Our Bears offseason position previews continue with cornerback, which is an underrated need.

The 2023 offseason is officially in full swing, and the Chicago Bears are gearing up for what should be one of the busiest springs in recent memory.

Armed with $98.6 million in cap space, general manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus will have plenty of opportunities to improve the team roster in free agency, while also needing to make key decisions on which players they should let walk.

Here at Bears Wire, we’re going position by position to break down where Chicago stands entering the 2023 offseason. Next up on defense is cornerback, which is an underrated need after Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon.

Commanders expected to franchise tag DT Da’Ron Payne

It sounds like one of the Bears’ top free agent options will soon be off the market as the Commanders are expected to tag Da’Ron Payne.

The Chicago Bears have plenty of needs to address this offseason, most notably the defensive line. There are some intriguing names set to hit free agency next month. But it sounds like one top option will soon be off the market.

The Washington Commanders are expected to franchise tag Pro Bowl defensive tackle Da’Ron Payne, according to The Athletic. The deadline for teams to apply the franchise tag runs through March 7. The franchise tender for defensive tackles is worth $18.937 million.

Payne, 25, is coming off a career year, where he posted 11.5 sacks and 64 combined tackles last season. He earned his first Pro Bowl nod after anchoring a solid Commanders defense.

With one of the top defensive tackle targets soon to be off the board, there are some other intriguing options in free agency. That includes Philadelphia’s Javon Hargrave, Denver’s Dre’Mont Jones and Minnesota’s Dalvin Tomlinson.

10 offensive linemen the Bears should target in free agency to help Justin Fields

The Bears need to shore up the offensive line this offseason, and there are no shortage of options in free agency.

The Chicago Bears are sitting in a good place ahead of NFL free agency, which kicks off next month. They’re slated to have north of $100 million in salary cap space, where general manager Ryan Poles will look to build up arguably the league’s worst roster in 2022.

Chicago has no shortage of needs to address, especially on offense where it’s paramount to build around quarterback Justin Fields. Fields is entering a pivotal third season — his second under Luke Getsy — and he needs help along the offensive line.

There are no starting jobs guaranteed along the offensive line, and Poles could make significant upgrades at tackle, guard and center in free agency, where there are no shortage of viable options to get this unit on track.

Here are 10 offensive linemen set to hit free agency the Bears could target to give Fields some better protection up front:

The offseason is in full swing, and we’re just over a month away from the start of the new league year and free agency. And the Bears have some important decisions to make when it comes to in-house free agents.

The Bears are slated to have nearly $98.6 million in salary cap space — which is the most in the league (by a wide margin) — and there are plenty of holes to fill on the roster for new general manager Ryan Poles. Perhaps a few of those roster spots will be filled by some of Chicago’s in-house free agents, including some key contributors from last season that could be back as starters or reserves.

While there are no true No. 1 receivers currently set to hit the free agent market, there are still some intriguing options that would help bolster a receiver group that currently features Darnell Mooney, Chase Claypool, Velus Jones Jr. and Equanimeous St. Brown.

Miami might need depth at the position.

The Miami Dolphins have two star wide receivers on their roster, as Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are coming off of one of the best seasons by a duo in NFL history.

Beyond that, there are a bunch of questions. Cedrick Wilson Jr. was just signed last offseason, but he didn’t have much of a role, and his cap hit could make him a reasonable trade piece.

Two wideouts coming off of their rookie seasons, Erik Ezukanma and Braylon Sanders, round out the group, leaving the Dolphins looking for some depth.

With that said, the free agent market might be a good place for Miami to look. These are all of the wide receivers who are expected to be free to sign with another team:
