One thought about every Thunder player who played in Summer League

Here’s a quick thought on all 17 players.

The Oklahoma City Thunder concludes their 2022 summer league this past week after participating in two different ones in Salt Lake City and the traditional Las Vegas ones.

17 players suited up for the Thunder that ranged from No. 2 pick Chet Holmgren to Kevin Kangu, who was signed while the team was already playing games.

While the results of games don’t matter and not much should be taken seriously in summer league, it’s still a nice group of games to see how players look like playing against somewhat NBA talent.

Let’s give each player one thought about their summer league as the Thunder prepare for training camp to get ready for the 2022-23 regular season.

OKC Thunder player grades: Jaylin Williams, Vit Krejci only rostered players to play in summer league loss to Pelicans

This was certainly the final Summer League game.

The Oklahoma City Thunder finished their 2022 summer league with a 107-71 defeat to the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday.

This was the ultimate summer league experience as the Thunder played just two players who are currently rostered on the team with just one of them having any NBA experience at all.

The Thunder only decided to let seven players step on the court this game as this was an opportunity for a lot of the roster bubble and undrafted players to get some actual minutes.

Let’s take a look at player grades as the Thunder prepare to leave Las Vegas.

Thunder announce Ousmane Dieng suffered wrist fracture, expected to return by training camp

Ousmane Dieng is expected to be ready by the beginning of the season.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Friday that rookie forward Ousmane Dieng suffered a slight chip fracture on his wrist and will miss the remainder of Summer League but is expected to make a full recovery by training camp.

This news comes after Dieng had his best Summer League showing last game out against the Sacramento Kings as he scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting as one of the lead ball-handlers.

The Thunder also announced that Tre Mann suffered a left ankle sprain and is ruled out for Friday’s Summer League game against the Golden State Warriors. Mann left the last game due to an ankle injury and was not able to return.

OKC Thunder player grades: Ousmane Dieng, Tre Mann play best game in summer league win over Kings

Ousmane Dieng and Tre Mann took advantage of their ball-handling possessions.

The Oklahoma City Thunder were able to escape Wednesday with a summer league win over the Sacramento Kings, 86-80.

The Thunder led comfortably for most of the game, but a 27-18 scoring advantage by the Kings in the fourth quarter was a cause of concern for a win.

Either way, the result of the game was inconsequential. The bright spots from this win was the fact that Tre Mann and Ousmane Dieng — two players who’ve struggled offensively so far in summer league — had their best games by far.

Let’s take a look at player grades as the Thunder win their fourth summer league game.

OKC Thunder player grades: Chet Holmgren highlights summer league win over Magic

Chet Holmgren & Josh Giddey continue to make the Thunder a must-watch Summer League team.

The Oklahoma City Thunder were able to escape Monday night with a three-point, 84-81 summer league win over the Orlando Magic.

The Magic had three shots to tie the game back up in the final 21 seconds but weren’t able to convert on any of their three-point attempts.

Alas, while the game was a fun watch, it’s more important to take away that this was the best offensive game Chet Holmgren has played since his summer league debut. Josh Giddey also continues to play despite being too good for it.

Let’s take a look at player grades for this summer league win.

Isaiah Joe stands out again for Sixers in loss to Raptors in Las Vegas

Third-year wing Isaiah Joe led the Sixers with 24 points in the game. He connected on 7 of his 9 three-point attempts and shot 1-for-5 on two-point baskets.

The Philadelphia 76ers opened their Las Vegas slate of the 2022 NBA Summer League against the Toronto Raptors on Saturday.

The basketball was not pretty for either team, with both teams going on lopsided runs at different points throughout the affair. Toronto went on a 16-0 run in the first quarter; Philadelphia went on a 15-0 run in the second quarter; Toronto outscored Philadelphia 26-7 in the fourth quarter to send the Sixers to a 97-77 defeat.

Third-year wing Isaiah Joe led the Sixers with 24 points in the game. He connected on 7 of his 9 three-point attempts and shot 1-for-5 on two-point baskets.

Here are some observations from the loss.

OKC Thunder sign Kevin Kangu for Summer League roster

The Oklahoma City Thunder added Kevin Kangu to the Summer League roster.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Friday that they have signed guard Kevin Kangu onto the 2022 summer league roster.

Kangu will be able to play games in Las Vegas, Nevada with the team. Kangu, who was born in Canada, spent three seasons in college between Oakland and Lenoir-Rhyne.

In 64 career college games, Kangu averaged 4.2 points, 2.2 assists and 1.6 rebounds on 31.2 percent shooting.

The Thunder are currently scheduled to play four games in Las Vegas between July 9-15. Kangu is likely just a summer league body who will absorb minutes. Best case scenario for him is to impress enough to receive an invitation for training camp.

OKC Thunder player grades: Josh Giddey collects triple double in 87-71 Summer League win over Grizzlies

Josh Giddey, Chet Holmgren highlight Summer League win over Grizzlies.

The Oklahoma City Thunder won their second straight summer league game against the Memphis Grizzlies, 87-71.

After a dazzling summer league debut that dominated the NBA discourse, No. 2 pick Chet Holmgren came back down to Earth a little bit with a decent performance.

Holmgren looked tired out by the second half and after playing a combined 46 minutes in a 24-hour time span, he will likely sit out Thursday’s Salt Lake City finale against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Josh Giddey and Jalen Williams were the other two players who stood out outside of Holmgren once again. Giddey continues to show that he’s too talented to play summer league games as he collected a triple double and Williams continues to score the ball efficiently.

Let’s take a look at player grades as the Thunder win their second game in as many days.

NBA assistant coach sounds off on Chet Holmgren’s weight following summer league debut

An NBA assistant coach doubts Chet Holmgren will be able to handle playing in the NBA due to his skinny frame.

Despite having one of the greatest summer league debut performances in history, the skeptics are still strong with No. 2 pick Chet Holmgren when it comes to his skinny frame.

One of the bigger criticisms for Holmgren has been his lanky size: He is 7 feet, 1 inch yet just 195 pounds.

Tuesday’s summer league win against the Utah Jazz should quiet those criticisms a bit. Holmgren dominated his matchups against Kofi Cockburn and Tacko Fall — two players who have 100-plus pounds on him.

Apparently, that was not enough as an NBA assistant coach doubted Holmgren’s ability to withstand the physicality of the NBA. In SI’s Chris Mannix’s recent article, an NBA assistant coach sounded off on Holmgren.

“‘I’m not sold on him being a star,’ said an NBA assistant sitting courtside for Holmgren’s debut. ‘He’s obviously an excellent shooter, skilled, but he is so physically weak. He can’t get by his defender, and he realized that early and settled for threes the rest of game. He’s so thin in hips and legs that he makes (teammate) Poku (Aleksej Pokuševski) look like he has thick legs. I don’t think he’ll ever fill out. He will need to make difficult shots this season to have a good year because he settles for jumpers and can’t play inside. He was able to use his length to block shots on drivers tonight, but NBA guys will just get into his body. He has a long way to go.'”

Time will tell if the concerns are legitimate or overblown, but for one night, Holmgren silenced the doubters — even if it was just a summer league game.

NBA Twitter: Kevin Durant impressed by Chet Holmgren’s Summer League debut

A Thunder legend from the past compliments a hopeful Thunder legend of the future.

The buzz around the NBA Tuesday night and Wednesday morning centered around No. 2 Chet Holmgren going off in his summer league debut.

In an Oklahoma City Thunder blowout win, Holmgren finished with 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting that included going 4-of-6 shooting from outside while also adding seven rebounds, four assists and a summer-league-record six blocks.

Holmgren’s game was so impressive, that even Kevin Durant had to show some love on Twitter.

Durant spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Thunder, where he won his sole MVP award in 2014.

To see that Durant — one of the greatest 15 players ever — compliment your game must be pretty special for Holmgren.
