Big 12 standings: TCU remains on top, Kansas State looks destined for Arlington

Kansas State is firmly in the driver’s seat for the second spot in the Big 12 championship after week nine. From @BenDackiw

Another week has passed, and the Big 12 is still incredibly crowded behind the first-place TCU Horned Frogs. With four games remaining, the Frogs do not have a ranked opponent on their schedule. An undefeated regular season is very much in play in Fort Worth.

TCU has already beaten both Kansas State and Oklahoma State this season, so they will have a tiebreaker over both of them. With Kansas State beating the Cowboys last week, Oklahoma State is essentially playing for second place.

Kansas State is firmly in the driver’s seat for the second spot in the Big 12 Championship. These Wildcats just will not go away. With backup quarterback Will Howard getting the start in place of Adrian Martinez, K-State handed the Pokes their worst loss of the Mike Gundy era, 48-0.

K-State doesn’t have an easy schedule in front of it. It has dates with the Texas Longhorns and Baylor Bears. Both of those teams are one game behind the Wildcats, and that Baylor-Kansas State game is in Waco.

While getting to Arlington will be difficult, the Wildcats are in control of their own path. If they keep winning, they’ll make it.

Beyond that, the scenarios get messy. More than half of the conference is either 3-2 or 2-3 in Big 12 play. If the Wildcats lose a few games down the stretch, it opens up a realm of possibilities for the teams behind them.

While it would be great to say the Sooners are one of those teams, it’s very unlikely they can jump Kansas State in the standings. The Wildcats would need to lose three of their last four games and the Sooners would need to win out.

The Texas Longhorns are still very much alive. They’ll need a little help to get there, but they could still make it to Arlington. They play Kansas State this week. Beating the Wildcats in Manhattan would be a good start. Their problem is the loss they suffered to Oklahoma State two weeks ago.

While the race in the Big 12 are looking messy and complicated at the moment, the final stretch of the season has a way of cleaning things up. Championship November is nearly upon us.

College Football Power Rankings: Tennessee and TCU move up, Syracuse and Wake Forest slide

Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, and Syracuse fall after disappointing losses in Week 9. But who’s on the rise? Here are this week’s College Football Power rankings. From @john9williams

Week 9 of the college football season provided some fantastic action and stunning blowouts in top 25 action.

The Ohio State Buckeyes and Penn State Nittany Lions played a fantastic game. The two teams scored 41 points in a frenetic fourth quarter and the Buckeyes stayed undefeated. Rival Michigan held on against Michigan State.

Elsewhere in the top four, the Tennessee Volunteers dismantled the Kentucky Wildcats, 44-6, and Georgia continued its dominance with a 42-20 win over Florida.

In the only other game featuring two top 25 teams, the Kansas State Wildcats blanked Oklahoma State, 48-0. Several upsets occurred: Wake Forest fell to Louisville, and Syracuse was blown out by Notre Dame.

With another fantastic week of college football action, how did this week’s power rankings shake out?

Oklahoma Sooners at Iowa State Cyclones: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for week 9

Trying to figure out where to find the Sooners game on Saturday? Here’s how to watch, stream or listen to Oklahoma vs. Iowa State.

Oklahoma (4-3, 1-3 Big 12) will face Iowa State (3-4, 0-4) on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Sooners look to pick up their second Big 12 win of the season when they travel to Ames, Iowa, to face the Cyclones. Ames can be a tough place to play for Oklahoma, but an 11 a.m. kickoff on a Saturday is better than the Thursday night date originally scheduled.

Coming out of the bye week, both teams should be fresh and ready to go for this week’s matchup.

Historically, Oklahoma has dominated the matchup, but during the Lincoln Riley era, Iowa State picked up two wins, including one in Norman in 2017, the first season of Riley’s tenure.

Brent Venables is hoping to avoid the same fate as his predecessor by beating an Iowa State team that has been pretty good on defense. If the Sooners can get an improved effort from their win over Kansas two weeks ago, then Oklahoma should come away with the win.

By the Numbers: Oklahoma Sooners at Iowa State Cyclones

Take a look at how the Oklahoma Sooners and the Iowa State Cyclones stack up statistically heading into their week 9 showdown in Ames.

This Saturday’s matchup between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Iowa State Cyclones is a tale of two teams.

Oklahoma boasts one of the best offenses in the country while the Cyclones’ strength is their stingy defense. The Sooners have struggled on defense in 2022, while it’s Iowa State’s offense that has had the harder time up in Ames.

The Sooners come into the game as slight favorites on the road after erupting for 52 points against Kansas. Before the bye, Iowa State suffered their fourth-straight loss and their fourth loss in a one-score game.

When Dillon Gabriel has played a full game for the Sooners they’ve scored more than 30 points each time.

The Baylor Bears are the only team to score more than 30 in a game this season against Iowa State. Texas scored 24 in the Cyclones’ week seven loss. No other teams have scored more than 20 against Iowa State this season.

Here’s a look at how the two sides stack up in this week’s By the Numbers.

Clemson survives, Oregon knocks off UCLA: College Football Power Rankings after Week 8

Clemson held off Syracuse, TCU stormed back against Kansas State to remain undefeated, and former Sooners land in the top 25 after a win. This week’s College Football Power Rankings after week 8.

Six teams remain unbeaten through week eight of the college football season across four conferences. Clemson and TCU were the two teams in the most danger. They rallied in the second half of their games to keep their undefeated season alive.

Ohio State and Tennessee had no trouble dispatching Iowa and Tennessee-Martin, while Georgia and Michigan enjoyed a week off to preserve their undefeated seasons.

Gone from the ranks of the unbeaten are UCLA and Ole Miss. Ole Miss was blown out by a surging LSU squad. UCLA lost their top 10 matchup with Oregon, who has bounced back nicely after their week one blowout loss to Georgia.

Making their debut in this week’s power rankings are the South Carolina Gamecocks and former Sooners [autotag]Shane Beamer[/autotag], [autotag]Spencer Rattler[/autotag], and [autotag]Austin Stogner[/autotag]. They improved to 5-2 and 2-2 in the SEC with a win over Texas A&M.

Elsewhere in the Big 12, Oklahoma State rebounded from their loss to TCU with a gritty win over Texas to keep their Big 12 title game and (slim) College Football Playoff hopes alive.

Let’s take a look at this week’s power rankings after some fantastic week eight action.

Top 5 Big Ten Week 8 games and predictions

Week 8 of the Big Ten slate is upon us. What are the top matchups this week and what can fans expect from this week’s games?

Entering the back half of the season, it appears that both divisions of the Big Ten are entirely open for the taking and is a matter of who wants to go get it. Well, that is for the Big Ten West, at least.

On the West, it is a mess of teams near the top with none undefeated in conference play. The No. 18 Fighting Illini, who are on a bye, are becoming the favorite but Purdue, Minnesota, and somehow Nebraska are all right behind them chasing the trip to Indianapolis.

On the East, it is a two team race. Michigan and Ohio State are on a collision course to meet each other undefeated for a spot in the Big Ten championship game. The rest of the conference is playing for their bowl berth.

We do have Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska, and Michigan State all on a bye this week giving us five conference matchups to dive into.

Jack Campbell, Tory Taylor represent Iowa Hawkeyes as CBS midseason All-Americans

The Iowa Hawkeyes are one of just four teams in the country with multiple players on the CBS midseason All-American team.

The Iowa Hawkeyes find themselves with two players on CBS Sports’ midseason All-American team, one of just four programs in the country that can boast that distinction. The other three teams with multiple players named are the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Georgia Bulldogs, and the USC Trojans.

Unsurprisingly, the two Hawkeyes named come from the defensive and special teams unit. On defense, CBS Sports named Jack Campbell to the midseason All-American team at linebacker along with Alabama’s Will Anderson and Arkansas‘ Drew Sanders.

Campbell leads the entire Hawkeyes defense with 62 total tackles through just six games. He also has three tackles for loss to go with it. Campbell is doing everything right to perform at a high level and lead this defense in his final year at Iowa before the inevitable move to the NFL.

The second Hawkeye finding their name on this list is punter Tory Taylor. The Aussie native has punted 41 times and is averaging 46.1 yards per punt with 15 of them traveling 50-plus yards and nearly half pinning opponents inside their own 20-yard line. Taylor also found himself on College Football Network’s midseason All-American team.

One bit of note is that the upcoming opponent for the Hawkeyes, the Ohio State Buckeyes, have locked down the wide receiver position in this bit of recognition. Emeka Egbuka and Marvin Harrison Jr. were the two receivers selected. The Buckeyes didn’t stop there as their quarterback C.J. Stroud was also selected.

5 Group of 5 coaches who can infuse success into the Iowa Hawkeyes’ offense

The Iowa Hawkeyes need an infusion of life into their offense. Here’s five Group of 5 coaches with the track records to do so.

The story of the Iowa Hawkeyes offense, and at times, lack thereof, has been more well chronicled this season than any other story surrounding the program. I am sure you have seen every metric, all the statistics, the data, you name it.

Rehashing that is not the point of this right now. The point of this is to look at a few “under-the-radar” names of non-Power 5 coaches that have proven track records of success and could provide a much needed infusion of change into the Hawkeyes offense. These coaches encompass all levels from head coach, to offensive coordinator, to positional coaches and could each bring something to the table.

This isn’t proclaiming any replacements, any changes, or any of that. This is simply outlining a few names that make sense. These names make sense mainly because it is the opportunity for these younger coaches to make the jump to a Power 5 program like Iowa with a rich tradition and incredible foundation.

College Football Network recognizes two Hawkeyes as midseason All-Americans

College Football Network released their midseason All-American teams and the Iowa Hawkeyes find themselves with two players among the group.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have done two things extremely well this season. Their defense and their special teams unit have been two bright spots amidst somewhat of a rollercoaster season up to this point.

While there is room to improve and room to grow, there are a couple of Hawkeyes performing at very high levels that have earned them some national recognition.

In College Football Network’s midseason All-American report, two Hawkeyes’ names made the cut. The Iowa Hawkeyes special teams unit is led by punter Tory Taylor. He was named to the midseason first team All-Americans team.

Joining Taylor on the list is defensive back, Cooper DeJean. Playing defensive back, there is much stiffer competition, yet DeJean still finds himself on the midseason All-Americans honorable mentions list.

Tory Taylor has single-handedly won games for the Iowa Hawkeyes this season, pinning opponents back inside the 20-yard line on 21 of his 52 kicks. Taylor averages nearly 46 yards per punt and hasn’t allowed more than 40 return yards on his kicks.  – Mellor, CFN

DeJean 37 tackles (third on the team), five pass breakups, and three interceptions (both tops on the Hawkeyes) through their first six games of the season. In just his second season with Iowa, DeJean has plenty of room to grow but has already shown the fanbase that he has all the potential to blossom into the next great defensive back in black and gold.

Any Given Saturday: Big 12 conference offers quality teams from top to bottom

The deepest league from top to bottom, the Big 12 has provided some fantastic matchups this season, and the stretch run will be entertaining.

Week by week, it appears we get some clarity at the top of the Big 12 conference.TCU, Kansas, State, Oklahoma State, and Texas have emerged as the contenders for the Big 12 title game. And yet, with how these games have been played, it could all change in a week.

Week seven offered another example of just how close these teams are. The Sooners’ 10-point win was the largest margin of victory from Saturday. Every other game was decided by three points.

In his week seven overreactions, Eddie Timanus of USA TODAY Sports explains that there’s no sure thing in the conference in 2022.

There’s simply no such thing as a sure win in the conference. The Horned Frogs are 3-0 in the conference, but their average victory margin in those three games is 13.7 points, which includes a 31-point defeat of Oklahoma. K-State’s margin in its three league wins? 5.7. If you remove the extreme outlier of the 49-0 result in the Red River showdown, the point differential for most teams in conference play is less than a touchdown a game. Iowa State is 0-4 alone in last place, but the Cyclones’ four losses have been by a total of 14 points. There’s a long way to go and this league is incredibly balanced, creating the opportunity for upsets on any weekend. – Timanus, USA TODAY Sports

TCU and Kansas State will square off this week for first place in the Big 12, but that doesn’t mean that will hold. From top to bottom, this league is the deepest in the country, providing entertaining contests and tight battles. At least when Dillon Gabriel is in the lineup for Oklahoma.

The Sooners have a bye this week, but the schedule looks like a lot of fun again in week eight. Top 20 matchups between Oklahoma State and Texas and TCU and Kansas State headline a slate that also has Kansas going on the road to face Baylor and West Virginia going to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech.

This week should provide another Saturday of entertaining matchups in a deep Big 12 conference.
