5 players who could have bigger roles for Giants in 2023

These five New York Giants (who are still under contract) are likely to see a larger role during the 2023 regular season.

The New York Giants got many key contributions from first-year players in 2022 which helped them become a playoff team for the first time since 2016.

But some of the players they brought in didn’t — or couldn’t — help them due to injury or lost snaps in a numbers game.

Next season, we see many of those players stepping back up and contributing. Here are five names to watch in 2023.

19 players Giants have drafted from Senior Bowl over last 6 years

Since 2017, the New York Giants have drafted 19 players who had practiced during Senior Bowl week or played in the Senior Bowl itself.

The NFL draft run-up begins this week with the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. The New York Giants have always had a presence at the game and have drafted many a player who has participated in the game over the years.

Here are some players the Giants met and scouted at the game and then drafted going back to 2017.

Giants’ 5 biggest needs this offseason

The New York Giants are on the right track but there’s still work to be done, including these 5 issues that must be addressed this offseason.

The New York Giants just completed their best season in six years, posting a 10-8-1 overall record, qualifying for the postseason, and winning their first playoff game since Super Bowl XLVI over a decade ago.

That doesn’t mean the turnaround is complete. There is still much work to be done.

Here are the five most pressing needs the Giants need to address this offseason.

Giants’ 7 most disappointing players of 2022

The New York Giants provided many reasons for optimism in 2022 but these seven players most certainly disappointed.

The New York Giants had a banner season under the first-year combo of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, going 10-8-1 overall and qualifying for the postseason for the first time since 2016.

That was satisfying for many Giant fans but the season wasn’t without its disappointments. Here are seven disappointing players from the 2022 season.

Report: Giants’ Aaron Robinson has partially torn ACL, MCL

New York Giants CB Aaron Robinson underwent surgery to repair a partially torn ACL and partially torn MCL in November and is out 9 months.

New York Giants cornerback Aaron Robinson returned in Week 4 after missing several games due to an emergency appendectomy. However, he managed to play just 12 defensive snaps before he again found himself on the sideline.

The 2021 third-round pick had suffered a knee injury against the Chicago Bears and eventually landed on injured reserve.

The severity of Robinson’s injury was initially unclear, but head coach Brian Daboll revealed it was severe enough that his season was likely over.

“Doubtful,” Daboll said when asked if Robinson would make it back this year.

More than a month later, we now know why.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports that Robinson suffered both a partially torn ACL and a partially torn MCL. He underwent surgery in November and won’t be cleared for football activities until next August at the earliest.

That puts Robinson on track to return for the 2023 regular season but he is very much behind the eightball. He missed eight games during his rookie season due to various injuries and will have appeared in just two games this season.

In the 11 career games Robinson has played, he’s recorded 32 tackles (21 solo), one QB hit, and four passes defensed.

Giants’ Nick Williams, Aaron Robinson unlikely to return this season

New York Giants DT Nick Williams is out for the remainder of the season and CB Aaron Robinson is “doubtful” to return.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said on Tuesday that defensive lineman Nick Williams (bicep) was not coming back this year and that it’s ‘doubtful’ that cornerback Aaron Robinson’s knee injury was likely to return as well.

“Doubtful,” Daboll said when asked if Robinson would make it back this year.

“Yeah,” Daboll added when asked if Williams was out for the season.

Williams started seven of the Giants’ first eight games and recorded 15 total tackles with two passes defense and two QB hits.

Since being selected 71st overall in the 2021 NFL draft, Robinson has been injured more often than not. He missed the entire first half of last season on PUP with a foot injury. This season, he had his appendix removed and missed two games. Robinson injured his knee after returning and has been on IR since October 4.

The Giants have been getting by at both positions without Williams and Robinson but are thin along the line and in the secondary and can’t afford any more injuries. That is one of the many reasons why the Xavier McKinney injury is going to be so impactful.

Injury to Giants CB Aaron Robinson may be season-ending

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll leaves open the possibility that Aaron Robinson’s knee injury may be season-ending.

New York Giants cornerback Aaron Robinson has had a less than ideal start to his professional career. After missing several games due to injury during his rookie season, he returned in 2022 poised to start alongside Adoree’ Jackson.

But again, Robinson has been hamstrung by injury.

Following a Week 1 victory over the Tennessee Titans, Robinson underwent an emergency appendectomy that kept him out two weeks. He returned in Week 4 against the Chicago Bears but was quickly lost to a knee injury.

The Giants placed Robinson on injured reserve and on Thursday, head coach Brian Daboll left open the possibility that the cornerback’s season is over.

The mere fact that Daboll entertained the idea of Robinson’s season being over means two things. One, the injury is obviously serious. And two, the second-year corner is a long way off from returning if he does.

That leaves the already thin Giants even more thin at cornerback for the foreseeable future.

Giants place CB Aaron Robinson on IR

New York Giants CB Aaron Robinson (knee) will miss at least four games after being placed on injured reserve.

The New York Giants have placed cornerback Aaron Robinson on injured reserve (IR), meaning he will miss the team’s next four games at minimum.

Robinson started alongside Adoree’ Jackson in Week 4 against the Chicago Bears, but managed just 12 snaps before suffering a knee injury. That came on the heels of an emergency appendectomy that cost Robinson the previous two games.

A third-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Robinson started his rookie season on the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list as the result of core surgery. He was activated on November 1 and went on to play in nine games, recording 26 tackles (16 solo), one QB hit and three passes defensed.

In two games this season. Robinson has recorded six tackles (five solo) and one pass defensed.

With Robinson now on IR, the Giants will turn to Darnay Holmes, Cor’Dale Flott, Fabian Moreau, Justin Layne and Nick McCloud to help fill the void. They also have Zyon Gilbert and Olaijah Griffin on the practice squad.

Giants injury updates: Kenny Golladay, Aaron Robinson likely to miss time

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll offered updates on more than 10 injured players and indicated that WR Kenny Golladay may miss time.

The New York Giants may have defeated the Chicago Bears, 20-12, in Week 4, but it came at a cost. In excess of 10 players went down injured and the prognosis on some of them is less than desirable.

During a Monday afternoon Zoom conference with the team’s beat reporters, head coach Brian Daboll broke down each — some in more detail than others.

Here are the updates on the team’s walking wounded.

Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor among new wave of Giants injuries

The New York Giants saw 10 players go down with injury against the Chicago Bears, including QBs Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor.

The New York Giants may have picked up a victory against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, but they saw a new wave of injuries decimate their roster.

Among those injured were quarterbacks Daniel Jones, who suffered a sprained ankle, and Tyrod Taylor, who exited with a concussion.

After Taylor was knocked out of the game, the Giants were in such dire need at quarterback that Saquon Barkley briefly took over before Jones was forced back in under center.

“(Jones) wanted to go in,” head coach Brian Daboll said after the game. “I said, ‘You’re not going into the game. I see you’re limping. I’m not risking you getting injured to try to protect yourself with that limp. But if we need you, can you go back in the game?’ He said, ‘Yeah. I can go in the game now.’

“I said, ‘Tyrod’s going in the game, and if we need you, hopefully it’ll be just to hand the ball off.’ So, when Tyrod went down, I looked over to (quarterbacks coach) Shea (Tierney) and said, ‘Is he good to go?’ He said, ‘Yup.'”

With two injured quarterbacks, the Giants managed to win without throwing the ball the rest of the game.

“I feel good. I feel good. A little sore but all good. Listen to the trainers and doctors and go from there but feeling good,” Jones said, admitting there was pain when he returned to the game. “It hurt. Didn’t feel like I could move quite the same.”

In addition to Jones and Taylor, the Giants also saw injuries to right tackle Evan Neal, safety Julian Love, guard Mark Glowinski, wide receiver Kenny Golladay, cornerback Aaron Robinson, defensive lineman defensive lineman Henry Mondeaux and edge rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari.

Are we missing any?

The exact severity of each injury remains unclear but at least a few of them (Robinson, Mondeaux) appeared destined to miss some time. The same is likely true for Jones and Taylor. The good news is that Thibodeaux said he merely had a back spasm and would be fine.

Love also said he would “return soon,” but that promise was vague and also sounded like he could miss some time.

Although the Giants are 3-1 on the season and that’s worth celebrating, they once again appear to be well on their way toward leading the league in injuries — a distinction they own since 2009.
