NFL sets the Browns-Ravens game in Week 15 for a Saturday kickoff

The Browns will host the Ravens on Saturday, December 17th

The NFL set the date and time for a few December games that had remained in “to be determined” status on Monday. One such game is the matchup between the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens at FirstEnergy Stadium in Week 15.

The AFC North matchup is now scheduled as part of a Saturday tripleheader to be broadcast on the NFL Network. Cleveland will host Baltimore on Saturday, December 17th at 4:30 p.m. ET.

It’s the middle game of the tripleheader, coming after the Colts visit the Vikings and before the Dolphins vs. Bills nightcap. Baltimore won the first meeting back in Week 7, beating Cleveland 23-20.

Get out the calendars and adjust accordingly.

Kirk Herbstreit releases college football top 6 team rankings following Week 4

Do you have the same top four?

Week 4 of college football has come and gone and with it goes FBS contests for the month of September.  What do we know a month into the 2022 season?  And what do we still have to find out?  It would appear plenty in both categories.

Week 4 saw No. 6 Oklahoma get knocked off at home as Adrian Martinez and Kansas State proved unstoppable for Brent Venables and company.  Elsewhere USC escaped Oregon State with a hard fought victory despite their offense having nowhere near their A-game.

AlabamaGeorgia, and Ohio State, cruised to victories while Michigan perhaps had more of a test than most would have thought against Maryland.

How did the weekend make Kirk Herbstreit feel about the College Football Playoff outlook?

Here is who Herbstreit ranked as his top-six college football teams on Sunday.

Oklahoma No. 4 in final ESPN SP+ projections ahead of 2022 season

ESPN’s Bill Connelly updated his SP+; where do the Oklahoma Sooners and their opponents stand in the final projections of the preseason?

Week 0 is upon us! The start of the 2022 college football season is here. Though the Oklahoma Sooners will not kick off against the UTEP Miners for another 13 days (and counting), we get football this week.

Week 0 provides a fantastic opportunity to check out two of Oklahoma’s first three opponents. On Aug. 27, the Nebraska Cornhuskers take on Big Ten foe Northwestern, and UTEP will face North Texas.

With the season getting underway this week, Bill Connelly of ESPN updated his SP+ ratings (ESPN+) for a final look ahead of the 2022 season.

The Oklahoma Sooners come in at No. 4 behind Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State, the top three teams in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25. However, Georgia and Ohio State are flipped in the polls compared to the SP+ ratings.

Oklahoma moved up a spot from the last update in May.

The Sooners have the highest projected win total in the Big 12 at 9.8. The next closest is Oklahoma State with a projected win total of 8.3.

As always: SP+ is a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. It is a predictive measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football, not a résumé ranking, and, along those same lines, these projections aren’t intended to be a guess at what the AP Top 25 will look like at the end of the year. These are simply early offseason power rankings based on the information we have been able to gather to date. – Connelly, ESPN

Here’s a look at where each team on Oklahoma’s 2022 schedule ranks in the ESPN SP+ rating and their projected win total for the season.

Chiefs 2022 schedule preview, Week 12: Rams

Our @Nicolas_Roesch takes an early look at the #Chiefs’ Week 12 opponent and some things to monitor as the #Rams progress through training camp.

In Week 12, the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams in a rematch of one of the greatest games from the 2018 NFL season.

The Rams have one of the most talented rosters in the league and are all in for a repeat. They restructured superstar defensive tackle Aaron Donald’s contract, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league. They also bolstered their wide receiving corps by signing former Pro Bowler Allen Robinson, making an already dangerous offense even better.

Although Los Angeles has plenty of playmaking weapons, they did lose a couple of key pieces along their offensive line after Andrew Whitworth retired and Austin Corbett left in free agency. Longtime backup Joseph Noteboom will try to fill Whitworth’s shoes and rookie Logan Bruss will compete to fill the void left by Corbett.

The Rams also lost a couple of key defenders in tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day, linebacker Von Miller and cornerback Darious Williams. They made a big splash signing for their linebacker corps, however, inking linebacker Bobby Wagner to a five-year, $65 million contract. With those moves in mind, let’s take a look at some of the Rams’ key players and their outlooks heading into the regular season:

Notre Dame just outside top four in CBS 1-131 preseason poll

Even with the extremely difficult opener at Ohio State you can see Notre Dame’s path to the CFP in 2022.

In college football these days it’s all about being ranked in the top four by the time the regular season comes to an end.  How you get there doesn’t matter nearly as much as the simple fact you do and that you earn the College Football Playoff berth with it.

Notre Dame has earned a berth to the CFP twice to date and if things fall right, could earn a third this season.  However, tough tasks await as a few of the best programs in all of college football appear on Notre Dame’s schedule this fall.

Chip Patterson of CBS Sports released his 1-131 preseason college football poll and he had Notre Dame just outside that all-important top four as they ranked sixth.  Perhaps just as importantly, two Notre Dame opponents for 2022 were ranked ahead of the Irish as Clemson checked in fifth and Ohio State second.

Patterson put USC 12th, BYU just outside the top 25 at 26, and then no 2022 Notre Dame opponents appeared again until North Carolina checks in at 46.

The rest of Notre Dame’s 2022 opponents were ranked as follows:

55. Boston College
71. Stanford
75. Cal
76. Marshall
89. Syracuse
103. Navy
116. UNLV

It’s very top-heavy as you can tell but plenty manageable at the same time.  Even with a loss at Ohio State to open the year Notre Dame’s talent should be good enough to win 10 games if not more this regular season.

And if it’s more then the powers that be will have a hard time keeping Notre Dame out of the CFP with an 11-1 mark against the likes of Ohio State, Clemson, USC, and BYU.

Auburn basketball adds Georgia State to nonconference schedule

Auburn last played Georgia State in 2016, beating them 83-65.

Auburn basketball is about to start their season with a trip to Israel, but they are still putting the finishing touches on the rest of their schedule.

On Thursday they announced that Auburn will host Georgia State in Neville Arena on Dec. 14. It is the Tigers 12th nonconference game to be scheduled for the 2022-23 regular season.

The game will come after the Tigers travel to Atlanta to face Memphis in the Holiday Hoopsgiving event on Dec. 10 and before they start their West Coast trip, playing USC on Dec. 18 and Washington on Dec. 21.

Auburn will have four-straight home games to start the season, opening with George Mason on Nov. 7, then USF on Nov. 11, and Winthrop on Nov. 15 before the game against Texas Southern on Nov. 18.

After that stretch, they will head to Cancun, Mexico for a Nov. 22 game against Bradley. That will be followed by a matchup against either Northwestern or Liberty on Nov. 23.

They will then play a home game against Saint Louis on Nov. 27 before heading to Atlanta for the matchup with Memphis. After their game with Georgia State and the trip out West, they have one more nonconference game scheduled, a showdown with West Virginia.

The final scheduled non-conference game is against West Virginia on Jan. 28, when the Tigers will head to Morgantown, West Virginia, to take on the Mountaineers in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

We know who Auburn will play in their 18 conference games, but not when. The Tigers will have home-and-home meetings against Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Texas A&M next season. They will host Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi State, and Missouri at Neville Arena, and have road matchups against Kentucky, LSU, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt.

ESPN FPI projections for entire Notre Dame season

Which projection is the most surprising to you?

Yesterday we spent a good amount of time here at Fighting Irish Wire discussing if holding Marcus Freeman to a 10-2 standard was fair in his first year, and if Notre Dame were to finish with that mark, if it’d feel like an accomplishment or like a disappointment.

Today, ESPN released their FPI game-by-game predictions for the 2022 season which included what they think Notre Dame’s chances are to win each of their 12 regular season contests.

Here are the chances ESPN‘s FPI give Notre Dame in all 12 games and at the end we’ll share how some of those numbers compare to other powerhouse programs entering the year.

Breaking down Auburn’s game-by-game predictions using the FPI

The FPI believes strongly in the 2022 Auburn Tigers football team.

We are approaching the 2022 college football season and the Auburn Tigers have retribution on their minds.

The 2021 campaign ended about as poorly as it can get with five-straight losses after beginning 6-2. There will be a new quarterback under center when the season begins after three-year starter Bo Nix opted to join the Oregon Ducks.

A former Ducks quarterback, Robby Ashford, is among the list of players fighting to take the starting job. Many believe it will be former Texas A&M QB Zach Calzada that ultimately takes the job. The dynamic duo at running back is looking to carry the load with Tank Bigsby and last year’s standout freshman Jarquez Hunter.

The defense could be the stronger unit for head coach Bryan Harsin with Derick Hall and Colby Wooden leading the charge. Nehemiah Pritchett is hoping to fill the void left by Roger McCreary, who was drafted in the second round by the Tennessee Titans.

Recently former Auburn offensive lineman Cole Cubelic and former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy discussed the potential record for the upcoming season. Both are higher on the Tigers than the general consensus. Even the Football Power Index generated by ESPN has high hopes for this team in year two of the Bryan Harsin era.

We break it down game-by-game:

Here’s how the 14 offenses on Detroit’s 2022 schedule stack up.

The Detroit Lions defense is changing its base scheme and promises to be a more aggressive, attacking unit in the second year under coordinator Aaron Glenn.

They’re in for quite a few challenges in the 2022 season. The Lions have several potent offenses on the 17-game docket. Which ones are the best, and which ones figure to be easier for the new-look Lions defense to handle?

Here’s how the 14 offenses on Detroit’s 2022 schedule stack up, from worst to best.
