Tale of the Tape: Individual Leaders – Notre Dame vs. Oklahoma

Do you take the Irish’s leaders or the Sooners’?

Notre Dame gets to play Oklahoma in its next College World Series game, and it might have an advantage as far as balance. Sure, you have [autotag]Carter Putz [/autotag]pacing the Irish in both runs scored and RBIs, and [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag] is terrific at keeping runs off the board and closing games. However, you have a variety of names after that. [autotag]David LaManna[/autotag] hits well for average, [autotag]Jack Zyska[/autotag] provides the power, and [autotag]Ryan Cole[/autotag] is a menace on the basepaths.

For the Sooners, it’s mainly one guy apiece on the hitting and pitching sides. One of them is shortstop Peyton Graham, who is projected to be taken early in the upcoming MLB draft. Also getting ready for the draft is left-handed pitcher Jake Bennett, who won’t be available after starting and winning the Sooners’ last game against Texas A&M. Although not listed in the above chart, make sure you’re on the lookout for catcher Jimmy Crooks, too.

Tale of the Tape: Team Stats – Notre Dame vs. Oklahoma

Do the Irish have the advantage here?

After a solid win over Texas in its College World Series opener, Notre Dame takes on Oklahoma next. There’s one area in which the Irish have a clear advantage, and that’s pitching. With how many runs the Sooners have given up, it’s a wonder they’ve gotten this far. Since the stakes are higher with each passing day now, teams are shortening up their rotations, and that only can mean good news for the Irish.

What the Sooners lack in pitching, they make up for it with hitting, and there’s plenty of that. Even more so, this is a team you don’t want to put on base because it’s one of the best in the country at stealing them. It goes without saying that the Irish’s pitchers will have to keep a close eye on the baserunners whenever they have to pitch out of the stretch. Hopefully, [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag] is making that clear.

Arkansas fans are absolutely dominating the College World Series Jell-O shot challenge

That’s just so much Jell-O.

It’s always a party when the college baseball world takes over Omaha, Nebraska, every June for the Men’s College World Series, but one local joint kicks things up a notch.

At Rocco’s Pizza and Cantina, you can see three of America’s primary cultural pillars collide: baseball, a competitive spirit and booze. The restaurant hosts a Jell-O shot competition where all eight fanbases in the CWS compete to down more servings of the liquor-filled gelatin than any other.

A bunch of rowdy college baseball fans competitively downing hundreds of Jell-O shots is right in our wheelhouse here at For The Win, and we’ve been watching the competition with bated breath throughout the week.

The competition was neck-and-neck through the first few days, and while Arkansas fans eventually began to pull away, Ole Miss and Texas A&M still sat very much in range entering the second day of Round 1 action in the CWS.

But it seems there are, in fact, two things Arkansas fans do better than any other team: Get amped as hell over a hog call and down Jell-O shots like there’s no tomorrow.

When Razorback fans began pouring into Rocco’s ahead of Arkansas’ CWS opener on Saturday against Stanford, they tossed back nearly 1,000 Jell-O shots in just three hours, breaking their lead wide open.

Let’s take a look at the updated scoreboard, shall we?

Yeah, that might be curtains, folks.

Arkansas undoubtedly has one of the most rabid fanbases in all of college baseball. The team has made it to three of the last four CWS, but it is still searching for its first national title after it finished as the national runner-up in 2018.

Regardless of what happens for the team in Omaha this year, Arkansas fans should still take pride in drinking, or uh, slurping, all other fans under the table.

Texas vs. Texas A&M: Preview and pitching matchups

Texas and Texas A&M will square off in Omaha for the first time ever.

For the first time in over 380 total meetings, Texas and Texas A&M will square off in the College World Series.

Both teams were sent to the losers bracket after a disappointing opening day in Omaha.

Notre Dame outclassed Texas in every aspect of the game. The Irish jumped out on Texas early and cruised to a 7-3 victory.

Oklahoma sent Texas A&M to the losers bracket by taking advantage of free passes and defensive mistakes by the Aggies. The Sooners held off a late A&M charge to win 13-8.

The Longhorns and Aggies met back on March 29 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Texas A&M won that affair 12-9 in what proved to be the jumpstart to their season.

Texas was in a similar position just a year ago before rattling off three straight wins to nearly make the championship series.

Here is a look at the pitching matchups and a few players to watch on both sides.

Oklahoma Sooners vs. Notre Dame: How to watch, stream, listen and key players of College World Series

The Oklahoma Sooners face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in their second game of the men’s College World Series and here’s how you can tune in.

Oklahoma received contributions from just about everyone in its 13-8 win over the Texas A&M Aggies. In the opener, the Sooners had six players with an RBI and nearly every batter reached base.

Jake Bennett was solid on the mound, even if he allowed four earned runs. The runs came on two home runs, which were two of his four hits allowed. Bennett didn’t walk a batter and had three strikeouts.

With David Sandlin’s appearance in the seventh inning, presumably, Cade Horton will get the ball for Oklahoma on Sunday night against the Fighting Irish. In his last three starts, he has allowed five earned runs in 17.2 innings pitched. In those three games against Texas, Florida and Virginia Tech, Horton struck out 25 and walked five.

He’ll need to be good again on Sunday because Notre Dame comes in with some strong pitching of its own.

As we get set for the teams’ second game at the men’s College World Series, here’s where you can catch the action.

  • Date: Sunday, June 19, 2022
  • Time: 6 p.m. CDT
  • TV Channel: ESPN2

It was a thrilling start for Oklahoma Baseball as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead over the Texas A&M Aggies through their first two turns at the plate. They used timely two-out hitting, great patience at the plate, and took the Aggies’ pitching staff deep to start their time in Omaha off with a bang.

Oklahoma got a three-run home run from Jimmy Crooks and a grand slam from Jackson Nicklaus, but a lot of the damage they did was by getting the ball in play and running the bases.

Trevin Michael came in during the seventh inning in which Texas A&M was mounting a comeback and slowed the bleeding. He pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to preserve the win.

Now the Sooners get set to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the winner’s bracket of the Men’s College World Series as they look to capture their third baseball national championship. Meanwhile, the Aggies and the Texas Longhorns will face off in an elimination game setting up what could be an explosive Saturday at the College World Series.

Before we start getting ready for Sunday, here’s a look at the best social media reactions to Saturday’s win.

Aggies drop College World Series opener to Oklahoma

Aggies drop College World Series opener to Oklahoma

The Aggies dropped their first game in the 2022 College World Series – a 13-8 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners. After sweeping their way through the College Station Regional and College Station Super Regional, being on the losing end of results has foreign since May 28th.

Aggies starter Nathan Dettmer got off to a rocky start and it seemed to be 5-0 before viewers settled into their seats. Joseph Menefee was looked at for relief much earlier than anticipated and the score became 8-0 before the Aggies could get their second at-bat.

This group will never be one to give up, rattling off three of their own in the bottom of the second, but the top of the 4th-inning seemed to make a potential comeback nearly impossible when four more runs were given up and Oklahoma found themselves leading 12-3. That 4th-inning proved to be the difference as a four-run 7th-inning cut the deficit to four, only for the Aggies to give up one final run in the ninth.

A reason for optimism, you ask? The Aggies have only conceded two consecutive losses ONE time this season – back-to-back losses at Alabama in early April. While it was a tough outing today, the fight to remain in this game – and prevent a complete and ugly rout – is something to hang our hats on.

Playing out of the Elimination Bracket is no easy feat, but I’ll take this group to keep their season alive on June 19th when they take on the University of Texas at 2:00 PM ET/1:00 PM CT on ESPN. The fight to continue their journey in Omaha will be on the line!

Notre Dame tops sluggish Texas 7-3 in the CWS opener

Texas will take on Texas A&M in an elimination game on Sunday afternoon.

Texas’ College World Series opening woes continue as Notre Dame took game one over the Longhorns 7-3.

The Fighting Irish outplayed Texas in every aspect of the game from the jump. A solo home run in the first inning set the tone for the rest of the ballgame.

The Irish scratched a couple of runs followed by a three-run fifth inning which broke the game open for Notre Dame. They took a commanding 6-1 lead and never looked back.

Pete Hansen was not sharp, allowing six runs on nine hits in just 4.1 innings of work. Tristan Stevens did a good job in relief to keep Texas in the game, but the offense could not muster another comeback victory.

Texas never seemed to threaten the Notre Dame bullpen late. Lefty Jack Finley shut the door retiring the last four Longhorn hitters in order.

The loss sends Texas to the losers bracket for an elimination game against Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon. Lucas Gordon will take the mound as the Horns hope to get back on track in Omaha.

Notre Dame takes College World Series opener vs. Texas

It was a fun Friday for the Irish.

Notre Dame’s first game in the 2022 College World Series couldn’t have gone better. They took the lead on Texas in the first inning and never gave it up in a 7-3 win. With the victory, they earned the right to play Sunday against Oklahoma, which earned a 13-8 win over Texas A&M on Friday. They also will have at least one more game regardless of the result.

Just as fun as the victory was the atmosphere in the stands. Even if you disregard all the Irish fans who showed up, the neutral fans who were there still have be to happy about this program that didn’t even let an unlikable Tennessee team reach Omaha. The Irish fans might even have been outnumbered by Longhorns fans, but it didn’t matter because the folks wearing green had a lot more to cheer about during the evening.

In case you missed the game, here are a few images:

Relive Oklahoma’s 13-8 win over Texas A&M in the Men’s College World Series

Take a look back at the Oklahoma Sooners’ 13-8 win over Texas A&M through some of the best photos from game one of the Men’s College World Series.

The Oklahoma Sooners got off to a great start in their 13-8 win over Texas A&M in the Men’s College World Series.

They struck first with a run in the top of the first inning and then exploded for seven runs in the second. Oklahoma manufactured runs with great baserunning, patience at the plate, and using the long ball to put away their former Big 12 and future SEC foe.

In order to win the College World Series, you almost have to win the first game in the series. It isn’t often that a team comes out of the loser’s bracket to win the whole thing.

Oklahoma will now face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish after they defeated the Texas Longhorns 7-3 in the second game on Friday. But before we begin looking at the Irish, let’s take a look at some of the best photos from Oklahoma’s 13-8 win over the Texas A&M Aggies.
