Nebraska entered Sunday’s high noon showdown with an uphill battle. The Huskers hosted No. 2 Iowa with Caitlin Clark, who is 39 points away from becoming the all-time scorer in NCAA women’s basketball history. Nebraska decided to spoil the surprise, upsetting the Hawkeyes 82-79.

Iowa defeated Nebraska in every matchup since Clark donned the Hawkeye jersey. Heading into the fourth, it seemed Iowa would win once again, up 69-55. But the Huskers rallied, outscoring the Hawkeyes 27-10 in the fourth to complete the comeback.

Clark nevertheless continued to put on a show in Lincoln, dropping 31 points, delivering ten assists, and hauling in eight rebounds for Iowa.

For Nebraska, Jaz Shelley finished as the Huskers’ top scorer, dropping 23 points on the afternoon. Shelley scored 15 of her points from beyond the arc, going 5-of-10 in three-point shooting. She also scored 10 points in the fourth, including the team’s final seven points.

Kendall Moriarty, Logan Nissley, and Natalie Potts combined for the other 17 fourth-quarter points. Nissley dropped 15 points in the game and went 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Potts delivered 14 points, scoring eight points in the fourth. Moriarty scored seven points for Nebraska on the afternoon.

Alexis Markowski also scored 15 points for the Huskers, accompanying her 11 rebounds in the win for her 35th career double-double. Markowski is fourth in school history for career double-doubles and is six away from breaking the school record.

Nebraska moves to 17-8 on the season and 9-5 in conference play. The Huskers hit the road for another top-five showdown, playing No. 5 Ohio State on Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. and can be viewed on Peacock.

Women’s basketball defeats Michigan 65-59

The Huskers hit the road to battle Michigan Tuesday night. Nebraska entered the game coming off a one-point loss to Rutgers on Saturday.

The Huskers hit the road to battle Michigan Tuesday night. Nebraska entered the game coming off a one-point loss to Rutgers on Saturday. The Huskers’ battle with the Wolverines also went down to the wire. This time, Nebraska finished on top, taking down Michigan 65-59.

The Huskers held the lead for most of the second half, after trailing by as much as nine in the first half. Nebraska’s lead over the Wolverines never grew bigger than six points, but the Huskers held off Michigan’s attempts to take the lead back.

Alexis Markowski shepherded the most points for Nebraska, tallying up 18 points on the night. Markowski delivered her 18 points by going 8-of-11 in total shooting. She also led the team in rebounds with nine. Natalie Potts and Jaz Shelley also dropped double-digit points, with Potts scoring 12 and Shelley chalking up 10.

The Huskers move to 15-8 on the season and 7-5 in conference play. They will return home for their second clash against Caitlyn Clark and No. 2 Iowa on Sunday. Tipoff is at noon and can be viewed on FOX.

Women’s basketball fall short at home against Rutgers 71-70

The Huskers remained home following their win against Purdue to face Rutgers on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskers remained home following their win against Purdue to face Rutgers on Saturday afternoon. Though Nebraska put up a fight with the Scarlet Knights, Rutgers squeaked out the win.

The Scarlet Knights won the battle through their shooting efficiency, going 28-of-47 while Nebraska completed 23-of-68. The Huskers remained in the battle through trips to the free-throw line (17) and points off turnovers (25).  But Rutgers’ third-quarter surge put Nebraska down 60-49, forcing the Huskers to climb out of the hole in the fourth.

Alexis Markowski and Jaz Shelley finished the game as Nebraska’s top scorers. The duo dropped double-digit points for the Huskers, with Markowski scoring 13 and Shelley landing 11.

Freshmen Jessica Petrie and Logan Nissley each put together a solid game for Nebraska, with Petrie scoring nine points and Nissley dropping eight.

Kendall Moriarty also scored eight points, going 2-of-2 in total shooting, landing both of her shots from beyond the arc while also being 2-of-2 from the free throw line.

The Huskers now fall to 14-8 on the season and 6-5 in conference play. Nebraska will travel to Michigan for its next game Tuesday night. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and can be viewed on B1G+.

Rutgers women’s basketball looking to get back on track against Nebraska

Rutgers women’s basketball faces another top-notch Big Ten opponent.

As Rutgers women’s basketball begins their February schedule with a matchup against Nebraska, they will be looking to end their 12-game losing streak. Their last win came on December 5 against La Salle.

However, they have a formidable opponent in Nebraska in their way. The Cornhuskers are off to a 14-7 start and have won six conference games. They have been led by Alexis Markowski, who is averaging 16.6 points per game. She has gotten some help from Jaz Shelley who is averaging 12.3 points per game.

While Nebraska is the favorite entering this game, they will be tasked with stopping Destiny Adams. The Rutgers star has been a scoring machine of late. In her last five games, the New Jersey native has scored at least 20 points three times.

 

For Rutgers to end their losing streak, they must be more consistent. During January, they were plagued by slow starts and could not get critical stops. If they can put together four good quarters, then they may have a chance at an upset.

Additionally, Saturday will be an excellent opportunity for Rutgers to end their conference struggles. They are 0-10 in Big Ten play this season and are the only Big Ten team without a conference win.

Rutgers will be eager to prove themselves in front of a packed crowd at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The Huskers returned home to play Purdue following two straight losses on the road. Nebraska snapped its two-game skid by taking down the Boilermakers 68-54.

The Huskers battled it out with Purdue throughout the first half and entered the locker rooms up 32-29. However, Nebraska took off in third quarter, outscoring the Boilermakers 22-14 to enter the fourth up 54-43.

The Huskers finished the game with five players scoring double-digit points. Alexis Markowski and Darian White shared the top spot as Nebraska’s top scorer with both players delivering 14 points on the night.

Natalie Potts and Kendall Moriarty both finished runner-up in scoring for the Huskers in the win, dropping 11 points. Moriarty’s 11 points in the game also tied her career high. Jaz Shelley rounded out the double-digit scorers for Nebraska, tallying up 10 points on the night.

The Huskers move to 14-7 on the season and 6-4 in conference play. They will remain home to host Rutgers on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is set 2 p.m. and can be viewed on B1G+ and Nebraska Public Media.

The Huskers traveled to their neighboring state Saturday for their first of two conference rivalry games against Caitlin Clark and No. 5 Iowa. Clark’s undefeated against the Huskers with a 7-0 record heading into the matchup. That record became 8-0 as Clark and the Hawkeyes took down Nebraska 92-73.

The Huskers battled Clark and Iowa throughout the first half and the fourth quarter. But a third-quarter slip-up ended up being the factor in the game. Iowa and Clark outscored the Huskers 27-18, giving the Hawkeyes a 63-49 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Clark tallied up 38 points in Iowa’s win, going 12-of-22 in shooting and 8-of-15 from beyond the arc. Both Iowa and Nebraska took 59 shots in the game but the Hawkeyes landed eight more baskets than the Huskers.

Jaz Shelley led Nebraska in scoring, dropping 19 points by going 7-of-17 in shooting and 5-of-11 in three-point shooting. Alexis Markowski finished by Shelley with 17 points and 11 rebounds, earning her 34th double-double in her career. Markowski is now fourth in school history in career double-doubles and is six away from tying the school record.

The Huskers hit the road once again for a Big Ten showdown, this time flying out to Penn State for a Sunday afternoon clash.

Nebraska struggled against the Nittany Lions, falling behind 64-45 entering the fourth quarter. The Huskers fought back in the fourth but couldn’t erase the massive deficit, ending the game with an 82-73 defeat.

Penn State edged out Nebraska in total shooting, going 29-of-62 from the field, while Nebraska went 25-of-68, which ended up being the difference maker.

Alexis Markowski led Nebraska in scoring and rebounding, dropping 16 points and securing 19 rebounds, her 12th double-double of the season. Markowski is now fourth in school history with 33 double-doubles in her career, tying with Emily Cady. Markowski needs seven more double-doubles to tie the school record held by Kelsey Griffin and Jordan Hooper.

Darian White and Jaz Shelley both scored 12 points to round out Nebraska’s double-digit scorers in the loss.

The Huskers’ women’s basketball team returned home following a tough loss to Minnesota. Nebraska fell short of a comeback against the Golden Gophers and looked to correct the ship in its Wednesday night game against Michigan. The Huskers did just that, dominating the Wolverines en route to a 62-43 win.

Nebraska took control of the game from tipoff, wrapping up the first quarter up 17-8. The lead continued to grow throughout the game, ending with the 62-43 victory. Natalie Potts and Darian White led the way for the Huskers in scoring with both dropping 13 points on the night.

Potts’ put together another solid night in her freshman season, going four-of-six in total shooting, five-of-five in free throw shooting and hauling in 10 rebounds.

Kendall Moriarty joined in on the fun for Nebraska, scoring a career-high 11 points after going four-of-seven in total shooting. Alexis Markowski rounded out the team’s double-digit scorers, dropping 10 points.

The Huskers move to 13-5 on the season and 5-2 in conference play. The team will travel to Penn State for its next game on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is set for noon and can be viewed on B1G+.

The Nebraska women’s basketball team traveled up to Minnesota for a Sunday afternoon conference showdown. The Huskers fell behind early, entering halftime down 32-19.

Nebraska sparked a couple of comebacks in the second half, cutting the lead down to 59-58 entering the final minute. But a 3-pointer by the Golden Gophers in the final minute ended the Huskers’ comeback, resulting in a 62-58 defeat.

Alexis Markowski led Nebraska in scoring and rebounding on the afternoon, dropping 17 points and securing 14 rebounds. This makes it Markowski’s 11th double-double of the season and her 32nd double-double of her career.

Jaz Shelley finished runner-up in scoring for Nebraska in the loss. Shelley scored 12 points on the afternoon, all from three-point range, going 4-of-12 from beyond the arc.

Freshman Natalie Potts dropped double-digit points as well for the Huskers, tallying up 10 points in the loss and going five-of-nine in total shooting.

With the loss, Nebraska falls to 12-5 on the season and 4-2 in conference play. The Huskers will host Michigan for their next game on Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be viewed on B1G+.

The Nebraska women’s basketball team played host to Big Ten foe Illinois on Thursday night.

The Nebraska women’s basketball team played host to Big Ten foe Illinois on Thursday night. The Huskers and Fighting Illini traded blows throughout the evening but the Huskers eventually pulled away for a 56-48 victory.

Jaz Shelley finished the night as Nebraska’s leading scorer, racking up 17 points while going four-of-seven in 3-point shooting and five-of-six in free throw shooting.

Alexis Markowski joined Shelley in the double-digit party, dropping 14 points and 15 rebounds to earn her 10th double-double of the season and her 31st double-double in her collegiate career. Markowski currently stands fifth in school history for double-doubles and only needs ten more to surpass the school record held by Jordan Hooper and Kelsey Griffin.

Nebraska moves to 12-4 on the season and 4-1 in conference play. The Huskers travel north to face Minnesota on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. and can be viewed on B1G+.
