San Diego State finished the regular season with a 13-3 loss to Air Force on Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.

The two teams fought for better seeding in a bowl game and the Falcons came out on top. It was a low-scoring contest that Air Force took advantage of early.

Air Force running back Brad Roberts capped off a methodical rushing drive with a two-yard rushing touchdown at the 12:27 mark in the first quarter. The first half did not feature much more scoring outside of Roberts’ touchdown.

The Aztecs were unable to find the end zone in the opening half. Air Force’s defense held San Diego State to 76 yards of offense in the first half.

The Falcons did not score again for the remainder of the first two quarters, but Roberts went into halftime with 123 rushing yards on 20 carries. His longest rush was for 63 yards in the first quarter. Air Force led 7-0 at the end of the second quarter.

Matthew Dapore nailed a field goal from 30 yards to extend Air Force’s lead to seven points, 10-3, with 12:04 left in the third quarter. San Diego State responded by getting in field goal position, which set up Jack Browning for a 26-yard field goal with nine minutes left in the third. San Diego State trailed Air Force, 10-3.

With 2:25 left in the third quarter, Dapore missed his second field goal of the night from 44 yards. The Air Force lead remained 10-3 over San Diego State. Dapore made up for his two misses when he gave Air Force a 13-3 lead with 9:03 to go in the fourth quarter.

San Diego State quarterback Jalen Mayden helped move the ball down the field late in the fourth quarter, but he was intercepted in the end zone with 1:40 left in the game.

Air Force held onto the 13-3 road win in Week 13. San Diego State ended the regular season with a 7-5 record. On Sunday, Dec. 4, San Diego State will find out its bowl game future for the 2022 bowl season.

Why Air Force Will Win

Can San Diego State beat anyone who’s good?

It came up with a late somewhat-miracle drive to beat Toledo back in September, and it collapsed after having Fresno State all but buried, and that’s been about it. San Jose State is about as close as it gets to a strong victory.

Now the offense that’s been able to perk up over the last month has to deal with a real defense.

Air Force leads the nation in time of possession with the offense giving the D a whole lot of rest. It shows – the defense is third in the nation allowing 263 yards per game.

The formula continues to be simple. Run, run some more, win third downs, let the defense stuff the run, and everything else works from there.

San Diego State does a lot of things right – for all the ripping on the lack of great wins, it was an onside kick recovery away from probably playing in the Mountain West title game – but it’s awful offensively on third downs.

That’s going to be a problem, but …

Why San Diego State Will Win

Can Air Force run on a defense that’s good?

It’s fun ground game might work on just about everyone, but it failed to get to 200 yards against Boise State and Wyoming – Air Force lost both of them.

It’s extremely simple. When Air Force runs for over 300 yards and dominates to the tempo, it’s 6-0 with six double-digit wins. When it doesn’t get to 300 it’s 2-3 with the two victories coming in low scoring fights with Army and Navy.

San Diego State’s defense had one really, really, really bad half against the run – it got ripped through by Boise State in a 35-13 loss. Other than that – giving up 316 rushing yards – it hasn’t allowed more than 175 yards to anyone else, and that includes Utah.

It hasn’t allowed more than 100 yards on the ground in four of the last five games.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Air Force is 6-1 at home and 2-2 away from Colorado Springs. The ground game will have its moments, but the defense will have to deal with a red-hot Jalen Mayden, a far more confident Aztec offense, and a run defense that will hold its own.

This will be a good battle between the two tough teams that need to control the clock. Mayden and the San Diego State passing game will be the difference.

Colorado State fell to Wyoming last week 14-13 in a heartbreaker. The Rams beat themselves more than the Cowboys beat them. They got a good start with a Tory Horton punt return touchdown. But then couldn’t finish off drives. They had a couple opportunities go to waste and it cost them.

This week, the Rams head south to Colorado Springs to face Troy Calhoun and the Air Force Falcons. Haaziq Daniels and Brad Roberts lead the way in the Falcons triple option offense. Air Force won the Commander-in-Chief’s trophy two weeks ago and are looking to finish the season strong.

Now onto some keys to victory for the Rams.

Three Keys to a colorado state victory

1. Maintain Your Assignment

The toughest thing about Air Force is they’re going to do the same thing over and over. They know, you know it, and the fans know it. What has to happen on the defense is maintaining the assignment given. You cannot freelance against this offense or they will burn you.

Defensive lineman are going to get cut. Linebackers are going to have to take on offensive lineman almost every play. It does not matter, you stay on your assignment for 60 minutes. The Rams know the plan, now they need to execute no matter how hard it hurts.

2. Stop Trying to Force Things

Tory Horton is one of the best athletes on this Colorado State squad. Last week against Wyoming, he tried to do too much. He caught a deep ball before halftime and tried to score a touchdown when he could’ve gone down and CSU could’ve called a timeout to get a field goal before half.

Clay Millen is guilty of this at times too. He holds onto the ball too long, he doesn’t move in the correct direction in the pocket, and he tends to force throws into spaces he shouldn’t. They are doing their best with the season they’ve had, but they need to breathe for a minute and think situationally, especially against Air Force when you might not have the ball that often.

3. Finish Strong

This key is in terms of both the game and the season. The Rams need to finish their drives on offense with points, they need to finish drives on defense with a stop, and they need to finish the season on a high note. You can see the potential this offense has, it just hasn’t fully come together yet.

Both sides of the ball have had their shine at times this season. The offense has come together these past few weeks. The defense has been tremendous in conference play, giving up 22.5 points and 351.7 yards per game, after giving up 41 points and 414.3 yards per game in non-conference play. Now they just need to finish.

what will happen

Colorado State hasn’t beaten Air Force since 2015, they’ve come within single digits twice since then too. Neither of those facts is probably going to change this week. The Rams have shown improvement as the season has gone on, but Air Force is just too strong and too disicplined to given an inch against CSU.

Final Score: Air Force 38, Colorado State 17

Why Colorado State Will Win

The run defense hasn’t been bad.

The wins and success aren’t there, but to have any shot of hanging with Air Force the defensive front has to avoid getting ripped to shreds. That might happen – Air Force has the best rushing attack in the nation – but the Rams have allowed fewer than 150 yards in three of the last four games.

Meanwhile, the passing game has cranked it up with two of its best games of the year – it’s going to stretch the Air Force secondary a bit – but …

Bowl Projections | 10 Best Picks Against the Spread

Why Air Force Will Win

The Air Force ground game really is just that good. It’s not slowing down.

It’s coming off its fifth 400-yard rushing day of the year after rolling through New Mexico for 421 yards and four scores averaging six yards per carry.

Yeah, Colorado State’s defense hasn’t been bad lately, but Boise State was able to run well, Utah State averaged over five yards per carry, and it hasn’t seen anything like it’s about to deal with.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Air Force will be Air Force at home.

It’s a local battle – just 130 miles between the two schools – but that won’t matter. The Falcons will run, and run some more, controlling the clock from the start and keeping the Ram passing game from going off.

New Mexico vs Air Force Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

New Mexico has enough of a defense to make this a game.

The offense might not be anything special, but the defense does a great job on third downs, the front isn’t bad at getting hammered on, and that O that has plenty of issues at least controls the clock.

The Lobo pass defense is mostly the problem, but Air Force is dead last in the country at throwing, but …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why Air Force Will Win

Yeah, that New Mexico offense doesn’t do much of anything.

It’s dead last in the nation in total O – it’s been able to come up with 300 yards just once against FBS teams – and it doesn’t have the ability to throw to get back in the game if needed.

New Mexico hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in the last seven games.

The Lobo run defense might be good so far this year, but it hasn’t helped up against the teams that can actually do it. By the way …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Air Force leads the nation in rushing.

It wasn’t able to do much against Boise State and it wasn’t great last week against Army, and it still averages 324 yards per game. The Falcons will take control early on with a few scores, and New Mexico won’t have an answer.

Boise State vs Air Force Game Preview

Why Boise State Will Win

Oh, you think you have a running game, Air Force?

Boise State was doing nothing, the team crashed against UTEP and couldn’t do anything in the first half against San Diego State, and then …

Boom.

The ground game kicked in on the way to 316 rushing yards and five scores in the win. It was all followed up with 316 more yards in the win over Fresno State.

Air Force might be playing well overall, but it lost to Utah State after allowing close to 200 rushing yards, and lost to Wyoming after allowing 180. Those are the two losses.

The five wins came when the D allowed fewer than 180 yards on the ground.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Air Force Will Win

Oh, really, you think you have a running game, Boise State?

Air Force not only leads the nation with 360 rushing yards per game, it averages almost 90 yards more per game than the No. 3 rushing team – Ole Miss. Army is the only other team to be over 300 and it averages 317.

Even when it’s not working it’s still cranking out yards in chunks and dominating the action. Boise State might be among the best teams in the country at coming up with third down stops, but and it might lead the Mountain West against the run, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, Boise State leads the Mountain West against the run and it amazing at coming up with third down stops.

Here’s the problem with that. The Broncos allowed more than 100 rushing yards twice, and they lost. They’re going to allow over 100 yards to Air Force, but the difference now is the rise of the offense under offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.

The Bronco offense figured it out to go along with the amazing defense.

Don’t blink – with these two ground games keeping things moving this should last about 90 minutes.

Tale of the Tape: Starting Quarterbacks – Drew Pyne vs. Brumfield/Friel

Quite a complicated QB picture.

Notre Dame and UNLV will have an interesting quarterback situation overall. [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] remains the starter for the Irish in spite of all the struggles he’s had to go through this season. Of course, the word “struggles” has to be used very loosely because there have been times, especially as the season has gone on, when Pyne is making real progress. Then, he has games in which he takes a step back, and those old doubts about him come creeping back.

The Rebels will come to South Bend not entirely sure who will be lining up under center for them. Doug Brumfield has been the main quarterback, but being in concussion protocol forced him to miss the Rebels’ last game against Air Force, and he remains day-to-day. The Rebels likely would turn to backup Cameron Friel if Brumfield can’t go. Still, it’s pretty obvious which quarterback gives the Rebels a better chance at victory.

Air Force vs UNLV Game Preview

Why Air Force Will Win

Which Air Force team is going to show up?

There were injury problems in the loss to Wyoming a few weeks ago, but last week it couldn’t get things moving against a mediocre Utah State D in a 34-27 loss.

But if and when it gets going, no one is stopping what’s coming.

UNLV couldn’t handle the San Jose State running game last week in a 40-7 loss, and now it gets a jacked up Air Force attack that should be able to attack the outside of the Rebel defense and rip off big things.

Air Force still leads the nation in rushing, it’s great at controlling the clock, and it holds the ball for close to 36 minutes per game. However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why UNLV Will Win

Yeah, the Air Force offense was great against Northern Iowa, Colorado, and Nevada. Those three aren’t exactly Georgia defensively.

UNLV might not have been able to get anything going against San Jose State, but the pressure from the defensive front should at least be enough to get into the Air Force backfield.

Make the Falcon offense rush, hope for takeaways. Air Force has given it up multiple times in four of the six games, and UNLV is +8 on the year in turnover margin.

The problem, though, is …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Air Force will always have the ball.

UNLV’s defense is great on third downs, but the offense isn’t. Time of possession hasn’t been a problem, but Air Force is so good at milking the clock and making defenses panic a bit.

Air Force might not stomp on the Rebel D, but it’ll make up for the problems last week against Utah State by owning the clock in the fourth quarter to get out alive.

Air Force vs Utah State Game Preview

Why Air Force Will Win

Can Utah State stop the run? No? Okay, good luck with that.

The Aggies actually did a good job holding down BYU’s ground attack in a 38-26 loss last week, and they kept UNLV from going off, but Alabama, UConn, Weber State all had a good time running.

Air Force leads the nation in rushing by over a 100 more yards per game than No. 3 Kansas State and by 62 more yards than No. 2 Army. By its own standards it had an impossible time getting going in the 13-10 win over Navy, but it did enough to get out alive.

Now the attack should start to roll again, Utah State – along with the issues against the run – is getting hit with too many flags, it’s not forcing turnovers, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Utah State Will Win

Is it possible that teams are starting to figure out Air Force’s fastball?

Some outside pieces were missing against Wyoming, but the Falcons couldn’t get going in Laramie and everything looked like it was running in mud against Navy.

Granted, in between was a monster performance against Navy, but again, Utah State hasn’t been that bad at keeping the big runs to a minimum lately.

The wins might not be there, but the offense hasn’t been bad over the last few games, it’s been versatile enough to keep things interesting, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

Utah State hasn’t been playing poorly, but the 13 turnovers over the last three games have been an absolute killer. Interceptions are the problem, but a few fumbles have been sprinkled in, too, for the nation leader in giveaways..

It doesn’t help that the Aggie defense hasn’t taken the ball aways in the last two games.

Air Force will go Air Force. It’ll hang on to the ball for 40 minutes, it’ll control the game, and it’ll run for close to 400 yards.
