LSU women’s basketball home and away SEC opponents revealed for 2023-24

LSU coach Kim Mulkey and her team will be looking to repeat as national champions in the 2023-24 season.

LSU coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] and her team will be looking to repeat as national champions in the 2023-24 season, and they now have a better idea of what that gauntlet is going to look like.

The SEC announced the full slate of opponents — both home and away — for each women’s basketball team on Wednesday morning. For LSU, the slate is highlighted by a home matchup against South Carolina, which handed the Tigers one of only two losses suffered last season and the only one during the regular season.

LSU is among the most talented teams in the country again. Though it loses [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag], it brings back [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] and Flau’Jae Johnson while adding a pair of big-time transfers in [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] and [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag].

Here’s the full list of SEC opponents for the Tigers.

Hailey Van Lith says decision to come to LSU not about NIL, ‘ring chasing’

Van Lith said the decision was purely about finding where she would be happiest.

After winning its first national title this spring, the LSU women’s basketball team looks primed to repeat.

In addition to returning stars [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] and [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag], coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] landed two of the top transfers in the country in guard [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] and forward [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag], who come from Louisville and DePaul, respectively.

Van Lith in particular has faced some outside criticism for her decision to join the Tigers, which many have theorized was a calculated choice based on name, image and likeness money and the desire to win a championship.

In a recent interview with Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks, Van Lith refuted that idea.

Per On3:

“I think, you know, with NIL being a popular topic of conversation and even, like, the ring chasing rumors? I think, you know, those are logical things for people who don’t know the situation to attract to for an explanation as to why it happened,” Van Lith said. “But it was a decision made from the standpoint of, ‘Is Hailey happy?’. And, ‘Can Hailey attain happiness in this situation?’. That’s what I made my decision off of.”

LSU was the only school Van Lith officially visited, but it wasn’t the only one she was considering.

In the same interview, she said that she also considered South Carolina and Stanford but that her prior relationship with Mulkey ultimately made the difference.

Repeating as champions in college basketball is easier said than done, but with an absolutely loaded roster that features big-time additions like Van Lith, Mulkey’s team certainly looks like the early favorite.

LSU loses women’s basketball forward to transfer portal

The Tigers saw their first transfer departure from their championship team on Tuesday.

LSU women’s basketball coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] has made masterful use of the transfer portal this offseason, adding big-time players [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] and [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag].

On Tuesday, the Tigers suffered their first loss to the portal this offseason. Forward [autotag]Alisa Williams[/autotag] opted to transfer, according to a report from On3’s Matthew Brune.

The 6-foot-2 freshman from Denton, Texas, saw minimal action during her first season in Baton Rouge, appearing in 20 games — all off the bench — and averaging 2.9 minutes in those contests.

Her best performance by far came against Western Carolina on Nov. 13 when she scored 10 points in a 107-34 win. On the year, she averaged just 0.9 points and one rebound.

She’ll have three more years of eligibility at her next stop.

LSU’s Angel Reese named to Team USA for AmeriCup

Transfer addition Aneesah Morrow also received a camp invite and will compete for one of the four remaining spots.

LSU women’s basketball star [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] was one of eight players selected to join Team USA for the upcoming 2023 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, which is set to take place in León, Mexico, from July 1-9.

Training camp is set to begin on June 22 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with the first match in pool play coming against Venezuela on July 1. [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag], an All-American transfer addition for the Tigers from DePaul, received a camp invite and will compete for one of the four remaining spots.

For Reese, her selection was a long-time coming. After leading LSU to its first national championship in women’s basketball, setting the NCAA record for double-doubles in a season in the process, she’ll look to lead Team USA to its fifth AmeriCup win and first since 2021.

The college basketball world reacts to LSU’s addition of All-American transfer Aneesah Morrow

The Tigers completed their superteam on Friday.

An LSU women’s basketball team that was already the favorite to repeat as national champions in 2024 grew even better on Friday.

DePaul forward [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag] — a two-time All-American with the Blue Demons who was named the national Freshman of the Year in 2022 — committed to the Tigers. She was one of the best players available in the transfer portal.

Between Morrow and Louisville transfer [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag], a three-year starter with the Cardinals and fellow All-America selection, LSU coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] has landed arguably the two best portal players in the entire country.

With the Tigers looking like a dynasty in the making, the college basketball world was in awe on Friday.

LSU’s Kim Mulkey could be building college basketball’s next great dynasty after adding transfer Aneesah Morrow

The Tigers are the clear team to beat entering the 2023-24 season and beyond.

For better or for worse, women’s college basketball has always been a sport prone to dynasties.

This century, it has largely been UConn and legendary coach Geno Auriemma’s domain. The program has won 11 titles during his nearly 40-year tenure (10 of which have come since 2000) and made 14 consecutive Final Fours, a streak that only ended this spring.

There’s been a new challenger to the Huskies’ hegemony in recent years in Dawn Staley’s South Carolina program, which has won two titles since 2017 and is currently riding a three-year Final Four streak.

Now, there’s another claimant to the women’s college basketball throne, and it hails from the bayou.

Friday, defending national champion LSU secured a massive commitment from the transfer portal in DePaul All-American forward Aneesah Morrow. It’s the second major addition coach Kim Mulkey has brought in from the portal this offseason, alongside Louisville guard Hailey Van Lith.

LSU is the favorite to repeat as champions in 2024, and there’s a good reason for it: Mulkey could be building a dynasty in Baton Rouge to rival any in college sports.

Tigers athletics director Scott Woodward is known as a big-game hunter when it comes to hiring head coaches, landing Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M and Brian Kelly at LSU. But when the women’s basketball job came open in 2021, he was just as aggressive in finding a replacement. That search led him to the longtime head coach at Baylor.

It can’t be overstated how big of a deal it was to woo Mulkey — a Louisiana native whose son, Kramer Robertson, is a former LSU baseball star — away from Waco. She won three national titles during her 22-year run with the Bears and could have easily ridden out the rest of her career with the team, still going out as an all-time coach in the sport in her own right.

Instead, she has the chance to leave behind an even bigger legacy.

LSU hiring Mulkey in 2021 paid immediate dividends for a program that had missed three-straight NCAA tournaments before her arrival and was searching for its first Final Four appearance since reaching five straight from 2004-08.

The Tigers earned a No. 3 seed in March Madness her first year in the 2021-22 season, and though that team was bounced in the NCAA tournament second round, that was just a preview of what was to come. LSU went 28-2 during the regular season in 2022-23, earning a No. 3 seed once again. This time, however, things would end differently.

Aside from a three-point win over Utah in the Sweet 16, the Tigers weren’t even particularly challenged en route to winning the program’s first title (and Mulkey’s fourth overall). The team was led by tournament MVP Angel Reese, who set an NCAA record with 34 double-doubles on the season.

Reese, one of the sport’s most electric players on and off the court, is back along with star freshman guard Flau’Jae Johnson. In addition, the Tigers will reload with two of the most talented players in the portal in Van Lith, a three-year starter with the Cardinals, and Morrow, the national Freshman of the Year in 2022, after losing Alexis Morris and LaDazhia Williams to the WNBA draft.

Like Reese last offseason when she transferred in from Maryland, Morrow’s list of finalists included South Carolina, and she was planning a trip to Columbia this weekend. But also like Reese, she ultimately canceled that trip, spurning Staley to pledge with Mulkey and the Tigers.

To put it simply, an already opulent program just became even richer.

The Tigers are clearly the team to beat heading into the 2023-24 season, but even that doesn’t feel like we’re thinking big enough. The Tigers have all the ingredients to dominate this sport for years to come.

Mulkey has created an absolute machine in Baton Rouge, and as long as she’s running the show, everyone else in the country may be playing catch-up.

USC transfer target Aneesah Morrow commits to LSU and Kim Mulkey

This is a tough blow for USC, but hardly unexpected. Meanwhile, @LSUTigersWire has the national title favorite for 2024.

The USC women’s basketball program is trying to build a championship identity and a standard of elite performance. Head coach Lindsay Gottlieb and assistant coach Beth Burns are definitely moving in the right direction, but their project isn’t a quick fix. It will take time. The Trojans were reminded of that unsatisfying yet unavoidable reality on Friday.

Aneesah Morrow, one of the elite women’s basketball transfers still in the portal, committed to LSU. USC and South Carolina were the other finalists in the running, but Morrow chose Kim Mulkey and the reigning national champions.

LSU Wire has more on the story:

“If it wasn’t already readily apparent, it is now: Kim Mulkey is building an absolute machine at LSU,” Tyler Nettuno wrote.

“The Tigers women’s basketball team — which is already the odds-on favorite to repeat as national champions in 2024 — got even better on Friday as former DePaul forward Aneesah Morrow announced her commitment to LSU via the transfer portal.”

LSU is the clear-cut favorite to win the 2024 national title. USC can’t put itself in that conversation just yet. It will be interesting to see if the Trojans can land a high-value transfer piece. That player won’t be as good as Morrow or offer the same level of upside, but after missing out on Morrow, USC needs a Plan B to add some quality to its roster. UCLA and Utah are widely seen as the favorites to win the Pac-12 in women’s basketball next season. USC does need another notable addition to come closer to the Bruins and Utes.

LSU women’s basketball lands another elite transfer in DePaul’s Aneesah Morrow

Morrow joins an already loaded roster after registering back-to-back All-American seasons with the Blue Demons.

If it wasn’t already readily apparent, it is now: [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] is building an absolute machine at LSU.

The Tigers women’s basketball team — which is already the odds-on favorite to repeat as national champions in 2024 — got even better on Friday as former DePaul forward [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag] announced her commitment to LSU via the transfer portal.

Morrow was one of the best transfers available in the entire country alongside Louisville’s [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] (who also committed to LSU). She broke out as a freshman with the Blue Demons in 2021-22, being named the national Freshman of the Year by several outlets that season.

She also earned All-American honors in each of her first two seasons.

As a sophomore this past season, Morrow averaged 25.7 points, 12.2 rebounds and two assists. She started all 66 games she appeared in with DePaul over the past two seasons.

She narrowed her list of finalists down to USC and South Carolina. She visited the Trojans last weekend and was set to make a trip to Columbia this weekend, but her plans have now obviously changed.

With Morrow’s addition, Mulkey has now landed two proven transfers to help offset the losses of [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag] and [autotag]LaDazhia Williams[/autotag], who were selected in the WNBA draft.

Now, the rich are getting even richer as Van Lith and Morrow will join a team that includes returning stars [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] and [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag].

LSU women’s basketball hosting All-American transfer visitor

The Tigers are now in the mix for two of the top transfers in the country.

The LSU women’s basketball team captured the first national championship in program history this season, but coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] isn’t resting on her laurels.

The Tigers lost a couple of key pieces after the season, namely [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag] and [autotag]LaDazhia Williams[/autotag], but they bring back stars [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] and [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag], and they’ve been aggressive on the transfer portal market.

LSU has been a major player in the recruitment of Louisville guard [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag], and it will host another elite transfer on campus this weekend in DePaul forward [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag]. The news was first reported by On3’s Matthew Brune.

Morrow averaged 25.7 points and 12.2 rebounds for the Blue Demons this season, earning Third Team All-American honors for her efforts. The 6-foot-1 Chicago native has two remaining years of eligibility and ranks as either the No. 1 or No. 2 player in the portal, depending on the rankings.

If LSU could land either Van Lith or Morrow (let alone both) it would almost certainly enter the 2023-24 season as the clear favorite to repeat as champions.

Who is still in the transfer portal that might make sense for the Iowa Hawkeyes?

Fresh off a trip to the national title game, Iowa wants to retool. Here’s several transfer portal targets the Hawkeyes should consider.

What an offseason this has been for women’s college basketball.

After one of the greatest tournaments in history, the race is on for these teams to reach even bigger heights in 2023-24. A number of top players hit the portal this offseason, looking more like the football version of the transfer portal.

From established stars Hailey Van Lith and Aneesah Morrow to talented youngsters waiting for a breakout such as Lauren Betts, there’s something for everyone in the portal!

Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes, they haven’t brought in anyone yet even though some of the portal’s top players have made their way to greener pastures.

Just like one of the worst snubs in American Idol history Chris Daughtry said in his hit song “It’s Not Over,” it is definitely not over yet for the Hawkeyes. There are many talented players still looking for a new home to ply their trade. Plenty of potential Hawkeyes out there!

As we get ready to leave the month of April, here is an updated look at the crazy women’s college basketball transfer portal.
