Bills place LB A.J. Klein on Reserve/COVID-19 list

#Bills place LB A.J. Klein on Reserve/COVID-19 list ahead of tonight’s #Patriots contest:

The Buffalo Bills made another pregame transaction involving COVID-19.

The team announced on Monday just hours before hosting the New England Patriots that linebacker AJ Klein was placed on the team’s Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Klein’s vaccination status is unclear, but he will not play against the Patriots (8-4). If unvaxxed, he is out for 10 days. If vaccinated, Klein needs two negative tests for the virus 24 hours apart before he can return.

While Klein is traditionally used as a backup to linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano in Buffalo’s nickel defense, occasionally against run-heavy teams all three will play.

New England poses one of those threats but now having Klein on the field with Edmunds and Milano is off the table.

The Bills (7-4) only just removed defensive tackle Star Lotulelei and rookie offensive lineman Spencer Brown from the designation last week.

In a corresponding move, Buffalo elevated two players from their practice squad ahead of the Pats meeting.

Those two are linebacker Joe Giles-Harris and defensive tackle Eli Ankou.

Bills’ Tremaine Edmunds out vs. Jets, AJ Klein to start

#Bills’ Tremaine Edmunds out vs. Jets, AJ Klein to start:

The Buffalo Bills will be without the quarterback of their defense in Week 10.

Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds will not play vs. the New York Jets due to injury.

Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott confirmed that via video conference on Friday. The coach added his team will miss the consistent leadership Edmunds brings each game.

“The continuity piece is real,” McDermott said.

AJ Klein will replace Edmunds in the lineup. The versatile Klein has replaced Matt Milano due to injury in the past.

Klein last started a game for the Bills (5-3) in Week 5 against the Kansas City Chiefs this season for Milano.

Edmunds has a hamstring injury.

In Week 9’s Bills loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Edmunds played every snap on defense. He was not listed on the injury report at all until Wednesday.

Along with Edmunds being out, running Zack Moss has yet to clear the concussion protocol, per McDermott.

On a positive note, tight end Dawson Knox (hand), rookie offensive lineman Spencer Brown (back), and cornerback Taron Johnson (concussion) are expected to play vs. the Jets. Brown and Knox have had full practices this week.

Bills Wire will provide the full final injury reports for the Bills and Jets ahead of their upcoming game when they are made available.

Stock up, stock down following the Bills’ win over the Chiefs

Stock up, stock down following the #Bills’ win over the #Chiefs:

The Buffalo Bills defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in convincing fashion on Sunday Night Football.

Following the 38-20 win, here is Bills Wire’s Week 5 stock report:

Stock up, stock down following the Bills’ win over the Texans

Stock up, stock down following the #Bills’ win over the #Texans (via @mckennamiddle):

The Buffalo Bills advanced to 3-1 on the season with a dominant 40-0 victory over the inept Houston Texans.

It was a wet and rainy day in Western New York that saw plenty of sloppy play from the away team. Outside of an interception from Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen and a poor red zone possession, the Bills played a flawless game.

With the Kansas City Chiefs on the horizon let’s look back at who played well and who didn’t against the Houston Texans in this week’s stock report:

Brandon Beane opens up on Buffalo Bills COVID situation

Brandon Beane opens up on #Bills COVID situation (via @NateMendelson):

The Buffalo Bills had a vaccinated trainer test positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday. As a result, four close contacts were sent away from the team facility.

Vernon Butler, Gabriel Davis, Star Lotulelei, and Cole Beasley will be away from the Bills for up to five days due to the NFL’s health and safety protocol. The Bills are hoping no other positives will show up in the coming days.

The trainer did not feel they had COVID when they tested positive per general manager Brandon Beane via video conference. Currently, they are fine and experiencing minor symptoms.

The Bills sent an additional two players home out of precaution by the Buffalo staff. Matt Milano and A.J. Klein were pulled as the league completed its interviews for who could be a close contact.

With interviews taking time, Butler was on the practice field Tuesday. Beane says they were surprised to see him as a close contact and would not have practiced if they knew. Butler did test negative on Tuesday.

“These are the rules that are currently agreed upon by the NFLPA and league office so we deal with it and now all understand them,” Beane said. “I’m glad it’s the preseason and hopefully we won’t have a lot of this in the regular season.”

The league safety protocols differ for those vaccinated and unvaccinated. Those who are vaccinated test once every two weeks while those who are not must test every day. Beane is unsure where the Bills vaccination rate stands with recent roster moves. Buffalo surpassed the 80% threshold at the start of training camp. He doesn’t know if they’re still above it.

The Bills had a push at the beginning of training camp to reach the threshold but rates have leveled off. There is encouragement some players could get it now that the Pfizer vaccine is FDA approved.

“As long as it’s not a mandatory thing, I think most teams are going to have a number of players (unvaccinated),” Beane said. “Maybe some players are waiting on that, I don’t have a specific number of players who said ‘hey if the FDA approves this I’ll get it’ maybe some will look at this and say ‘hey I don’t want to deal with it.’ I’m not sure all of them will, time will tell.”

Bills players have already seen how the virus could affect them and their team. Left tackle Dion Dawkins returned to the practice field last week after covid put him in the hospital for four days. Beane reiterated that no one is exempt and the virus doesn’t discriminate against anyone.

The four close contacts aren’t automatically out of playing in Saturday’s final preseason game against the Packers. The five-day clock from the close contact period could have started two-to-three days ago for some players. Beane did not specify which.

Until then, the Bills will hope there are no other positive cases within the organization.

Report: Matt Milano, A.J. Klein sent home via COVID protocol, Bills list up to 5

Report: Matt Milano, A.J. Klein sent home via COVID protocol as well, #Bills list up to 5 players:

(Update: 12:07 p.m.): Speaking via press conference, Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier has confirmed that Milano, Klein and Lotulelei will not practice on Tuesday. He did not mention the reasoning being COVID-related but said the team will update the situation at some point later in the day.

Previous coverage:

The list of Buffalo Bills players sent home from the team’s facility on Monday because of a COVID-19 safety protocol has reportedly grown to five.

According to New York Daily News NFL reporter Pat Leonard, linebackers Matt Milano and AJ Klein are the latest additions to the designation. Leonard initially was the first to report on players being sent home in Orchard Park:

Through reports, the first three players said to be sent home by the Bills because of the safety protocol were defensive tackle Star Lotulelei and wide receivers Cole Beasley and Gabriel Davis.

The list all five are reportedly on is one specifically for unvaccinated players in the NFL.

Via the original report, Beasley and Davis tested negative for COVID-19 on Monday. However, the two were deemed to be in close contract with a training staff member on the Bills staff who did test positive for the virus.

It appears that Lotulelei, Milano and Klein were as well.

Because theses players are not vaccinated, they must now go into a safety protocol for five days while continually testing negative for COVID-19 before they can join their teammates once again.

This is the third report of Bills players being added to the designation. Bills Wire will continue to follow the topic as it unfolds. Check back for future updates.

PFF pegs Kevin Pierre-Louis as free agent target for Bills

LB Kevin Pierre-Louis pegged as free agent target for Buffalo Bills in 2021 by Pro Football Focus.

In regard to linebackers and the upcoming offseason for the Bills, the focus is Matt Milano… but it’s complicated.

Due to the salary cap reportedly dropping somewhere between $180-185 million in 2020, it has long been an uphill battle for Buffalo in terms of re-signing Milano, a pending free agent.

A recent report suggests he’ll test the free agent market as well, so things have only gone from bad to worse.

If Milano does depart the Bills when free agency begins in March, they’ll need a replacement. If that guy filling the shoes is a free agent, Pro Football Focus suggests Kevin Pierre-Louis as the man for the job.

Here’s how PFF recently reasoned that:

Pierre-Louis has shown in his time on the field over the last two seasons that he can cover, earning a 91.0 coverage grade in 2019 and an 83.9 coverage grade in a larger role with the Washington Football Team this past season. His addition would help mask some of the coverage ability lost at the position with Milano.

Milano’s situation comes down to dollars and cents. Spotrac estimates his value on the open market at $13.8M per season. If the cap does land between $180-185M as reports suggest, the Bills’ current cap number is right in that range, so keeping Milano would be unlikely.

On Pierre-Louis, it remains to be seen how much he commands on the market. The 30-year-old had a better coverage grade than Milano in 2020, but the rest of his numbers left something to be desired. Perhaps Buffalo could roll with a rotation of Pierre-Louis and AJ Klein next season until a long-term solution can be found?

The money Pierre-Louis would land is unknown, but it certainly will be less than Milano. He signed a one-year, $3M deal with the Football Team a year ago and it was the first time in his career he made double-digit starts (11) in a season. Maybe he has earned more than $3M like he got on the market a year ago, but he won’t push $13.8M like Milano.

Overall, Pierre-Louis had 56 tackles in 13 games played, including three for loss, two passes defended, a forced fumble and a sack.

AJ Klein says Bills look forward to possible Chiefs rematch

Buffalo Bills LB AJ Klein on potential rematch in NFL playoffs vs. Kansas City Chiefs.

The Buffalo Bills run a very tight football operation in Orchard Park. The center of it is head coach Sean McDermott.

While not done in the grumpy Bill Belichick manner, who Buffalo visits next week in New England, McDermott will often dust off a similar idea as the Patriots’ bench boss.

One game at a time, only worrying about your next opponent, etc.

One Bills (11-3) player went a bit off script recently, though. The Going Deep Podcast via Barstool Sports had Buffalo linebacker AJ Klein on as a guest on Thursday, Klein looked much further ahead than Week 16’s Monday Night Football meeting vs. the Pats. Not even to the Bills’ season finale against the Miami Dolphins.

Klein discussed a game that, as things currently sit, would only occur in the AFC Championship. Bills vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to Klein, guys in the locker room think about it as well. A possible trip to the Super Bowl isn’t a reason why. The biggest reason involves a bit of revenge.

Earlier this season, the Chiefs topped the Bills 26-17. Since then, Buffalo has only lost one other game, which was because of a prayer of a pass by Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray. Klein said he isn’t alone in wanting Round 2.

“I feel like when we go back to that game, I don’t even remember when that or what week that was… we didn’t play our best football. I thought we had a good game plan going in… limit (Patrick) Mahomes’ big-play ability over the top and make them run the ball on us,” Klein said. “They shifted and they attacked us and at the end of the day and we didn’t play well enough to win the game.”

“I look forward to and I’m pretty sure I can say a lot of us look forward to that possible rematch,” Klein added.

That’s quite the type of mention by the Bills defender that we don’t often get from this locker room. While some might view it as a bit of a jinx, it does has a refreshing side, too.

Clearly making the postseason and winning the AFC East isn’t that high of a bar for them. They want much more, and as long as this is used in a motivational manner, there’s not a thing wrong with this approach.

Bills at Broncos: 7 things to watch for and a prediction

Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos things to watch for and prediction ahead of Week 15.

The Buffalo Bills under Sean McDermott & Co. have had a knack for being streak-busters. Another can end on Saturday as they head to Denver to take on the Broncos.

If the Bills (10-3) do beat the Broncos (5-8), an AFC East title winning banner can be hung at Bills Stadium for the first time since 1995. Some players on the team, including quarterback Josh Allen, weren’t even born yet in ’95.

Is Saturday the time? We’ll get to that in our prediction at the end, but on your scroll down there, here are seven things to watch for (& that prediction) ahead of Week 15’s Bills-Steelers meeting:
