Bears fans have mixed reactions on their new alternate orange helmets

Bears fans have mixed reactions when it comes to the team’s new alternate orange helmet and uniform combination.

NFL teams are finally allowed to wear alternate helmets beginning in the 2022 season and many franchises have been busy unveiling new looks and colors that will be worn for specific games. Now, it’s the Chicago Bears turn to jump on the bandwagon.

The Bears revealed their new orange alternate helmet on Sunday afternoon, complete with the blue “C” as their logo outlined in white, and a blue facemask as well. The helmets will be worn during their Thursday Night Football matchup at home against the Washington Commanders on October 13th, as well as their road matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on October 30th. The Bears will also don their orange alternate jerseys with the new helmets for each game.

Aside from the blank blue helmets that are worn with their throwback uniforms, this is the most drastic change to their headwear in decades.

When the Bears broke the news on their social media accounts, it was met with mixed reactions from the fanbase and even a current player. Some love the new design while others don’t care for the change.

Ranking the new NFL alternate helmets from best (Falcons) to worst (Texans)

Teams can finally wear alternate helmets in 2022.

Last July, the NFL announced it was finally lifting its ban on alternate helmets. A year later, teams are now unveiling those alternates to be debuted this season, and fans are pumped.

While some teams have rich histories and awesome throwbacks to pull from in the design of their new shells, other teams opted for brand new looks. Most of the reaction is excitement, but not every helmet stacks up the same. Some are simply better than others. So let’s rank them.

For the purposes of this, I’m only ranking helmets — not the complete alternate uniform. The biggest determining factor was which helmet I would most want to wear if I was a player. But nostalgia and creativity also played a part. Let’s get into it.

NFL to allow alternate helmets in 2022 and here’s what the Raiders’ could look like

While the Raiders aren’t much for participating in new alternate uniform combinations, they have been known to sport a throwback uniform from time to time. It’s how they participate in the NFL’s Color Rush games without breaking their stance on not messing with their uniform.

The NFL has allowed teams to don many different alternate uniforms and throwbacks. But they don’t currently allow teams to wear alternate helmets. As of 2022, that will change.

Some are having dreams of black helmets, note that the rule allows alternate helmets for teams wearing “throwback uniforms”, not alternate uniforms. That means throwback helmets as well and the Raiders have never worn black helmets.

Over the years you will see the Raiders don a uniform that looks a lot like the ones they wore in the 70s in which their white uniforms have numerals with silver inside black instead of the other way around which is how their standard uniforms are.

What they have rarely messed with, however, is the helmet. There’s a throwback version of that too, which has silver inside the shield instead of black. They wore those helmets back in September of 2009 for their 50th anniversary season opener against the Chargers, but not since.

Not only is the silver inside the shield hotness, but so too is the swords coming out of the shield. This needs to happen. Give the people what they want.
