Jets shake things up at kicker for second-straight week

Jets shake things up at kicker for second-straight week

The New York Jets are going to have a new kicker… again.

The Jets (3-6) visit the Arizona Cardinals (5-4) for a must-win contest in Week 10.

Rookie Spencer Shrader is set to be the man in charge of the kicking duties for the Jets in the important outing, according to interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to New York’s kicker news.

Last week, Shrader and Riley Patterson were signed amid Greg Zuerlein struggling this season. Then Zuerlein ended up on injured reserve anyway and Patterson was named his replacement last week against the Houston Texans.

Now Shrader will get his chance as Patterson was released by the Jets on Friday.

In addition, there’s another new kicker coming to town. Anders Carlson signed to New York’s practice squad.

Carlson joins the Jets after being released by the San Francisco 49ers this week. Carlson was serving as Jake Moody’s replacement and now Moody is healthy.

This season, Carlson connected on all five of his attempts while subbing in.

Carlson was originally a sixth-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2023. He went 27-for-33 on field goals and missed five of his 39 extra points in his first season and then the Packers let him go.

While Patterson hit on all of his extra point attempts (no field goals) last week against the Texans, some point toward his less-than-stellar kickoff skills as a reason why a change has potentially come about.

Former Packers kicker lands on Jets practice squad

Former Green Bay Packers kicker Anders Carlson signed with the practice squad of the New York Jets on Friday, marking another chapter in Carlson’s whirlwind NFL journey.

Former Green Bay Packers kicker Anders Carlson signed with the practice squad of the New York Jets on Friday, marking another new chapter in Carlson’s whirlwind NFL journey.

The Jets also released veteran kicker Riley Patterson from the 53-man roster, likely opening the door for Carlson to be the team’s kicker on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Veteran kicker Greg Zuerlein is on injured reserve.

Carlson, a sixth-round pick of the Packers in 2023, spent two games with the San Francisco 49ers earlier this season. He made all five field goals (long of 55) and 3-of-4 extra points while with the 49ers.

The Packers released Carlson at final cuts in late August. He lost the kicker battle during the offseason and was replaced, at least initially, by Greg Joseph, but the Packers quickly changed directions and went with rookie Brayden Narveson to start the regular season. After five misses in six games, the Packers changed course again, releasing Narveson and signing veteran Brandon McManus, who has made 6-of-7 field goals (including two game-winners) and 6-of-6 extra points in three games.

As a rookie in 2023, Carlson made 27 of 33 field goals (81.8%) and 34 of 39 extra points (87.2%). He missed four field goals between 40-49 yards and two over 50 yards. During the postseason, Carlson missed a field goal in San Francisco and an extra point in Dallas — giving him 13 total misses in 19 total games.

In New York, Carlson will join quarterback Aaron Rodgers and receivers Davante Adams and Allen Lazard among the former Packers playing for the Jets in 2024.

49ers practice squad move good news for Jake Moody

The 49ers waived released kicker Anders Carlson from their practice squad.

After opening the practice window for players like Christian McCaffrey and Jon Feliciano early in the bye week, more reinforcements could be on the way for the San Francisco 49ers.

On Tuesday, the 49ers released kicker Anders Carlson from their practice squad. Carlson replaced Matthew Wright who replaced injured kicker Jake Moody.

In two games with the 49ers, the second-year kicker formerly of the Green Bay Packers made five field goals on five attempts and three extra points on four attempts. His lone miss with the 49ers came on an extra point.

Carlson’s release could be a positive sign for Moody’s return. On Monday, Moody was spotted back at practice with the 49ers, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.

In Week 5, Moody injured his ankle and missed the remainder of the game after attempting to make a tackle during kickoff coverage. Moody was later labeled with a high ankle sprain.

Mitch Wishnowsky of 49ers with astonishingly bad onside kick attempt

Mitch Wishnowsky with a brutal attempt at an onside kick

It would be easy to forgive Mitch Wishnowsky for the onside kick. After all, he is the punter for the San Francisco 49ers.

The game was out of hand with the Chiefs leading late, 28-18.

Still, Kyle Shanahan asked Wishnowsky to try an onside kick. You know make it go 10 yards and see if SF could recover.

And then this happened: M.Wishnowsky kicks onside 4 yards from SF 35 to SF 39, ball declared dead.

Now, onside kicks are reduced to the fourth quarter because of the genius that is the dynamic kickoff. But still …

49ers release WR from practice squad to make room for new K

The former Panthers pass catcher was signed to the 49ers practice squad before the start of the season.

The San Francisco 49ers will have their third kicker of the season step in on Sunday when they host the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch. Following Jake Moody’s ankle injury, his replacement, Matthew Wright suffered a shoulder injury on Thursday Night Football.

On Tuesday, the 49ers added kicker Anders Carlson to the practice squad along with veteran safety Adrian Amos. With Carlson and Amos set to join the practice squad, the 49ers released wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. from the practice squad.

49ers signing former Packers kicker Anders Carlson to practice squad

49ers signing former Packers kicker Anders Carlson to practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers are signing former Green Bay Packers kicker Anders Carlson to their practice squad, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Carlson, a free agent since being released during final roster cuts, is joining the 49ers as a potential option while starting kicker Jake Moody heals from a sprained ankle and backup Matthew Wright deals with a shoulder injury.

Drafted in the sixth round of 2023, Carlson was expected to be Green Bay’s long-term solution at kicker. As a rookie, he made 27 of 33 field goal attempts (81.8%), but his inconsistency—especially late in the season—was problematic. Carlson missed an NFL-high four extra points and struggled down the stretch, missing kicks in nine of his last 12 games, including a crucial miss in the Packers’ three-point Divisional Round loss to San Francisco.

Now, Carlson joins the team he helped send to last season’s NFC Championship Game.

With Moody sidelined in Week 6, Wright filled in and made all his kicks in the 49ers’ 36-24 win over the Seahawks. San Francisco is doing its due diligence on their kicking options while both Moody’s and Wright’s statuses remain uncertain. Carlson has a strong leg but struggled with consistency throughout his time in Green Bay.

This summer, he was given every chance to win the starting kicking job but never truly distinguished himself in a battle against veteran Greg Joseph. During training camp and the preseason, Carlson finished 62/76 (81.6%) on his kicks but missed his final attempt, a 32-yarder against the Baltimore Ravens in the finale. Meanwhile, Joseph went 60/76 (78.9%).

Although Carlson technically won the kicking competition over Joseph, the Packers released both kickers and instead claimed rookie Brayden Narveson after he was let go by the Tennessee Titans.

Unfortunately for Green Bay, Narveson has also struggled. He missed a 44-yarder against Arizona in Week 6, bringing his total to five missed field goals this season—more than any other kicker. He also ranks second-to-last among qualifying kickers in field goal percentage at 70.6.

Despite Narveson’s issues, head coach Matt LaFleur said Monday that they aren’t considering a kicker change yet. Green Bay could potentially sign Carlson off the 49ers’ practice squad if Narveson’s struggles persist, though for now, the team is trying to remain patient. But with each miss, that patience may be wearing thin.

Another injury forces 49ers to add another kicker

The 49ers are signing yet another kicker after another injury on a kickoff.

The San Francisco 49ers may need a third kicker in as many weeks after Jake Moody was hurt on a kickoff against the Cardinals in Week 5, and his replacement Matthew Wright was hurt on a kickoff against the Seahawks in Week 6.

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported the 49ers are adding former Packers kicker Anders Carlson to their practice squad.

Wright suffered a shoulder injury on the Seahawks final kick return Thursday night. The kicker stepped in to try and knock the kick returner out of bounds and dislocated his shoulder. Wright’s shoulder did pop back in according to head coach Kyle Shanahan and there’s a chance he could play in Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The chance Wright plays is why Carlson will join the 49ers’ practice squad instead of their active roster. Wright drilled all three of his field goal attempts and all three extra points in Seattle, so it stands to reason the club would want to move forward with him if possible.

Carlson spent last season with the Packers where he connected on 27 of 33 field goal attempts and 34 of 39 extra points. He was a perfect 20-for-20 on field goals inside of 40 yards, and just 7-of-13 on kicks beyond that range. His longest make came from 53 yards out.

There’s no word on a corresponding practice squad move. Matt Barrows of the Athletic reported neither Wright nor Moody were seen at Monday’s bonus practice.

The 49ers host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.

Bills host two kickers for workouts amidst Tyler Bass’ struggles

Bills host two kickers for workouts amidst Tyler Bass’ struggles

The Buffalo Bills held a workout for two free-agent kickers on Tuesday, Anders Carlson and Cade York, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

This comes directly after kicker Tyler Bass went 1-for-2 in Thursday night’s win over the Dolphins, in which he connected on a 43-yarder but missed badly on a 45-yarder.

The missed kick on Thursday night was nearly the same distance as the miss in the Divisional Round against the Chiefs (44 yards).

Many people are hung up on that one miss in the playoffs that essentially ended the season, but he took a noticeable step back for the totality of the 2023 season.

After making 82.4% of his kicks as a rookie, he hovered around the 87% mark in 2021 and 2022, which is good. But, in 2023 he regressed to 82.8%, and just 4-of-6 in the 40-49 range.

In last year’s wildcard round game against the Steelers, Bass went 1-for-3, including a blocked kick and a miss from only 29 yards out. In the 2023 postseason, he went 2-for-5 in total (40%).

The Bills thinking of competition for Bass makes a lot of sense considering the fact the Bills need consistency from their field goal kicker, especially in the postseason.

The factor that makes it tricky is Bass’ current contract. According to Spotrac, Bass is only in year one of a four-year extension signed last year. He was guaranteed over $9 million at signing and would have a dead cap hit of $7.38 million if he was cut this year.

As for the two brought in for workouts, both of them have just one full season in the NFL under their belt. Anders Carlson last played for the Packers in 2023, while Cade York was with the Browns in 2022. York started as the Commanders’ kicker this year but was let go after one game where he went 0-for-2.

Carlson made just 81.8% of his kicks and just 87.2% of extra points in 2023, while York made just 75% of his kicks in 2022.

Packers releasing kicker Anders Carlson at final cuts

The Packers will have a new kicker to start the 2024 season. The team is releasing Anders Carlson.

The Green Bay Packers are making a big change at kicker. The team will release kicker Anders Carlson during final cuts on Tuesday, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

After missing several big kicks to end his rookie season, Carlson labored through an inconsistent training camp, and he finished off his summer by missing a 32-yard field goal in the Packers’ preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens. It’s possible the final miss — on a chip shot field goal in perfect conditions inside Lambeau Field — sealed his fate.

As a rookie, Carlson made 27 of 33 field goals and 34 of 39 extra points during the regular season. He missed an extra point in the Packers’ playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys and a critical field goal in the fourth quarter of the Packers’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers a week later.

On kicks 40 yards or longer, Carlson was just 7-of-12. He led the NFL with five missed extra points. Overall, he missed 13 total kicks over 19 games.

The Packers drafted Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 draft.

After a difficult end to the season, the Packers signed veteran Greg Joseph and had three other kickers on the roster — proving they were committed to finding a better answer.

Carlson competed with Joseph throughout training camp. The Packers also have rookie Alex Hale, who was designated as the team’s international pathway player. It’s unclear if Joseph will win the kicking job or if the Packers will attempt to find a kicker after final cuts.

Packers kicker competition takes a turn entering Family Night

Greg Joseph, the veteran challenger, has created some distance in the competition against Anders Carlson at Packers kicker.

On Tuesday, the Green Bay Packers kicker competition got whittled down to two. On Thursday, some distance was created between the two remaining competitors.

This is no longer a three-way competition. Rookie James Turner was released on Tuesday.

During the final practice before Family Night, veteran challenger Greg Joseph finished a perfect 7-for-7 — with makes from 41, 42, 45, 47, 49, 51 and 58 yards. Incumbent Anders Carlson, meanwhile, went 4-for-7 — with misses from 45, 47 and 49. Like Joseph, Carlson made the 58-yarder to end the practice.

Through nine practices, Joseph has taken a noteworthy lead in the on-field competition.

Joseph, who was the Minnesota Vikings kicker over the last three seasons, is 29-of-31, or 93.5 percent.

Carlson, who started strong as a rookie but went through miserable ups and downs late, is 25-of-31, or 80.6 percent. Overall, Carlson made 81.8 percent of his field goals last season.

Any distance Joseph has made ahead of Carlson could be made up Saturday night at Lambeau Field. Kicking inside the stadium creates a far different environment than practice, and it can be assumed those kicks will be weighed more heavily in the kicking competition. Thousands of fans will be in attendance and the winds blow differently inside the bowl of Lambeau Field.

Can Joseph stay steady and accurate at Family Night? And can Carlson pull out a mini-funk? Both are important questions, given some of Joseph’s inconsistencies during his NFL career and the repetitiveness of Carlson’s funks to start his own career.

Anders Carlson: 25-for-31 (80.6%)
