Mack Brown ready for Andre Green ‘to step up’ this season for UNC

UNC football head coach Mack Brown is ready for Andre Green ‘to step up’ this year and is putting the pressure on him to contribute.

The UNC football program is preparing for its Spring Game this weekend and it’ll be the first time ‘this year’ that fans will have a chance to see the team and some of the new playmakers.

One of those players is wide receiver [autotag]Andre Greene[/autotag]. Greene, a true sophomore, played in four games as a freshman but didn’t see any consistent action until the Holiday Bowl.

That’s when Greene started to make some plays. He would have three catches for 26 yards and a touchdown in the bowl game.

Some of those playmaking abilities that Greene flashed at the end of the season  has UNC head coach Mack Brown wanting — and needing — more.

“We feel like it’s really important for us for Andre to step up,” Brown said. “Lonnie (Galloway) actually played him with the blues on Thursday some and got him out there with Drake (Maye) some to step up and go … He caught a touchdown pass, he made somebody miss a tackle and had a 20-yard run afterwards, so he really flashed some on Thursday for the first time.”

The Tar Heels are losing Josh Downs and Antoine Greene from last year — the top two pass catchers on the roster. So, Andre Greene’s emergence is needed.

Greene was a four-star prospect in the 2022 class. He has the ability and skill to be a dynamic playmaker for this UNC offense. And it’s time to step up, says Brown.

“I think sometimes if you’re not careful you get all these stars, and all these offers, you get all these recruits, and then the pressure and the standard is set so high that it’s hard for freshman to just come in and live up to that immediately,” Brown added, “ … we felt like it’s taken him to this point to be ready to go and feel confident and good about what we’re doing and how we’re doing it.”

The Tar Heels are coming off of a 9-5 season and ACC Coastal Division title. But, North Carolina did lose four games in a row to close the season.

Two UNC football players named among top 100 impact freshmen

Two UNC football players were named to the 247Sports impact freshmen list ahead of the 2022 college football season.

The UNC football program enters the 2022 season with some questions and a heck of a lot less pressure than they did in the 2021 offseason. Mack Brown and his staff have some things to figure out on both sides of the football but they are a team that could surprise some coming up.

If they want to take a step forward this year and surprise some, the impact of their recruiting class will be important.

On Thursday, two freshmen were named to 247Sports Top 100 list of impact freshmen going into the season. And both were on the defense side of the football.

Running back [autotag]George Pettaway[/autotag] cracked the list as the Tar Heels have a need at that position to be filled. They will likely take a committee approach but there is a chance Pettaway can have a big role:

With Ty Chandler off to the NFL, the Tar Heels have an opening at running back. And while Pettaway isn’t the favorite to fill that role – that job is British Brooks’ for now – he’s expected to be part of the rotation after a strong spring. In fact, Tar Heel OC Phil Longo said Pettaway brings something different to the offense, comparing him to Michael Carter: “Twitchy, change of direction slasher. He’s gonna spin and jump and do all that stuff. He’s a different kind of running back than some others.”

At the wide receiver position, the Tar Heels return Josh Downs and Antoine Green but there are some big question marks on the depth chart. With no clear number three option, freshman [autotag]Andre Greene[/autotag] has the chance to emerge as a go-to guy:

There are snaps to be earned at wide receiver for the Tar Heels with only two receivers returning who had more than 150 yards last season. Greene, a summer enrollee, is in position to snatch a lot of those reps. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Virginia native has a classic outside receiver’s build and has all the tools to be an immediate red zone threat.

It wouldn’t shock us to see either one or even both players to have a big impact right away. And if that happens, UNC should be in good shape with their offense.

What does LSU WR recruit Andre Greene bring to the table?

Class of 2022 wideout recruit Andre Greene will see time on both sides of ball in the upcoming season.

If there’s one thing the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t slowed the roll of for LSU football, it’s dominance in the recruiting game.

One player coach Ed Orgeron and the Tigers are keeping a close eye on is Class of 2022 wide receiver Andre Greene.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder out of St. Christopher’s High School in Richmond, Virginia currently holds over 40 offers from Division 1 programs — including LSU.

Greene knows he can bring a lot to a team in the future when he does go on to the college level, and recently told Glen West of Sports Illustrated that he’ll be playing both safety and corner as well moving forward — positions he didn’t have the chance to play in his freshman or sophomore year.

[lawrence-related id=10371]

He’s confident in his abilities as a wideout, and elaborated upon that in his interview with West.

“I would say I’m a very well rounded receiver that can do many different things,” he said. “I’m physical, strong, tall, athletic, fast, run goods routes, have strong hands and can jump high to get any ball that is near me. If you give me too much space, I can catch short balls and get a lot of yards after the catch. I have a lot of different favorite wide receivers and try to take a pieces of their game and add it to my game. And one thing my coach always tell me is he loves that I block for our backs or other receivers. During the offseason, I’ve just been working on everything I think I do good to make it even better.”

It will be interesting to see if the Tigers, who have been rich with talent at the receiver position, land Greene when his time to make a decision comes in the future.
