is no greater honor for a college basketball player then the All-American Team named by the Associated Press. The Irish can have double the celebration for that this year as two of there own were named to the team. [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag] made the second team, and [autotag]Sonia Citron[/autotag] was named an honorable mention.

We could go over everything they’ve done this season to justify being named to the team, but Irish fans know already. The team isn’t anywhere near as good without them, and the hope is that both will be available for the NCAA Tournament as Miles’ injury status remains uncertain. Citron can do some damage alone, but the team is almost unstoppable when she’s paired with Miles in the backcourt.

This is an improvement for Miles, who was an honorable mention in 2022. Hopefully for Citron, this is the first of three times being named to the team.

Alabama lands five players on AP All-American Team

Alabama football lands five players on the AP All-American team.

Despite not having the season most folks anticipated, the Alabama football team still landed five players on the Associated Press All-America team, which came out Monday morning.

Star outside linebacker Will Anderson Jr. was the lone first-team member of the three-deep team. Anderson is a consensus All-American.

Defensive back Brian Branch was selected to the second team while [autotag]Jahmyr Gibbs[/autotag], Kool-Aid McKinstry and [autotag]Jordan Battle[/autotag] landed on the third team.

Maybe the biggest surprise from the list is the absence of [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag]. The three quarterbacks selected were Caleb Williams of USC (first team), Max Duggan of TCU (second team) and Hendon Hooker of Tennessee (third team).

Below is the complete AP All-American Team:

No Notre Dame player selected as a 1st-team AP All-American

There is a silver lining here

The Irish have a long history of producing All-Americans, but this year no member of the Notre Dame team made the distinction of first-team AP All-American. Even though star safety Kyle Hamilton didn’t finish the season healthy, his impact was still felt as he was selected as a member of the second-team secondary.

There was another Irish player who got recognized was tight end Michael Mayer, who made the third-team. The pair of players made massive impacts for the Irish this fall. Unfortunately for the Irish, Hamilton has played his final snaps in the Blue and Gold as he has declared for the NFL Draft.

The good news is that Mayer still is just a sophomore, so his return next year is not in question. There should be some chatter that he could leave after his junior year, but that remains to be seen.

Four Notre Dame players named to Preseason All-American Team

See who made this year’s list for the Irish.

The Associated Press has released its Preseason All-American Team, and Notre Dame has four representatives on it. For most schools, one player making this team would be cause for celebration. However, Notre Dame is not “most schools”, and there are plenty of players expected to have fantastic seasons. While it’s obviously not a guarantee of success for the upcoming season, it shows how confident sportswriters are in a given player.

Here are those who represent the Irish on this prestigious team in 2021:
