NBA assistant coach sounds off on Chet Holmgren’s weight following summer league debut

An NBA assistant coach doubts Chet Holmgren will be able to handle playing in the NBA due to his skinny frame.

Despite having one of the greatest summer league debut performances in history, the skeptics are still strong with No. 2 pick Chet Holmgren when it comes to his skinny frame.

One of the bigger criticisms for Holmgren has been his lanky size: He is 7 feet, 1 inch yet just 195 pounds.

Tuesday’s summer league win against the Utah Jazz should quiet those criticisms a bit. Holmgren dominated his matchups against Kofi Cockburn and Tacko Fall — two players who have 100-plus pounds on him.

Apparently, that was not enough as an NBA assistant coach doubted Holmgren’s ability to withstand the physicality of the NBA. In SI’s Chris Mannix’s recent article, an NBA assistant coach sounded off on Holmgren.

“‘I’m not sold on him being a star,’ said an NBA assistant sitting courtside for Holmgren’s debut. ‘He’s obviously an excellent shooter, skilled, but he is so physically weak. He can’t get by his defender, and he realized that early and settled for threes the rest of game. He’s so thin in hips and legs that he makes (teammate) Poku (Aleksej Pokuševski) look like he has thick legs. I don’t think he’ll ever fill out. He will need to make difficult shots this season to have a good year because he settles for jumpers and can’t play inside. He was able to use his length to block shots on drivers tonight, but NBA guys will just get into his body. He has a long way to go.'”

Time will tell if the concerns are legitimate or overblown, but for one night, Holmgren silenced the doubters — even if it was just a summer league game.

SI’s Chris Mannix mentions the Thunder as possible Quin Snyder landing spot for next year

“One location that was mentioned to me by someone that knows Quin Snyder: Oklahoma City.”

In a recent appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix spoke about former Utah Jazz Quin Snyder and possible new destinations for him. Snyder is arguably the hottest name out there in terms of available head coaches, but with the Charlotte Hornets being the only team in the league with a head coaching vacancy, odds are Snyder sits out at least this upcoming season.

Mannix brought up the popular San Antonio Spurs theory of Snyder becoming the heir of Gregg Popovich but also mentioned the Oklahoma City Thunder as a possible destination — a team that hasn’t been mentioned up until Mannix said so.

“Well, I don’t think he lands in Charlotte, which is the last vacant coaching opening. I think Quin — like a lot of assistant coaches or available coaches — are waiting to see what Gregg Popovich does, whether it’s this year or next year. One location that was mentioned to me by someone that knows Quin Snyder: Oklahoma City. That team has a coach right now, but depending on how this season goes, the Thunder may look to make a change next year. Quin Snyder has a great relationship with Sam Presti. So that’s a possibility.”

Presti and Snyder having an established relationship shouldn’t be surprising considering they both spent time with the Spurs. The idea of the Thunder moving on from Mark Daigneault after a clear rebuilding season next year would be a little shocking. But if Presti believes the Thunder are ready to take the next step towards contention, then Snyder can take the team there.

Video: Mannix, Mora: Evander Holyfield’s return to ring

Video: Mannix, Mora: Evander Holyfield’s return to ring.

Former heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield, 58, will meet 47-year-old Kevin McBride in an exhibition on June 5, the latest fight involving retired boxers.

Holyfield is following the lead of former rival Mike Tyson, whose bout with Roy Jones Jr. in November was a commercial success.

Is the new trend of geezers climbing back into the ring a good idea? And will fans be interested in seeing Holyfield face an obscure fighter like McBride, who was Tyson’s last opponent in a sanctioned bout.

In this episode of Jabs with Mannix and Mora, DAZN commentators Chris Mannix and Sergio Mora try to answer those questions.

Here’s what they had to say.

One fight that has been discussed for years is Amir Khan vs. Kell Brook.

And why not? Khan and Brook are two of the more accomplished fighters of  their era, they’re around the same weight and they are both English. It’s a natural matchup.

However, as they approach the end of their careers, they have yet to meet in the ring. Is now finally the time for it to happen?

In this episode of Jabs with Mannix and Mora, DAZN commentators Chris Mannix and Sergio Mora discuss the potential matchup and whether fans are still interested in seeing it.
