Former Buffs running back Anthony Hankerson lands at Oregon State

Anthony Hankerson is headed to Corvallis

The Colorado Buffaloes have been active in the transfer portal, bringing in new commits left and right.

But, one departing player is running back Anthony Hankerson. The sophomore running back has now decided to stay in the Pac-12 (or Pac-2) and play for the Oregon State Beavers, as he announced in an X post on Wednesday.

Hankerson is the second Buffs player of this cycle to go to Oregon State, as he followed center Van Wells to Corvallis. After Jonathan Smith left for Michigan State, Trent Bray was promoted to OSU’s head job.

Oregon State and Washington State are the only two programs that aren’t planning to leave the Pac-12, and they have constructed a scheduling alliance with the Mountain West Conference.

Hankerson rushed for 319 yards and a touchdown this past season, sharing snaps with Dylan Edwards and Sy’veon Wilkerson.

Anthony Hankerson heading to the transfer portal after two years in Boulder

Colorado’s second-leading rusher from this past season is hitting the portal

When Deion Sanders was hired as the new head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes football program last year, most of the players he inherited from that 1-11 team headed elsewhere.

One of the players who stayed was running back Anthony Hankerson. But, Hankerson has now decided to enter the transfer portal and head elsewhere, per Hayes Fawcett of On3.

Hankerson had 274 yards with three scores on the ground in 2022 and then had 319 rushing yards with two scores this past season.

As Brian Howell of BuffZone noted, Hankerson’s departure leaves just three scholarship players left from that 2022 team:

Hankerson sent a message to On3 about his decision to enter the portal:

“First off I want to thank the man above for giving me the opportunity to play the game I love and for guiding me through this journey. I want to thank all the coaches and buffs I’ve met here during my time at CU. Thank you for all the relationships created here on and off the field.”

He will have two years of eligibility remaining and should find a decent number of offers with the talent he brings.

Top performers from Colorado’s 27-24 win at Arizona State

These five #cubuffs stepped up on Saturday evening at Arizona State

Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes got back in the win column on Saturday night with a 27-24 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe. The Buffs were on a two-game losing streak and were in desperate need of a win if they wanted to keep moving toward bowl eligibility.

The dramatic win might be just what the doctor ordered for Coach Prime and the Buffs as they have another winnable game next week against Stanford before heading into their bye after that.

With the Buffs now at 4-2 on the season, let’s look at some of the top performers from Colorado’s exciting win over the Sun Devils:

Five players who stepped up big for Colorado against USC

These five players stepped up big for the #cubuffs on Saturday

With Travis Hunter, Shilo Sanders and other key players out, several Buffs who hadn’t seen the field much this season, including a couple of true freshmen, stepped up when needed on Saturday against USC.

Yes, Colorado’s comeback attempt came up just short, but head coach Deion Sanders gained a good deal of confidence in multiple second and third-string players. The shorthanded Buffs even outscored the vaunted Trojans by 13 points in the second half thanks to their depth, something that many thought Colorado lacked heading into this season.

Below are five players who stepped up big for the Buffs on Saturday against USC:

Colorado football 2023 state of the position: Running back

How do you see Colorado’s offensive backfield shaking out in 2023?

The Colorado Buffaloes’ passing offense is getting a lot of love heading into the 2023 season. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders earned rave reviews for his play during spring ball and the wave of talented wide receivers have been social media darlings during offseason workouts.

So, Colorado will be a pass-first team next season, right? As the great Lee Corso often says, not so fast, my friend! Offensive coordinator Sean Lewis mentioned his Badger blood as a way of reminding the country that the Buffaloes are going to run the ball early and often.

Below is a breakdown of what Colorado’s RB room looks like with fall camp just weeks away:

Darian Hagan impressed by incoming freshmen backs Victor Venn and Anthony Hankerson

The ceiling is high for both Victor Venn and Anthony Hankerson

Darian Hagan, of course, has seen a lot of Colorado football. From his dominant playing career to his now second stint as running backs coach, the 1990 national champion’s words have some weight.

That’s why I was particularly intrigued when Hagan spoke very highly of his incoming freshmen backs. Hagan compared Victor Venn’s speed to Brian Calhoun and Hugh Charles and also found a few similarities between Anthony Hankerson and Eric Bieniemy.

“I’m putting a lot on him and I’m raising the bar, but he reminds me of a guy I played with from 88-91, Eric Bieniemy — the same stature, same physicality, they talk alike, they’re both alpha dogs and they’re hungry and they’re smart,” Hagan said. “They’re not going to be denied because of their stature.”
