Nation’s top JUCO CB commits to Georgia football for 2021

No. 1 JUCO cornerback De’Jahn Warren has committed to Georgia for the 2021 recruiting class. Details here

Great start to the week for Georgia football as De’Jahn Warren, JUCO’s No. 1 cornerback for the class of 2021, commits to the Bulldogs.

That makes 14 commitments so far in the Bulldogs 2021 recruiting class and the first from JUCO.

Warren made his commitment in a video posted through his Twitter account Monday morning.

His top schools were Oklahoma, Alabama, Tennessee, Maryland, Penn State, Florida State and Georgia.

Warren plays for Lackawanna Community College where he is rated as the No. 2 JUCO prospect overall, the No. 1 JUCO cornerback and the No. 1 player in Maryland, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

That makes three defensive backs added to the Bulldogs’ 2021 class.

David Daniel, Javon Bullard and now Warren are set to join a Georgia secondary that will soon feature even more new faces as guys like Eric Stokes, Tyson Campbell and Richard Lecounte inevitably move on to the NFL.

247Sports’ 2020 bowl projections have Florida Gators tasting sugar in CFP

The projections are high on the Gators’ potential this fall, as the publication has the program squaring off with Clemson in the Sugar Bowl.

The 2020 college football season will be unlike any in recent memory.

Citing concerns over the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), two Power Five conferences, the Big Ten and Pac-12, have postponed their fall campaigns.

The Mid-American and Mountain West, two Group of Five leagues, have done the same.

As of August 23, however, the American Athletic, Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Conference USA, Southeastern, and Sun Belt plan to proceed with fall competition, albeit with modified schedules, which have eliminated most slated non-conference games.

Taking all this into account, 247Sports’ Brad Crawford released his 2020 bowl projections on August 21.

[lawrence-related id=20577]

Crawford points out the Football Bowl Association will attempt to honor the matchup tie-ins for as many of these games as possible.

These projections are high on the Florida Gators’ potential this fall, as the publication has the program squaring off with the Clemson Tigers in the Sugar Bowl, a College Football Playoff Semifinal.

“Who gets the No. 4 seed this season? Isn’t that the question we’re always asking this time of year?” Crawford began.

“You could make the argument no team nationally benefits more from the Big Ten and Pac-12 not playing this fall than the SEC’s runner-up.

“One of the three Power Five conferences will put two teams in the Playoff and we’re expecting that to be the SEC. For the Gators, perhaps a more direct road – and a bit less challenging mountain to scale – in getting to a semifinal setting would be finishing 9-1 overall, but not winning the East.

“How does that happen? Florida wins the front-end of its two-game showdown with LSU and Georgia and the Bulldogs take the division with their only loss coming at Alabama. Another loss in Atlanta makes Georgia 9-2, which would likely knock (Kirby) Smart’s team down a peg in the eyes of the selection committee despite beating the Gators (again, 9-1) head-to-head. Hey, we’re still talking about hypotheticals here, aren’t we?”

247Sports has Dabo Swinney’s Tigers topping Florida and advancing to face Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide, who defeated the Oklahoma Sooners in the Rose Bowl in this exercise, in the National Championship Game.

As for the reigning national champions, Ed Orgeron’s LSU Tigers, the article has them battling Mack Brown’s North Carolina Tar Heels in the Peach Bowl, the game the Gators handled Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines in two years ago.

[lawrence-related id=20688]

Last season, Florida clashed with Bronco Mendenhall’s Virginia Cavaliers in the Orange Bowl, and this time around, 247Sports has Smart’s Bulldogs facing Brian Kelly’s Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Miami Gardens-based game.

Other SEC projections feature Mike Leach’s Mississippi State Bulldogs battling Chris Klieman’s Kansas State Wildcats in the Liberty Bowl, Lane Kiffin and the Mississippi Rebels traveling to Nashville, Tennessee to face Manny Diaz’ Miami Hurricanes, Mark Stoops’ Kentucky Wildcats playing the in-state rival Louisville Cardinals, coached by Scott Satterfield, in the Gator Bowl, and Jeremy Pruitt’s Tennessee Volunteers are penciled-in against Mike Gundy’s Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Alamo Bowl.

Jimbo Fisher’s Texas A&M Aggies are matched up with one of the nation’s top Group of Five programs, Luke Fickell’s Cincinnati Bearcats, in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, and Gus Malzahn’s Auburn Tigers take the field against Tom Herman’s Texas Longhorns in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.

A key Badger target in the class of 2021 will be playing high school football this fall

After class of 2021 Wisconsin commits Darryl Peterson and Jack Pugh received news this week that Ohio will be playing high school football this fall, the key remaining Badger target in the class received similar good news from his home state of Pennsylvania.

He is five-star offensive tackle Nolan Rucci, 247Sports’ No. 13 overall prospect in the class of 2021, the No. 4 offensive tackle, the No. 1 player from the state of Pennsylvania and the No. 413-ranked recruit of all time.

He now along with Peterson, Pugh and others will play their senior season of high school football before entering the college ranks next season.

Rucci’s destination is still unknown, though, as Wisconsin, Penn State and Clemson are all thought to have a good shot at landing him–as 247Sports’ crystal ball projection gives Penn State a 50 percent chance to get his commitment, Wisconsin 37.5 percent and Clemson 12.5 percent.

As is the case with many top recruits, rumors come out weekly about which schools gain a lead or fall behind in the recruiting process. If Badger fans want good news after a week of coping with the fact that football won’t be played this fall here’s this: three weeks ago a piece came out saying the program was “in a great position” to land the five-star offensive tackle.

Who knows where the recruiting trail leads for Rucci, but if the Badgers were to land him they would complete a 2021 class that would by all accounts be the best in program history and possibly in the nation’s top-10.

Check back in to BadgersWire throughout the fall as we follow Rucci’s recruiting process and see if the Badgers end up landing the top recruit in program history.

Along with one future Badger and one key Badger target made the 2020 preseason All-USA high school football first team, two future members of the program were named to the second team.

They are three-star outside linebacker Darryl Peterson and four-star offensive tackle Riley Mahlman.

The two players are key pieces of the program’s loaded class of 2021 and figure to be centerpieces of Paul Chryst’s gameplan for years to come.

Peterson, first, is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 512 player in the class of 2021, the No. 33 outside linebacker and the No. 19 player from the state of Ohio.

Mahlman lands at No. 136 nationally, No. 18 at his position and No. 1 from the state of Minnesota.

Both players are set to join the program next season as the Badgers look to finally get over the hump and win their first Big Ten title since 2012.

2020 Gators Football Recruiting Profile: Jonathan Odom

This is a prospect player profile for tight end Jonathan Odom of the Florida Gators football recruiting class of 2020.

Name: Jonathan Odom

Position: Tight End

Height: 6’5″

Weight: 250 lbs

Hometown: Tampa, Fla.

High School: Jesuit High School

Twitter: @Odom_87

247Sports Composite: ⭐⭐⭐

Rivals.com: ⭐⭐⭐

Overview:

Jonathan Odom is a three-star tight end from Jesuit High School in Tampa. He was the No. 32 overall tight end in the 2020 recruiting class and the No. 768 player in the nation.

The son of former UF offensive lineman Jason Odom, who was a two-time First Team All-SEC selection and a one-time All-American who played four seasons in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jonathan committed to play for coach Dan Mullen back in May 2019 despite offers from other SEC powerhouses like Alabama and LSU.

He signed with Florida during the early signing period in December, and he enrolled at UF in June.

At 6-foot-5, 250-pounds, Odom possesses ideal size for a tight end. He has demonstrated blocking ability throughout his high school career, but the bulk of his contributions at the position came in the passing game. His junior season in 2018, he had 20 catches for 275 yards and nine touchdowns.

With returning tight end Kyle Pitts poised for a breakout season this year and players like Kemore Gamble and Keon Zipperer still on the roster, it’s likely that Odom will redshirt in 2020 while possibly seeing action on special teams or in reserve situations.

2020 Gators Football Recruiting Profile: Fenley Graham

This is a prospect player profile for cornerback Fenley Graham of the Florida Gators football recruiting class of 2020.

Name: Fenley Graham

Position: Cornerback

Height: 5’8.5″

Weight: 171 lbs

Hometown: Lakeland, Fla.

High School: Lakeland High School

Twitter: @FenleyG11

247Sports Composite: ⭐⭐⭐

Rivals.com: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Overview:

Fenley Graham is a three-star recruit from Lakeland High School, according to the 247Sports Composite. The No. 474 player nationally and the No. 34 cornerback, Graham received an offer from the Gators in December of 2018 before he eventually committed the following June. He also had offers from Miami, West Virginia and more.

He signed with Florida during the early signing period in December, and he enrolled on campus on July 2.

Though he’s undersized for a corner at 5-foot-8.5, he makes up for it with tremendous athleticism and solid ball skills. His speed makes him a threat to return an interception to the house, and he could even see some time as a kick returner in Gainesville.

Graham finds himself a bit overshadowed as the fifth-highest rated corner in coach Dan Mullen’s 2020 recruiting class, but his athleticism should help him see the field in some capacity sooner rather than later.

Irish have two stars honored as preseason All-Americans by CBS Sports

One Notre Dame star on the first team, one on the second team while a snub happens and head coach Brian Kelly gets some love as well.

The preseason accolades will be changing significantly with the absence of the Big Ten and Pac-12, but no Notre Dame player who gets nominated will care much about that. Today, 247Sports and CBS Sports, in conjunction announced their 2020 preseason All-American teams.

There was only one Fighting Irish star to make the first team, offensive tackle Liam Eichenberg. The presumed leader of the offensive line should complete his Notre Dame career with plenty of pancakes. He will literally have quarterback Ian Book’s back for the season. Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah made the second team, but safety Kyle Hamilton was omitted from the list. I think the experts overlooked the rising sophomore star as he was named to the USA Today preseason All-American second team yesterday.

It shouldn’t be ignored that head coach Brian Kelly garnered votes for coach of the year, even if another ACC coach was selected, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney. Notre Dame should be able to navigate through their ACC schedule fairly easily, with the game against the Tigers in South Bend as the contest everyone has circled on their calendars. Kelly last took home coach of the year honors during the 2018 campaign, which he led the Irish to an undefeated regular season and berth into the College Football Playoffs.

These are big honors for Eichenberg and Owusu-Koramoah, as the culmination of their collegiate careers will hopefully be very fruitful. Also, keep an eye out for Kelly and Hamilton, they could potentially be in line for some postseason recognition.

2021 4-star SDE set to announce college commitment

Four-star SDE Monkell Goodwine is set to make his college decision on Saturday after narrowing his list down to five schools.

The recruiting world has been turned upside down due to the coronavirus, but that does not mean that it has stopped. In fact, Alabama has seen 15 of its current 16 players for the 2021 commit during the global pandemic.

That has helped the Crimson Tide climb all the way to No. 2 (No. 1 in the SEC) according to 247Sports. But Nick Saban and the rest of his coaching staff isn’t done.

Monkell Goodwine, a four-star strongside defensive end from National Christian Academy in Fort Washington (Md.), is set to make his college decision on Saturday. According to a Tweet from Real Live Sports Nation, that decision is set to come at approximately 3:30 p.m. ET (2:30 CT).

The final five schools who have all been fighting for Monkell’s commitment are Alabama, Clemson, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Arizona State. The Crimson Tide, according to the Crystal Ball predictions on 247Sports, are currently considered the favorite.

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive lineman is currently rated as the No. 112 overall prospect, No. 9 strongside defensive end and No. 4 player from the state of Maryland, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Stay tuned for where Goodwine ends up with more recruiting updates from Roll Tide Wire, part of the USA TODAY Sports College Wire network!

2020 Gators Football Recruiting Profile: Richard Leonard

This is a prospect player profile for offensive guard Richard Leonard of the Florida Gators football recruiting class of 2020.

Name: Richard Leonard

Position: Offensive Lineman

Height: 6’2″

Weight: 320 lbs

Hometown: Cocoa, Fla.

High School: Cocoa High School

Twitter: @trey4six

247Sports Composite: ⭐⭐⭐

Rivals.com: ⭐⭐⭐

Overview:

A product of Cocoa High School, Leonard possesses great size for the guard position at 6-foot-2 and 320 pounds.

He is more than simply a big body, however, as he showcased his footwork and athleticism by also playing for the Tigers’ baseball team.

Like in classmate Mordecai McDaniel’s case, Leonard originally committed to a different Southeastern Conference (SEC) East Division program. While the former first pledged to Jeremy Pruitt’s Tennessee Volunteers, the latter chose Mark Stoops’ Kentucky Wildcats.

Recruited by co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Darin Hinshaw, Leonard committed to the Lexington-based program on October 21, 2018. Kentucky had the advantage of connecting with the three-star guard early, as they were just the second Power Five school to extend him an offer, behind only the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, then-still coached by Chris Ash.

This verbal bond lasted less than six months, however, as he re-opened his recruitment on April 19, 2019. Slightly more than one month later, on May 29, he chose to pursue life in Gainesville, committing to co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach John Hevesy and running backs coach Greg Knox.

Signing his National Letter of Intent (LOI) during the Early Signing Period on December 18, Leonard enrolled the same day and participated in practices leading up to the Gators’ Capital One Orange Bowl victory over the Virginia Cavaliers.

The in-state prospect figures to compete for playing time at left guard at the collegiate level. Entering the 2020 season, redshirt sophomores Richard Gouraige and Griffin McDowell project to appear above him on the depth chart.

Overall, Leonard is the 20th-highest of Florida’s 21 enrollees in the cycle, slotting in above two-star Australian punter Jeremy Crawshaw.

The 247Sports Composite ranked Leonard as the No. 768 player nationally, a top-50 guard in the class, and the No. 101 player in the Sunshine State.

2021 three-star defensive tackle has the Badgers in his top 11

Although the 2020 Big Ten football season came to a screeching halt this week the recruiting schedule will (hopefully) continue without a hitch.

For the Badgers, at least, that appears to be true as yesterday they were listed in the top 11 schools for class of 2021 three-star defensive tackle Marquise Brunson.

The Virginia Beach, Virginia native is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 1581 player in the class of 2021, the No. 89 defensive tackle and the No. 48 player from the state of Virginia.

Other Big Ten schools in the running for Brunson are Maryland and Minnesota.

Though the Badgers have big names along the defensive front in their class of 2021 including four-star defensive end T.J. Bollers, the class is yet to have a commit at the defensive tackle position so adding Brunson would be a significant addition to round out the class.
