2022 NFL comp picks deadline is near, clearing the next Saints offseason hurdle

The New Orleans Saints are will clear the next hurdle of their offseason with protections for 2022 NFL draft compensatory picks in place.

The ink is still setting on the 2021 NFL draft picks but eyes are already looking towards 2022. And the Saints expect to be bigger players in next year’s draft than they were in the latest cycle, owing to their full compliment of picks plus a few compensatory selections. And with the NFL’s calendar continuing to move along, veteran free agents can be signed without impacting the comp pick formula beginning 3 p.m. CT on Monday, May 3.

That’s big news for New Orleans. The Saints have already locked in a comp pick next year for personnel executive Terry Fontenot (a third rounder), and Over The Cap’s experts project them to receive two more selections for defensive end Trey Hendrickson (fourth round) and interior rusher Sheldon Rankins (sixth round). We won’t know the exact placements until the NFL announces them next spring, but if all goes as expected the Saints could go into the 2022 draft with six picks in the first four rounds.

It clears another hurdle for the Saints’ offseason plan. They do need to make other moves to free up salary cap space so they can go sign more players — after adding 17 rookies between their draft class and undrafted free agent signings, they’ve filled 79 of 90 offseason roster spots — and that can be done with long-term extensions for highly-paid veterans like Ryan Ramczyk ($11 million cap hit), Marcus Williams $10.6 million), and Marshon Lattimore ($10.2 million). Here’s hoping one or two of those deals can be worked out soon.

As for which players the Saints could target after their 2022 comp picks are protected: Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman didn’t sound optimistic about a fit in New Orleans after the team traded up to Paulson Adebo in the third round, though he should be an option; other veteran corners still unsigned include ex-Charger Casey Heyward and former Steeler Steven Nelson. The Saints could also bring back Ken Crawley.

Keep an eye on other position groups, too. Receivers waiting for calls range from Golden Tate and Danny Amendola to Damiere Byrd and Dede Westbrook. They’re on the older side, but the Saints could use a defensive tackle with NFL experience like Geno Atkins, Kawann Short, Jurrell Casey, or Sheldon Richardson. Big-money deals have dried up across the board, so some veteran players are going to have to sign for beneath their market value just to continue playing in 2021.

The Saints still have some boxes to check off as their retool their roster ahead of training camp later this summer. They also have more hurdles to clear before they can do that. But it’s good to see they have options.

Early prospect rankings for the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2022 NFL draft

A look at prospect rankings for the 2022 NFL draft which lists three Oklahoma Sooners.

With the NFL draft firmly in the rearview mirror for the 2021 class, the focus now shifts forward to the 2021 college football season and possible prospect for 2022. One outlet has already pegged quarterback Spencer Rattler as the No. 1 overall pick in their “way too early” mock draft.

USA TODAY Sports writer Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz has released his top 15 players for the 2022 NFL draft. No surprise here as Rattle is once again listed among the top players in the country. He checks in at No. 3 overall and the No. 1 quarterback on the list.

Lincoln Riley has already produced two No. 1 picks at quarterback in Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, and a third might be on the way. Rattler has a way of making dazzling deep strikes look effortless with a flick of his wrist. Teams will want to see more consistency, however, after he capped an up-and-down redshirt freshman season by throwing 10 touchdowns and one interception in his final four games.

Rattler is just one spot ahead of the quarterback he will competing with for top quarterback honors in 2021, North Carolina’s Sam Howell. The only other quarterback on the list in the top 15 is Southern California‘s Kedon Slovis. Rattler is the only Sooner to make the list for USA TODAY Sports.

Next, another draft prospect list showcases three Sooners…

This Gator is among USA TODAY’s top 15 players in the 2022 NFL draft

Take a look at USA TODAY Sport’s top 15 players in a way-too-early prediction of the 2022 NFL draft, including defensive back Kaiir Elam.

The 2021 NFL draft is officially over and in the books, and what a draft it was for Florida football fans. The Gators had the most players selected in the seven-round event since 2016 and star tight end Kyle Pitts was the highest-selected at his position in the modern era of the draft.

Now that it over and done with, it is never too early to start looking ahead, right? While the ink is still drying on contracts of the drafted players and undrafted free agents, Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz at USA TODAY Sports went ahead and gave his way-too-early top 15 projection for next year’s selection extravaganza.

Among them is a talented defensive back whom the Gators will be relying on heavily to anchor their D-unit next season in Kaiir Elam. Expectations will be high for him in his junior year as he will be one of the most experienced players in the secondary, but he has done quite well thus far meeting and even exceeding many of his projections.

Take a look at Middlehurst-Schwartz’s top 15 players in his way-too-early predictions for the 2022 NFL draft below, including defensive back Kaiir Elam.

Where Spencer Rattler lands in the ‘way too early’ 2022 mock draft

The Draft Network put together their way too early mock draft for 2022, so where does Spencer Rattler go?

The dust hasn’t quite settled on the 2021 NFL draft and analysts have already started looking to the 2022 draft. One name to watch will be Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler. He will be eligible to make the jump to the NFL but the question is will he? The Heisman Trophy favorite will have a decision to make.

The Draft Network has already produced their first mock draft for 2022 and Spencer Rattler is right at the top of it. Quarterbacks are always at the top of the conversation, and three of the top five picks are the gunslingers. For Rattler, he lands in the mock as the No. 1 overall selection. If that were to be the case, Rattler would make the third quarterback to be drafted from that slot under Lincoln Riley.

What The Draft Network Says…

If the Houston Texans are picking this high, Deshaun Watson won’t be their quarterback anymore. If that’s the case, they’ll be picking at the top of the 2022 draft. Spencer Rattler brings the big arm that gives him first-overall potential.

With so many questions surrounding Deshaun Watson, this would make sense for the Houston Texans organization. However, with as dysfunctional as that team appears to be as of late it might not be the best situation for a young quarterback like Spencer Rattler.

No other Oklahoma Sooner appeared in the “way too early” mock draft but there is plenty of time for players to rise up draft boards. As it sits right now, Rattler will be the player to watch each Saturday.

The obscenely early 2022 NFL draft watch list: Defense

The 2021 NFL draft is in the books, but it is never to soon to think about the 2022 NFL draft. Here are some players to watch on defense.

Generally speaking football fans fall into one of two camps.

The first group gets done watching the NFL draft and moves on to other sports, such as basketball and baseball. They will start tuning back into their favorite football teams come training camp.

The second group gets done watching the NFL draft and immediately…thinks about the next one.

If you find yourself in that second camp, then this is your starting spot. The 2021 NFL draft just ended but here is a watch list for the next draft, just a year away. Here is the obscenely early 2022 NFL draft watch list on defense.

DeMarvion Overshown listed as Texas’ most intriguing 2022 NFL draft prospect

ESPN recently listed the most intriguing 2022 NFL draft prospects from each Top 25 college football team.

The 2021 NFL draft doesn’t officially begin until April 29 at 7 p.m. CDT, but draft analysts are already looking forward.

We will likely see a slew of 2022 NFL mock drafts in the coming days to begin preparing for next year’s event. ESPN was a step ahead of the crowd on Wednesday when they listed their most intriguing 2022 NFL draft prospects from each Top 25 college football team.

For the Longhorns, it happened to be linebacker DeMarvion Overshown. Here’s what they had to say about the rising star of Texas’ defensive unit:

In seven seasons at Washington, new Longhorns defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski had 17 players drafted. He’ll have a versatile new defender to utilize in DeMarvion Overshown this season in Austin. Overshown, a 6-4, 217-pound former safety, showed flashes of brilliance in his first season as a linebacker, culminating with MVP honors in the Alamo Bowl after he had six tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery and two quarterback hurries against Colorado. With one more year of experience, Overshown could start climbing up draft boards. — Wilson

Although Overshown is currently recovering from a minor shoulder surgery, he’s expected to be good to go for Texas’ season opener against Louisiana on Sept. 4.

The third-year player started all 10 games last season and totaled 60 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, four quarterback hurries, and a team-high two interceptions and seven pass breakups.

Overshown is primed to be an NFL-caliber linebacker and should continue to have his best performances in Texas’ biggest games.

Titans slated to get comp pick after DaQuan Jones signs with Panthers

The Titans are now in the green in the compensatory pick formula.

The Tennessee Titans are now slated to get a compensatory pick in 2022 after former defensive lineman DaQuan Jones signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers in free agency.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jones will make $4.05 million with the Panthers in 2021, all of which is guaranteed — and so ends Jones’ seven-year stint in Nashville where he was one of the longest-tenured Titans.

Prior to his signing with the Panthers, the Titans had broken even in the compensatory pick formula, but are now in the green and stand to get a fourth-round selection added to their list of picks next year.

Over the Cap’s Nick Korte explains (note: in the tweet below he means Corey Davis, not Hunter Henry):

In short, the Titans have lost more compensatory-pick-eligible free agents than they have gained this offseason, leading to their current situation.

Of course, this can change if the Titans go ahead and sign another free agent for a sizable amount of money before April 27. Right now, the contract Jonnu Smith signed with the New England Patriots puts them over the top.

If nothing changes, the Titans will be getting a compensatory pick for the second straight year after being awarded an extra third-round selection in 2021. In all, Tennessee has nine picks in the upcoming draft.

Pro Football Hall of Famer extremely high on Kyle Hamilton

Who is Notre Dame’s best defensive player over the last 30 years?

We’re not even through the 2021 NFL draft yet and we’re already getting some discussions about the 2022 edition.  One recent thought on the 2022 draft came from former Dallas Cowboys executive Gil Brandt who is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Like any great mind, Brandt is thinking well ahead as he’s closed the book on the 2021 draft and is already looking ahead to 2022 as he released his top-five players for the 2022 edition.

At number two is a current Notre Dame star who is only entering his junior season but clearly has the ability to make the jump to the NFL.

Trailing only defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux of Oregon, Brandt ranks Fighting Irish safety Kyle Hamilton as the 2022 draft’s second-best player.

Based on the replies I think most people are struggling to understand he’s ranking the players, not projecting what number pick they’ll be selected at.

Hamilton is as good of safety as there is in the nation and clearly has an NFL body.  Although I don’t think there is a chance he’ll go second overall, if Hamilton does go in the top-10 when he’s eventually drafted he’d be the first Notre Dame defender taken that high since Bryant Young went seventh overall to the San Francisco 49ers in 1994.
