Where Michigan football ranks in AFCA Coaches Poll after Week 4

Michigan football is moving on up. Where does it rank?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbzardvge799bm2 player_id=01f5k5y2jb3twsvdg4 image=https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Michigan football started the 2021 season unranked and managed to not only sneak into the rankings, but it was moving on up after three convincing wins to open the season.

But how would the coaches across college football view a 20-13 win over Rutgers, especially considering how inept the offense was in the second half?

In the latest AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports, the Wolverines were destined to move up considering Texas A&M, Clemson, Iowa State, and Wisconsin all lost on Saturday. Given that the maize and blue were No. 19 last week, would it be a mere move to 16 or would any of the other teams remain ahead? Or would Michigan be punished for not gaining style points, even though Iowa has yet to have a style points win and is No. 5 in the country?

Turns out, a little better than that, as Michigan football moved up to No. 14 in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll. Upcoming opponent Wisconsin dropped out of the poll completely.

Wisconsin football moves up in latest AFCA Coaches Poll

Despite being off this week, the Badgers have moved up in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll:

Despite not playing any game this weekend, Wisconsin football jumped up two spots to No. 15 in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA Today.

Fortunately for the Badgers, UCLA and Virginia Tech were both upset this weekend and dropped out of the top 15, which made the way for Wisconsin to move up. Next week will be an exciting opportunity for Wisconsin against a top 10-opponent, as they will face former Badgers’ quarterback Jack Coan and the No. 10-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Soldier Field.

Besides Ohio State that dropped one spot to No. 12, every Big Ten school moved up in this weeks’ poll. Michigan moved up six spots to No. 19 and Michigan State moved up eight spots to No. 21. Penn State moved up four spots to No. 8, while Iowa moved up a spot to No. 6.

The AFCA Coaches Poll top 10 for this week is Alabama(1), Georgia(2), Oklahoma(3), Oregon(4), Texas A&M(5), Iowa(6), Clemson(7), Penn State(8), Cincinnati(9) and Notre Dame(10).

Wisconsin will face off next against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Soldier Field on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m CDT.

The latest AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY is live and, for the first time this season, Michigan State football is firmly in the top-25, placing at No. 21 following their upset win over No. 24 Miami.

The Spartans jumped up 8 spots in the poll after beating the Canes 38-17 in a game that has opened a lot of eyes around the country. Many around the nation had MSU ranked as one of the worst teams in the Big Ten, but Mel Tucker did a fantastic job of both adding in new talent via the transfer portal and getting the most out of the players he had on the roster already to turn the program around quickly.

The Spartans will have a chance to further entrench themselves in the top-25 next weekend against Nebraska.

Wisconsin football stays put in latest AFCA Coaches Poll

Wisconsin football stays put in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll:

Even after a dominant victory against MAC opponent, Eastern Michigan, Wisconsin football has stayed put at No. 17 in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA Today.

Although there were still some miscues on offense, the Badgers offensive line looked dominant allowing the running back trio to gash Eastern Michigan for huge chunks of yardage and three touchdowns. Besides the running game, Mertz had an efficient showing going 14-17 for 141 yards. The Badgers are looking much improved ahead of their bye week and matchup at Soldier Field in Chicago with Notre Dame.

Ohio State was the only Big Ten team to fall in this weeks’ poll eight spots to No. 11 after their upset loss to Oregon, while Iowa moved up five spots to No. 7 after their victory over Iowa State. Michigan moved from unranked up to No. 25, while Penn State moved up one spot to No. 12.

The top 10 for this week includes Alabama(1), Georgia(2), Oklahoma(3), Oregon(4), Texas A&M(5), Clemson(6), Iowa(7), Cincinnati(8), Florida(9) and Notre Dame(10).

Wisconsin will have a bye week this week but will be playing the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Soldier Field on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 11:00 a.m CST.

Michigan football finally enters USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

It’s about time Michigan football gets some respect around here, I tell ya…

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbzardvge799bm2 player_id=01f5k5y2jb3twsvdg4 image=https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The resounding win in Week 1 wasn’t enough, but Week 2’s performance by Michigan football finally got the Wolverines in the good graces of the college football coaches across the country.

The maize and blue were on the outside looking in in both the preseason and after the first week of action. But with a dominant win over the formerly-ranked Washington Huskies — thought to be a solid team on both sides of the ball — Michigan changed the perception of the program after a moribund 2020 campaign.

Meanwhile, some other ranked teams faltered. Ohio State lost at home to Oregon. Texas was shellacked by unranked Arkansas in the worst loss for the Longhorns since before Tom Herman took over the program. USC had a big loss to unranked Stanford. Utah lost to BYU. Notre Dame and Miami won but struggled against perceived lesser foes.

Thus, in the post-Week 2 AFCA Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports, there were some changes, which included Michigan football finally entering the top 25. It might not be huge movement, but the Wolverines check in at No. 25 after having been previously unranked.

Wisconsin football drops out of top 15 in latest AFCA Coaches Poll

After a disappointing loss to Penn State, the Badgers have fallen out of the top 15 of the AFCA Coaches Poll:

After a disappointing loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions last Saturday, the Wisconsin Badgers have fallen two spots to No. 17 in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Although the Badgers did lose to a ranked opponent in now No. 13 Penn State, there were serious issues that emerged in the game for Wisconsin including difficulties with play calling and the overall offensive performance. The Badgers will need a better showing against MAC conference opponent Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

Besides Wisconsin, Indiana was the only other Big Ten team to drop in this weeks’ poll to unranked after a disappointing loss to the now No. 12 Iowa Hawkeyes. Penn State moved up seven spots to No. 13, while the Ohio State Buckeyes moved up one spot to No. 3 after beating Minnesota on Thursday night.

The top 10 includes Alabama(1), Georgia(2), Ohio State(3), Oklahoma(4), Texas A&M(5), Clemson(6), Notre Dame(7), Cincinnati(8), Florida(9) and Iowa State(10).

Wisconsin will face off next against the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Saturday at Camp Randall at 6:00 p.m. CST.

Heading into Arkansas week, the Longhorns have jumped up six spots in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Heading into Arkansas week, the Longhorns have jumped up six spots in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. Coming in at No. 15, they are the third highest-ranked Big 12 team in the poll behind Oklahoma (No. 4) and Iowa State (No. 10).

Oklahoma State is the only other conference foe to feature at No. 23. The Cowboys fell one spot after a narrow win over Missouri State. TCU and Kansas State received votes as well.

The latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll just dropped and Michigan State football might not be ranked, but they have already started to receive votes after their dismantling of a strong team in Northwestern on the road.

The Spartans received 33 votes, putting them right behind Florida State in the voting totals and just ahead of Kentucky. A potential win this weekend over a lowly Youngstown State squad likely won’t be enough to push them into the top-25, but a match-up against No. 24 ranked Miami the following week on the road should be enough if they are able to beat them.

Did Michigan football get ranked in Week 2 USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Did Michigan football do enough to move into the top 25 after its Week 1 win?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbzardvge799bm2 player_id=01f5k5y2jb3twsvdg4 image=https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Michigan football trounced Western Michigan to open up the 2021 college football season, but is it enough in the minds of the coaches to propel the Wolverines into the AFCA Coaches Poll?

The maize and blue were unranked in the preseason poll, but several teams in the AFCA Coaches Poll lost in Week 1, including Clemson (to Georgia), North Carolina (to unranked Virginia Tech), LSU (to UCLA), Wisconsin (to Penn State), Miami (to Alabama), Indiana (to Iowa), and Washington (to FCS-level Montana). Though Michigan beat unranked Western Michigan, it looked completely different than it had a year ago, which could give the coaches a reason to finally rank the Wolverines.

However, such was not the case.

Michigan was on the outside looking in, just two spots beneath the top 25. Future opponents include No. 3 Ohio State, No. 13 Penn State and No. 17 Wisconsin.
