Ranking the NFL alternate helmets for 2023, including the Eagles’ beautiful kelly green look

Not every NFL alternate helmet is created equally.

Beginning with the 2022 season, the NFL allowed teams to add an alternate helmet to their uniform options.

Not every team rolled out a second helmet that year, but many did and the rollouts continued into the 2023 offseason, where some teams even broke out alternates to replace their first versions.

Some of the helmets are throwbacks, some are throwback-inspired and others are new concepts altogether. Whatever the approach of each team, there are helmets that definitely stand out above the rest.

Below is a ranking of each helmet — independent of full uniforms — judged by style, creativity, nostalgia or just simply how much I would want to rock each one.

NFL fans ripped the Colts’ new cheap-looking alternate jerseys to shreds

Whew, people did not like these new Colts jerseys.

The Indianapolis Colts unveiled a new set of alternate uniforms on Thursday morning, and early fan response was not kind.

The blue-and-black alternate “Indiana Nights” Colts jerseys don’t look terrible, but they are a bit uninspired for what has been unveiled this week with blue-dominant jerseys.

The Seattle Seahawks earned raves for their blue-driven 1990s throwback uniforms, which the Colts have not enjoyed for this unveiling.

You can be the judge below as to whether or not these new Colts alternate uniforms do the trick or not, but a lot of your fellow NFL fans feel that they are a huge whiff.

As you can imagine, some of the negative responses are pretty brutal.

Some folks point out that these jerseys look like a cheap knockoff of what the Duke football team uses, while others just feel like the uniform is a genuine miss in the design department. We’ll let you read their thoughts below.

Texas AD forgot how sunsets worked while trying to defend his school’s lack of alternate jerseys

The sun sets on this comparison from Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte.

They say everything is bigger in Texas, but things aren’t different colors.

When discussing his school’s lack of alternate uniforms on Monday, University of Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte got a bit confused as to how sunsets work.

Del Conte wanted to justify the school sticking to its patented Burnt Orange and White (instead of wearing alternate colors) by referencing the rhythms of nature.

However, he missed the mark by an Austin mile when trying to compare the school’s home jerseys to the colors of any given sunset.

Basically, the Texas athletic director might be shocked to find out that, yes, sunsets are actually other colors than burnt orange.

Sunsets don’t really need divine intervention to morph into other colors than burnt orange, and Texas holding to jersey tradition is much more of a personal decision than a comparable act of nature.

Longhorn fans love their traditions, and burnt orange suits them. Just don’t drag sunsets into this. They aren’t afraid of alternate uniforms.

Bears fans have mixed reactions on their new alternate orange helmets

Bears fans have mixed reactions when it comes to the team’s new alternate orange helmet and uniform combination.

NFL teams are finally allowed to wear alternate helmets beginning in the 2022 season and many franchises have been busy unveiling new looks and colors that will be worn for specific games. Now, it’s the Chicago Bears turn to jump on the bandwagon.

The Bears revealed their new orange alternate helmet on Sunday afternoon, complete with the blue “C” as their logo outlined in white, and a blue facemask as well. The helmets will be worn during their Thursday Night Football matchup at home against the Washington Commanders on October 13th, as well as their road matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on October 30th. The Bears will also don their orange alternate jerseys with the new helmets for each game.

Aside from the blank blue helmets that are worn with their throwback uniforms, this is the most drastic change to their headwear in decades.

When the Bears broke the news on their social media accounts, it was met with mixed reactions from the fanbase and even a current player. Some love the new design while others don’t care for the change.

Ranking the new NFL alternate helmets from best (Falcons) to worst (Texans)

Teams can finally wear alternate helmets in 2022.

Last July, the NFL announced it was finally lifting its ban on alternate helmets. A year later, teams are now unveiling those alternates to be debuted this season, and fans are pumped.

While some teams have rich histories and awesome throwbacks to pull from in the design of their new shells, other teams opted for brand new looks. Most of the reaction is excitement, but not every helmet stacks up the same. Some are simply better than others. So let’s rank them.

For the purposes of this, I’m only ranking helmets — not the complete alternate uniform. The biggest determining factor was which helmet I would most want to wear if I was a player. But nostalgia and creativity also played a part. Let’s get into it.

Get a peek at the jerseys Ohio State football will wear in the Sugar Bowl against Clemson

Look at what the Ohio State football team will be rockin’ out for the College Football Playoff semifinal in the Sugar Bowl against Clemson.

Ohio State continues to put the final preparations together to try and get past Clemson for the first time, once again in a semifinal of the College Football Playoff. That game will be coming to a television or streaming device near you on Friday night, but in the meantime, there’s plenty of other things going on.

In fact, when you’re planning a party, you don’t do anything until you pick out the threads you’re going to wear. And … in the case of the Buckeyes in 2020, they’re throwing it back to 2014 when they were in the Sugar Bowl last. You remember that game right? On that night, Ohio State slew the Alabama dragon on the way to a national championship.

OSU did it in style, wearing the road version of the “diamond quest” jerseys. Well, the Buckeyes have announced that they’ll be donning the same good luck winning attire in the Big Easy once again by way of a picture released to the official Twitter feed of Ohio State Football Monday.

We like this look. It’s a clean, traditional style that looks even better holding a trophy. Hopefully, we get that same look and feel around Midnight on Friday night.
