Texas A&M’s all-purpose athlete Ainias Smith is at the Resse’s Senior Bowl, showing the scouts across all the professional leagues what he can bring to the game at the next level. After his junior season was cut short due to injury, Smith returned to College Station for one more hurrah, and it was a productive decision.
Smith led the team in receptions and yards while catching passes from three different quarterbacks throughout the season. Wide receiver is just one part of his game; the toughness and elusiveness allowed him to line up all over the field. He has 72 career carries for 405 yards and 82 punt returns for 836 yards, with an underrated skill as a blocker. Smith believes in his ability to help in the run-blocking game and does it willingly, as he told John Crumpler at the Senior Bowl.
“I made a block, I forgot who I made the block on but I remember taking his helmet off. I hope they see the toughness in me.”
It’s anyone’s guess where Smith will end up in the draft, but with the league favoring the offensive side of the ball more and more each year, someone with Smith’s skill set will be in demand. He already confirmed that he has an interview lined up with the Houston Texans this week.
There are a few days left for Smith to make an impression, and we wish him luck and look forward to watching him play in the game on February 3rd.
