Texas A&M rises in the newest ‘CBS Sports 133’ rankings ahead of the 2023 season

Ahead of the 2023 CFB season, the newest “CBS Sports 133” has Texas A&M among the Top 25 teams in the country

Ah yes, we’re finally near the offseason finish line as the 2023 college football season is less than a month away, and for Texas A&M, their pivotal bounce-back campaign starts on Saturday, Sept. 2, against New Mexico inside what should be a packed Kyle Field.

With fall camps beginning all across the country this week. Head Coach Jimbo Fisher led his 2023 roster on the field for their first official practice on Wednesday afternoon; new OC Bobby Petrino’s influence on Aggies’ talented pieces on offense will likely be seen in the coming practices, leading up to Sunday’s open practice to the media and the public on Sunday, Aug. 6.

Loaded at nearly every position, the quarterback battle between Conner Weigman and Max Johnson is the storyline that will continue to dominate the headlines this month. As the competition is much closer than many of us in Aggie media assumed, Weigman, who is entering his sophomore year, finished the 2022 season on a high note with eight touchdowns and zero interceptions in five games played.

This week, CBS Sports writer Chip Patterson released his newest version of the site’s annual “CBS Sports 133” rankings, and even after the Aggies’ dreadful 5-7 (2-6 SEC) slogfest of a season, the shear potential the roster presents, specifically the talented 2022 recruiting class’s “Baptism by fire” campaign while playing extensive minutes on both sides of the ball, gaining valuable experience in the process.

Finishing the 2022 season ranked 71st, Texas A&M has risen 47 spots to No. 24 in the Patterson’s current rankings, and echoing the same message we at Aggies Wire have tried to convey all summer, last season’s results were simply a brief digression apart of a much bigger plan moving forward.

Last season’s 5-7 showing was an aberration compared to how most teams finish with a roster as talented as that of Texas A&M. This adjustment recognizes that talent will likely deliver more wins than a year ago and notes what could be a positive spark for the offense in the hire of Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator.

How quickly Bobby Petrino’s impact on the Aggies’ offense will take effect is up in the air, though knowing his background and the players he has at his disposal, the sky is truly the limit.

Second-year defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin has also taken over coaching linebackers, a postion of great struggle last season, while the defensive line led by senior DT McKinnley Jackson is one of the deepest groups in the country. The pieces are there for much more than a rebound season; just how well they fit together during the entire 12-game slate is the remaining question.

According to CBS Sports, Texas A&M is ‘among the hardest teams to place’ in the 2023 preseason polls

According to CBS Sports, Texas A&M is a confusing team to rank in a preseason poll ahead of their pivotal 2023 season.

Texas A&M’s 2023 football season has become the offseasons’ hottest talking point, headlined by the program’s attempt to rebound after their underwhelming 2022 5-7 (2-6 SEC) campaign, combined with Jimbo Fisher’s hiring of Bobby Petrino as the new offensive coordinator, which after merely existing as a simple news story last December, has resulted in an apparent “battle of the egos.’ between Fisher and Petrino.

Earlier this week, CBS Sports writer Chip Patterson compiled an informative list compiled of every team he believes is the most difficult to place in the upcoming major preseason poll releases next month, and to no surprise, Texas A&M’s 2022 results put any progress on hold, making them one of the more confusing teams to gauge ahead of their Sept. 2 season opener.

To accurately create his list, Patterson utilized several trusted college football experts and magazines, who have already released their preseason rankings ahead of AP and USA Today Sports.

“For our research, we were not limited to only traditional preseason magazines but some early power ratings and rankings as well for additional input. What we’ve found are seven teams that will be receiving significant top-25 consideration heading into the year … but with enough question marks to spark some real debate on where they fall. We’ll begin near the top of the rankings and work our way down, analyzing the reasons no one can seem to agree on each team.”

Focusing on Texas A&M’s 2022 offensive woes, ranking 101st in the country last season, Patterson geared his focus toward just how successful Jimbo Fisher and Bobby Petrino’s pairing will transpire in 2023 and if both offensive mindsets can avoid clashing instead of fusing.

“Jimbo Fisher’s time at SEC Media Days already brought this unique pairing into focus, with neither confirmation nor a denial on whether he would be handing over the play-calling duties to Petrino, the high-profile offensive coordinator hire that many Texas A&M fans have called for in recent years. While Texas A&M has been recruiting at a high level since Fisher arrived, the results — aside from a top-five finish in 2020 — have been middling, with a 5-7 showing in 2022 providing the “rock bottom” moment that sparked the hire of Petrino.

If you believe that Texas A&M’s close losses will flip to wins with the change in offensive approach, then Texas A&M occupies a spot in the top 15, with Phil Steele positioning the Aggies as high as No. 11. But the Aggies also check in at No. 20 (Athlon) and No. 30 (Lindy’s) in other rankings as those publications take a wait-and-see approach to what should be a bounce-back year in College Station.”

Fisher may not have explicitly stated that he would relinquish the play-calling duties to Petrino, but look, he hired him for that reason, and for those who watched the Maroon and White Spring game, Bobby Petrino’s presence in both offenses was hard to miss.

2022, as Patterson reminded us, was indeed an all-time-low in Fisher’s tenure with the program, and let’s be honest; with a loaded returning roster, ranked 8th in the country in returning production with 16 starters coming back (eight offense, eight defense), outside of a complete catastrophe, a rebound from five measly wins is almost guaranteed.

CBS Sports ranks Aggies in the Top 50 teams in College Football ahead of Week 7

CBS Sports ranks Aggies in of Top 50 teams in College Football ahead of Week 7

In the midst of Texas A&M’s bye week ahead of week 7 of the 2022 college football season, the team is sitting at 3-3, and 1-2 in the SEC, opening up the second half of the season on Oct. 22nd, where their long road trip continues to face the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia, South Carolina.

After dropping out of every major ranking system after their week 5 loss to Mississippi State, The Aggies lost their third game, and second in a row to the then No.1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide last Saturday, yet played what was perhaps their most encouraging game from a team evaluation perspective, gaining some respect back from the national public after nearly defeating the Tide in the final 3 seconds of the contest.

On Monday, CBS Sports writer Chip Patterson released his brand new complete college football rankings, including all 131 FBS teams, where the Aggies found themselves dropping all the way to 43 in these rankings after their 42-24 loss to Mississippi State. This week, even after a loss, Texas A&M rose one spot to 42, with the chance to gain some momentum with six games remaining, while awaiting their return to Kyle Field against Ole Miss on Oct. 29th.

Notre Dame just outside top four in CBS 1-131 preseason poll

Even with the extremely difficult opener at Ohio State you can see Notre Dame’s path to the CFP in 2022.

In college football these days it’s all about being ranked in the top four by the time the regular season comes to an end.  How you get there doesn’t matter nearly as much as the simple fact you do and that you earn the College Football Playoff berth with it.

Notre Dame has earned a berth to the CFP twice to date and if things fall right, could earn a third this season.  However, tough tasks await as a few of the best programs in all of college football appear on Notre Dame’s schedule this fall.

Chip Patterson of CBS Sports released his 1-131 preseason college football poll and he had Notre Dame just outside that all-important top four as they ranked sixth.  Perhaps just as importantly, two Notre Dame opponents for 2022 were ranked ahead of the Irish as Clemson checked in fifth and Ohio State second.

Patterson put USC 12th, BYU just outside the top 25 at 26, and then no 2022 Notre Dame opponents appeared again until North Carolina checks in at 46.

The rest of Notre Dame’s 2022 opponents were ranked as follows:

55. Boston College
71. Stanford
75. Cal
76. Marshall
89. Syracuse
103. Navy
116. UNLV

It’s very top-heavy as you can tell but plenty manageable at the same time.  Even with a loss at Ohio State to open the year Notre Dame’s talent should be good enough to win 10 games if not more this regular season.

And if it’s more then the powers that be will have a hard time keeping Notre Dame out of the CFP with an 11-1 mark against the likes of Ohio State, Clemson, USC, and BYU.

CBS Sports recently published a list of seven college football quarterback battles to follow during 2022 spring practice.

The first school highlighted on the list is Clemson and the QB competition between rising junior D.J. Uiagalelei and five-star freshman Cade Klubnik.

“One of the biggest storylines in all of college football in 2022 is whether Clemson can reclaim its position as a title contender after failing to win the ACC and reach the College Football Playoff for the first time in seven years,” CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson wrote. “Getting back to the top starts with solidifying the quarterback position after Uiagalelei threw more interceptions (10) than touchdowns (nine) and finished last in the ACC in passer rating among eligible quarterbacks as a sophomore. The drop-off of the Clemson passing attack was a stunner considering not only the raw talent at wide receiver, but the fact that Uiagalelei had starred in relief of Trevor Lawrence in two starts the year prior.”

Following his stellar freshman debut in 2020 when he threw for 781 yards and four touchdowns with no picks in two starts vs. Boston College and Notre Dame, while rushing for two more scores in those contests, Uiagalelei completed 55.6 percent of his passes for 2,246 yards and nine touchdowns with 10 interceptions in 13 starts last season.

Klubnik, who enrolled early at Clemson in January, completed 71.3 percent of his passes for 3,251 yards and 43 touchdowns against just three interceptions as a senior at Westlake High School (Austin, Texas) in 2021, despite missing three games with an injury. He also rushed 70 times for 465 yards and 12 scores.

The nation’s top-ranked QB in the 2022 class completed 70 percent of his career passes for 7,426 yards and 86 touchdowns vs. just seven interceptions, adding 197 carries for 1,319 rushing yards (6.7 avg.) and 31 touchdowns.

“Uiagalelei has welcomed the challenge from Klubnik, an early enrollee who was the top-rated quarterback in the 2022 class,” Patterson wrote. “The freshman brings the kind of pedigree that projects to high-level success, having been the first Texas high school quarterback to go undefeated while winning back-to-back 6A state tiles since Kyler Murray. Adding to the intrigue is the departure of offensive coordinator Tony Elliott and the promotion of quarterbacks Brandon Streeter as part of a reshuffling that could add new ideas not just to the quarterback position, but the offense as a whole.”

A change in philosophy has the Irish close to elite football status

When Brian Kelly suffered his worst season as Notre Dame head coach, he made changes immediately. They have really paid off

As the Irish step into their first, and most likely only, ACC conference season, there are plenty of questions along the way as to how Notre Dame will fare. Chip Patterson of CBS Sports tried to tackle how Brian Kelly will guide the Irish through this odd season.

Before Patterson got in-depth on how the Irish would do in conference play, still weird to say that, he looked at how they got to this point. Patterson singled out Kelly’s change in player development and recruiting since going 4-8 in 2016. The head coach addressed those issues and “the results were immediate, with Notre Dame going 33-5 over the last three seasons with three top-12 poll finishes and an appearance in the 2018 College Football Playoff.”

You can say that Kelly has really excelled with the change, not hoping the players improve, but instead putting an emphasis on drastic improvements. Patterson singled out linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and Kyren Williams as two players who have benefitted from new priorities. This led Patterson to come to the conclusion that “Notre Dame is uniquely built to overcome whatever obstacles are ahead in the 2020 season.”

That main obstacle being the Clemson Tigers, who pretty much own the ACC right now. Patterson knows that as “Clemson is still the odds-on favorite to win the league, but Notre Dame is too strong to think we can pencil in those two matchups as ‘win, win’ for the Tigers.”

Texas Football: ESPN and CBS drop predictions ahead of 2020 opener

With the season approaching the Texas Longhorns are preparing for the opener. CBS Sports and ESPN drop their Longhorns related predictions.

Saturday night in Austin at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium can’t get here fast enough. However, the impending kickoff isn’t stoping national media outlets like CBS Sports and ESPN from dropping their picks for the College Football Playoffs. First we will look at ESPN’s storylines for the upcoming Big 12 college football season. Mark Schlabach drops his picks from awards, to top games and biggest upsets.

Texas to finish 2nd

Ronald Martinez/Getty Images

Schlabach kicked off his storylines for the Big 12 with the order of finish. No surprises at the top with Oklahoma picked to win the conference for the sixth-year in a row. The top three seem to be well in line with what most of other outlets have put out.

  1. Oklahoma
  2. Texas
  3. Oklahoma State
  4. Texas Christian
  5. Iowa State

Texas set to finish second which means a Big 12 Championship appearance. It would be the last opportunity for senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger to take home the Big 12 crown much like the two best Longhorns passers before him. Schlabach continued with individual storylines for the conference.

Defensive Player of the Year: Joseph Ossai

Defensive Freshman of the Year: Alfred Collins

Coach on the hot seat: Tom Herman

Game of the Year: Texas vs Oklahoma (Oct. 10)

Upset of the Year: Texas vs Kansas State (Dec. 5)

In his three predictions, Longhorns are picked to upset the Sooners in the Cotton Bowl.

Sooners have won four of the past six games in the Red River Rivalry (along with a 12-point victory over Texas in the 2018 Big 12 championship game), but the contests in Dallas have been exceptionally close. Each of the past six were decided by a touchdown or less. This year’s matchup at the Cotton Bowl will come down to the wire again, so I’ll go with the more experienced quarterback in Longhorns senior Sam Ehlinger, who has already started four times against the Sooners. UT won’t go 2-0 against Oklahoma this season, however, as Spencer Rattler and OU’s improved defense will avenge the loss in the Big 12 title game to punch a ticket to the CFP for the fourth straight season. – Schlabach on the Red River Rivalry

Next we look to the College Football Playoff prediction from CBS Sports.
