Recruiting Update: Sooners gaining ground with top recruits

A look at the Sooners and updates on their pursuit of two homegrown talents and an out-of-state talent with strong Oklahoma ties.

The Oklahoma Sooners have not had an easy go of it this season but they’ve found ways to win games and still impress recruits. The Sooners on-field product hasn’t been the most aesthetically pleasing to watch but it’s getting results. Underneath those results, they are still finding ways to impress possible Sooners.

The Sooners recruiting has hardly taken a dip although their current product as a whole does not remotely resemble what they’ve been known for. However, recruiting goes on and the only way to remain relevant and near the top of college football as long as they have is to continue recruiting at a high level.

As it stands, the Sooners have the 12th ranked recruiting class in the country for 2022. They’ve hosted some significant targets on their recruiting big board over the last few weeks with names like four-star corner Gentry Williams, four-star defensive lineman Chris McClellan and five-star defensive lineman Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy. The Sooners have landed some excellent players in the 2022 class but a bonafide top seven recruiting class became increasingly hard when they lost commitments from their three receiver commits in Jordan Hudson (now committed to SMU), Talyn Shettron (now committed to Oklahoma State to play with his brother) and Luther Burden (likely a future UGA or Missouri commit.)

Those commitments over the summer took the steam out of a class that was shaping up to be elite. Good things come to those who wait and those who close in recruiting. The Sooners are closing in on the likes of Williams, McClellan, and Dindy as the fall rolls on.

Gentry Williams, a homegrown Oklahoma talent has had the Sooners and the USC Trojans jockeying back and for the most part due to his relationship with cornerback and interim head coach Donte Williams. USC’s future is very uncertain and that level of stability has not gone unnoticed as new crystal balls at 247Sports  have forecasted Williams to Oklahoma and a Rivals’ future cast has the Sooners as the landing spot now.

Another in-state star Chris McClellan was in town for the West Virginia game. The Sooners have been fighting off Florida and Ohio State the heaviest for his services. In the last week, he’s received a few crystal balls to classify him as an Oklahoma lean as it stands.

Last but certainly not least, another player with organic ties to the state of Oklahoma, five-star Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy. His parents are Oklahoma Sooners alums and the connection has been there since the beginning for Oklahoma.

They enter this final stretch in a heated battle with Texas A&M who employs his father as well. They are not to be counted out but a crystal ball from Steve Wiltfong (director of football recruiting for 247Sports) is absolutely nothing to scoff at. Dindy plans to make a decision soon as he has plans to be an early enrollee.

Just playing a bit of a guessing game but commitments from these would be more than enough to take Oklahoma from 12th into the top 10 of the 2022 rankings. That is not taking into account any receivers Oklahoma may try to flip or the possibility of running back Jovontae Barnes or Marvin Jones Jr who the Sooners are also in hot pursuit of.

The Sooners despite their troubles keeping three excellent receivers in the fold are well positioned to finish with at minimum a top ten recruiting class. As long they remember, recruiting is always about how you finish and not always how you start.

Texas moves up to No. 4 in ESPN’s 2022 recruiting class rankings

Texas’ 2022 recruiting class moves up in ESPN’s updated rankings.

Steve Sarkisian and his staff have had a phenomenal start with their first full recruiting cycle for Texas.

There is always expected to be some sort of drop off in recruiting when a new coaching staff takes over, but Sarkisian’s staff is composed of a few elite recruiters that are doing a great job of attracting big name prospects to play in Austin.

In ESPN’s updated 2022 recruiting class rankings (subscription required), the Longhorns moved up from No. 11 to No. 4 in the nation. This puts Texas ahead of schools such as Oregon, Ohio State, and Georgia while being behind programs like Alabama, Notre Dame, and Penn State.

This is primarily due to Texas’ success on the recruiting trail recently, where they’ve received four defensive line commitments in the last 30 days, all of which are four-star prospects. Here is what ESPN had to say about Texas’ 2022 class thus far:

After guiding one of the most high-powered attacks in college football as offensive coordinator at Alabama, Steve Sarkisian is now assembling his first full class as head coach at Texas. Offense defines this group early on. The Longhorns went to California for their quarterback, Maalik Murphy, a prospect who has a big arm. The class also features some big-play offensive targets from in-state: top-20 wide receiver Armani Winfield and two top-10 RBs in Jamarion Miller and Blue, who can be an explosive runner with good ball skills. Defense is not being overlooked either, as the Longhorns added one of the top defensive back prospects in the state in Bryan Allen Jr., a top-five safety who is fluid with good instincts. The Longhorns ended the summer by adding four ESPN 300 defensive linemen, including Bledsoe, a big man from a smaller school that brings high upside with flexibility and agility. Aaron Bryant was an out-of-state pickup that can be a physical and stout presence in the trenches.

Texas is still in the mix for a few other highly rated recruits that are labeled must-get prospects to close out the cycle, but the Longhorns badly need to perform on the field better than what they displayed against Arkansas. The more success this team has, the better the chances of attracting more top talent to the Forty Acres.

Arch Manning updates: LSU recruitment and a booming punt

LSU contacted Arch Manning as soon as the recruitment calendar allowed them to.

The turn of the calendar to Sept. 1 means that universities are allowed to begin contacting recruits from the class of 2023. Isidore Newman (New Orleans, La.) quarterback Arch Manning, the No. 1 prospect in the nation, received a message immediately.

Manning got a text from LSU as September began, according to 247Sports.

The Tigers, who have already offered the latest in the long lineage of elite quarterback talent, have stiff competition for Manning’s services. The five-star QB already has offers from the who’s-who of college football programs, including Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Ole Miss, Texas, and, of course, LSU.

Manning is 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds. A varsity starter as both a freshman and sophomore, he averaged 218 passing yards per game to go with 55 total touchdowns and 14 interceptions over his first two seasons. He made strides as a rusher last season, carrying the ball 38 times for 274 yards and eight touchdowns.

Newman vs. Riverside canceled

The Friday game between Newman and Riverside was canceled, according to WAFB. The Greenies, who have now had two cancelations, will hope to make their season debut this coming Friday against Vandebilt Catholic (Houma, La.), according to Houma Today.

Manning as a punter

Manning is known for his arm. His leg wants some of that recognition.

He boomed a punt during a scrimmage in late August:

That ability to get a quick punt off when needed makes his talent at the high school and potentially college level even more tantalizing.

Alabama football recruiting: Five-star LB Harold Perkins down to seven

Did Alabama make the cut for the talented five-star prospect?

The football season is underway, but that doesn’t mean the staff isn’t paying close attention to the recruiting trail.

Currently, Alabama sits with the sixth-ranked recruiting class in the 247 Composite Rankings.

Now, they are in the running for one of the top prospects in the entire 2022 class.

Five-star linebacker Harold Perkins released his top seven schools via Hayes Fawcett of On3 Recruits late last night and Alabama made the cut.

The Cypress, TX native is one of the most athletic linebackers in the entire country.

Along with Alabama, Perkins included LSU, Texas A&M, Texas, Oregon, Florida, and Southern California.

Can the Sooners close on one off the top defensive line prospects in the Class of 22?

The Oklahoma Sooners seem to have the inside track for five-star defensive tackle Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, but will they close the deal?

Oklahoma has had an interesting journey with their 2022 recruiting class. They started red hot with early commitments from three high quality wide receivers in Luther Burden, Talyn Shettron and Jordan Hudson. They brought  in running back/slot receiver Raleek Brown and then followed with a pledge from one of the other top five running backs in Gavin Sawchuk.

Fast forward to the first day of September. All three of those receivers are no longer committed. Hudson is an SMU commit and Shettron is locked in with Oklahoma State to play with his brother. Burden remains uncommitted but UGA, Missouri and Alabama are fighting for his services. OU still has a chance at a few other blue chip prospects despite the receiver recruiting fiasco. The biggest currently plays on the defensive line.

Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, defensive lineman from Lakeland, Florida, is within the Sooners grasp. The top 10 recruit is a force on the defensive line where he can line up at defensive tackle and slide outside and play the defensive end position. Bleacher Report thinks OU will eventually win the battle for Dindy.

Dindy, as previously mentioned has ties to Oklahoma. His parents are former graduates of of the University Oklahoma. He’s a true legacy to the university. However, defensive line coach and primary recruiter in this instance  Calvin Thibodeaux could not afford to let that do the work.

Thibodeaux along with Alex Grinch and Lincoln Riley have continuously plugged away at this recruitment. Dindy recently cut his list down to two schools: Texas A&M and Oklahoma.

A&M is currently the employer of his father, who has recently moved to College Station, Texas. There is real smoke that could keep the Aggies in the race.

Ultimately, like Bleacher Report suggests I think the Sooners win out if they produce on the field defensively. If guys like Jalen Redmond, Perrion Winfrey and Isaiah Thomas have monster years like many are expecting and help OU continue to revitalize how defense is played in Norman, Oklahoma, the Sooners will continue to have the inside track at the nation’s top defensive recruits.

Alabama recruiting: Tide makes top 7 for five-star DL Anthony Lucas

Alabama makes the cut for coveted DL prospect Anthony Lucas!

After a hot month in July, Alabama continues its prowl for the best of the best in the 2022 recruiting cycle.

Five-star defensive lineman Anthony Lucas has trimmed his list down to seven schools and Alabama made the cut. The Scottsdale, AZ native announced his list earlier today via Hayes Fawcett of On3 Recruits.

Standing at 6-foot-5, 280 pounds, Lucas is one of the most coveted defensive line prospects in the 2022 class. Lucas displays great athleticism for his size and has the ability to rush the passer from his interior defensive line position.

Along with Alabama, Lucas is also considering Miami, USC, Oregon, Texas A&M, LSU, and Notre Dame.

Michigan State football has officially won a key recruiting battle over a Big Ten rival for a Top-1000 recruit in the 2022 class. On Tuesday, 2022 3-star defensive lineman Chase ‘Simba’ Carter announced that he is committing to the Spartans after being heavily pursued by both MSU and Iowa.

[listicle id=32326]

Carter, who plays for Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, is the No. 6 ranked player in Minnesota by the 247Sports composite rankings and the No. 943 ranked player overall in his class. Carter fits the typical Mel Tucker lineman mold, standing at 6’6″, 215-pounds.

Carter also has Division I basketball offers so we might also see him suiting up for Tom Izzo.

Oh Duck, Notre Dame misses out on key ’22 wide receiver

Duck.

Notre Dame had been in fairly early in Anderson’s recruitment as he announced the Irish as a finalist just last month.  Anderson then visited Notre Dame, Penn State, and USC before Oregon on June 25 as the Ducks clearly made a big impression on the big-time recruit.

Notre Dame currently sits with 16 commitments in the 2022 recruiting class but just one wide receiver, Amorion Walker of Louisiana.

Anderson becomes the 13th commitment in Oregon’s 2022 cycle that currently ranks ninth on 247Sports.

Be sure to check out our friends at Ducks Wire for everything related to Oregon football.
