27 Dolphins who could be free agents at the end of 2022 season

Here’s who could be on the market in March.

If the 2022 NFL season ended today, the Miami Dolphins would be the second seed in the AFC and would be hosting a playoff game at Hard Rock Stadium.

Unfortunately, that’s not exactly the way all of this works. Miami has seven more games on their schedule following this week’s bye, including a number of contests against teams in the AFC East.

This week is a perfect time, however, to take a quick look ahead and see who the Dolphins are in danger of losing this offseason. Here are 27 players who are set to hit the market.

Free Agency: 25 potential targets for the Falcons in 2023

Free Agency: 25 potential targets for the Falcons in the 2023 offseason

It has taken less than two years for Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot to turn around one of the NFL’s worst salary cap situations. After trading away several bloated contracts, the Falcons are projected to have the second-most cap space in 2023.

With over $70 million to spend, no player is off limits. Let’s check out 25 potential free agents Atlanta could target this offseason.

The Eagles have yet to play a regular-season game in 2022, and as the team gets ready to start training camp, it’s never too soon for an early look at the key players who’ll be entering free agency.

Philadelphia has 20 guys who could hit the open market, along with a combined 10 ERFA and RFA’s who’ll be looking to return to the Eagles in some compacity.

Miles Sanders could be playing for his future with the team, while players like James Bradberry, Kyzir White, and Javon Hargrave will look for big paydays.

List of Jags players heading into the last year of their current contracts in 2022

According to Over the Cap, the Jags have just under 40 players who have a year left on their current contracts.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were big spenders this offseason in free agency and spent the most guaranteed money in NFL history. General manager Trent Baalke will be hoping that decision pays off, and if it does, the Jags could be looking to keep their team together as best as they can in 2023.

Overall, the Jags have 38 players with expiring contracts in 2023, according to Over the Cap. Included in that group are tight ends Evan Engram and Dan Arnold, right tackle Jawaan Taylor, receiver Marvin Jones, and defensive lineman Dawuane Smoot, to name a few. The Jags also have one restricted free agent set to hit the market in James Robinson, who has been a huge source of offense for the team for the last three seasons.

Of the 38 players, 22 will be unrestricted free agents, five will be restricted, and 11 will be exclusive rights free agents. Here is the full list of the group, alongside their adjusted average per year figures:

Former Alabama TE Irv Smith Jr. about to enter biggest season of young career

The former Alabama tight end will have to prove in 2022 that he’s worthy of an extension. Otherwise, he will hit free agency in the 2023 offseason.

Former Alabama tight end Irv Smith Jr. was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft. His three seasons with the franchise have been productive, but 2022 will be the season that determines what happens in free agency when his contract expires.

There was a slight bump in the right direction in his sophomore season, but his stats overall are nearly identical from both the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

In his two-year career, Smith has tallied 66 receptions for 676 yards and seven touchdowns.

Jordy McElroy of the Vikings Wire recently described why the upcoming 2022 season is vital to Smith’s potential journey through free agency in the 2023 offseason. It’s now on Smith to convince the front office they should extend his contract and not risk losing him to free agency.

“This is the year where Smith must take all of it from the practice field and show it on game day,” writes McElroy. “The Vikings are loaded to the teeth with offensive weapons. So there will be plenty of opportunities for him to exploit opposing defenses and make plays.

“A player with his size and skills is a rare commodity at this level, and coach Kevin O’Connell will do everything within his power to make the best use of him in the offense.

“This is obviously a wait-and-see approach from the Vikings as well. Time will tell if they’re actually willing to let his contract expire and play the free agent game with him in the offseason.”

The Vikings will look for the star qualities they have been seeking from Smith since they drafted him in 2022. It’s make-or-break time for the tight end.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Irv Smith Jr. and other former Alabama players that are now in the NFL.

Taking an early look at Eagles’ 2023 free agents

Taking an early look at the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2023 NFL free agents

The Eagles have yet to play a regular-season game in 2022, but it’s never too soon for an early look at the key players who’ll be entering free agency.

Several Saints players rank among the Athletic’s top 30 free agents for 2023

Several Saints players rank among the Athletic’s top 30 free agents for 2023:

The Athletic’s Sheil Kapadia put together a list of the top 30 pending free agents for 2023, and several New Orleans Saints players made the cut. That feels ominous after the team parted with two of their highly-rated free agents this offseason in free safety Marcus Williams and left tackle Terron Armstead, but each situation is different, and it’s possible the Saints act more aggressively to retain homegrown talent.

Defensive end Marcus Davenport is the highest-rated Saints player on Kapadia’s lists of pending free agents, ranked at No. 20 overall. His take on Davenport ahead of the 2022 season:

“He’s coming off a career season in which he produced nine sacks and 16 quarterback hits in 11 games. Durability has been an issue for Davenport. He’s missed 17 games in four NFL seasons. But young, versatile pass rushers with upside are always in demand. Davenport is another player who has a lot to gain with a strong 2022 showing.”

Kapadia also listed Saints center Erik McCoy at No. 25, making him the best pending free agent at his position. Here’s what he wrote of McCoy:

“He’s one of the best young centers in the NFL. McCoy has started 44 games in three seasons. He did not allow a sack on 433 pass block reps last year, according to Pro Football Focus. Currently, the top centers make between $13 million and $14 million per year. Given his age, McCoy could top that if he delivers a strong showing in 2022.”

But these aren’t the only Saints free agents to monitor for 2023. Other starters like defensive tackles David Onyemata and Shy Tuttle, defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and wide receiver Deonte Harty are each headed for unrestricted free agency. There will also be restricted free agents to deal with including wide receiver Marquez Callaway and punter Blake Gillikin.

New Orleans knows this. The Saints have been preparing for it. They’re currently over the projected 2023 salary cap (estimated at $225 million) by more than $33 million, but they can roll over a lot of this year’s unspent $19 million to wear that down. They’ve been drafting project players early like defensive end Payton Turner and center-guard convert Cesar Ruiz in case some higher-profile talents move on. They can also restructure some contracts to get under the cap in a hurry, as they’ve done before, if they so choose. The point is that the Saints have flexibility to do what they want.
