UFC Fight Night 229 video: Joe Pyfer becomes first to submit Abdul Razak Alhassan

Joe Pyfer continued the impressive start to his octagon career when he choked out Abdul Razak Alhassan at UFC Fight Night 229.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Joe Pyfer[/autotag] continued the impressive start to his octagon career on Saturday when he submitted [autotag]Abdul Razak Alhassan[/autotag] at UFC Fight Night 229.

After speaking extremely confidently about his chances of winning prior to the fight, Pyfer (12-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) went into the cage and delivered. He went back-and-forth with Alhassan (12-6 MMA, 6-6 UFC) over the first rounds, then in the second frame got the fight to the ground and choked his opponent out cold with an arm-triangle choke at the 2:05 mark of Round 2.

Check out the replay below of Pyfer’s finish in the middleweight bout, which took place at the UFC Apex (via X):

The result marked the first first time Alhassan had ever lost by submission, and Pyfer said the performance showed he’s on an upward trajectory in the promotion.

“I’m not surprised, baby,” Pyfer said in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “I just knew I was better than this man everyone. I want a new contract. I’ve finished three of my fights and I have one left.”

In a 3-round middleweight bout in the main event, Joe Pyfer and Abdul Razak Alhassan meet Saturday at UFC Fight Night 229 — also known as UFC Vegas 80 — at UFC Apex. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the UFC Fight Night 229: Pyfer vs. Alhassan odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The prelims can be viewed on ESPN+ starting at 4 p.m. ET with the main card following on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. ET.

Records: Pyfer (11-2-0) | Alhassan (12-5-0)

Pyfer picked up a KO/TKO against Ozzy Diaz in Dana White’s Contender Series: Season 6, Week 1. That earned him a spot at the UFC level, and he has posted back-to-back 1st-round KO/TKO wins over Alen Amedovski and veteran Gerald Meerschaert.

Alhassan has struggled since achieving success early in his UFC career. The Ghana-born fighter started with 4 wins in his first 5 fights at the UFC, but he has won just twice in the past 6 bouts. However, he was able to pick up KO/TKO wins over Alessio Di Chirico and Claudio Ribeiro since Aug. 2021, keeping his career afloat.

Each of these fighters are very close in significant strikes landed per minute, with Pyfer holding the slight 3.63-to-3.54 edge. Pyfer also gets the arrow in his favor with a 1.65-to-0.97 lead in takedown average, too.

UFC Fight Night 229: Joe Pyfer vs. Abdul Razak Alhassan picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Pyfer (-405) has been on fire to start his UFC career, but risking more than 4 times your potential is just a little too much.

Alhassan (+320) would be a tempting play if this were a few years ago, but he has really fallen off, winning just 2 times in the past 6 fights. The knockout against Di Chirico in just 17 seconds shows that he still brings plenty of heat, but he hasn’t faced a quality opponent like Pyfer in a while. He is in danger of the knockout, and playing PYFER BY KO/TKO (-140) is a much better value.

In addition, take a chance on PYFER KO/TKO & ROUND 2 (+700) in the “method & round combo” for a chance to multiply up by 7 times.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 1.5 ROUNDS (+162) is worth a look at plus-money, even taking Pyfer in the prop above, as long as he gets the KO/TKO in the final 90 seconds of Round 2.

You cannot play No (-600): Will the fight go the distance?, however, as risking 6 times your potential return is just way too much risk and not enough reward.

Abdul Razak Alhassan hopes Joe Pyfer brings an exciting fight – not like ‘Buckley’s b*tchass’

Abdul Razak Alhassan is expecting fireworks with Joe Pyfer at UFC Fight Night 229 – at least he hopes so.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Abdul Razak Alhassan[/autotag] is expecting fireworks with Joe Pyfer at UFC Fight Night 229 – at least he hopes so.

Alhassan (12-5 MMA, 6-5 UFC) meets Pyfer (11-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in Saturday’s middleweight co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The event streams on ESPN+.

Boasting a 100 percent knockout rate, it’s no secret what Alhassan’s game plan is. Pyfer has an array of exciting finishes himself, but Alhassan would be deceived if the fight didn’t pan out like he expects, similar to when he lost a split decision to fellow knockout artist Joaquin Buckley in February 2022.

“I’m really hoping for an exciting fights because I thought Buckley’s b*tchass fight was going to be exciting until he started, ‘Let me shoot for his leg, let me shoot for his leg,'” Alhassan told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 229 media day.

“So, I really hope he brings it so we can give the fans a good taste of how good power works. He has a lot of power, I know I have a lot of power. Let’s just go there and see who will be looking at the lights afterwards.”

[lawrence-related id=2684948,2609836,2609488,2684416]

Alhassan has never minced his words when it comes to Buckley (16-6 MMA, 6-4 UFC), who also competes at UFC Fight Night 229 when he meets Alex Morono in a welterweight bout.

“You guys know that guy’s a f*cking b*tch,” Alhassan said of Buckley. “Also, everything he does now is just for f*cking clout. But, he’s a cool dude. One thing I realized, he acts hard for the camera, but when he’s in the back, he’s all nice.

“I’m getting old, I don’t want to go back to 170. But, I really hope he comes up back to 185 and if that fight happens, I promise you guys, most of the fight is going to be just my palm open just smacking the sh*t out of him the whole f*cking fight.”
