Top 15 recruiting classes as early signing day approaches

Where LSU ranks in recruiting just two weeks from the early signing period.

The clock is ticking on the 2022 recruiting class for the LSU Tigers. Now that a head coach is in place, he must re-recruit the guys already committed to the class. Brian Kelly will also be tasked with filling out his staff on top of closing out a few recruiting deals.

The two biggest names of the class are Will Campbell and Walker Howard, following the announcement of Kelly being hired, they seemed locked in. Howard was more vocal about it than their five-star offensive tackle pledge.

Class Breakdown

  • Quarterbacks: 1
  • Wide Receivers: 1
  • Tight Ends: 2
  • Offensive Line: 3
  • Defensive Line: 2
  • Linebacker: 1
  • Defensive Backs: 2
  • Special Teams: 1

The team has no running back commit at this moment but they were among the top three listed for Trevor Etienne recently. It remains to be seen if the hiring of Kelly would impact Etienne’s decision. He is also looking at Clemson, where his brother became a household name and Florida.

The commitments of both tight ends in Jake Johnson and Mason Taylor could be greatly impacted by who the offensive coordinator will be. With just two weeks until the early signing period, we look at the top 15 classes according to 247Sports team composite rankings.

Where Texas commits rank in the new On3 consensus rankings

Two players rank inside the top 100!

Steve Sarkisian and his staff are about to be in the thick of recruiting within the 2022 class. There are still plenty of prospects left on the board Texas will be going after, plus a couple who are committed elsewhere.

Everybody is always concerned as to where the Longhorns and their commits are ranked compared to other programs. Three websites have traditionally done that for us, but now, there is a new database rolling out.

On3 has built a new player database with recruits being involved. Alongside their own rankings, they have introduced the On3 consensus — similar to the 247Sports composite. It takes the rankings from 247Sports, ESPN, Rivals, and On3 and combines them into one rating.

For Texas, they have two players inside the top 100. Wide receiver Brenen Thompson (No. 48)  and running back Jamarion Miller (No. 98) are the highest on the offensive side of the ball, while Jaray Bledsoe (No. 196) is top of the defense.

Here is where all Texas’ prospects rank in the new On3 consensus.

Where Texas commit Maalik Murphy ranks among 2022 quarterbacks

The future Longhorn may have dropped in the overall rankings, but he still considered one of the best quarterback prospects in the nation.

Texas has a highly touted quarterback commit in Maalik Murphy for the 2022 recruiting class, although he’s expected to be a work in progress when he gets to the Forty Acres.

247Sports adjusted their rankings on Wednesday, as the high school and college football seasons are at the halfway point now. The future Texas signal-caller dropped a few spots in the rankings from the No. 171 overall prospect, to the No. 176 prospect in the nation.

Here are what the evaluators of Murphy said about his move down:

Four-star quarterback Maalik Murphy saw a small slide of five spots in the rankings update, but he still remains one of the top quarterbacks in the country. Murphy continues to develop with the more varsity experience he gets, and his tools and upside give him a lot of potential at the next level.

Murphy has seen a steady decline in his rating in comparison to the beginning of the season, where he was once rated as a five-star. It has mostly been due to his limited experience as a varsity quarterback, as this is his first full season.

Nonetheless, Murphy has still earned a spot as one of the nation’s top signal callers, especially thanks to his performance at the Elite 11.

Here is where he ranks amongst the 2022 quarterbacks:

It’s worth noting that recent offer recipient and current USC commit Devin Brown is four spots higher than Murphy at No. 5. The Longhorns have been trying to add another quarterback to the class, which could mean they are expecting to lose someone to the transfer portal.
