Top 75 prospects at the end of the college regular season

Top 75 prospects for the 2024 NFL draft at the end of the college regular season from Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon

Thanksgiving weekend brought the 2023 college football regular season to a close. Rivalry weekend was a great end to an interesting season. It also marks a good time to update the 2024 NFL draft prospect rankings.

Some of the prospects here have played their final college football games. With so many underclassmen, it’s possible some will opt to stay in college for 2024, too.

There is still considerable film work and study to be done even before we get to the postseason all-star bowls, pro days and the scouting combine in Indianapolis. Right now, I’ve gone through about one-fifth of the college game film and All-22 that I’ve accumulated through the year. I’ve seen exactly one FCS game and one D-II game (in person).

In short, changes will happen. But right now, this is how I see the prospects overall. Remember, big board rankings are not predictions of when a player will be drafted. That’s what mock drafts are for…

Sooners WR Marvin Mims named one of Athlon Sports Top 50 prospects for the 2023 NFL Draft

Oklahoma Sooners WR Marvin Mims was named by Athlon as an early Top 50 prospect for the 2023 NFL Draft.

Marvin Mims is as dynamic as dynamic gets. The Oklahoma Sooners would’ve been better served to get him the ball more last year. However, that’s the past and all we can focus on now is the future.

Presently, Mims is the unquestioned number one wide receiver on this Oklahoma team as it heads into summer to recharge before fall camp. He’s got a new offensive coordinator that doesn’t shy away from feeding his best players. Coming off of back-to-back seasons leading the Sooners in receiving yards, it stands to reason that Mims could do it again in 2022. With really good production over the last couple of seasons, it’s likely [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag] is drafted in the first 100 picks of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Athlon Sports took the liberty of naming their early Top 50 draft prospects for the 2023 NFL Draft and Mims was ranked No. 42, which would be good for a second-round selection. Recently, Mims has gone in the first round in early mock drafts from CBS Sports and Fox Sports.

In two years in Norman, Mims has produced well despite fewer opportunities to make plays than he probably should’ve been awarded. Mims was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection after catching 32 passes for 705 yards (22.0 yards per catch) and five touchdowns in 2021.

Mims will be a coveted player in the 2023 NFL draft as the league moves to more vertical-based passing concepts. His height and weight won’t endear anyone but his ability to win deep and make contested catches will be his calling cards as he’s more thoroughly evaluated in the months to come.

Teamed up with new offensive coordinator [autotag]Jeff Lebby[/autotag] and QB [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag], there’s no reason to believe Mims can’t move up from No. 42 and even threaten to make it into the first round.

If selected in the first 100 picks, Mims would become the first Sooners skill position player taken in the first 100 picks since the Dallas Cowboys drafted [autotag]CeeDee Lamb[/autotag] at No. 17 overall in the 2020 NFL draft.

As the line goes, you’ll never know how good a draft class was until several years from now.

But that’s not quite fair, and it’s not quite right. We actually do know.

We know that almost all of the late picks won’t work – no matter how good they seemed to be – and we know most of the first round picks will be fine starters, especially in a year with just one quarterback selected early.

So how do you do this? How do you rank who had the best 2022 NFL Draft weekend before any of these guys step on the field?

1. Again, assume every pick after the fourth round was a waste of time, because historically and statistically, it almost certainly was. More credit is given to teams who had a ton of picks – more picks, more chances to get a starter. And, to be fair, kickers, punters, and occasionally running backs are the best late value gets.

2. Is the guy good, and does he have the tools? If that sounds totally obvious it’s because it is. Leave the hoo-ha analysis out of it – was he a good football player in college, and does he have NFL measurables?

3. Value. That’s all relative – your worth is what the NFL draft says it is – but in general, everyone is working from the same set of beliefs and rankings. There are fluctuations, but it’s rare when the collective scouting world isn’t close to agreement on most of the prospects.

Whether or not a pick works is usually up to random dumb luck, especially when it comes to the all-timers and All-Pros – otherwise, Aaron Donald, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers would’ve been drafted a whole lot earlier. The skill is getting a prospect at a relatively cheap draft slot.

And finally …

4. Were the needs filled? Did teams address their problems and get good parts to help the cause?

And with that, the 2022 NFL Draft Rankings from 1 to 32.

6 Oklahoma 2022 NFL draft prospects on Bleacher Reports Top 300

The day has finally arrived for the 12 Oklahoma Sooners who declared for the 2022 NFL draft. The Oklahoma Sooners will be well-represented through the seven-round and 262 picks over the three-day event in Las Vegas.

The guy most likely to be picked first is edge rusher Nik Bonitto. The Sooners star was Oklahoma’s best defender the last two seasons. Though he may not get his name called on night one of the draft, Bonitto will most assuredly get selected Friday night.

Perrion Winfrey and Brian Asamoah will likely join Bonitto in being a Friday night selection, though recent mock drafts have them going in the third round.

In the top 300 released by Bleacher Report’s draft analysts, a new Oklahoma player stands out among Sooners prospects.

Marquis Hayes was their highest-ranked Sooner coming in at No. 61. The project him to be a starter at the NFL level. His experience and physicality are traits that NFL teams love. And there’s plenty of tape of him moving in space as a part of Lincoln Riley’s rushing attack.

Could this ranking from Bleacher Report signify Hayes as a potential second round target for teams?

In all, six Oklahoma Sooners were ranked within their top 300. Missing were Kennedy Brooks, Michael Woods, Tyrese Robinson, Jeremiah Hall, and LaRon Stokes, and Gabe Brkic.

The only player that hasn’t shown up in mock drafts this spring is Stokes, whose limited playing time and production put a damper on an athletic player who could grow into a player in the USFL or XFL

As you get ready for the NFL draft, take a look at how Bleacher Report ranked the Oklahoma Sooners draft prospects.
