Heisman Trophy Odds 2022 Week 5: CJ Stroud still on top as Adrian Martinez surges into top 5

It’s always 9AM in Manhattan, Kansas

Each week this college football season, BetFTW will take a look at the 2022 Heisman Trophy race and break down the contenders. Check back each Monday as the best college football players in the country jockey for position with both oddsmakers and bettors. Preseason odds can be found here and Week 4 here

The top of the Heisman Trophy leaderboard remains largely unchanged despite a pretty eventful week across the sport—at least as far as oddsmakers see things.

C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, Caleb Williams and Hendon Hooker all occupy the top four spots with the most notable change being Caleb Williams ascent to second-best odds at +400 behind Stroud (+150).

This is most likely due to an injury that kept Young out for most of Alabama’s victory over Arkansas as the Tide reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25.

But it’s the re-emergence of Adrian Martinez at Kansas State who captured the attention of oddsmakers after Week 5.

Let’s get into it. Odds via BetMGM.

Kansas and Kansas State on top: Best photos from the Big 12 in week 5

The best photos from the Big 12’s first full weekend of conference play in week 5.

Though things didn’t turn out well for the Oklahoma Sooners in week five, the Big 12 enjoyed several entertaining football games.

Oklahoma State and Baylor played a tightly-contested rematch of the 2021 Big 12 championship. Though the Cowboys were largely in control of this game, the Bears made it interesting in the second half.

Kansas State and Adrian Martinez kept the good times rolling with their win over Texas Tech, and Kansas stayed undefeated with their win over Iowa State. That Jayhawks win came much differently than their others this season. They won a 14-11 slugfest over a tough Cyclones defense.

With 2-0 records in Big 12 play, the two Kansas schools are on top of the conference standings through week five. Oklahoma State and TCU are right behind them at 1-0 and are undefeated this season.

Looking back at week five, here are some of the best photos from the Big 12 weekend.

Big 12 quarterback power rankings after week 5

The Big 12 has seen some really good quarterback play in the 2022 season, but who stands atop this week’s QB power rankings?

When the transfer portal took Caleb Williams, Spencer Rattler, Gerry Bohanon and Casey Thompson out of the Big 12, an opportunity arose for new quarterbacks to assert themselves as the best in the league.

The transfer portal also brought in several new starters: Dillon Gabriel at Oklahoma, Adrian Martinez at Kansas State, and J.T. Daniels at West Virginia.

Opening weekend featured just two players returning as the starting quarterback for their squad; Spencer Sanders and Jalon Daniels. Hudson Card, Max Duggan and Donovan Smith started games for their teams last year but weren’t the Week 1 starter. Injuries provided opportunities, and they’ve taken advantage, coming up with big-time performances at times through the first five weeks of the season.

With more than a month of action in the books, it’s time to update the quarterback power rankings in the Big 12.

Oklahoma State beats Baylor, Kansas remains undefeated: Big 12 Power Rankings after Week 5

Oklahoma State and Kansas continued their winning ways, and TCU gets a bump after their win over Oklahoma in this week’s power rankings.

The Big 12 conference has three undefeated teams remaining after week five. Oklahoma State knocked off 2021’s Big 12 champion Baylor. Kansas survived a last-second rally from Iowa State, and TCU dominated the Oklahoma Sooners to remain among the ranks of unbeaten teams.

Big 12 play in the early going has provided some fantastic games and storylines. The resurgent Kansas Jayhawks have earned the right to host College Gameday next Saturday when they host the TCU Horned Frogs.

Kansas State followed up their performance against Oklahoma with another strong outing, this time against Texas Tech, and the Longhorns rebounded from their loss in Lubbock with an 18-point win over West Virginia.

After week five’s action, let’s update the Big 12 power rankings, shall we?

Former Husker Adrian Martinez has big day against Texas Tech

The former Cornhusker has had an impressive performance for the second week in a row.

For the second week in a row, a former Nebraska Cornhusker put up big numbers in a conference win. Quarterback Adrian Martinez had a dominant performance against the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday afternoon.
The senior was 12 of 19 passing for 116 yards and one touchdown while running 12 times for 171 yards and three touchdowns in the Wildcat’s 37-28 victory over the Red Raiders. In the last two weeks, Martinez has run the football 33 times for 319 yards and seven touchdowns.
While at Nebraska, Martinez threw for 8,491 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions. He also rushed for another 2,301 yards with 35 touchdowns. So far this year, Martinez has thrown for 654 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions. In addition, he’s run for 469 yards and nine touchdowns. The Wildcats are now 4-1 on the year and 2-0 in the Big 12.
Next week Kansas State is in Ames, Iowa, to take on the cyclones in a night conference game.

Could upcoming quarterbacks provide fatal blow for Oklahoma’s 2022 season?

The letdown against Kansas State revealed what could be a problem for the Oklahoma Sooners over the next three weeks, according to ESPN’s Bill Connelly.

One would think after the way Oklahoma played against [autotag]Casey Thompson[/autotag] and the Nebraska Cornhuskers that the Sooners would be trending toward an elite defense this season. That thought was quickly dashed on the opening two drives in OU’s loss to Kansas State. The Wildcats putting up 14 points before the Sooners could catch their breath.

It was a startling start to the game in Brent Venables’ first Big 12 game. Perhaps more surprising was that the defense couldn’t sustain their play from a stretch where they forced three-straight three and outs. Kansas State adjusted and executed better than Oklahoma did on their way to their second straight win in Norman over the Sooners.

While the season is far from over, the loss brings into focus a potential problem for the Oklahoma Sooners as they dig into conference play. The defense may still have a long way to go.

In his assessment of the fatal fall for each of the top 16 playoff contenders, ESPN’s Bill Connelly had this to say about the Oklahoma Sooners (ESPN+). Yes, Connelly still considers the Sooners a playoff contender, even if the probability dropped significantly last week.

Brent Venables’ first OU squad was rounding into form before Kansas State came to town. The Wildcats won for the sixth time in their past 11 trips to Norman, their 41-34 victory driven primarily by the fact that they were almost always ahead of the chains. Quarterback Adrian Martinez and KSU averaged 6.7 yards per play on first down and dropped Oklahoma to 70th in success rate allowed. The Sooners aren’t allowing many big plays — aside from Martinez’s spectacular, game-clinching 55-yard scramble, anyway — but they aren’t creating uncomfortable downs and distances for opponents. It caught up to them once, and the Sooners can’t let it happen twice.

The next three quarterbacks on the OU schedule, by the way? TCU’s Max Duggan (currently ninth in Total QBR), Texas’ Hudson Card (36th) or Quinn Ewers, and Kansas’ Jalon Daniels (first). All rank ahead of Martinez. – Connelly, ESPN

Neither Hudson Card nor Max Duggan appears capable of putting together an Adrian Martinez-type performance against the Oklahoma Sooners. Yes, Duggan can run, but he’s not going to be able to break tackles in the same way Martinez did Saturday night. Both quarterbacks have the weapons on the outside and in the running game to make life incredibly difficult for the Oklahoma Sooners defense.

And then there’s Jalon Daniels, who is playing like a Heisman candidate for the Kansas Jayhawks. That doesn’t even mention Spencer Sanders who’s looked a lot like the guy who threw all over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl earlier this year.

The Big 12 schedule is chock-full of potential pitfalls for the Oklahoma Sooners. They have to improve, and that starts Saturday against TCU. A better showing against Duggan, Kendre Miller, Quentin Johnston, and the Horned Frogs would provide a huge confidence boost for the rest of the season.

Report Card: Oklahoma grades poorly in loss to Kansas State

A poor showing by Oklahoma’s defense doomed the Sooners against Kansas State in our report card from week four.

Any dreams of an undefeated season have officially come to an end as Oklahoma suffered its first loss of the season Saturday night against the Kansas State Wildcats. This has become a recurring theme over the last four years between these two.

Somehow Kansas State just finds a way to beat Oklahoma. Saturday’s loss against the Wildcats followed the same script as the previous losses. Deuce Vaughn was a thorn in Oklahoma’s side, accompanied by a breakout performance from an athletic quarterback. This time, instead of Skylar Thompson, it was Nebraska transfer, Adrian Martinez. He looked like the second-coming of former Heisman winner Cam Newton against Oklahoma. He diced them up through the air and ran for days against this Sooners’ defense.

Ultimately, Oklahoma lost the game 41-34. The story may have ended differently if they could’ve come up with two more plays on both sides of the ball. They couldn’t get out of their way. With that said, we have our final grades for the game and shared them below.

Oklahoma among USA TODAY Sports ‘losers’ from week 4 after Kansas State loss

After a disappointing loss to Kansas State, the Oklahoma Sooners were included among USA TODAY Sports’ week 4 losers.

There were few times in the Oklahoma Sooners’ 41-34 loss to Kansas State that they looked “right.” On both sides of the ball, Kansas State’s toughness and physicality frustrated the Sooners, and mental mistakes kept them from mounting a comeback in the fourth quarter.

After opening the season with three straight 30-point wins, it seemed like the Sooners were on a roll. And then Adrian Martinez played the game of his life, and we’re left scratching our heads, wondering what’s in store for the Oklahoma Sooners moving forward.

In his weekly piece over at USA TODAY Sports, Paul Myerberg included Oklahoma among his “losers” from week four. Obviously, they lost the game, but more than that, it was how they lost the game.

The Big 12 is up for grabs after the Sooners’ sloppy loss at Kansas State. While the offense was able to move ball against the Wildcats, a number of drives were stalled due to untimely penalties, mostly false starts that set the Sooners behind the chains. After an uneventful non-conference slate, Oklahoma heads out of the opening month as an enigma. Are the Sooners the best team in the conference? Will the defense reach a higher level under Brent Venables? For Oklahoma, the defeat removes all room for error with conference games ahead against Texas, No. 8 Oklahoma State and Baylor.  – Myerberg, USA TODAY Sports

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Oklahoma moving forward. They’ll have to play much better if they want to survive the Big 12 schedule and make it to the conference title game.

It starts this week on the road vs. TCU, and then Oklahoma will return to the DFW Metroplex for the Red River Showdown.

As Myerberg says, there’s no room for error for the Sooners for the remainder of 2022. Time to rise to the pressure and embrace the strain.

Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Longhorns fall: Big 12 power rankings after week 4

It was a tough week for Oklahoma and Texas, so how far did they fall in this week’s Big 12 power rankings?

It was a rough week for the two teams that will be leaving the Big 12 in the near future as Texas and Oklahoma both dropped their first conference game of the season.

The Longhorns carried a 10-point lead into halftime but were unable to stave off Donovan Smith and the Red Raiders in overtime. The Sooners were beaten by a dominant performance from Adrian Martinez, thrusting the Kansas State Wildcats back into the conference title conversation.

The Kansas Jayhawks improved to 4-0 on the season and are just one of three teams in the Big 12 still undefeated. They’ve played one more game than TCU and Oklahoma State. With the Horned Frogs hosting Oklahoma and Oklahoma State traveling to Waco to face the Baylor Bears, it’s conceivable that the Jayhawks, who host Iowa State, could be the lone remaining undefeated team in the conference after week five.

Week four had several upsets and close games on the Big 12 schedule. How do the teams stack up in this week’s power rankings after week four?

Oklahoma suffers sharp fall in USA TODAY Sports Coaches poll after Kansas State loss

The Oklahoma Sooners fell out of the top 10 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after losing to Kansas State.

Not unexpected, the Oklahoma Sooners took a tumble in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll after their 41-34 loss to the Kansas State Wildcats. The Sooners fell from No. 6 to No. 16 after the upset loss at the hands of the Wildcats.

It was Oklahoma’s third loss in four years and second straight home loss to Chris Kleiman’s Wildcats.

The Sooners fell behind early in the game as Adrian Martinez methodically worked down the field to help Kansas State jump out to a 14-0 lead. Though Oklahoma recovered to tie the game in the second quarter, Martinez and Deuce Vaughn continued to make life difficult for the Oklahoma defense.

The top five remained the same from last week, with Georgia atop the Coaches Poll at No. 1. Alabama is just five points back from their SEC rival. Ohio State is No. 3, and Michigan came in at No. 4. Clemson is No. 5, and replacing Oklahoma in the top six are the USC Trojans, who won a nailbiter vs. Oregon State.

Oklahoma State takes over as the highest-ranked Big 12 team at No. 7 in the nation. The Baylor Bears are at No. 14 in the country after hanging on against Iowa State.

The Sooners aren’t completely out of it, but now have no margin for error as they get set to go on the road to face the undefeated TCU Horned Frogs.
