Where does OU stand in 247Sports’ team rankings after commitment of Jacobe Johnson?

Where do the Oklahoma Sooners stand in 247Sports team recruiting rankings after the commitment of four-star athlete Jacobe Johnson?

The Oklahoma Sooners added their 20th commitment in the 2023 recruiting cycle with the pledge of Mustang, Oklahoma’s Jacobe Johnson. Johnson is a top-100 four-star athlete and the fifth-highest-rated commitment in the 2023 cycle for the Sooners.

Though they still haven’t reached the top five in 247Sports team recruiting rankings, the Sooners are making headway toward finishing with the best recruiting class they’ve had in more than a decade.

And they’re not done. They’re in a great spot to land commitments from Makari Vickers, Anthony Evans and David Hicks.

Though nothing is settled until signing day, Brent Venables and his staff have done excellent work in their first full recruiting cycle with the Oklahoma Sooners.

Let’s look at where the Sooners stand in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings after Jacobe Johnson committed on Aug. 13.

Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class commitment tracker

Oklahoma Sooners 2023 commitment tracker

The Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class is coming together quite nicely after a strong June, July, and start to August.

Since June 1, the Sooners have added 15 commitments. They added nine commitments in July, with eight rated as four-star players. Also, in July, quarterback Jackson Arnold saw his stock rise after winning the Elite 11 MVP award, earning five-star status.

Their 2023 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings and No. 9 according to the On3 Consensus.

Oklahoma is still awaiting decisions from five-star defensive lineman [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag], four-star cornerback [autotag]Makari Vickers[/autotag], four-star athlete [autotag]Malachi Coleman[/autotag], and four-star wide receiver [autotag]Anthony Evans[/autotag]. With those dominoes still to fall, the Sooners could see their class push into the top three by national signing day.

While we await the next commitment to the 2023 recruiting class, here’s a look at who’s locked in and where they rank in the 247Sports composite and the On3 consensus rankings.

2023 4-star DE Colton Vasek commits to Oklahoma Sooners over Texas Longhorns

The Oklahoma Sooners continue to land top-tier defensive talent in Brent Venables’ first recruiting cycle with the commitment of 4-star DE Colton Vasek out of Austin, Texas.

After attending the Party at the Palace on Friday night, projections began to roll in for 2023 four-star defensive end [autotag]Colton Vasek[/autotag] to land with the Oklahoma Sooners. Those projections from each of the major recruiting services came to fruition Monday afternoon with the commitment of the Austin, Texas, native to the Sooners.

Vasek marks the second commitment for first-time defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis and the 19th commitment in the 2023 class for Brent Venables and the Sooners.

Vasek is a four-star player across the board and a top 200 prospect in the nation. He ranks as a top 50 player in the state of Texas and one of the 30-best edge prospects in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

From my scouting report over the weekend, here’s what I saw in Colton Vasek.

Vasek is a top-200 player in the 2023 recruiting cycle and has the size to be a dominant force off the edge for the Oklahoma Sooners. He has a great first step off the snap and shows fantastic play recognition. He does a great job setting the edge and shows fantastic effort in backside pursuit in the running game. As a pass rusher, he already displays several solid pass rush moves, and his length will help him gain an advantage on opposing offensive tackles at the next level.

After the commitment, the Sooners returned to No. 6 in the country ahead of Clemson but behind Notre Dame, Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama and Texas (for now).

With favorable projections incoming for five-star defensive lineman [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag], four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Jordan Renaud[/autotag], and four-star wide receiver [autotag]Anthony Evans[/autotag] over the weekend, the Sooners have a chance to climb even higher as the recruiting cycle plays out.

Oklahoma Sooners earn crystal ball for 2023 WR Anthony Evans

The Oklahoma Sooners received a pair of crystal ball predictions from 247Sports OUInsiders for 2023 wide receiver Anthony Evans.

Six “locks” were shared on Twitter by Oklahoma Football coaches during in the aftermath of the Party at the Palace. The locks have become well-known symbols of commitment since Brent Venables took over.

2023 WR Anthony Evans from Converse, Texas, is suspected to be one of those locks, although he was not in Norman this weekend.

After the recruiting mega-event, not one but two crystal balls from 247Sports predicted Evans to commit to Oklahoma over Georgia and Texas A&M.

While Evans is a bit skinny at 5-10, 155 lbs, his value doesn’t come with his size but his speed. Evans runs a sub-11 second 100-meter dash. Evans has competed in several track and field events in high school, including the 100-meter, 200-meter, long jump, and triple jump.

Originally an Arkansas commit, Evans decommited from Sam Pittman and the Razorbacks back in April and included Oklahoma in his final four earlier this month.

Evans is scheduled to make his decision on August 26.

Aggies make Top 4 for Wide receiver prospect, Anthony Evans

Aggies make Top 4 for Wide receiver prospect, Anthony Evans

Texas A&M looks to have made the final list of one of the top 50 wide receiver prospects in the 2023 recruiting class, Anthony Evans. on Wednesday, July 6, Evans, through an Instagram post, listed his final list of schools, which included Oklahoma, Penn State, Texas A&M, and Georgia, with August 26 looked to be the date for his announcement, all according to his Instagram post.

As I mentioned in my last update regarding Anthony Evans’s recruiting, he recently officially visited Oklahoma on June 3rd, Georgia on June 10th, and Texas A&M on June 17, and has yet to visit Penn State. The Aggies will have their hands full in battling the other three blue blood programs for Evans’s commitment but are either win good standing with the speedster with time to make their final recruiting push.

What Jimbo Fisher and company can hang their hats in the midst of building their 2023 recruiting class is their recent success in recruiting and developing some of the top-ranked wide receiver prospects in the country, going back as far as current Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter Mike Evans, to current Aggies and members of the 2022 recruiting class, Evan Stewart, and Chris Marshall.

Good luck to Anthony as he continues his recruiting journey, and we hope to see the Aggies trending up as Aug. 26 rapidly approaches.

4-star WR names top-four, sets commitment date

Georgia in the top-four for 4-star WR

On Wednesday, 2023 4-star wide receiver Anthony Evans announced his final schools and set a commitment date.

Evans posted on social media that his top-four schools include the Georgia Bulldogs, Oklahoma Sooners, Penn State Nittany Lions and Texas A&M Aggies.

He also set a commitment date of August 26.

From Converse, Texas, he ranks as the nation’s No. 336 overall player and No. 43 ranked wide receiver in the class of 2023, per 247Sports.

The 5-foot-10, 155 pound receiver also competes in track and field for Judson High School, where in the spring he ran a personal-best 10.27-second 100-meter dash.

Last season, Evans recorded 35 catches for 491 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Oklahoma inside the top 8 for 2023 3-star wide receiver Anthony Evans

The Oklahoma Sooners remain in the running for speedy 2023 WR Anthony Evans.

The Oklahoma Sooners rebounded from the loss of Ashton Cozart to the Oregon Ducks with a commitment from Brent Venables’ Camp standout Keyon Brown. Brown could be joined in the 2023 class by another wide receiver who included Oklahoma in his top 8 schools; Anthony Evans.

Evans released his top eight that included Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas A&M, Penn State, Arkansas, TCU, Houston, and UTSA. Evans was originally an Arkansas commitment, but reopened his recruiting as he began to get more attention from across the country.

National Recruiting Analyst for On3 Sam Spiegelman issued an On3 prediction in favor of the Oklahoma Sooners landing the speedy wide receiver from Converse, Texas after he made several visits to Norman.

Here’s what I wrote about him back in May.

Evans is a good route runner with excellent hands. Displays a strong ability to catch the ball away from his body with a good catch radius. Wins in contested situations down the field and on back-shoulder fades. He has a good feel for where to find space against zone coverage and makes himself a good target for the quarterback. He’s really good after the catch, with the speed to break away from defenders and the toughness to fight through tackles. He doesn’t go down on first contact and fights for extra yards. Played both in the slot and on the outside as a junior and does a good job manipulating defenders in his route concept. Converse used him often on jet sweep and reverse concepts and he showed good speed to win the edge and get upfield. Evans is a really good returner that can make plays in both the punt and kick return game. – Williams, SoonersWire

Back in May, Evans was a consensus three-star player. Since then, Evans has received four-star status from Rivals, the 247Sports Consensus, and the On3 Composite Rating.

With Marvin Mims draft-eligible in 2023, the Sooners could use a deep threat on the roster to go with the bigger receivers like Jalil Farooq, Nic Anderson, Jayden Gibson, and Keyon Brown. Landing the fast-rising Anthony Evans III would be a huge addition for Jeff Lebby’s offense.

Texas A&M Football Recruiting Profile: 2023 WR, Anthony Evans

Texas A&M Football Recruiting Profile: 2023 WR, Anthony Evans

Anthony Evans may be the most underrated wide receiver in the 2023 recruiting class. As a Top-50 wide receiver prospect in the country, and a Top-60 ranked player in Texas, Evans is going into his final senior season at Judson High School in Converse, Texas, with the hope of having his best statistical season yet as he continues to ponder his college choices.

Evans committed to Arkansas in November 2021, but after receiving several offers, Evans decommitted on April 23rd, and re-opened his recruitment. Now A&M is making its final push, and he officially made his way to College Station on June 17th.

In his first starting season during the 2020 campaign, Evans recorded 10 receptions for 270 yards and 2 touchdowns, maintaining a 27-yard average per reception in 7 games played. During his 2021 junior season, Evans played in 10 games, making 35 receptions for 491 yards and 3 touchdowns, while having a 14-yard average per reception. At the end of his 2021 season, Evans was selected Texas District 27-6A first-team, and began his steady ascendance up the recruiting ranks, continuing to this day. Evans also participates in track and field as a long jumper and 200-meter runner.

As a prospect, Anthony Evans currently stands at 6-0, 172lbs, and checks all the fundamental boxes with the ability to separate, catch and outsmart defenders, all vital in order to have success at the next level. On tape, Evans shows great twitchiness at the line of scrimmage, beautifully quick footwork, and soft hands, and instantly shows his track speed, getting on top of his defenders as soon as the ball is snapped. He also displays great catch radius and consistently utilizes his elite athleticism and length while making tough catches in press coverage.

His route running is pretty basic at this stage with a focus on go routes and post routes due to his overwhelming speed advantage, though does show a knack for finding holes in zone coverage and reading defenses pre-snap, and some run-after-catch ability while he navigates the open field. He’s also been used in the run game mainly in end-arounds, having great success while weaving his way through defenders, showing great balance and body control while displaying the 2nd gear in his speed arsenal.

Flipped commitment, no problem for the Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class

The Oklahoma Sooners are still in

Anymore de-commitments and commitment flips are as much a part of the fabric of college football recruiting as the actual commitments. They’ve become so commonplace that it barely moves the needle for fanbases. At least Oklahoma’s.

The Sooners lost a good player in Ashton Cozart. Of that, there’s no doubt. A four-star player and the only skill-position player they had committed to the 2023 class.

It’s never good to lose a four-star commitment, but it isn’t a cause for concern. The Sooners have a long way to go to get to get to the 2023 national signing day. We saw the type of recruiting class [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his staff were able to put together in just two months on the job after the [autotag]Lincoln Riley[/autotag] departure.

The 2022 recruiting class fell as low as No. 28 in 247Sports team recruiting rankings before Venables and his staff got to work. After national signing day, the Sooners had risen back into the top 10 to No. 8. Imagine what they’ll be able to do in the next nine months before 2023 national signing day.

The Sooners still have rising stars in [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], [autotag]Joshua Bates[/autotag], [autotag]Erik McCarty[/autotag], and [autotag]Kaleb Spencer[/autotag] in their recruiting class and the commitments will start rolling in this summer.

They’re in a great spot with wide receivers [autotag]Anthony Evans[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaquaize Pettaway[/autotag] in the 2023 class according to On3 Recruiting. Throw in all of the projections for dual-threat running back Dylan Edwards and Oklahoma will have some nice weapons coming to Norman in 2023. Throw in Javian Hester and LV Bunkley-Shelton and the Sooners have a couple of guys that will help this season and have several more years of eligibility down the road.

It’s still incredibly early in the recruiting cycle and the Sooners will be on the positive end of their own flips as well. They did in the 2022 recruiting class with Gracen Halton, R Mason Thomas, and Kevonte Henry, who they flipped from Power Five schools on national signing day.

Though they’re No. 37 in 247Sports team recruiting rankings, they, and the Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 38, aren’t concerned about where they stand months before the early signing period and nine months from national signing day.

Recruiting is a marathon and not a sprint. A lot will change over the next nine months and the Oklahoma Sooners will be right where they want to be when they cross the finish line.
