Texas among top five schools for four-star safety Larry Turner-Gooden

Texas is riding a wave of momentum on the recruiting trail right now.

Texas needs all the help they can get in order to bounce back from this horrible season that they are having.

They have a chance to add another elite talent to the roster in California native and four-star safety, Larry Turner-Gooden. The former Arizona State commit announced via Twitter that he would be making his decision on Jan. 8 at the All-American game.

Gooden’s top five schools include Colorado, USC, Maryland, Penn State, and Texas.

The Longhorns are doing everything they can to revamp a defense that statistically ranks as one of the worst defenses in the nation. Texas is also slated to be losing three starting defensive backs next season, including both safeties in B.J. Foster and Brenden Schooler as they are both graduating and being honored at the senior day ceremony.

It is obvious that defense is a point of emphasis in recruiting, as Texas’ 2022 class is made up of 13 defensive players out of the 23 total commits.

Adding Turner to the class would be a huge get, as the combination of his athleticism and receiver instincts will only help him thrive at the next level.

Five recruits that Texas should poach from TCU’s 2022 class

With TCU and Gary Patterson parting ways, Texas should try to flip these five commits.

All is fair in love and college football recruiting.

When another program loses a head coach, it is a guarantee that other schools will start reaching out to their current commits.

TCU parted ways with Gary Patterson on Sunday, who had been the head coach for the Horned Frogs for over 20 years. While Texas is likely not too disappointed to see him go, as lately he had quite the hold on the Longhorns, they are probably even more thrilled about the fact that they will have another crack at some certain recruits that committed to TCU.

The 2022 recruiting class put together by Patterson is not the deepest, as there are only 11 commits and it currently ranks No. 46 in the nation, but there are some talented players that Texas missed out and now will have one final swing at trying to convince them to come to the Forty

Here are five players that Texas should consider attempting to flip from TCU’s 2022 class starting with offensive linemen Cade McConnell.

Social media reacts to Brenen Thompson’s commitment to Texas

Texas picked up Brenen Thompson and plenty of social media buzz over the last 24hrs.

The Longhorns may have caught their biggest fish in the recruiting pond on Wednesday after gaining a commitment from four-star wide reciever Brenan Thompson.

The Spearman, Texas native is one of the fastest players in the nation, and is rated as a top-150 player in the 2022 class. The speedy receiver boosted Texas’ recruiting class to the No. 2 class in the nation, and his commitment had social media going ballistic after his announcement.

There is definitely momentum building in Austin, and many think and hope that Steve Sarkisian and his staff are not yet done getting big-named recruits to join their ranks. Thompson’s commitment sent the recruiting world into a frenzy, and has many current commits, fans, and potential recruits speculating that Texas is building a juggernaut of a class with hopes they can still get players like Evan Stewart, Devon Campbell, Harold Perkins, and Jaleel Skinner among several others.

The Longhorns receivers have been one of the weaker groups up to this point throughout the season, as they have struggled with drop issues and just overall consistency. Sarkisian is making it a point of emphasis in recruiting that this will not be an ongoing issue.

Let’s take a look at the social media reaction after Thompson put on the burnt orange hat and announced his commitment to Texas.

Texas receives crystal ball prediction for former commit Jaylon Guilbeau

Texas received a crystal ball prediction for four-star CB, former commit Jaylon Guilbeau.

Texas has been riding a wave of momentum on the recruiting trail as of late, and they may have some more good news coming their way.

After being the first commitment of Texas’ 2022 class, four-star cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau felt it was in his best interest to decommit from Texas to re-evaluate his options. Outside of the Longhorns, the primary players in his recruitment appeared to be TCU and Texas A&M.

Texas defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach Terry Joseph is listed as Guilbeau’s primary recruiter. It appears to be going well as the Longhorns recently received a crystal ball prediction from Nick Harris.

This would be quite the comeback for the Longhorns in his recruiting cycle, as the day after he decommitted from Texas, there were multiple crystal ball’s entered in favor of Gary Patterson and TCU.

Texas currently hold the No. 3 class in the nation according to 247Sports, and Guilbeau will strengthen the rating immensely as he would be one of Texas’ highest rated commits in the class.

The Longhorns could use depth at the position after this season, as they are likely to lose three cornerbacks in D’Shawn Jamison, Joshua Thompson, and Darrion Dunn.

Texas jumps Alabama, now has a top five recruiting class in the nation for the 2022 cycle

Four-star DL Justice Finkley’s commitment boosts Texas’ 2022 class to No. 3 in the nation.

Texas’ elite recruiting success under Steve Sarkisian continued on Thursday when four-star defensive lineman Justice Finkley announced his commitment to the University of Texas over Alabama and Colorado.

His commitment marks the fourth four-star commit in the last two weeks across the defensive line for the Longhorns. It boosts Texas’ 2022 recruiting class ranking three spots from No. 6 all the way up to No. 3 in the nation.

The Trussville, Alabama native decided to turn down Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide to play for Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian. During his commitment on CBS, Finkley stated that he has kept in contact with Sarkisian multiple times a week.

The Longhorns are getting a player who has played all positions across the defensive line, and his great play and productivity as a junior earned him a first-team selection on the MaxPreps Alabama all-state team.

Thanks to Finkley’s commitment, Texas’ recruiting class not only moved to No. 3, but they leapfrogged Alabama. It also puts the first full recruiting cycle for Sarkisian ahead of schools such as Ohio State and Georgia.

Big things are happing in Austin, and seeing how the remaining few targets on the board play out for Texas will be fascinating. Sarkisian wasn’t joking when he said the program will take a “All Gas, No Brakes” approach to everything that they do.

Four-star DL Justice Finkley announces commitment date

2022 four-star DL Justice Finkley sets his commitment date.

The Longhorns are in the mix for another top talent in the 2022 recruiting class, four-star defensive lineman Justice Finkley.

The Trussville, Alabama native is deciding between three schools: Alabama, Texas, and Colorado. Texas will have a tough time beating out Nick Saban on this one. Finkley announced via Twitter on Monday that he has set his commitment date for Wednesday Sept. 9.

His decision will be televised by CBS Sports at 4:15 p.m. CDT.

Finkley is a top-120 player in 247Sports’ class of 2022 rankings and is the No. 18 defensive lineman. He is also viewed as the No. 7 player in the state of Alabama.

He has played multiple positions across the defensive line and has accumulated a total of 146 tackles, 12 sacks, and three forced fumbles in his first two seasons on varsity.

He was evaluated by 247Sports’ Clint Brewster, who spoke highly of his abilities.

“Finkley has a thick lower half that can generate force. Powerful leverage rusher in a 3-4 scheme at the high school level. Also shifts down to play defensive tackle at times. Excellent crossing the face of offensive lineman and getting an inside rush. Good chase athleticism and lateral movement skills. Gets underneath opponents and can forklift with great leverage. Play strength and physicality upon contact standout with Finkley. Can move down to the interior shades on the defenive line at the next level depending on physical development.”

If the Longhorns can secure a commitment from Finkley, it would be the fourth commit from a four-star defensive lineman over the last month. It would likely also boost Texas’ 2022 class, which currently sits at No. 6 in the nation.

The Sarkisian era of recruiting is off to a solid start, but grabbing a player like Finkley can make it great.

Where Texas lands in ESPN’s updated 2022 recruiting class rankings

ESPN recently released their updated 2022 recruiting class rankings.

After getting off to an extremely strong start in the recruiting world, it seems as if Steve Sarkisian and his staff have hit a wall when it comes to landing big-time commitments.

The most probable reason is that players and their families want to see the Longhorns in action this fall in order to see if they’re able to produce and develop under the new coaching staff. Texas is in a situation where Austin is always seen as an attractive destination, but recruits need to see some tangible results and success.

ESPN recently released their 2022 recruiting class rankings (subscription required), and Texas’ class landed at No. 11 in the nation. Sarkisian’s group is currently ahead of Clemson, Missouri, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina.

The 2022 cycle for Texas is headlined by a couple of four-star prospects in safety Bryan Allen Jr. and running back Jaydon Blue. Here is what ESPN had to say about the class the Longhorns have assembled up to this point:

After guiding one of the most high-powered attacks in college football as offensive coordinator at Alabama, Steve Sarkisian is now assembling his first full class as head coach at Texas. Offense defines this group early on. The Longhorns went to California for their quarterback, Maalik Murphy, a prospect with limited high school game experience thus far but someone who possesses some impressive physical traits, including a big arm. The class also features some big-play offensive targets from in-state: top-20 wide receiver Armani Winfield and two top-10 RBs in Jamarion Miller and Blue, who can be an explosive runner with good ball skills. Defense is not being overlooked either, as the Longhorns added one of the top defensive back prospects in the state in Allen, a top-five safety who is fluid with good instincts.

The Longhorns are likely pleased with the players they have currently committed, but are still in the mix for some high profile targets in ESPN’s rankings, such as five-star wide receiver Evan Stewart, four-star cornerback Denver Harris, five-star offensive lineman Devon Campbell, and four-star offensive lineman Kam Dewberry.

It’s crucial for Texas to land a few of those names.

After the previous coaching staff issues and underwhelming results on the field for the last decade, it’s understandable that recruits will want results from the program before they can fully commit to suit up in the burnt orange.

Texas commit Maalik Murphy’s highlights from first game of season

Despite some struggles, Texas commit Maalik Murphy had a few bright spots in his season opener.

A potential future quarterback for the Longhorns played his first game of his senior season last night, but how did he do?

Texas commit Maalik Murphy, a four-star prospect according to 247Sports, is someone who has very limited experience as a varsity starter. His junior season was cut short last year and prior to that had saw limited action. The California native plays for local high school Junipero Serra, who had their first game of the season against Orange Lutheran on Friday night. Murphy was unable to overcome some tough breaks, as his team lost 31-20.

The game was a messy one according to 247Sports’ Mike Roach, who attended to scout the future Longhorn. Murphy was dealt with a tough hand prior to the game, as his best receiver was out due to COVID-19, and it only got worse during the game.

He would go on to lose his best playmaker and fellow four-star Texas target Rodrick Pleasant, who suffered an injury on the first drive. Roach also reported that his No. 3 receiver would go down later in the game with an injury as well. Murphy’s offensive line also struggled mightily, which had the future Texas quarterback constantly under pressure.

Roach also explained that the officiating was very questionable at times, as Murphy threw what looked to be a touchdown pass, but was later called incomplete after the receiver dove and rolled to catch the pass. His team also lost a fumble in which Roach viewed the running back as clearly down.

However, Roach did say that Murphy himself looked much improved since the last time that he saw him play in the spring. Here is what Roach had to say about Murphy’s performance:

I thought he improved on a few things that plagued him in the spring. Overall, the game seemed to be slowing down for him, and it showed outside of two bad moments. There were multiple times in the spring when Murphy felt pressure and either retreated for a big loss or forced a pass into coverage. He also seemed to struggle with timing and ball placement. Overall, I thought he was much better when it came to those two areas, and it looked like the offense they designed was more quarterback-friendly and helped to mask some of the deficiencies they had on the team.

Roach would later go on to identify what Murphy still needs to work on.

Now for the bad. There are still times when he thinks his incredible arm strength can do just about anything. Twice tonight he tried to make a play and threw interceptions. On his first, he saw the safety sinking and even though he was close enough to break on the ball, Murphy tried to drive it in there thinking he could fit it in. He admitted after the game that he went “Brett Favre” on that one. His second forced ball came on the last drive of the game when he tried to throw a deep post into double coverage with the clock ticking down and Serra needing two scores. He seemed more upset at that throw than the first interception and took the blame on himself.

Murphy did not have the game he wanted and happened to throw a couple interceptions. However, he still showed glimpses of what has Steve Sarkisian and Longhorn fans excited over his potential, making some great throws and rushing and passing for a touchdown. Let’s take a look at some of Murphy’s highlights from his first game of the season.

Texas lands commitment from five-star point guard Arterio Morris

Chris Beard is unstoppable! Texas lands a commitment from an elite 2022 prospect in five-star point guard Arterio Morris.

Chris Beard is working his recruiting magic again.

On Saturday, the Longhorns picked up their first commit of the 2022 class in five-star point guard Arterio Morris.

The former Memphis commit is out of Lewisville, Texas and attends iSchool Entrepreneurial Academy. He is an electrifying player that has drawn comparisons to Ja Morant. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound point guard is ranked the No. 21 overall player in the 2022 class and the No. 4 overall player in the state of Texas according to 247Sports.

Morris chose Texas over Kansas, Oregon, and Georgia.

His commitment is just what Texas needs, as they will lose veteran guards such as Courtney Ramey, Andrew Jones, and Jase Ferbes after this season. Take a look at his sophomore mixtape to see how shifty and high-flying Morris is already.

Morris’ commitment is a great sign for Beard and his staff, as they are already attracting top high school talent without even playing a game yet. Texas’ 2022 class has the potential to be the highest ranked class since 2019, when the Longhorns hauled in the No. 17 class in the nation.

Texas OL target Cameron Williams announces top three schools

Can the Longhorns keep adding to their stacked 2022 class?

Just one day after receiving a crystal ball in favor of the Longhorns, offensive lineman Cameron Williams announced the final three schools left in his recruitment prior to his scheduled commitment date of July 1.

Williams is a four-star offensive tackle in the 2022 recruiting class according to ESPN and he is fresh off of an official visit to Texas on June 25. The Duncanville High School product will be choosing between Texas, Oklahoma and Oregon.

Williams has the college lineman build already, as he currently is listed at 6-foot-5, 360-pounds. He has been a pivotal piece of Duncanville’s success and was named the District 8-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore.

He is an underrated prospect and possesses the skillset to play higher than his projections. If Texas is able to land Williams, he has the potential to develop into a starter under one of the top offensive line coaches in the country in Kyle Flood.

If Williams announces his commitment to the Longhorns on July 1, he would become the 13th member of Texas’ star-filled class of 2022, and the second this week, as the Longhorns gained a commitment from four-star running back Jamarion Miller on Monday. The class currently ranks No. 6 in the nation and No. 1 in the Big 12 according to 247Sports rankings.
