Athlon Sports names 5 Michigan State football players to preseason all-conference team

Check out which five Spartans are being predicted by Athlon Sports to go all-conference:

Michigan State is looking to bounce back from a pitiful 5-7 campaign a year ago that saw the Spartans finish with a 3-6 record in Big Ten play. There is hope going into the 2023 campaign, as the Spartans bring back a host of talent that has experience winning at this level.

Athlon Sports has come out with their predictions for the 2023 Big Ten season, releasing their all-conference team.

Check out which five Spartans made the cut, and are being predicted by Athlon to go all-conference:

Joey Hauser snubbed from all conference team, gets honorable mention

Joey Hauser was snubbed from the all conference teams, only receiving an honorable mention

While Tyson Walker and AJ Hoggard have been named to the all conference teams, one member of the Spartans team has been snubbed from the honors. After a season in which he averaged 14.2 points and 7 rebounds per game, Joey Hauser has been snubbed from being a part of the all conference teams, only getting honorable mention honors.

Being honorably mentioned is a nice honor for Hauser, but feels underwhelming, considering the strong year the Michigan State senior had.

Five Oregon Duck defenders named to the Associated Press first team

Led by Kayvon Thibodeaux and Noah Sewell, Oregon took up nearly half of the AP first-team defensive selections.

The Oregon Ducks defense was one of the best in the Pac-12 and the Associated Press took notice.

Oregon occupied nearly half of the AP All-Pac-12 first-team defense released on Friday with five selections, while two more players earned second-team honors.

Defensive linemen Popo Aumavae and Brandon Dorlus, along with defensive back Verone McKinley III, linebacker Noah Sewell, and defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux were all named to the first team, giving Oregon five of the 11 spots on the first-team defense.

The Ducks have five first-team selections for the second time in the last three years, and their five defensive first-team honorees are the most in program history.

On offense, running back Travis Dye and kicker Camden Lewis earned second-team recognition, giving Oregon seven total AP All-Pac-12 selections.

To no one’s surprise, Thibodeaux is an AP All-Pac-12 first-team selection for the third year in a row, becoming the first Oregon player ever to achieve that feat.

Four Longhorns named to All-Big 12 first team

Four Longhorns received first-team honors.

Texas had a disappointing 5-7 campaign in Steve Sarkisian’s first season as head coach.

The Horns were riding high after a 4-1 start to the season before Caleb Williams lead a historic comeback in the Cotton Bowl. Texas came crashing down to Earth after that game, losing six straight.

Texas still saw some excellent individual seasons from multiple players. Bijan Robinson, Xavier Worthy, Derek Kerstetter and Cameron Dicker were all voted first-team All-Big 12.

Robinson was the catalyst for the Texas offense all season long. The star running back finished with over 1,400 total yards and 15 touchdowns in only 10 games played. Robinson will be back at Texas next season for his junior year.

Texas found gold with freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy. He set almost every freshman wide receiver record in program history and was named Big-12 Offensive Freshman of the year. Worthy is the first Longhorn to win the award since Colt McCoy in 2006.

Derek Kerstetter was one of the few bright spots on the Texas offensive line that struggled most of the year. Replacing the fifth-year senior will be a difficult task for offensive line coach Kyle Flood.

Lastly, Cameron Dicker had a phenomenal year punting the ball. Dicker average 46.8 yards per punt on the year, tops in the Big 12.
