2022 NFL mock draft: Updated 1st-round projections with trades

See who moves up the board in the latest 2022 NFL mock draft from Draft Wire editor Luke Easterling

The 2022 NFL draft is just days away, and the rumor mill is starting to hit that next gear as this year’s event draws closer.

Every year, the draft conversation is driven by the top quarterbacks, even when the class doesn’t feature a clear-cut No. 1 overall pick, or even a consensus top prospect at the game’s most important position.

Those quarterbacks usually inspire a robust trade market, with teams jockeying for position to land their future franchise passer.

Could that happen again this year?

Here’s an updated look at how the first round of this year’s draft could shake out, complete with a handful of trades that could go down on draft night:

Cowboys address DL, OL in first 2 rounds of Kiper/McShay 3-round mock draft

The dynamic draft duo for The Worldwide Leader has tag-teamed on a three-round mock draft that harnesses both their big-board brains.

Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay agreed to take turns, alternating picks for each team through the first 105 selections. McShay has the odd-numbered selections; Kiper takes evens. No trading selections, and no colluding on picks. The gurus’ predictions are based on a combination of what they think each club will do and what they would do if it were up to them.

Kiper ends up making all three Dallas picks in these rounds, and he addresses what many see as the three biggest areas of need, though not necessarily in the same order as most fans.

Mock draft watch: ESPN’s alternating-pick projection loads Lions up on Georgia Bulldogs prospects

In the latest 3-round mock draft from ESPN, analysts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay mix things up by using a different format. Kiper and McShay take turns making the picks based on their own takes on the draft board.

It’s a fun exercise that produces some more unpredictable results. For the Detroit Lions, it wound up creating a de facto Georgia Bulldogs reunion. Three of the five picks in the first three rounds hail from the national champs, including the Lions’ top pick.

At No. 2 overall, Kiper selects DE Travon Walker. McShay tabbed Michigan EDGE Aidan Hutchinson at No. 1, and that left Kiper grasping a bit,

I don’t have Walker ranked this high — he’s No. 10 on my Big Board — but he’s going to go in the top five picks because of his ceiling. If the Lions can’t get Hutchinson, they could get instant edge-rush help with Walker.

With the next two Detroit picks, at 32 and 34 overall, Kiper rolls with Cincinnati QB Desmond Ridder and Georgia safety Lewis Cine. Ridder at 32 has popped up a few times in recent mock drafts, so it’s clearly an idea that is out there. Cine is a very nice fit and good value for the Lions at No. 34.

The two third-round picks lean on the SEC, with Georgia LB Channing Tindall at No. 66 and Texas A&M RB Isaiah Spiller at 97. Tindall is a superb athlete and makes sense where the Lions drafted him. The same cannot be said–in either regard–on Spiller. Running back might be the lowest position of need on the entire Lions roster.

2022 NFL mock draft: What if the Jaguars throw a curveball at No. 1?

What would the first round of the 2022 NFL draft look like if the Jacksonville Jaguars pulled a shocker with the No. 1 overall pick?

At this point, it looks like a consensus is building around a couple of prospects for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected by many to use this year’s top selection on Michigan’s Aidan Hutchinson, while a late push appears to be materializing from another talented edge defender in Georgia’s Travon Walker.

But what if the Jaguars throw a huge curveball at No. 1, taking the player many believe to be the best overall prospect in this year’s draft, regardless of position?

Here’s what the first round could look like if the Jags pull a shocker at No. 1:

2022 NFL Mock Draft: Second Round

Mock Draft Watch: Dane Brugler revamps Lions defense in 7 round mock

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler introduces his 7 round mock draft and provides the Detroit Lions with strong core players

The NFL draft is just a couple of weeks away, and everyone is trying to finalize what each team could do, which means mock drafts are plentiful. The latest mock draft comes from one of the most respected draft minds in the industry, The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, who recently released his annual draft guide “The Beast,” which is highly recommended.

He gives a crack at the possible draft haul for each team in his seven-round mock, and below are the players he decided to bestow to the Detroit Lions.

2: Travon Walker, Edge, Georgia
32: Jahan Dotson, WR, Penn State
34: Lewis Cine, S, Georgia
66: Leo Chenal, LB, Wisconsin
97: Akayleb Evans, CB, Missouri
177: Malcolm Rodriguez, LB, Oklahoma State
181: Haskell Garrett, DT, Ohio State
217: Chris Paul, OT/G, Tulsa
234: Trestan Ebner, RB, Baylor

Walker has seen his draft skyrocket after he showcased his superior athletic traits and his versatility skillset along the defensive line, making him a popular selection lately for the Lions. Many have doubts due to his limited production, but considering how stacked the Georgia defense was, that is something that shouldn’t be a knock against him. He can be the type of player that can be a cornerstone player for the Lions defense for years to come.

Even the Lions have brought back nearly their entire receiving corps from last year, along with the addition of D.J. Chark; it shouldn’t take them out of the running for a receiver, hence Dotson’s selection. We have seen Dotson mocked to the Lions numerous times for a very good reason. He is another versatile player maker that can line up anywhere at receiver and be equally productive. He will fit right in with the Lions offense with his strong route-running ability and ball skills.

If there is any position the Lions must address in the draft is safety, they cannot walk away from the draft without potentially upgrading the position. The Lions did resign Tracy Walker and just signed DeShon Elliot, but the addition of Lewis Cine gives the Lions a three-headed monster in the deep field that will give opposing offenses fits. He is one of those do-it-all players that cover and defend the run, making him an excellent chess piece.

Brugler decides to give the Lions two linebackers in Chenal and Rodriguez and continues the trend of revamping the defense. Chenal is not the most fine-tuned linebacker in the class, but he makes up for it with his downhill thumper mentality and diagnoses plays on the fly. Rodriguez led Oklahoma State in tackles for three straight years after moving from safety to linebacker. He doesn’t have the ideal length for some teams at linebacker, but his football instincts are very strong, and he has a toughness that fits in with the culture Detroit is trying to build.

Evans brings a unique blend of athleticism and versatility due to his blend of superior length and speed that can make him an asset in the secondary. He may not have plays that some teams like, but this combination makes him an enticing prospect. Garrett was highly regarded coming out of high school, but unfortunately, he couldn’t put everything as many wanted to at Ohio State. He needs to improve his pass rush arsenal but can be quick in and out of blocks, has some strong burst, and can be a rotational piece.

We flip the script with the last two picks and address the offense with the selections of Paul and Ebner. You can never have enough versatile linemen, and that is exactly what Paul brings to the table. He played mostly left tackle at Tulsa, but he projects better as a guard due to his lack of movement skills. Ebner is the type of player the Lions can develop into an offensive weapon with his pass-catching ability and special team’s prowess. He won’t make strictly off just running backs but provides a set of skills that make him a dangerous player.

The Detroit Lions Podcast went through the first 34 picks of the 2022 NFL draft with help from Woodward Sports

Looking for a different kind of mock draft? The Detroit Lions Podcast featuring Lions Wire’s Jeff Risdon performed a live walkthrough of the first 34 picks of the 2022 NFL draft with special guests Scott Bischoff and Russell Brown from Woodward Sports.

From the Jacksonville Jaguars pick at No. 1 to the Lions’ second-round pick at No. 34, the quartet goes through all the picks, including three for Detroit.

What makes this one different is the discussion around each pick. The guys talk about different options and debate why the team would make one decision over another. There is considerable disagreement on a few picks, including the Lions first selection at No. 2.

Spoiler alert!

The Lions haul:

  • Michigan EDGE Aidan Hutchinson
  • Georgia WR George Pickens
  • Penn State S Jaquan Brisker

Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft sends Lions fans over the edge

Lions fans did not like ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest mock draft projections for the team and weren’t shy about sharing their displeasure

Normally we like to break down some prominent mock drafts as they’re released and analyze the haul for the Detroit Lions. But with the latest offering from ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr., Lions fans didn’t need to wait to react.

It’s been about as well-received as a blizzard during Spring Break.

Kiper’s three selection for the Lions are definitely against the grain from most contemporary mock drafts:

  • No. 2 overall: Cincinnati CB Sauce Gardner
  • No. 32: Georgia S Lewis Cine
  • No. 34: Michigan EDGE David Ojabo

Most fans seem just fine with Cine. But the reaction to a cornerback at No. 2 overall and a player who will almost certainly miss the 2022 season with an Achilles injury at No. 34 is a tough sell for a lot of Detroit fans (and media).

Note: Many of these come in reaction to a tweet from Justin Rogers of the Detroit News. Not all are family-friendly.

Mock draft watch: A Wolverine double-dip for Detroit in Draft Wire’s latest

The Lions add two instant defensive starters from the Wolverines in this projection

The concept of drafting college teammates to the same NFL team is not always a popular one, but one current mock draft explores that idea for the Detroit Lions and bolsters the defense in the process.

The latest first-round projection from our friends at Draft Wire sees the Lions double up on Michigan Wolverine defensive prospects. It adds two instant starters at the two positions of highest need: EDGE and safety.

First up is Aidan Hutchinson at No. 2 overall. With the recent trend toward Georgia’s Travon Walker going in the top spot to Jacksonville, Hutchinson to his hometown Lions is also growing in popularity.

At No. 32, safety Dax Hill joins Hutchinson in staying close to Ann Arbor. Hill’s ability to play as a coverage safety or a slot corner makes him in high demand in the range at the end of the first round. Both players were at the Lions’ local day workout on Monday.

2022 NFL mock draft: Risers, fallers, and a new No. 1

Who takes over the top spot in this updated first-round projection for the 2022 NFL draft?

The 2022 NFL draft is just a couple of weeks away, and while there seems to be a consensus building for the No. 1 overall pick, there’s still plenty of time for things to change.

This year’s draft class has a handful of prospects who are all worthy of consideration for the top spot, and while Michigan’s Aidan Hutchinson appears to be the current favorite, another talented edge defender might be making a late push to oust him.

Here’s an updated look at how the first round of the 2022 NFL draft could shake out, starting with a new name at No. 1:
