LSU women’s basketball transfers Hailey Van Lith, Aneesah Morrow earn AP Preseason Honorable Mention honors

The Tigers are the favorite to repeat after bringing in a pair of highly touted transfers.

LSU’s women’s basketball team looks primed to repeat as national champions in 2023-24 despite losing a couple of key players from last year’s squad.

A major reason for that is the transfer portal class coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] brought in this offseason, which was headlined by a pair of All-Americans last season in guard [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] and forward [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag].

While neither was named a Preseason All-American by the Associated Press like [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], both were named to the AP’s Preseason Honorable Mention list on Tuesday.

Van Lith was the top transfer in the country after earning First Team All-ACC and All-American Honorable Mention honors with Louisville last season. Morrow comes from DePaul, where she had 53 double-doubles in 66 career games and was named the national Freshman of the Year in 2021-22.

With another absolutely stacked roster in Baton Rouge, this could be the start of a dynasty for Mulkey.

LSU rolled out the red carpet for big-time transfer addition Hailey Van Lith

LSU threw every card it had in Van Lith’s recruitment.

When star guard [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] hit the transfer portal, speculation connecting her to LSU began immediately.

Van Lith had a prior relationship with head coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] from her original recruitment process and LSU was in the market for a point guard with [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag] headed to the WNBA.

After a visit, Van Lith committed to LSU, and Mulkey added to her collection of stars.

Based on some social media posts, it’s obvious LSU rolled out the red carpet for the Louisville transfer. Not only did Van Lith check out the basketball program, but she met LSU’s gymnastics team fresh off a national title appearance.

Van Lith also met LSU’s president [autotag]William Tate IV[/autotag].

I’m sure it’s not the first time a recruit has met with the school president, but it’s not something you see all the time, either. LSU made a full-throttled effort throughout the university to land Van Lith, and it paid off.

LSU women’s basketball star Angel Reese reacts to addition of Louisville transfer Hailey Van Lith

The Tigers’ superstar seems thrilled about the big-time pickup.

LSU landed arguably the most coveted player in the women’s basketball transfer portal on Thursday by securing the commitment of Louisville star [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag].

A guard from Wenatchee, Washington, Van Lith was a first-team All-ACC selection in 2022-23. She averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists while leading the Cardinals to an Elite Eight appearance.

Now, she’s set to join defending champion LSU as a plug-and-play replacement for WNBA selection [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag]. Though the Tigers lost some players following the season, they’ve retooled with elite high school recruiting (and now, portal) signees.

[autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], who became a household name while leading the Tigers to a title, reacted on Twitter to Van Lith’s commitment on Thursday.

With the Tigers returning key pieces like Reese and [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag], a pickup like this should make LSU the clear favorite to repeat as champions under coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag], who just won her fourth overall title, in her third season.

BREAKING: LSU lands elite Louisville women’s basketball transfer Hailey Van Lith

Kim Mulkey continues to land big fish in the transfer portal.

LSU women’s basketball coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] got a monumental pickup via the transfer portal on Thursday when Louisville transfer guard [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] committed to the Tigers.

Van Lith, a First Team All-ACC selection and AP Honorable Mention All-American in 2022-23, announced her transfer decision via her Instagram account. She entered the portal as a “no-contact” transfer, meaning she could reach out to programs of interest but not the other way around.

An elite offensive player, the 5-foot-7 Wenatchee, Washington, native averaged 19.7 points for the Cardinals last season on top of 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists. Since she visited Baton Rouge earlier this month, things seemed to be trending toward the Tigers.

She’ll provide an instant replacement in the backcourt for [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag], who is heading to the WNBA after exhausting her eligibility. With her addition, LSU seems like the clear favorite to repeat next season as champions.

LSU women’s basketball hosting All-American transfer visitor

The Tigers are now in the mix for two of the top transfers in the country.

The LSU women’s basketball team captured the first national championship in program history this season, but coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] isn’t resting on her laurels.

The Tigers lost a couple of key pieces after the season, namely [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag] and [autotag]LaDazhia Williams[/autotag], but they bring back stars [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] and [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag], and they’ve been aggressive on the transfer portal market.

LSU has been a major player in the recruitment of Louisville guard [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag], and it will host another elite transfer on campus this weekend in DePaul forward [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag]. The news was first reported by On3’s Matthew Brune.

Morrow averaged 25.7 points and 12.2 rebounds for the Blue Demons this season, earning Third Team All-American honors for her efforts. The 6-foot-1 Chicago native has two remaining years of eligibility and ranks as either the No. 1 or No. 2 player in the portal, depending on the rankings.

If LSU could land either Van Lith or Morrow (let alone both) it would almost certainly enter the 2023-24 season as the clear favorite to repeat as champions.

Could star Louisville transfer Hailey Van Lith end up at LSU?

There’s speculation that Kim Mulkey could add one of the sport’s best players in the transfer portal.

One of the best guards in women’s college basketball is in the transfer portal: Louisville’s [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag].

Upon her appearance in the portal, LSU Twitter immediately began wondering if Van Lith could be on her way to Baton Rouge. While there aren’t any official reports tying Van Lith to LSU, some circumstances make the move look sensible.

For starters, LSU lost [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag], its top backcourt player and floor general. A strong backcourt is needed for success in the NCAA Tournament, and the addition of Van Lith would erase concerns created by the loss of Morris.

Van Lith and LSU head coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] are no strangers, either. Mulkey got to know Van Lith during the original recruitment phase.

According to reports, Van Lith is listed as a non-contact inside the portal, which means she might already have her destination in mind. It might also mean she’s not ready to kick her recruitment into high gear.

At this point, a lot of this remains speculation.

Van Lith averaged 19.7 points at Louisville last year and played nearly 37 minutes per night. Along with that, she totaled 3.2 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.

LSU is already in a good spot entering next year but the addition of Van Lith would cement the Tigers as the title favorites.
