RB promoted to 49ers active roster to complete series of roster moves

The #49ers on Thursday completed a series of roster moves that all tied together.

The 49ers on Thursday announced a couple of moves on the margins of their roster and practice squad. Running back Jeremy McNichols was promoted to the active roster, while defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth was officially added to the practice squad.

McNichols took the roster spot vacated by DT Kalia Davis, who was recently placed on IR with an ankle injury. The veteran RB was elevated from the practice squad for the team’s Week 14 game against the Seahawks, but he only contributed on six special teams snaps. He figures to continue helping on special teams when he’s active.

Stallworth’s addition was reported Thursday morning by his agent. The six-year veteran will give the 49ers some internal DT depth after injuries hit the position hard over the last couple weeks.

49ers to add DL depth with veteran DT Taylor Stallworth on practice squad

The #49ers are adding some internal depth on the D-line with injuries stacking up:

The 49ers are adding some internal depth to their defensive line. According to agent Brett Tessler, San Francisco is signing former Titans defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth to their practice squad. It’s unclear what the corresponding move is since the team hasn’t officially announced the addition.

Stallworth’s addition comes on the heels of second-year DT Kalia Davis going on IR with an ankle injury, leaving the 49ers woefully short on bodies at defensive tackle. Javon Hargrave and Arik Armstead are both battling injuries heading into Week 16, leaving only Javon Kinlaw and Kevin Givens as the two healthy players at that position.

Veteran DT T.Y. McGill also resides on the practice squad and figures to see time on the active roster if the team is still dealing with injuries come Monday.

Stallworth since debuting with the Saints in 2018 has played in 58 games with two starts. He’s seen time on the field with New Orleans, Indianapolis, Houston, Kansas City and Tennessee. In his 58 games he has 52 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 14 QB hits and 4.5 sacks.

49ers officially add CB Jason Verrett to practice squad

Jason Verrett is back with the 49ers.

The 49ers on Monday announced the addition of veteran cornerback Jason Verrett to their practice squad. They had one spot open on the practice squad after wide receiver Chris Conley was promoted Saturday.

Verrett has been a target of the 49ers for a few weeks and they finally came to a deal with the one-time Pro Bowler. There’s no immediate plan for him to join the active roster, and head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated their goal is to get him in the building and evaluate where he is physically before determining whether he’ll land a 53-man roster spot.

Injuries have derailed Verrett in virtually every season since he was selected by the Chargers in the first round of the 2014 draft. However, in 2015 when he played a career-high 14 games he was a Pro Bowler. And in 2020 when he played 13 games for the 49ers he played at a Pro Bowl level.

It’s unlikely the 49ers are relying heavily on Verrett given his injury history. He’s a strong, well-liked veteran presence though who should be helpful for San Francisco whether he suits up on a game day or not.

49ers add familiar face to practice squad

The #49ers made a small change on their practice squad.

The 49ers on Wednesday announced a small tweak to their practice squad.

They signed undrafted rookie defensive lineman Spencer Waege to their practice squad roster and released defensive end Austin Bryant.

Waege was signed by San Francisco after going undrafted this year and spent the offseason with the team before getting waived in late August. He’ll get an opportunity to develop as a versatile defensive lineman.

Bryant played two games for the 49ers on their active roster this season. He played in Weeks 1 and 5 and notched one tackle in 36 defensive snaps.

With additional depth at defensive end following the addition of Chase Young, San Francisco’s need for a veteran like Bryant on the practice squad evaporated. Instead they’ll roll with a younger player Waege who had a couple nice moments in camp and the preseason.

49ers practice squad moves: Familiar faces re-signed, 2 released

The #49ers did some practice squad stuff.

The 49ers on Wednesday announced a handful of practice squad moves that included the addition of two familiar faces.

Offensive lineman Ilm Manning and running back Jeremy McNichols were both signed to San Francisco’s practice squad. In a corresponding move the club released fullback Jack Colletto and defensive lineman Marlon Davidson.

Manning was an undrafted rookie signing by the 49ers this year. He put together a strong offseason at his natural left tackle position, but his long-term projection is along the interior. Arizona signed Manning after the 49ers let him go at final cuts, but he was released by the Cardinals and scooped up by San Francisco. They’ll likely have him working at guard given that his chances to stick around with the 49ers will be on the inside.

McNichols has been with the 49ers a couple times recently. They’re trying to ensure RB Christian McCaffrey stays healthy and RB Elijah Mitchell is dealing with a knee issue so McNichols gives them a little bit of in-house depth.

Cardinals add defensive back off 49ers practice squad

The #49ers lost a practice squad DB to the Cardinals.

The 49ers on Monday lost defensive back Qwuantrezz Knight to the Arizona Cardinals according to Matt Barrows of the Athletic.

It’s not a huge surprise the Cardinals poached the second-year undrafted free agent from San Francisco since they tried claiming him off waivers after final cuts.

Knight was a candidate to come up off the practice squad for San Francisco’s Week 2 game after they placed CB Samuel Womack on IR with a knee injury. Instead they elevated CB Tre Swilling.

The 49ers originally signed Knight as an undrafted rookie in 2022 out of UCLA. He spent all of last season on the practice squad, but now he should get an opportunity to debut in Arizona after they placed safety Budda Baker on IR.

49ers add kicker to practice squad as Jake Moody battles injury ahead of Week 1

The #49ers added a kicker to their practice squad while injury questions linger over rookie K Jake Moody.

The 49ers on Monday announced the addition of kicker Matthew Wright to their practice squad. In a corresponding move they released running back Brian Hill to keep the practice squad at its 17-player maximum.

Wright joins the club amid uncertainty about rookie kicker Jake Moody’s status heading into the season opener. Moody has been dealing with a quad strain since the final week of the preseason and the team doesn’t have a definitive timeline on when he’ll be able to play.

There’s hope that he’ll be active for the season opener in Pittsburgh, but Wright gives them in-house insurance in the event that Moody isn’t available.

Wright has played in 23 games across three seasons in the NFL with the Steelers, Jaguars and Chiefs. He’s connected on 40-of-46 field goal tries and 35-of-37 extra points. Wright is 23-of-24 as a pro from inside 40 yards. He spent the preseason with Carolina this year.

Moody’s status should be updated Wednesday when the team releases its first official practice participation report of the year.

49ers officially add former Packers CB to practice squad

The #49ers officially added a former Packers CB to their practice squad.

The 49ers on Thursday announced the addition of former Packers cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles to their practice squad to round out the 17-player unit. San Francisco announced 16 of the signings on Wednesday.

Jean-Charles was a fifth-round pick of the Packers in the 2021 draft and played in 20 games across his two seasons there. He posted 11 tackles in the regular season and didn’t record any stats in his one postseason appearance.

Adam Schefter reported San Francisco will sign a kicker to their practice squad which means they’ll need to release a player to make room.

49ers elevate 2 veterans from practice squad

The 49ers on Saturday added some veteran depth to both backfields with a couple roster moves.

The 49ers on Saturday announced a pair of roster moves ahead of their Week 14 matchup against the Buccaneers. San Francisco added depth to their backfields on both sides of the ball by elevating running back Tevin Coleman and cornerback Dontae Johnson off the practice squad.

Coleman and Johnson were both brought up via standard elevation, so they’ll each revert back to the practice squad following Sunday’s game and won’t count against the 53-man roster.

The Coleman elevation could signal that the 49ers are leaning toward a run-heavy game plan in Brock Purdy’s first NFL start. Coleman has played in two games for the 49ers this season and had a pair of touchdowns in Week 5 against the Panthers. Undrafted rookie Jordan Mason got the RB touches that didn’t go to Christian McCaffrey last week. With a Thursday game against the Seahawks looming and McCaffrey dealing with a knee injury, the 49ers may look to distribute the carries a little more evenly in their backfield while taking some of the pass catching onus off of McCaffrey.

Johnson figures to fill in on special teams with DB Tarvarius Moore sidelined by a knee injury. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he plays some nickel as well with Jimmie Ward playing more of a safety role against Tom Brady and the Bucs.

Kickoff from Levi’s Stadium on Sunday is set for 1:25pm PT.

RB Marlon Mack, WR Willie Snead IV among 3 added to 49ers practice squad

Some #49ers practice squad additions:

The 49ers on Wednesday announced the addition of three players to their practice squad, capping a significant shakeup to their 17-player practice roster over the last two days. This time they added three players after defensive end Kemoko Turay was added to the active roster. Running back Marlon Mack was officially signed, wide receiver Willie Snead IV re-joined the practice squad, and cornerback Kary Vincent Jr. joined the club.

Mack’s impending signing was originally reported Tuesday. He’ll give the 49ers some necessary in-house RB depth after Elijah Mitchell was placed on IR with a knee injury.

Snead was with San Francisco during the preseason and landed on their practice squad briefly. He was let go, but with a vacant spot he’ll give the 49ers a veteran in practice and an emergency option at receiver if they have any issues at that spot.

Vincent was a seventh-round pick of the Broncos last year out of LSU. He was traded to the Eagles where he started one of the two games he played and notched two tackles. He was waived by Philadelphia at final cuts this year.
