Broncos OLB Von Miller has come a long way since 2013 season

Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller was suspended and then injured in 2013. He turned his career around in 2014.

Two years after being selected by the Broncos with the second overall pick in the draft, outside linebacker Von Miller was suspended six games in 2013 after turning in a diluted drug test.

After returning from the suspension, Miller played in nine games before suffering a season-ending ACL injury. Denver went on to reach the Super Bowl but Miller was unable to participate and the Broncos were blown out by the Seahawks, 43-8.

Just three years into his career, Miller would have to try to recover from a serious injury while being frequently drug tested by the NFL after his violation in 2013. The edge defender was at an important point in his life.

“You know how some people say take it one day at a time? I took it six hours at a time,” Miller said during a conference call with reporters on April 6. “I went to work and did what I had to do. Then I went home and did what I had to do. I made it small and achievable. Every day that passes you can gain trust or you can lose it. I just tried to put together a lot of good years, just try to learn from that.”

The following offseason, Denver signed DeMarcus Ware, who became a mentor for Miller. After recovering from his ACL injury, Miller totaled 14 sacks in 2014. He was cleared from the NFL’s drug program in 2015 and he hasn’t faced any trouble with the league office since then.

“I was young in my career,” Miller said. “If I would have made the same mistake later in my career, it would have been different. I was young in my career and I was able to be around a lot of great players. They helped me develop. Here we are today. It’s a huge blessing. I’m very appreciative and grateful to be here and still be a Bronco here.”

Miller and Ware helped the Broncos defeat the Panthers 24-10 in Super Bowl 50, combing to total 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Miller took home Super Bowl MVP honors and five years later, he was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team. Miller’s come a long way since the 2013 season.

Kam Chancellor a glaring snub from NFL’s All-Decade team for 2010s

The Seattle Seahawks had five representatives on the NFL’s All-Decade team, but no Kam Chancellor was a glaring omission.

There’s no debate the five current and former members of the Seattle Seahawks who were selected to the NFL’s All-Decade team of the 2010s deserved to be there.

Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman were pillars of the Legion of Boom, the most famous defense of the millennium. Bobby Wagner is a future Hall of Famer and one of the last remaining great middle linebackers in the game. Marshawn Lynch was a transcendent power running back, and coach Pete Carroll was one of the most successful coaches of the decade.

As always with lists like this, however, the list of Seahawks could have been even bigger.

While Russell Wilson is no doubt an elite quarterback, it’s hard to imagine a spot for him with Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers on the roster, and Drew Brees probably has a compelling case as No. 3 in line.

However, the real snub was the third member of the famous Legion of Boom, Kam Chancellor.

Chancellor was passed over in favor of Eric Weddle, Eric Berry and Tyrann Mathieu, and while those guys may have played in more games, Chancellor’s impact was great and his omission from this list is glaring.

Chancellor struck fear in opponents with his thunderous hits despite playing in an era that gradually gave more power to receivers. He should have been the Super Bowl MVP in Seattle’s 43-8 thrashing of the Denver Broncos to cap the 2013 season.

Weddle, Berry and Mathieu are all great, no doubt, but it feels like Chancellor is getting the shaft because of a career-ending injury that cut his time playing in the last decade short, an unfair disadvantage that does not take away from what he accomplished.

Hall of Fame tackle Walter Jones, among many others, voiced his displeasure with Chancellor’s omission on Twitter.

Chancellor, who retired in 2018, was a four-time Pro Bowler who recorded 12 interceptions, 44 passes defensed and nine forced fumbles over the course of eight seasons.

4 Chiefs snubbed from NFL’s 2010s All-Decade team

Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and other Kansas City Chiefs deserved a spot on the 2010s All-Decades team.

The NFL and Pro Football Hall of Fame have named players and coaches to the 2010s All-Decade team. The Kansas City Chiefs had six members of the franchise selected, but there were several other members noticeably absent. Here’s a look at four of the most deserving members of the Chiefs franchise that were snubbed from the team:

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

HC Andy Reid

Is there anyone more obviously absent from this team than Reid? From 2010-2019, with the Eagles and the Chiefs, Reid has a 99-61 regular-season record with a 5-6 postseason record. He finally got a Super Bowl victory this season with Kansas City. His leadership changed the fortune of the Chiefs franchise for the 2010s decade and it has set them up to be successful for the next decade too. Perhaps, if Reid coaches for another 10 seasons, he’ll do enough to make the list in 2030.

Von Miller, Chris Harris named to NFL’s All-Decade Team

Miller and Harris both joined the Broncos in 2011 — Miller as the second overall pick in the draft and Harris as a college free agent. They were key members of a Denver defense that led the team to a win in Super Bowl 50 following the 2015 season.

Harris now plays for the Chargers.

Joe Thomas, Alex Mack earn All-Decade Team of the 2010s honors

Joe Thomas, Alex Mack earn All-Decade Team of the 2010s honors

The Cleveland Browns didn’t win very often in the 2010s, but they did have two of the best offensive linemen during the decade. Left tackle Joe Thomas and center Alex Mack represent the Browns on the Pro Football Hall of Fame All-Decade Team of the 2010s.

The full list of first-team honorees was revealed on Monday. Thomas is one of four tackles, while Mack made the cut as one of the two centers.

Thomas played every offensive snap from 2010 through the seventh game of the 2017 season, an iron man string that began in 2007. He earned Pro Bowl nods every year from 2010-2016 and was a 1st-team All-Pro in five of those seasons. He retired due to injury after the 2017 campaign.

Mack played the first six seasons of the decade in Cleveland, earning three of his five career Pro Bowl berths during his Browns tenure. He remains the starting center for the Atlanta Falcons.

The full list of the All-Decade team is at the Pro Football Hall of Fame website.

5 Seahawks selected to NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 2010’s

Marshawn Lynch, Bobby Wagner, Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman and Pete Carroll were all selected to the All-Decade team of the 2010’s.

The NFL and the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced that 52 players and two coaches have been selected to the 2010’s All-Decade team – and five of them were members of the Seattle Seahawks.

Two key pieces of the Legion of Boom, safety Earl Thomas and cornerback Richard Sherman, made the defensive squad alongside linebacker Bobby Wagner. They were joined by running back Marshawn Lynch on offense, as well as coach Pete Carroll, who was the second coach alongside New England’s Bill Belichick.

Notably absent is Russell Wilson, who was passed over in favor of Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady at the quarterback position, as well as safety Kam Chancellor, the third key member of the LOB who lost out to Eric Berry and Eric Weddle for the chance to be alongside Thomas once again.

Wagner, Thomas, Sherman, Lynch and Carroll are all no doubt deserving of this honor, having been members of the teams that went to back-to-back Super Bowls in the early part of the decade.

Now, as the clock turns to a new decade, the Seahawks will hope that many of their current young stars will make their mark in the 2020’s.

Calvin Johnson, Ndamukong Suh represent the Lions on the All-Decade Team of the 2010s

Calvin Johnson, Ndamukong Suh represent the Lions on the All-Decade team of the 2010s

The Pro Football Hall of Fame revealed its All-Decade Team for the 2010s on Monday. Two players from the Detroit Lions, Calvin Johnson and Ndamukong Suh, made the first-team honors.

Johnson spent the 2010-2015 seasons with the Lions before retiring. He made the Pro Bowl every season he played during the decade and earned three 1st-team All-Pro nods (2011-2013). In 2012 Johnson set the NFL record for receiving yards with 1,964.

His ranks during the 2010-2015 seasons overall:

Receptions: 2nd

Receiving yards: 1st, by over 1,300

Receiving TDs: 1st

Suh stood out at defensive tackle for the Lions from 2010-2014. Like Johnson, he earned 1st-team All-Pro honors three times in that span. Suh has bounced around the last few years but the second overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft remains one of the best at his craft.

The full list of the All-Decade team is available at the Pro Football Hall of Fame website.

The NFL and the Pro Football Hall of Fame broke the doldrums of no football on Monday by releasing their All-Decade team for the 2010s. The decade wasn’t kind to the Pittsburgh Steelers with only one current player on the roster. Center Maurkice Pouncey made the cut but that was it.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention that former Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown made the team. Despite what has happened since Pittsburgh traded him, Brown made this list for his play with the Steelers. Nevertheless, it’s disconcerting to see so few Steelers on this list.
