Alabama Baseball listed as a ‘Sleeper Team’ to make it to Omaha

Could Alabama Baseball be a hidden gem in 2024? Many believe they have what it takes.

In 2023, Alabama baseball finished the season with an overall record of 43-21 and an SEC record of 16-14, but that’s not why people were talking about the Crimson Tide. The betting scandal that led to head coach Brad Bohannon’s dismissal from the team stole headlines.

Now, Alabama baseball enters the 2024 team with a new head coach, Rob Vaughn, and plenty of new players. Expectations for this team are, for the most part, unknown. For that reason, you can’t rule out the Crimson Tide too early.

D1Baseball recently asked every baseball team in the country which program could be a “sleeper team,” or a team that may surprise many, with its performance in the upcoming season.

Though East Carolina received the most votes with 20, Alabama received 10 votes. Alabama has not been back to Omaha for the College World Series since 1999.

Opening Day for the Tide is Friday, Feb. 15 in Tuscaloosa against Manhattan College, which is the first game of a three-game series.

Alabama baseball 2024 team roster

With baseball season right around the corner, Roll Tide Wire has decided to provide a glimpse at how the Alabama baseball roster looks heading into the new season.

The Alabama baseball team had an impressive showing last season. A team that was forced to overcome a coaching change and ongoing scandals reached the NCAA super regional round. It was the first time Alabama had reached a super regional since 2010 under former head coach Mitch Gaspard.

The Crimson Tide pulled off a virtually impossible feat under the direction of interim head coach Jason Jackson. Despite coming up short in the super regionals, the performance served as a reminder the Alabama baseball program was trending in the right direction.

Fast forward to 2024 and the Crimson Tide are led by first-year head coach Rob Vaughn. Several new players and coaches have made their way to Tuscaloosa. Needless to say, it should be interesting to see how things pan out for Alabama during the 2024 season.

Roll Tide Wire breaks down the 2024 Alabama baseball roster:

Projecting the most impactful transfer for each SEC baseball program for the 2024 season

The SEC has no shortage of talent on the baseball diamond. See the most impactful transfer for every SEC team in 2024.

The SEC has some of the best talent in the country when it comes to baseball. Each year, the conference provides some of the top players in the MLB draft. Not to mention, the SEC is typically well-represented in the College World Series.

Needless to say, it is always interesting to see which players burst onto the scene. Some of the best-of-the-best come from the southeast. It is a baseball hotbed for some of the nation’s top high school prospects and transfers.

Roll Tide Wire takes a look at 14 incoming transfers that have the potential to have a breakout season in 2024.

SEC decides on two permanent opponents in baseball starting in 2025

SEC Baseball makes huge decision on future conference opponents

The additions of the University of Texas and Oklahoma are without a shadow of a doubt great additions for the SEC. From the overall academic impact, they bring to the conference as well as being two of the most storied programs in all of college sports. That being said, their addition to the conference has not been the easiest thing in the world.

The SEC has operated with the East and West divisions for over 30 years, but with the two former Big-12 powerhouses on the way, there is a lot of maneuvering to do. For football, the conference had floated the idea of four pods consisting of four teams or realigning the divisions but neither ever came to fruition.

Baseball is a bit different because with so many teams in the conference, it is impossible to expect Alabama to play at least three games a year against all 15 of the other SEC programs. So, the SEC has announced that starting in 2025 the conference will keep two permanent opponents as a way to keep the rivalries strong within baseball. Alabama’s two permanent opponents will be Auburn and Tennessee as they should be.

Bryans was stellar at the plate during his freshman season as well. Bryans earned a .335 batting average with eight homeruns and 49 RBIs. He finished second on the tean in homeruns and RBIs.

Alabama Baseball lands Ivy league transfer pitcher Carson Ozmer

The Alabama baseball team received a commitment for the ’24 recruiting class from Penn transfer pitcher Carson Ozmer.

On Tuesday, the Alabama baseball team received some promising news regarding the future of the program. Penn transfer pitcher Carson Ozmer announced his commitment to Alabama. Interestingly enough, Ozmer will finish out his senior season at Penn before making the transition to Alabama.

In three seasons with the Quakers, Ozmer has accumulated a 2-2 record with a 2.09 ERA. Opponents have amassed a .192 batting average against Ozmer over the course of three years.

Ozmer was named an All-Ivy League Honorable Mention following his junior season. In 34 appearances, Ozmer held a 1.83 ERA while striking out 35 batters and allowing just 24 hits.

The addition of Ozmer will be a good addition to help bolster the Crimson Tide coaching staff. The dynamics of the roster are unclear at this time, so it is good to have a proven pitcher on board for the 2025 season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest regarding the Alabama baseball program.

Alabama Baseball lands Louisville transfer pitcher Greg Farone

Louisville transfer pitcher Greg Farone recently announced that he was transferring to Alabama. Farone was the named the 2022 NJCAA Player of the Year during his time at Herkimer College.

The Alabama baseball team received some good news on Wednesday. Louisville transfer pitcher Greg Farone announced that he was transferring to Alabama. He made the news official via X, formerly known as Twitter.

Farone began his college career at Herkimer College. The Generals compete in Division III of the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). Farone spent two seasons in Herkimer.

He finished his junior college career with a 13-0 record and a 1.83 ERA. In 103 innings pitched, Farone allowed just 21 earned runs.

Following his sophomore season, Farone was named the NJCAA Division III Player of the Year and the NJCAA Division III Pitcher of the Year. Not to mention, Farone also helped the Generals win its first national title in program history.

After the conclusion of his junior college years, Farone would transfer to Louisville. He chose the Cardinals over Mississippi State and Clemson. In one season at Louisville, Farone finished with a 1-4 record and a 4.80 ERA. He was primarily used as a reliever but did make six starts for the Cardinals. In 50.2 innings of work, he allowed 27 earned runs while striking out 65 batters.

Farone is a lefty that can be used as a starter or as a reliever. That is something that the Alabama coaching staff was looking for in the transfer portal. Farone will bring versatility and experience to the Alabama bullpen in 2023.

Alabama Baseball lands Texas transfer pitcher Pierce George

The Alabama baseball team received some good news on Tuesday. Texas transfer pitcher Pierce George announced that he was transferring to Alabama.

The Alabama baseball program received some good news on Tuesday. Texas transfer pitcher Pierce George announced that he was transferring to Alabama on X, formerly known as Twitter.

George was ranked as the No. 170 overall prospect in the 2022 recruiting class by Perfect Game. At Lake Travis High School, George played both shortstop and pitcher. Therefore, he was recruited as a two-way player by the Longhorns coaching staff.

Upon arriving in Austin, George was strictly listed as a pitcher. During his freshman season, he made three appearances. George pitched two innings while allowing two hits and three earned runs.

During the offseason, several of Alabama’s pitchers were drafted different MLB organizations. With that said, George could find himself on the mound sooner rather than later.

FSS Plus senior analyst Joe Doyle reported that George had a mid-80 slider with a 99 mile per hour fastball. At 6-foot-7 and 240 pounds, that is extremely rare. It will be interesting to see if George can develop into becoming a dependable arm on the mound for the Crimson Tide in 2023.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama baseball program and its involvement in the transfer portal.
