Big 12 announces its 2023 all-conference team

10 players from Texas’ 11-1 squad made All-Big 12 teams.

It’s a good week to be a Texas Longhorn. The team’s 11-1 season comes with plenty of accolades, and the Big 12 gave the team its due recognition leading up to the conference title game.

Several Texas players received conference honors from the Big 12. The defense and special teams possessed the most shine.

Defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat’s breakout season culminates in a Big 12 defensive player of the year award. That might be a rarity for defensive tackles, but Sweat’s impact is unquestioned.

Fellow defensive tackle Byron Murphy received well-earned recognition in Big 12 football honors announcements. Murphy was named the Big 12 defensive lineman of the year. On offense, Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell took home Big 12 offensive newcomer of the year honors.

Let’s look at what other Longhorns received recognition in the Big 12’s first team list.

Social media reacts to Texas LB Jaylan Ford being snubbed by Big 12 coaches

Big 12 coaches owe Texas linebacker Jaylan Ford an apology.

Jaylan Ford had a historically great season at linebacker. Apparently not every all-conference voter took notice.

Ford was not voted as the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year for the 2022 season. The talented linebacker was toward the top of multiple statistical categories, as we noted earlier this week.

The first-year starter ranked second in the conference in tackles (108), second in interceptions (4) and first in forced fumbles (3). His well-rounded performance didn’t distract Big 12 coaches from Felix Anudike-Uzomah’s 7.5 sacks.

For context, Barryn Sorrell had 5.5 sacks and was not included on the first or second team, another snub in its own right. It was yet another of many instances Texas players did not receive due credit.

As you would imagine, the news caused on stir on social media. Here’s how those who watch the team took the news.

The 12 Texas players on their way to all-conference honors

Looking at which Texas players could make the All-Big 12 team.

Texas football looks to have turned a corner after last year’s 5-7 season. The success is due in large part to multiple players elevating their play this year.

The Texas defense has been a subplot to Quinn Ewers and the Texas offense, but certainly deserves recognition. Players at every level of the defense are playing high level football.

D’Shawn Jamison and Keondre Coburn are two of the most improved players on the defense. Not only are they playing like All-Big 12 players, but they’ve raised their draft stock considerably.

Barryn Sorrell has been a pleasant surprise for Texas. Sorrell is one of many Longhorns that have thrived at getting to the quarterback.

On offense, if Quinn Ewers is not winning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, Kelvin Banks Jr might be the top competition. Banks and Cole Hutson have played critical roles in one of the best pass protecting lines in recent history for Texas.

Here are 12 players who might end up with All-Big 12 honors this season.

Two Longhorns Named To Preseason All Big 12 Team

Texas Longhorns baseball team has two players represented on the preseason All-Big 12 team with Bryce Elder and Eric Kennedy.

Two weeks until the Longhorns start their baseball conference championship defense against the Rice Owls on February 15th. The Big 12 announced their preseason All-Big 12 team. Two Longhorns represented on the team with pitcher Bryce Elder and outfielder Eric Kennedy.

Elder is heading into his junior season for the Longhorns. Last year with Texas, Elder was named to the All-Big 12 second team. He posted a 2.93 ERA in 13 starts where he pitched 83 innings. He led the team with 86 strikeouts and was named Big 12 pitcher of the week on multiple occasions. Elder looks to lead the staff back to the College World Series in Omaha for the second-consecutive season for the first time since 2002-2005 when Texas participated in the championship tournament for four consecutive years.

Kennedy will return to Austin for his sophomore season. The former high school All-American was named to the All-Big 12 honorable mention team as a freshman. He led all Longhorns with a .310 batting average and hit safely in 13 of 14 of the final games of the season. He scored 41 runs with eight doubles, three triples and two home runs in 2019.
