Highlights from Amari Cooper’s first Bills practices

Highlights from Amari Cooper’s first Bills practices

Amari Cooper has gotten on the field with the Buffalo Bills for the first time since joining the team.

On Tuesday, the Bills (4-2) acquired Cooper in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. With a need for a big-time wide receiver, Cooper’s arrival comes with a lot of excitement.

Cooper is preparing to make good on those expectations at practice this week, ahead of Buffalo’s contest at home against the Tennessee Titans (1-4) in Week 7.

Highlights from Cooper’s first practice with the team can be found below:

Tyreek Hill says Jalen Ramsey will handle new AFC East receivers

Davante Adams and Amari Cooper are the newest weapons in the AFC East, but Tyreek Hill says the Dolphins will be just fine.

The Buffalo Bills and New York Jets made moves to add offensive firepower this week, acquiring Amari Cooper and Davante Adams, respectively. Tyreek Hill isn’t too worried about it, though.

Hill says he’s still the top dog in the AFC East and the Miami Dolphins have all they need to slow down Adams and Cooper.

“They’re still not the best receiver in the league, because I am and I stand on that,” Hill said Wednesday. “No, I’m definitely happy for Davante teaming back up with his old quarterback. … And for Amari, I think him and Josh Allen, those two guys will play very well together.

“It’s going to be a good test for our DBs when we play them, but got Jalen Ramsey on our team – we straight.”

After missing all of preseason and much of training camp due to a hamstring injury, Ramsey had a sluggish start to 2024. But after a couple rough performances, he’s been mostly back to his usual self in recent weeks.

According to Pro Football Focus, Ramsey was targeted 10 times in the Dolphins’ last three games and has allowed six receptions for only 36 yards.

In Miami’s Week 11 win against the Las Vegas Raiders last season, Adams caught seven passes for 82 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown. However, PFF credited Ramsey with allowing only one reception for six yards in the five times he was targeted while defending Adams in that game.

With one more game against the Bills and two against the Jets still on the schedule, it may largely be up to Ramsey to keep the AFC East’s two newest receivers in check. Evidently, Hill’s confident he’ll get the job done.

Hall of Fame WR on Amari Cooper: Opposite of Stefon Diggs’ personality

Hall of Fame WR on Amari Cooper: Opposite of Stefon Diggs’ personality

The Buffalo Bills traded for Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper on Tuesday, and with that came some hot takes from the national media.

Fox Sports’ Michael Irvin had some words on the matter. More specifically, the Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer compared Cooper to former Bills WR Stefon Diggs. And, he wasn’t comparing their play on the field. Everyone knows they can both play at a high level. He was comparing their personalities in the Bills’ locker room.

On the Cooper to Buffalo trade, Irvin said, “I think it’s interesting that this is such an antithesis when you talk about Stefon Diggs. Personality-wise, they are absolute opposites. This is a quiet guy who’s going to be in the locker room just playing chess with people. He literally plays chess. He’s not going to be loud. He’s not gonna cause any stir. When the game pressure is on the line… he’s not going to be like Stefon Diggs demanding that the man throw you the ball no matter what. That’s what is different. Right now, that’s good for Josh Allen to get that talent without that noise.”

These are quite the statements coming from Irvin given that he knows Cooper well due to their Cowboys connection. And, Irvin had Cooper’s back when the Cowboys traded him to the Browns in 2022.

Bills GM Brandon Beane: ‘We have been all in, all along’

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane joined the Pat McAfee show Wednesday to answer some questions in light of the recent trade for wide receiver Amari Cooper.

Beane made one thing loud and clear. The Bills were never thinking about a rebuild. The trade for Cooper was evidence that the Bills are still very much all in to win the whole thing.

“We are still all in… If Cleveland wasn’t ready to do this we were going to continue to monitor it,” Beane said. “We still got a few weeks before the deadline. If we feel there is something else that we need or we feel there is something else that can get us over the top… we have been all in all along.”

When the Bills didn’t bring back a handful of marquee players this offseason, there were murmurs that it was a “reload” or “rebuild” year for the team. Jordan Poyer, Tre’Davious White, Stefon Diggs, Mitch Morse, Gabe Davis, Micah Hyde… there were a lot of familiar names and trusted leaders who exited the team. But, Beane had a plan all along. It wasn’t a rebuild, it was a transition.

“I know we have lost some names this offseason… some guys who have been captains… this was what I said was an offseason of transition,” Beane said. “The mindset here, as long as Josh Allen is our quarterback, we’re going to try to win this thing and we’re going to do what we can every single year.”

So, sitting at 4-2 with a lead in the AFC East, the team added a legit number-one receiver and has left the door open to upgrade the team further before the trade deadline. These are reassuring words from Beane if you are a Bills fan.

Underutilized with Browns, Amari Cooper gets a fresh start with Bills

Underutilized with Browns, Amari Cooper gets a fresh start with Bills

The Buffalo Bills and general manager Brandon Beane made a splash on Tuesday when the team announced they traded for wide receiver Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns.

The news came less than 24 hours after the Bills beat the New York Jets on Monday Night Football, 23-20. But, one thing that was evident in the Bills win (and for a good portion of the season) was the lack of a true boundary receiver.

Cooper solves that problem for the Bills. They now have a legit number-one option on the outside which can open up the offense.

This year in Cleveland, Cooper was a part of a terrible Browns offense. Through six weeks the Browns rank dead last in the NFL in offensive yards per game, 30th in points per game, and 30th in passing yards per game.

To make things worse, Cooper ranks second in the entire NFL in uncatchable target rate. A whopping 40% of his targets in Cleveland were deemed uncatchable. On an offense led by former Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey and quarterback Deshuan Watson, Cooper couldn’t get going.

Following the trade, Cooper made this post on Instagram:

https://x.com/agetzenberg/status/1846289070890123479

“Move or rust” is pretty self-explanatory from the 30-year-old out of the University of Alabama. If you don’t use something properly, it will sit around and rust. The Bills are giving Cooper a chance to avoid rusting and continue to shine as a wide receiver like he has in his career so far.

In his ten-year career, he’s reached 1,000 receiving yards in six of them and has made five Pro Bowls. Pairing up with Josh Allen and the Bills at this point in Cooper’s career has him thrilled about the possibilities.

In his introductory press conference on Wednesday, Cooper had praise for Allen and the winning culture in Buffalo:

“As far as the way he plays, it’s phenomenal,” Cooper said about Allen. “He plays with a lot of grit, a lot of hustle. He plays hard. He’s been one of the top quarterbacks in the game for a while now. Just to play with him and be able to experience that in person I think is gonna be real cool.”

“The goal of playing in the NFL is to win,” he continued. “To [be able to] come in and be on a winning team is a good feeling.”

Cooper goes from the 1-5 Browns sitting at the bottom of the AFC North to the 4-2 Bills who lead the AFC East.

Cooper’s first chance to suit up in his new number 18 Bills jersey will come this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans at home.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes discusses wide receiver depth: ‘I have extreme confidence‘

Kansas City #Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes discusses wide receiver depth: ‘I have extreme confidence‘ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs have often been linked in trade rumors to possibly adding a standout wide receiver. The recent trades involving Davante Adams and Amari Cooper have intensified the rumors as the deadline approaches.

During Wednesday’s press conference, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes seemingly dismissed any need for more wide receiver additions.

“I have extreme confidence with the guys that are on that football field. They’ve won games, they’ve won Super Bowls, (and) they’ve made plays in big moments,” said Mahomes. “Brett Veach has done a great job of bringing players in that can step up whenever their number is called.”

Players consistently criticized for lack of production this season include Skyy Moore and Justin Watson, who have played solid roles in addition to their typical receiver positions. The coaching staff and Mahomes believe them, and the rest of the room is prepared to take the next step when called upon for the rest of the season.

“Every time I step on that football field, I feel like we have the best ability to win, and I think that’s a credit to Brett Veach and coach (Andy) Reid bringing in guys that really get after it and put in the work to be great every single day.”

Mahomes is the leader on offense, and if he’s good with the current crop of receivers, then that’s all the front office needs to know. The injuries over the first few weeks have changed the offense, but they haven’t changed the goal of another Super Bowl run.

No, the Seattle Seahawks should not trade DK Metcalf

No, the Seattle Seahawks should not trade DK Metcalf. Teams who trade away their generational wide receiver talents often regret it.

The Seattle Seahawks are currently suffering a three-game losing streak, and it with it, comes plenty of frustration. Frustration from the team, frustration from fans, the media, etc. And with frustration, often comes wondering what to do next. What can be done to fix this team? Not just in the short term, but in the long run as well.

It is painfully obvious this team still has considerable holes, especially along the offensive line yet again. Seattle is, once more, in dire need of an infusion of talent that might only come via draft capital. As such, there are those suggesting the best way to get said draft capital would be to trade wide receiver DK Metcalf.

To that I say… absolutely not.

I understand the arguments in favor. Metcalf is likely to be incredibly expensive by the time his next contract comes due. He’s an elite player who will almost assuredly net Seattle plenty of quality draft picks. And with those draft picks, at least one could be spent on drafting his replacement…

…except, what if you aren’t able to find it? I do not think those who advocate for trading Metcalf truly realize what a unicorn he is. His size, speed and strength is unrivaled. Teams who trade away their generational wide receiver talents often regret it.

Take for example the Tennessee Titans, who traded away Metcalf’s former Ole Miss teammate, AJ Brown, to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a first rounder. Philadelphia’s offense was taken to another level with Brown and it helped fuel a Super Bowl run. The Titans used their first rounder to draft Treylon Burks, who has 699 yards and one touchdown in his career.

He is now in his third season in the league.

Offense may be down overall in the NFL, but this is still a league where the rules tilt heavily in favor of that side of the ball. The need for a dynamic, elite receiver is more important than ever. Even teams that are successful find themselves at a disadvantage without one. Take the 4-2 Buffalo Bills. They are an AFC Super Bowl contender who traded away Stefon Diggs this year. What did they just do? Acquired Amari Cooper, because they had a need at receiver.

Seattle wants to play physical football, like Macdonald’s old team in Baltimore. But for all the winning the Ravens do, I believe everyone (including most Ravens fans) would agree one of their primary weaknesses is they are somewhat limited offensively. Why? Because they do not have consistent down the field threats at wide receiver for their MVP caliber quarterback.

No, Metcalf is not perfect. What player is? If you want to critique his hands, his penchant for fumbling, and route running at times, fine. Go ahead. If this conversation was happening last year, I would have added his temperament, but he has been a model citizen on the field this year. Incredible improvement for him, and he should be commended for it. But to willingly move on from a 26-year-old who has 45 career touchdowns and has only missed one game in his career? A player who is clearly on his way to becoming one of the best receivers in franchise history? I simply cannot get behind this take.

DK Metcalf is a phenomenal asset for Seattle, and the organization is best served by keeping No. 14 in a Seahawks uniform for as long as they can.

What Sean McDermott said about new Bills WR Amari Cooper

What Sean McDermott said about new Bills WR Amari Cooper

The Buffalo Bills are likely excited to get Amari Cooper through the doors at One Bills Drive in Orchard Park.

However, head coach Sean McDermott is putting all the pressure in the world on him before he even does so.

McDermott commented on Cooper’s acquisition via trade with the Cleveland Browns this week. While expressing positives, McDermott did pump the brakes a bit.

“He’ll fit into that equation and we’ll get him integrated. Excited to see how quickly we can get him up to speed here,” McDermott said. “One player doesn’t save a team, one player doesn’t make a team.”

As for Cooper, he expressed being happy about the change.

“I’m just excited to turn a new chapter and to be able to contribute,” Cooper said.

Who to take in Week 7 in your NFL survivor pool

Breaking down the best strategies of how to win your NFL survivor pool as the season continues into Week 7.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

Things went according to plan in Week 6 in the National Football League as 12 favorites ended up winning outright — they even covered in 11 of those games. And, the 5 favorites of 5.5 or more points ended up winning outright, too, so there were very few upsets.

In fact, in the USA TODAY NFL Survivor Pool contest, just 5 people were eliminated in Week 6. There are still 65 of the 10,357 players who remain alive. After a wild first 5 weeks, things finally went the way the books suggested and there were no wild upsets.

As our 1st option last week, we were correct in taking the Philadelphia Eagles, coming off a bye week to get the job done against the lowly Cleveland Browns. Philly won 20-6.

While Cleveland managed just 244 total yards of offense with 5 sacks allowed and 7 penalties, it still made things rather close as it was tied 10-10 at halftime and Philly led just 13-10 after 3 quarters. In the end, the Browns covered as a 9.5-point underdog, one of just 3 dogs to bark in Week 6.

Our 2nd pick was backing the Atlanta Falcons on the road against the Carolina Panthers. Atlanta won 38-20.

The Panthers put up a good fight for a while. This game was tied 7-7 after 15 minutes and the Falcons led just 22-17 at the break. After 3 quarters, it was also a one-score game with Atlanta ahead 28-20. However, the Falcons pulled away in the 4th quarter for the comfortable 10-point victory — covering as 6-point favorites.

The Browns/Panthers fade strategy is an ace. Both are bad with a capital B, and the Browns just dealt WR Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills, taking away one of the few explosive weapons they had downfield.

In Week 7, we have 5 more teams favored by 5.5 or more points. Let’s hope the sense of normalcy remains this weekend.

The pick: Washington Commanders

Who they play: Home vs. Carolina Panthers – 4:05 p.m. (CBS)

  • Line: Commanders -7.5 / Moneyline (ML): Commanders -375 | Panthers +300

The Washington Commanders (4-2) put up a nice fight in Baltimore last week in the Battle of the Beltway, eventually falling 30-23 to the Ravens.

The Commanders offense has been explosive, which is not good news for the Carolina Panthers (1-5) defense. The Panthers have allowed 34 points or more, and 36.0 points per game (PPG), in the past 3 losses. Overall, Carolina has allowed 22 points or more in all 6 outings.

The Panthers switched from QB Bryce Young to QB Andy Dalton, and that has given the offense some life. But, losing DL Derrick Brown after Week 1, and LB Shaq Thompson in Week 4, to season-ending injuries, have exacerbated their problems. Carolina has so many holes to fill, and QB Jayden Daniels and the Washington offense will likely go wild at home in Week 7.

Conclusion: WASHINGTON IS MY TOP SURVIVOR PLAY IN WEEK 7.

No. 2 option: Buffalo Bills

Who they play: Home vs. Tennessee Titans – 1 p.m. (CBS)

  • Line: Bills -9 / ML: Bills -450 | Titans +350

Oh, you thought the Cincinnati Bengals here? It isn’t a bad pick, either, but they’re on the road in a rivalry game, so you never know.

The Buffalo Bills (4-2) are the biggest favorite on the board against the Tennessee Titans (1-4), and we haven’t used them this season as either the No. 1 or No. 2 option this season.

Buffalo looked OK against the New York Jets on Monday night in Week 6. It got the job done, however, with WR Khalil Shakir active, but not 100 percent, and rookie WR Keon Coleman coming along slowly, the Bills made a splash by landing Cooper prior to the deadline. He gives the Buffalo offense a legit WR1 who can spread the field, as the 2 young depth chart toppers were not scaring anybody.

It remains to be seen how many reps or targets Cooper will see, but it shouldn’t matter. Titans QB Will Levis is hot garbage, throwing for less than 100 yards last week against a leaky Indianapolis Colts pass D. The Titans do not have a prayer here.
