Updated 2021 NFL draft order: Jets clinch top 3 pick

The Jets are guaranteed to pick inside the top three of the 2021 NFL draft.

The Jets are guaranteed to pick inside the top three in the 2021 NFL draft.

With New York falling to 0-13 after its 40-3 loss to Seattle, and Dallas picking up its fourth win over Cincinnati, the Jets can not pick any lower than third overall. The Jets still control the No. 1 overall pick with their 13th loss as well.

Jacksonville didn’t do New York any favors though. The Jaguars were smoked by the Titans, 31-10 at home, dropping their record to 1-12. Cincinnati is also still mathematically alive for the No. 1 overall pick with a 2-10-1 record.

The Jets have a one-game lead over the Jaguars and a 2.5-game lead over the Bengals for the top pick in next year’s draft. Both the Jets and Jaguars have tough remaining schedules. The Jets play the Rams, Browns and Patriots, while the Jaguars play the Ravens, Bears and Colts. One win for either team could be detrimental in terms of landing the No. 1 overall pick.

Let’s take a look at where the first-round draft order stands after Week 14.

1.  New York Jets (0-13)

2. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-12)

3. Cincinnati Bengals (2-10-1)

4. Dallas Cowboys (4-9)

5. Los Angeles Chargers (4-9)

6. Carolina Panthers (4-9)

7. Atlanta Falcons (4-9)

8. Miami Dolphins (from Houston, 4-9)

9. Philadelphia Eagles (4-8-1)

10. New York Giants (5-8)

11. Detroit Lions (5-8)

12. San Francisco 49ers (5-8)

13. Denver Broncos (5-8)

14. Minnesota Vikings (6-7)

15. Chicago Bears (6-7)

16. New England Patriots (6-7)

17. Las Vegas Raiders (7-6)

18. Baltimore Ravens (8-5)

19. Washington Football Team (6-7)

20. Arizona Cardinals (7-6)

21. Miami Dolphins (8-5)

22. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-5)

23. Indianapolis Colts (9-4)

24. Cleveland Browns (9-4)

25. New York Jets (from Seattle Seahawks, 9-4)

26. Jacksonville Jaguars (from Los Angeles Rams, 9-4)

27. Tennessee Titans (9-4)

28. Buffalo Bills (10-3)

29. Green Bay Packers (10-3)

30. Pittsburgh Steelers (11-2)

2021 NFL draft order: 49ers closer to top 10 after Week 14 loss

The San Francisco 49ers could wind up with a top-five pick again if they lose to the Dallas Cowboys.

[jwplayer qLoEf0nU-ThvAeFxT]

The San Francisco 49ers aren’t officially eliminated from the playoff race, but they’re far enough away that the postseason picture is nigh impossible to see among the bright light of the 2021 NFL draft.

San Francisco is in an unenviable spot going into their final three games. They players aren’t going to quit, but a win in any of the three contests would be disastrous for their place in the NFL draft order.

Exiting Sunday’s loss to Washington, the 49ers are just one game back of the Dallas Cowboys for a top-5 pick, making Week 15 a gargantuan game from an NFL draft order standpoint.

Here’s what the top 15 looks like after Week 14 concluded:

1. Jets (0-13)
2. Jaguars (1-12)
3. Bengals (2-10-1)
4. Cowboys (4-9)
5. Chargers (4-9)
6. Panthers (4-9)
7. Falcons (4-9)
8. Dolphins via Texans (4-9)
9. Eagles (4-8-1)
10. Giants (5-8)
11. Lions (5-8)
12. 49ers (5-8)
13. Broncos (5-8)
14. Minnesota (6-7)
15. Bears (6-7)
16. Patriots (6-7)
17. Raiders (7-6)
18. Ravens (8-5)

It’s hard to project exactly where the 49ers will finish in the draft order since there’s such a logjam of 4-9, 5-8 and 6-7 teams. San Francisco’s been scoreboard watching for their playoff hopes, but now the draft begins making its way to the fore, and the 49ers have an outside shot at a top-five pick.

Updated 2021 NFL draft order: Jets, Jags stay still after close games

The Jets and Jaguars almost won both their games this past week, but both found ways to lose.

The Jets and Jaguars were close to getting wins this week, but in the end both teams found ways to lose.

New York was up 28-24 on Las Vegas with 13 seconds left in the game when former Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams sent an all-out blitz, leaving undrafted rookie cornerback Lamar Jackson on Henry Ruggs III. Ruggs III hit him with a double move and Jackson bit, leading to a 46-yard touchdown to give the Raiders the win.

Jacksonville, meanwhile, had a chance to get a win in overtime against the Vikings. However, Mike Glennon threw an interception and the Vikings capitalized with a game-winning field goal.

With both teams losing, they remain in the same spots as they were entering Week 13. The Jets control the No. 1 pick, while the Jaguars own the No. 2 pick.

Cincinnati has the No. 3 pick at 2-9-1, while the Los Angeles Chargers have the No. 4 pick with a 3-9 record. Dallas currently holds the No. 5 pick at 3-8.

Let’s take a look at the rest of the first-round draft order for the 2021 NFL draft.

1.  New York Jets (0-12)

2. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-11)

3. Cincinnati Bengals (2-9-1)

4. Los Angeles Chargers (3-9)

5. Dallas Cowboys (3-8)

6. Philadelphia Eagles (3-8-1)

7. Carolina Panthers (4-8)

10. Denver Broncos (4-8)

11. Washington Football Team (5-7)

2021 NFL Draft order: Ravens sitting in the middle after Week 12

The Baltimore Ravens are in limbo in the 2021 NFL Draft order after Week 12 thanks to not being in the playoffs yet and teams creeping up.

The Baltimore Ravens dropped to 6-5 on the season after losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers. While it was encouraging to see Baltimore fight so hard against Pittsburgh despite how thin they were due to a COVID-19 outbreak, a loss is still a loss.

With the Ravens just outside of a wild-card berth currently, the draft order reflects their being in limbo. Despite having a better record than the Giants (No. 19) and tied with the Cardinals (No. 20), Baltimore sits at No. 18 for the time being. However, with several 5-6 teams right behind them and the Raiders at 6-5, there’s a chance the Ravens could drop back quite a few spots if they don’t beat the Dallas Cowboys this week.

Below is the full 2021 NFL Draft order after Week 13 and where the Ravens sit, courtesy of Tankathon.

Updated 2021 NFL draft order: Jaguars nearly give Jets breathing room

The race for the top pick in the 2021 NFL draft has come down to the Jets and Jaguars.

The Jets were nearly handed a gift from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

While the Jets were crushed 20-3 by the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, the Jaguars almost pulled out a victory over the Cleveland Browns. Jacksonville lost 27-25 to Cleveland and were a two-point conversion away from possibly forcing overtime.

So with the Jets and Jaguars both losing, there’s still a one-game separation between the two teams in the race for the No. 1 pick in the draft. New York sits at 0-11, while Jacksonville is at 1-10. The only other team with a chance at catching the Jets and Jaguars is the Cincinnati Bengals.

They are 2-8-1 on the year and are 2.5 games back of the Jets for the top pick with five games left to play. The Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers are three games back with a 3-8 record, while the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers are 3.5 games back with records of 3-7-1 and 4-8, respectively.

Here’s a look at where the first round of the 2021 NFL draft stands after Week 12.

1.  New York Jets (0-11)

2. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-10)

3. Cincinnati Bengals (2-8-1)

4. Dallas Cowboys (3-8)

5. Los Angeles Chargers (3-8)

6. Philadelphia Eagles (3-7-1)

7. Carolina Panthers (4-8)

8. Washington Football Team (4-7)

9. Detroit Lions (4-7)

10. Atlanta Falcons (4-7)

11. Miami Dolphins (from Houston, 4-7)

12. Denver Broncos (4-7)

13. Chicago Bears (5-6)

14. Minnesota Vikings (5-6)

15. New England Patriots (5-6)

16. San Francisco 49ers (5-6)

17. Las Vegas Raiders (6-5)

18. Baltimore Ravens (6-4)

19. New York Giants (4-7)

20. Arizona Cardinals (6-5)

21. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-5)

22. Miami Dolphins (7-4)

23. Indianapolis Colts (7-4)

24. Cleveland Browns (8-3)

25. Jacksonville Jaguars (from Los Angeles Rams, 7-4)

26. New York Jets (from Seattle Seahawks, 8-3)

27. Tennessee Titans (8-3)

28. Buffalo Bills (8-3)

29. Green Bay Packers (8-3)

30. Kansas City Chiefs (10-1)

31. New Orleans Saints (9-2)

32. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-0)

49ers draft position goes on back burner following win vs. Rams

The 49ers’ place in the 2021 NFL draft order seems insignificant following a big win over the Los Angeles Rams.

[jwplayer boGiTYJc-ThvAeFxT]

The 49ers were headed the wrong direction going into their Bye week. They’d lost three in a row with none of three games looking particularly competitive. Another lost season was in the cards and the NFL draft was on its way to becoming the foremost concern when analyzing the effects of each 49ers win or loss. But then in Week 12 happened and suddenly the 2021 NFL draft got pushed to the back burner.

San Francisco knocked off the Rams 23-20 in Los Angeles. The Cardinals lost to the Patriots, the Bears fell to the Packers, and the Lions were blown out by the Texans, and suddenly the 49ers playoff hopes got a jolt.

In earning their fifth victory of the year, the 49ers slid all the way down to No. 16 in the 2021 draft order, ahead of only the Raiders and the Ravens.

Here’s the full order after Monday Night Football:

1. Jets, 0-11
2. Jaguars, 1-10
3. Bengals, 2-8-1
4. Cowboys, 3-8
5. Chargers, 3-8
6. Eagles, 3-7-1
7. Panthers, 4-8
8. Washington, 4-7
9. Lions, 4-7
10. Falcons, 4-7
11. Dolphins (via Houston), 4-7
12. Broncos, 4-7
13. Bears, 5-6
14. Vikings, 5-6
15. Patriots, 5-6
16. 49ers, 5-6
17. Raiders, 6-5
18. Ravens,  6-4

Unless San Francisco loses out and finishes 5-11 – which doesn’t seem like a particularly likely scenario with the scuffling Cowboys and Washington Football Team still on the schedule – the 49ers probably won’t find themselves picking near the top 10.

They got as high as 12 following their loss to the Saints, then dropped two spots over the Bye and another two spots with their win over the Rams. Going the wrong direction in the draft order means its time to focus on the playoff chase. Once they’re done chasing a postseason spot, the draft can become a higher priority.

Updated 2021 NFL draft order: Jets, Jaguars creating separation for top pick

The Jets and Jaguars are starting to create some separation for themselves for the No. 1 overall pick.

The Jets gave their fans a scare with their performance on Sunday against the Chargers, but their loss kept them in the running for the No. 1 overall pick.

New York once again maintained a one-game lead over the Jacksonville Jaguars for the top pick in next year’s draft. Right now this race is coming down to them. The Jets dropped to 0-10 on the season with their loss to the Chargers, while Jacksonville moved to 1-9 with a 27-3 loss to the Steelers.

The Cincinnati Bengals are right behind the Jaguars with a record of 2-7-1 after their loss to the Washington Football Team. After Cincinnati though, no one is that close to the Jets and Jaguars.

Dallas, Washington, Los Angeles and Houston all won this week, improving their records to 3-7. The Giants, who were on a bye, are also 3-7, as are the Falcons after their loss to the Saints. So the Jets hold a three-game lead over these teams with six games left to play.

Both the Jets and Jaguars have tough schedules ahead, so there aren’t many opportunities for either team to pick up a win.

For now, let’s take a look at what the first round of the 2021 NFL draft looks like after Week 11.

1.  New York Jets (0-10)

2. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-9)

3. Cincinnati Bengals (2-7-1)

4. Dallas Cowboys (3-7)

5. Washington Football Team (3-7)

6. Los Angeles Chargers (3-7)

7. New York Giants (3-7)

8. Atlanta Falcons (3-7)

9. Miami Dolphins (from Houston, 3-7)

10. Carolina Panthers (4-7)

11. Detroit Lions (4-6)

12. Minnesota Vikings (4-6)

13. New England Patriots (4-6)

14. San Francisco 49ers (4-6)

15. Denver Broncos (4-6)

16. Chicago Bears (5-5)

17. Miami Dolphins (6-4)

18. Baltimore Ravens (6-4)

19. Philadelphia Eagles (3-6-1)

20. Arizona Cardinals (6-4)

21. Las Vegas Raiders (6-4)

22. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-4)

23. Cleveland Browns (7-3)

24. Indianapolis Colts (7-3)

25. New York Jets (from Seattle Seahawks, 7-3)

26. Green Bay Packers (7-3)

27. Tennessee Titans (7-3)

28. Buffalo Bills (7-3)

29. Jacksonville Jaguars (from Los Angeles Rams, 7-3)

30. Kansas City Chiefs (9-1)

31. New Orleans Saints (8-2)

32. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-0)

Best of Both Worlds: Cowboys Week 11 win doesn’t change draft slot

The Dallas Cowboys got a joyous win and didn’t really hurt their draft order either.

The Dallas Cowboys finally broke their losing streak, emerging as the victor over the Minnesota Vikings. The Week 11 win was their first since October 11 against the New York Giants, in the game where hope of a Super Bowl win were vanquished with the season-ending injury to quarterback Dak Prescott.

The offense had fallen flat, and those a league-worst defense started showing signs of only being really bad instead of historically so and Dallas began their freefall to the bottom of the NFL. The lone bright spot? A lost season likely resulted in a very high draft pick. While those on Team Tank might be sulking (how weird is that) the club won and impacted their draft positioning, there’s a silver lining. At least for a week, Dallas had their cake and ate it too. Dallas’ win didn’t shift their draft slot one bit, they remain in the No. 4 slot heading into Week 12.

Now, the win puts the Cowboys in a funny position. At 3-7, they can actually move into first place in the NFC East with a win on Thanksgiving. They face the equally bad Washington Football Team (3-7). The winner of the game will take a half-game lead over the abysmal Philadelphia Eagles (3-6-1). The Giants (3-7) are clearly still in the mix as well.

So there Dallas sits, currently the fourth-worst team in football. Five days away from being in playoff positioning. That’s about as 2020 as one can get.

But as for the silver lining for Team Tank, here’s the deal. Anyone smart enough to read our weekly Rooting Guide knows that Week 11 was a tremendous week for the Cowboys’ draft possibilities.

There were eight games on the schedule that had an impact on the race for the better slots. Of those games, four worked out for the Cowboys and they all worked in a way they remained in the No. 4 slot. Washington, who had been ahead of Dallas based on strength of schedule, also won, but their SOS actually rose above the Cowboys by virtue of all of the team’s on each’s schedule.

Basically, Washington’s group of 13 opponents had a better week than Dallas’ group of opponents.

The team Washington defeated, Cincinnati, moved ahead of the Cowboys, but the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans (Miami’s pick) and Carolina Panthers all won. Losses would’ve moved them ahead of Dallas in the order.

Now, things look like this with the remaining pieces of the Week 11 schedule having quality teams with playoff hopes matched up against each other.

Here’s who is currently where, according to Tankathon.

Pick Team Record SOS
1 New York Jets 0-10 ..583
2 Jacksonville Jaguars 1-9 .551
3 Cincinnati Bengals 2-6-1 .531
4 Dallas Cowboys 3-7 .469
5 Washington Football Team 3-7 .472
6 Los Angeles Chargers 3-7 .500
7 New York Giants 3-7 ..500
8 Houston Texans (MIA) 3-7 .548
9 Atlanta Falcons 3-7 .560
10 Carolina Panthers 4-7 .548
11 New England Patriots 4-6 .503
12 Detroit Lions 4-6 .506
13 Minnesota Vikings 4-6 .513
14 San Francisco 49ers 4-5 .525
15 Denver Broncos 4-5 .573

Should the Cowboys make the playoffs, they likely will be pitiful wild-card round entrants that will be escorted out. Making the playoffs will trash their draft slot, so in the bigger picture winning the game does by extension run the chance their pick could plummet all the way down to 19th. The NFL expanded the playoffs to 14 teams this season, so the worst record eliminated in the wild-card round would pick 19th instead of the usual No. 21.

Team Tank fans will certainly look back at the win over Minnesota with the how-do-you-like-that-four-month-old-win-now vitriol should that happen.

Still, for now, the loss didn’t impact the order.
