Darian Hagan reportedly joining Sean Lewis’ staff at San Diego State

Darian Hagan is reportedly leaving Boulder to join Sean Lewis’ staff at San Diego State

After one year as an ambassador on Deion Sanders’ staff, Colorado football great Darian Hagan is getting back into coaching.

According to BuffZone, Hagan accepted an offer to join former Colorado offensive coordinator Sean Lewis at San Diego State as the Aztecs’ running backs coach. Hagan previously coached running backs at CU for a total of 12 seasons (2006-10 and 2016-22), mentoring standouts such as Phillip Lindsay, Rodney Stewart and Jarek Broussard.

From 1988-91, Hagan won a school-record 28 games as Colorado’s starting quarterback and helped the Buffaloes to their lone national championship in 1990. The 53-year-old Hagan was then elected to the CU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002.

Lewis, who was officially named the 19th head coach in SDSU football history last Wednesday, is also reportedly bringing on former Colorado O-line coach Bill O’Boyle to fill that same role.

Coach Prime on Sean Lewis leaving Colorado after one year: ‘I want them to elevate’

Coach Prime revealed that Sean Lewis leaving Colorado after one year was no surprise at all

Colorado’s coaching staff is changing quickly. Tight ends coach Tim Brewster resigned and took a job with Charlotte. Then, defensive ends coach Nick Williams left for a role at Syracuse.

And, offensive coordinator Sean Lewis left to become San Diego State’s new head football coach. In an interview with Brent Schrotenboer of USA TODAY Sports, CU head coach Deion Sanders spoke on Lewis leaving Boulder for the Aztecs:

“I get my wisdom from (Alabama) coach (Nick) Saban,” Sanders said. “Man, there’s not a year goes by that coach Saban don’t lose how many coaches? Because they elevate. That’s part of the game, and I want them to elevate… Coach Lewis came with the intention of having a great year and leaving. That’s what it was… (That’s) what the plan was, and the plan was executed. Nothing has transpired that has caught us off guard. Not one thing.”

The expectation all along was that Lewis, who was previously the head coach at Kent State, would get another head job, so this isn’t a surprise at all.

Former Wisconsin QB/TE lands new head coaching job

Former Wisconsin QB/TE lands new head coaching job

Former Wisconsin quarterback and tight end Sean Lewis was named the head coach at San Diego State earlier this week.

The former Badger had spent the year at Colorado with Deion Sanders, that after a highly-successful run at Kent State from 2018-2022.

Lewis played at Wisconsin from 2005-2007. ESPN says he recorded one career catch for seven yards. He joined the program in the class of 2004 as a three-star pro-style quarterback.

Lewis is now viewed as one of the up-and-coming coaches in the sport and one of the brightest offensive minds. It is widely accepted that Kent State is one of the worst jobs in the country, yet Lewis took it to the MAC Championship in 2021.

Now after a disastrous year in Colorado (which wasn’t his doing), Lewis has a new job.

Examining the top potential candidates to replace Sean Lewis as Colorado’s OC

Who would you like to see become Colorado’s next OC?

Colorado’s annual search for a new offensive coordinator is back on as Sean Lewis is reportedly expected to take San Diego State’s vacant head coaching job.

Lewis was at Colorado for one season but was removed from his playcalling duties in October. Now reportedly out of Boulder, some are also speculating that current Buffs offensive line coach Bill O’Boyle will follow Lewis to SDSU.

While there’s one early replacement candidate who’s standing out among the rest, it’s still worth examining all of the top potential OC options for Colorado and head coach Deion Sanders.

Below are five of the top early candidates to know:

Social media reacts to Sean Lewis leaving Colorado for San Diego State’s head job

What are your thoughts on Sean Lewis reportedly leaving for San Diego State’s head job?

From tight ends coach Tim Brewster to multiple decommits, the Colorado Buffaloes football program has already seen quite a few departures just days after the regular season ended.

Now, offensive coordinator Sean Lewis is expected to take San Diego State’s head coaching job, according to multiple reports. This was expected, though, after Lewis was stripped of his play-calling duties midway through the season.

Lewis’s expected departure is also likely why a number of offensive recruits have decommited from CU in recent days. The Buffs and head coach Deion Sanders are now searching for a replacement with Lewis headed to the Mountain West.

Social media was quick to react to Lewis leaving the Buffs for San Diego State:

REPORT: Sean Lewis leaving Colorado to become San Diego State’s new head coach

Sean Lewis is reportedly set to become San Diego State’s next head coach

The Sean Lewis era at Colorado was a short-lived one.

Per Brett McMurphy of the Action Network, San Diego State is expected to hire Lewis as its next head football coach. Lewis was previously Kent State’s head coach for five seasons (2018-22) before joining Deion Sanders’ staff at Colorado as an offensive coordinator last December.

However, midway through Lewis’s lone season in Boulder, his play-calling duties were handed over to Pat Shurmur. Since then, it has largely been expected that Lewis would leave the Buffs this offseason.

Led by a combination of Lewis and Shurmur, Colorado averaged 28.17 points per game in 2023 but was held back by poor offensive line play and a near-absent rushing attack.

Coach Prime’s search for Colorado’s next OC now begins. Byron Leftwich, who was Tom Brady’s OC with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is widely being considered as the top early candidate.

Lewis’s reported departure also comes two days after former CU tight ends coach Tim Brewster resigned from his role.

5 offensive coordinators the Oklahoma Sooners should consider to replace Jeff Lebby

5 offensive coordinator the Oklahoma Sooners could target to replace Jeff Lebby.

Mississippi State has hired Jeff Lebby to be their next head coach, leaving Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator position vacant. The Sooners have now begun the task of replacing Lebby, who helped Oklahoma’s offense finish No. 3 in the nation in scoring and No. 4 in total yards.

Offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners is a position that will be incredibly attractive to a number of coaches across college football.

Here are five names we think the Sooners should consider.

6 offensive coordinator candidates for Penn State

Six suggestions for Penn State’s new offensive coordinator.

After another offensive performance that lacked explosion and creativity, leading to a 24-15 loss to Michigan on Saturday, Penn State head coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] reiterated that the offense must get better.

Not even 24 hours after the defeat, it was announced by Penn State that offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach [autotag]Mike Yurcich[/autotag] was relieved of his duties early Sunday afternoon. Penn State confirmed that [autotag]Ja’Juan Seider[/autotag] and [autotag]Ty Howle[/autotag] will take over playcalling duties for the rest of the season.

The firing marks the third offensive coordinator that Franklin has fired in his ten years at State College. The next coordinator will be the sixth to coach under Franklin. Needless to say, this is a pivotal hire and could be Franklin’s last if this hire doesn’t pan out.

Let’s take a look at a very early shortlist (in no particular order) of possible candidates for the Nittany Lions.

Deion Sanders explains why he handed over offensive play-calling duties to Pat Shurmur

Deion Sanders opened up on his decision to give Pat Shurmur an increased role

Head coach Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes made some headlines prior to the Oregon State game when it was reported that Pat Shurmur would call offensive plays instead of coordinator Sean Lewis.

Shurmur has a lengthy resume, but the decision was made even more head-scratching when the Buffs struggled offensively against Oregon State on Saturday. The Buffs had just 238 yards of total offense and scored two touchdowns, both in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders was sacked four times in the game, and the rushing attack remained nonexistent.

All in all, it was another disappointing offensive performance. After the game, Coach Prime was asked about his decision to give Shurmur an increased role:

“We’re not going to demean Sean Lewis,” Deion Sanders said. “We’re not going to do that. We’re not going to take the tone. Sean is a good man. I think he’s a good playcaller. We just needed change at the time. We just needed to try something else at the time. And that’s what we did. I don’t look back on it. I don’t second-guess myself whatsoever because there’s more to it than what you may know. Let’s just trust the process.”

The offense has taken a giant step back, and this performance was not encouraging one bit. The Buffs have now lost three in a row and five of their last six games with the Arizona Wildcats now coming to town.

If the offense doesn’t improve soon, who knows what changes will happen next?

REPORT: Colorado analyst Pat Shurmur to assume offensive play-calling duties alongside Sean Lewis

Coach Prime reportedly made a major change to Colorado’s offensive staff

Following a rough showing for Colorado’s offense at UCLA, head coach Deion Sanders has reportedly made a major change to how things will operate this weekend.

Per Brett McMurphy of Action Network, analyst Pat Shurmur will be taking over play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Sean Lewis for the Buffs’ Saturday game against Oregon State. Shurmur was previously the Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator from 2020-21.

It’s fair to speculate that this move comes in response to Colorado’s near-absent run game. While the Buffaloes haven’t struggled to put up points, they rank dead-last in the Pac-12 with 78.6 rushing yards per game.

Brian Howell of BuffZone later confirmed that Shurmur and Lewis will serve as co-offensive coordinators.

Here’s how social media reacted to Shurmur’s sudden promotion:
