Five Aggies receive 2024 NFL Scouting Combine invites

Texas A&M will be well represented at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine with five invitees

The NFL season is over, and the Kansas City Chiefs have been crowned the champions. That means the focus will now shift to the 2024 NFL Draft, which will occur in late spring. The major event everyone is looking forward to will be the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine scheduled for February 26 – March 4 in Indianapolis.

The NFL Combine has invited 321 NFL hopefuls to participate in the six-day event, where they will test and interview with all 32 teams represented. Texas A&M will have five Aggies in attendance to make another impression before the draft to make a pro team.

Last year, De’Von Achane, Antonio Johnson, and Jaylon Jones received an invite to the combine and all were selected in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Senior Bowl Q&A with Texas A&M WR Ainias Smith

An exclusive interview with Texas A&M WR Ainias Smith at the 2024 Senior Bowl

Today, some of the best eligible players for the 2024 NFL Draft will compete in Mobile, Alabama in the Reeses’ Senior Bowl.

This is the prospects’ final chance to make an impression on NFL scouts before transitioning to preparation for the NFL combine. It comes after a long week of practices and learning to play with a brand new group of teammates.

Texas A&M wide receiver Ainias Smith had 53 catches for 795 yards and 2 touchdowns his year to lead the Aggies air attack. The 5-foot-9, 190-pound offensive weapon is one of many players who will hope to impress scouts during the event today.

Smith himself confirmed that he met this week with the Houston Texans and Texans Wire’s own John Crumpler had the opportunity to speak with him about his week of practice and overall transition to the NFL:

John Crumpler, Texans Wire: What does it mean to be at the Senior Bowl?

Ainias Smith, Texas A&M WR: It’s everything. I’m definitely honored and blessed to be here, going up against all this great competition and it’s been a honor just be able to meet a lot of new coaches and get the interview process, going and whatnot, meeting new coaches meeting and, I guess you can say, getting introduced to new play calls and different schemes and how I’ll probably be used in the NFL. So definitely an honor and a blessing for sure.

JC: How did you feel about your first two days of practice in Mobile?

AS: I mean, I feel pretty good. First day, I feel like I’ll say I was dipping my feet in the water, getting back to putting on the pads. Today, I feel I came out a whole lot better, a lot stronger, more energy. I feel like the team in general came out with a lot more energy so it was smooth for sure.

JC: What kind of player and kind of person is an NFL team getting when you walk into that locker room in May?

AS: You’re getting somebody that’s dedicated, never gonna quit. Somebody that’s not only dedicated to the game, but dedicated to the process, you know, always trying to enjoy the process. Never going to, like I said, shy away from competition, never gonna quit. So you’re gonna get somebody that wants to be successful and going to help the team believe or help lead the team to have success.

JC: This time of year NFL coaches watch a lot of film. What’s one play that you hope coaches see on your tape to fully understand what you bring to the table?

AS: I hope they look back at 2020 when we were going up against Florida. I remember I had made a block. I forgot who I made the block on but I remember taking his helmet off. So I hope they just see the toughness in me in that play and continue to watch all the rest of my film.

JC: What kind of future role do you see yourself playing for an NFL team?

AS: That’s a great question. I’ll probably say a little bit of receiver, a little bit of running back, a little bit of special teams. Whether that’s on punt return, kick return, being a gunner, being on kickoff. Whatever they really need me to be. I’ll just say an all-around athlete for sure.

How to watch the Texas A&M participants in the Reese’s Senior Bowl

Here are all the details and how to watch this weekend’s Reese’s Senior Bowl, which includes three former Texas A&M standouts.

As they say, the NFL Draft starts in Mobile, Alabama, as the annual Reese’s Senior Bowl is set to take place this Saturday, with plenty on the line for each participant’s professional football future. All 32 NFL Team representatives will attend to watch one of the more talent-rich rosters in the event’s history.

For Texas A&M, three players, including wide receiver Ainias Smith, defensive lineman McKinnley Jackson, and offensive lineman Layden Robinson, will represent the program as the three veterans looking to make their mark at the next level.

Outside of the Aggie representatives, notable players such as the quarterback trio of Michael Penix Jr, Bo Nix, and Sam Hartman will all attempt to wow scouts with the National Team. At the same time, the offensive line and defensive line rotations on both sides are chock-full of future first, second and third-round picks in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.

Here is how you can watch the game for all three Texas A&M players this Saturday.

Ainias Smith is making the most of his time at the Reese’s Senior Bowl

Aggie receiver is showing what he can bring to next level as he participates in the Reese’s Senior Bowl

Texas A&M’s all-purpose athlete Ainias Smith is at the Resse’s Senior Bowl, showing the scouts across all the professional leagues what he can bring to the game at the next level. After his junior season was cut short due to injury, Smith returned to College Station for one more hurrah, and it was a productive decision.

Smith led the team in receptions and yards while catching passes from three different quarterbacks throughout the season. Wide receiver is just one part of his game; the toughness and elusiveness allowed him to line up all over the field. He has 72 career carries for 405 yards and 82 punt returns for 836 yards, with an underrated skill as a blocker. Smith believes in his ability to help in the run-blocking game and does it willingly, as he told John Crumpler at the Senior Bowl.

“I made a block, I forgot who I made the block on but I remember taking his helmet off. I hope they see the toughness in me.”

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

It’s anyone’s guess where Smith will end up in the draft, but with the league favoring the offensive side of the ball more and more each year, someone with Smith’s skill set will be in demand. He already confirmed that he has an interview lined up with the Houston Texans this week.

There are a few days left for Smith to make an impression, and we wish him luck and look forward to watching him play in the game on February 3rd.

Four Aggies selected in Pro Football Networks’ newest 2024 NFL Mock Draft

In Pro Football Networks’ newest 2024 NFL Mock Draft, four Aggies were selected, including stand-out linebacker Edgerrin Cooper.

Surprising to some, but Texas A&M has over 25 active NFL players coached by three separate coaching staffs over the last decade-plus, and leading into April’s 2024 NFL Draft, several Aggie veterans are deemed to hear their names called, including linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, and wide receiver Ainias Smith.

While a bevy of NFL Mock Drafts will continue to be released across the internet for the next three months, Pro Football Focus’ Ian Cummings, one of the hardest-working analysts in the industry, released his newest 7-round Mock Draft last weekend, which included four Aggies selected across six of seven rounds.

While Cooper, Smith, and safety Demani Richardson have the most realistic shot at being selected sooner rather than later, veteran offensive lineman Layden Robinson could be a late steal for guard-needy teams.

Even though Texas A&M, in now former head coach Jimbo Fisher’s final season at the helm, finished 7-6, the Aggies’ have continued to develop talent on both sides of the ball year after year, and under new HC Mike Elko, expect even more players to be selected in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Here are the four players Ian Cummings predicted to will be selected in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.

Texas A&M will have three Aggies participating in the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl

Texas A&M will be well represented in the Senior Bowl, sending three Aggies that will have a chance to raise their draft profile.

The season might be over but there is still football to be played. Several all-star games will be played over the next month with everything from the Polynesian Bowl to the Reese’s Senior Bowl. While Texas A&M will have representation in both of those games, we are going to touch on the Aggie seniors who received their invitations to the senior bowl near the end of 2023.

Of the four Aggies invited three accepted and will take part in the week-long event that will take place on NFL Network on February 3rd in Mobile, Alabama. Texas A&M fans will be able to tune in and watch Ainias Smith, Layden Robinson, and McKinnley Jackson compete with Edgerrin Cooper opting to pass.

This event will allow these three the opportunity to raise their draft stock as this all-star game is widely considered the premier place to evaluate talent and personalities firsthand before the draft starts. Every NFL team will have representatives onsite and the media will have round-the-clock analysis for each day.

One of the most important events on the National Football League calendar is the Senior Bowl. Held the week after the conference championship games, it is the true beginning of the NFL draft cycle.

Not only do scouts and analysts like us get to see over 100 draft prospects in one place competing against each other, but it’s also an opportunity for analysts and personnel alike to get together and have discussions about a number of topics.

As we look forward to this year’s Senior Bowl, managing editor Tyler Forness will be there in person to break everything down.

We will be breaking down each position group and what to look for throughout the week. Here is the wide receiver position.

Pro Football Network sends Vikings DB — not QB — in latest mock draft

Cam Mellor of Pro Football Network sends the Minnesota Vikings some defensive help in the first round, and a host of other players in his latest 7-round mock draft

In somewhat of a surprise, Pro Football Network’s Cam Mellor is going against the grain with his selection for the Minnesota Vikings and sending them some help in the secondary rather than at quarterback. In his latest mock draft, Mellor has the Vikings selecting former Iowa Hawkeyes cornerback Cooper DeJean with the 11th pick.

Here’s what Mellor has to say about the selection:

Iowa cornerbacks are always going to be pro-ready, and that’s just what Cooper DeJean presents for the Minnesota Vikings. A late-season injury forced him out of the Big Ten Championship, but DeJean should be ready to go by minicamp.

He’s a speedster on the outside with plenty of length and burst. DeJean comes fully equipped with elite ball skills and a special teams ability that rivals everyone in this class.

DeJean is an interesting pick for the Vikings here, especially with how the board fell in this scenario. While the Vikings could certainly benefit from help in their secondary, conventional wisdom would say that quarterback is the more pressing need — especially if Kirk Cousins isn’t going to be back healthy next season.

Mellor continued on after the first round and projected the entirety of the 2024 NFL Draft. Here’s who he tabbed for the Vikings in rounds 2 through 7:

The Senior Bowl invites have been sent out and the Aggie will be represented well

The Reese’s Senior Bowl invites have been sent out and the Aggies will be well represented

The regular season is over and bowl season is approaching. While the Aggies piece together a staff and team to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys, the Reese’s Senior Bowl has sent out their invites.

Not only did they request the presence of seniors across the NCAA, but they also named their Reese’s Senior Bowl All-American Team. You guessed it, Edgerrin Cooper was named to the All-Defensive team, and Ainias Smith was named to the All-Specialists Team as a returner.

Along with those two being invited, Layden Robinson and McKinnley Jackson were also extended the invitation. As of December 12th, Jackson, Robinson, and Smith have accepted and will be on the field in Mobile, Alabama.

To see what the Senior Bowl is all about, you can check out the information in the statement below:

The Reese’s Senior Bowl is widely regarded as the preeminent college football all-star game and the first stage in the NFL Draft process. The longest continual-running all-star game has taken place in Mobile, Alabama the past 74 years.  More than 900 NFL personnel, including key decision-makers from all 32 teams, and over 1100 media members from around the country were credentialed this year. This past April, the game produced 100 total picks for the third straight year, representing 40 percent of the entire NFL draft, including 40 selected on the first two days.

Congratulations to the invites and we wish them the best when they compete on February 3rd on the NFL network.

Texas A&M WR Ainias Smith will enter the 2024 NFL Draft

Ainias Smith’s college career will come to an end as he declares for the 2024 NFL draft.

Today officially marks the end of an exciting era in Texas A&M football. Senior wide receiver Ainias Smith announced via social media that he will be entering the NFL draft.

There was some question after his season-ending injury if Smith would rehab and, in the draft, or return for another season. Thankfully, for the team and staff the one we call Sub-0 returned and had a stellar season during a trying time period. His leadership and toughness were qualities they will miss in the receiver room next year as the staff will look to fill that void.

Leading the Aggies in receiving during the 2023 season with 53 receptions, 795 yards, and two touchdowns, Smith still possessed one more year of collegiate eligibility due to his 2020 injury coupled with the 2020 Covid-inflicted season, but decided that his NFL future was imminent.

Smith finishes his incredible Aggie career with 2,812 yards and 23 touchdowns from scrimmage, and is ranked seventh in Texas A&M history in receiving yards (2,407).

We wish Ainias the best, and we can’t wait to watch him take the NFL by storm.
